I wont lie its been a while since Ive been in a book store but it was very nice being here. The staff were nice and selection of books was vast. Prices seemed good also. Definitely will be shopping here again.
Wonderful independent bookstore in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. I love the staff reviews of books. So glad they are open again for in-person shopping again.
I love this place. A few of the best people I worked with at the downtown Ann Arbor, and first Borders Bookstore, work here now and it looks and feels like it too.❤️❤️❤️
A great selection of books. Very helpful and friendly staff. A nice little hideaway in downtown ann arbor
I often order books online and pickup at the store. Shop local! This is also a fantastic place to shop for kids books!
Great. Friendly. Warm. Fun to browse. Found exactly what I was looking for.
I contacted Literati to inquire about a bulk order. They were quick to respond, and Jeanne was a gem to work with. She was able to get a great price (even better than Amazon) and shipping was fast. Literati will definitely be my first call for any future orders!
I love Literati. During the pandemic, they offered curbside pickup that worked really well. They carefully curate their shelves and can order books for you if they dont carry it. They also have really cool author events. The prices are fair if not the same as buying from Amazon. Support your local indie bookstores!
Fully vaccinated. Tried to pressure me to wear a mask. I calmly but firmly said “No.” The lackey then found it fitting and proper to yell out “That’s silly!”Childish. They lost a customer for life. What a sad place.
The locals favorite bookstore in Ann Arbor. You cant beat it! And theres a public typewriter in the basement. If youre lucky they most post what you type!
An absolutely adorable store with plenty of variety! Different types of genres and a huge selection of popular books. Highly recommend!
The best little bookstore I have been too. They have a wide selection and a wondful cosy atmosphere. I will shop there again.
I love almost all independent bookstores, but I love this one the most. Helpful staff, great selection, easy to order online and pick up at the desk.
A gem of Ann Arbor. Best recommendations, and best atmosphere. Order online even if you dont live locally - shipping is fast!
Easily one of my favorite bookstores- organization makes sense and the staff isnt overbearing. Always slammed, which makes me happy to see. Definitely queer friendly, which is always a concern for me with smaller places. Wish their coffee shop was still open! I understand its difficult with covid restrictions, though. Also very telling that theyre well staffed in the midst of a labor shortage. Makes me feel great to support a small ethical business.
Such a quaint bookstore! They have a very unique collection of books and a great aesthetic! They also have a great cafe upstairs with lots of room for meetups (pre-pandemic of course). Their staff is very helpful and they have always recommended great books to me. Definitely recommend!
Im amazed what a large selection of books are available in this shop! Staff are really friendly as well.
This store is fantastic. Its such a sweet spot.
Great bookstore. So cute. They have the most wonderful decor and artwork.
This is actually for the coffee shop upstairs!WiFi: 26.5 mbs down 17.9 upload;Printer: No;Seats: 35, small tables with one big group table;Outlets: 1.5 outlets per seat, exclusively on perimeter;Lighting: Bright, Natural Sunlight;Noise: high volume music; but good for focus;Vanilla Late: $4.00Order pressure: mild, request order every hourI love the big windows and music. The best part is the first floor is a bookstore with cool events during the week. Perfect for perusing during work breaks.
We absolutely love Literati. We have been so impressed over the six months or so we have been using the service. Our oldest son, age 4, is a book worm so we always knew hed love it, and he certainly does. The real revelation has been our younger son, who is 2 years old. He has never previously been interested in books but the excitement of getting his box and the gorgeous books has brought a huge change, and he now absolutely loves reading. The books are always beautifully chosen, and hard to find. My husband and I love books and we spend a lot of time finding books for our children, and even then Literati always seem to find things we have missed. This is especially the case during the pandemic when we have been avoiding going to book shops in person. And then Literati also include wonderful prints (we frame them and put them on the wall, they are works of art), sticks and extra little gifts like postcards, UV pens (super fun!) and friendship bracelets. I really rate this subscription and I recommend it to all my friends!
Found some great books for my kids.
Love this book store. Has everything you can think of and the staff is so knowledgeable about their books.
I love this store. Its such a cute place. The staff are very kind, and the staff recommendations are awesome. Ive found some of my very favorite books based on the posted recommendations here. Pro tip: Take someone on a date here.
Everything about the store is fantastic, finding parking is just difficult.
A great variety of books and genres, fiction and non fiction. The store is bursting with employee recommendations, every shelf seems to have one. I like that, it makes the store stand out and gives it personality. Theres a cafe upstairs, though we didnt go up. Theres an old typewriter in the basement that customers can use; I love the aesthetic of type print, the click clack of the keys. The girl who rang me up was very sweet and enthusiastic. When I told her the book wasnt for me, I sneaked it away from my friend and bought it for her secretly as a wedding gift, she said that was so cute. Didnt spend very much time here, but Id recommend it!
Great selection and an amazing space. Staff is very helpful as well.
Good bookstore for finding a range of subjects. Not bad for its size.
We met each other six months before Literati opened, but it has been our home away from home ever since their door first opened. Frolic childrens books to science fiction, fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, poetry, travel, cookbooks, new releases and more, Literati has something for everybody. Theyve added a collection of journals and pens as well. The atmosphere is inviting and warm, and shelf talks provide insight to some staff favorites. Book ninjas keep the place going and are always willing to help with suggestions or to answer a question. Step inside, and youll be happy you did!
Very festive and knowledgeable staff.
Super friendly staff
Great selection of books, and if they dont have the book youre looking for, ordering it online through their system is cheaper than Amazon nine times out of ten, with free curbside pickup. Support your local small businesses!
Lots of viraty and great customer service!
Beautiful bookstore with great selections, heartfelt recommendation, cute children area, lots of intriguing quotes, and pleasant cafe! Definitely one of the best independent bookstores that I have been too. Other shops also have book recommendations hand-written by staffs. But this shop has more than average of that! And that was so interesting. I could have spent hours there if I didnt arrive only half an hour before its closing time.Ps. Make sure to go upstairs to see the discounted bookshelf. I found some really good books there too!
Great bookstore, fun place to stop when walking around Ann Arbor!
Heard about this true old fashioned bookstore on a national news cast done by Lester Holt. Had to go buy the book they put together of all the notes and messages people typed on the old fashioned typewriter they put out. Enlighting, heartfelt, impromptu, touching, funny..you name it. Plus it is a great book store with everything book you could want.
One of the great independent bookstores. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful
What a treasure! I love the short narratives given by the store about the books!
Always a great place to go for books
Just the right size
I have zero respect for these people. They took thousands of dollars from the community through a GoFundMe, refuse to open for a year, and laid off all the coffee staff and half of their store staff. Showing their true colors in a pandemic. I get it’s hard but they’re way overhyped.
Awesome selection and staff!
Nothing will ever compare to Borders, but they do it right in this nice little shop.
Ive heard firsthand that the management treats the employees horribly—swearing at them, yelling at them, changing policies without putting them in writing, etc. Such a shame because Ive loved supporting them and thought they were a community-oriented business, but it doesnt sound like it anymore. Take your business to a different indie bookstore.
New Borders of Ann Arbor. Great staff. Good selection.
I always enjoy visiting Literati. I dont get to visit often but Im never disappointed. The service is always super friendly! Im always impressed by the collection and often find treasures. The layout is kinda tight and tall people should be careful in the basement, not thats Ann Arbor buildings. The cafe on the upper level is very friendly and tasty.
A great but tiny place for curious book lovers. Cozy environment and a relaxed coffee shop on top. This place carry also great children books you may not find in big chain bookstores. I appreciate this bookstore host rich, quality events promoting book for all ages. Staff is very attentive and can orientate your interest toward the book you like. Not easy to walk for people with limited mobility or strollers but staff try to accommodate the most they can.
I got there just before the store opened. The window display was eye-catching. It definitely influenced two of my purchases. Once inside, the staff was welcoming and helpful. They found a chair for my dad to sit on while I shopped (he cant see well). Wonderful store, treasures galore to be found. The staff recommends are fun to read, too 😁. So glad I got to go!
Very helpful, knowledgeable staff.
Unique books, helpful comments from the store about books are written up next to many, like an editorial review. And I love that in the childrens section, I found board books I had never seen before like My first book on feminism! I love Ann Arbor!
Amazing customer service! I recently ordered a book online from here. Apparently the publisher had underestimated the demand for the book, and so my shipment would be delayed. One of the employees individually reached out to me about that status of the order and asked if I wanted them to backorder it for me or to cancel the order so I could find it somewhere else. I decided to keep it on backorder, and I really appreciated them reaching out and keeping me informed about its status.
BOTTOM LINE : cozy neighborhood bookseller with a nice cafe upstairsPRO : a comfortable place to browse or to shop. Friendly staff are enthusiastic to help. Cafe offerings are delicious, and the coffee is VERY good. Nicely located downtown.CON : a little small, but the staff can order anything they dont have
Awesome, unique bookstore. Lots of small bookstores have a bunch of mediocre books with a couple great staples. This entire store is full of amazing and interesting books. You can tell they choose their inventory intentionally.
Awesome book store. Love going here. Hopefully will reopen soon
Great customer service and book selection.Order on line and pickup on table out front on E Washington. Before COVID it was a great place to browse and will be again!
Great local book store. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, 2 stories of books, with a locally-run cafe up top. This is also the bookstore that has the open type writer down stairs that people can just type on! It was my first time using a type writer - it was more fun then I had thought!
Im so in love with Literati.Heres what I want in a bookstore... I want to be able to slowly walk around a selection of great books. I want the people who work there to be knowledgeable and friendly, but also let me just stroll around slowly. I want high ceilings and aesthetically pleasing decorations so I feel comfortable. Finally, I want to feel good supporting the place when I buy books.Slowly walk with great books? Check. Perfect staff? Check. Nice environment? Check. Run by good people? Check. So I love it. Walking in here feels good. The books are respected and treated well, the staff has placed hand-written info cards next to the books theyve loved and recommend, and local writers books can be found here. And so buying stuff here feels good. Among other reasons, like supporting the written word on the printed page, they have a rewards club!Such a needed and welcome addition to Ann Arbor!
My favorite go-to bookshop. While Im no longer local, I try to always order my physical books from here and frequently recommend others to do the same. Support local bookshops!
I always love visiting this store. Its very welcoming and well organized. There are some areas that mat be difficult for wheelchairs. The staff is always friendly and helpful.
I went here after dinner to buy a book. It has a nice layout and a good atmosphere. Books were organized so it was easy to find the book I wanted. The staff was nice during checkout. I got a free bookmark with my book, so that is a plus. I didnt go onto the other floors of the shop, but I plan to in the future
Spent the time entire time giggling and nerding out on the many interesting cookbooks Ive never had a chance to get my hands on. I believe its online only during the pandemic but I cant wait for the day they open up again!
Nice bookstore and a place Ill often stop in when passing by. Even for a small bookstore, Im sometimes surprised by what they dont carry, especially in terms of nonfiction. Maybe its just my interests, but in any case, a good bookstore and quite different from the other options downtown.
Im not a huge bookworm but this is a great spot (I prefer the blasphemous option of audiobooks). Excellent selection, very helpful, personable staff, and a very cozy, stylish, and unique environment. Dont miss out on the coffee shop upstairs and the typewriter in the basement. This is my wifes absolute favorite bookstore and that includes having visited various renowned bookstores in New York (Housing works), Nashville (Parnassus), Columbus (book loft), and elsewhere.
This place is super cute. Really has a feel of the small private book store that it is. The only thing I wasnt fond of is that it feels a little too cramped. The kids books were upstairs in a nice area by their coffee shop, but there really wasnt much room to look at the books. I didnt end up going downstairs, but the lady at the counter said they have a typewriter down there that they let customers use and leave them messages on. How cool is that?! Despite the size, I will definitely be back for the friendly service and to explore it a little more.
While I may have a greater affinity for the Dawn Treader in terms of A2 book stores, thats something of an unfair comparison. Similar to my favorite local headshop, being Wild Side, Literati has a somewhat sterile environment. Having said that, their selection is absolutely unmatched, and I often find myself say I cant believe they have this!, drawing weird looks from other customers, of course. Its really quite remarkable how they seem to have gotten ahold of my reading list. In terms of customer service, not once have I felt I was burdening their staff, which is rare among college towns. Vicky is an absolute sweetheart, shes exactly the type of person I hope to interact with when I walk into a bookstore Glad to have found my replacement for Brilliant Books in Traverse City, Bernie Sanders 2020.
Cant wait for Literati to be open again. First place Im going once the COVID nightmare is over! Super friendly staff, wonderful selection.
My favorite bookstore! One of the best places to spend time in Ann Arbor.
This is a lovely local bookstore! I love to spend time here, whether I have a specific purchase in mind or just want to browse. It reminds me of hanging out in bookstores just for fun when I was younger. Also, the staff is always very friendly and helpful. The few times Ive gone in looking for a book they dont have, theyve offered to order it for me.Plus, I like their rewards program - I forget the exact details, but after spending a certain amount (a couple hundred I think) they give you $15 off your next purchase.Highly, highly recommend. Especially if youre a book lover - shop here and support local bookstores!
Really cute, small book store that features some unique books! I really liked the staff picks section. My partner and I both got a book from there, but there were a lot of things that I hadn’t seen in other, larger stores. Will stop in again the next time I’m in Ann Arbor
This is my favorite bookstore of all times! I get a book at least once every two weeks from Literati and the cafe upstairs serves the best hot chocolate in Ann Arbor (I don’t drink coffee lol). They have a really good selection of books, and if the one you want isn’t available, they will special order it for you in a very reasonable amount of time.
Dont go ANYWHERE else for your holistic herbs. This place has three great guys who are more than helpful and know their stuff. All you Kratom lovers, know that this is the place for QUALITY product and a wide array to boot. I love this place.
Busy bookstore with engaged staff who write synopses of their favorite books. Coffee shop upstairs and regular programming as well. Good new selection in constant rotation.
Easily the best bookstore in town. A well curated selection while not skimping on the range of genres. The coffee bar upstairs is excellent, but typically packed with students during the school year. Make a point to gather a few potential purchases, head upstairs to grab a coffee, and dig into the contenders. The staff summaries/ recommendations are an excellent touch and can be found all over the shelves. I dont think Ive ever walked out without an armful of books.
This is the way bookstores used to be. Crammed with interesting titles across sections that take hours to peruse. The only problem I had was that I have forgotten to have the patience to browse a book store. No search engines or online reviews. Just you, shelves, books, and a bench.
Literati Bookstore serves the reading community more as an ark than just a bookstore. I mean Noahs Ark. Preserved inside this three story book store are the energies of Shaman Drum books, the Little Professor Bookstore and Borders. This is like the cradle made of wattles upon which Moses was set to float so that a royal daughter could find it and nurture it. Everything Ann Arbor has learned about running a bookstore and creating a literary community around the store has found safekeeping here. The literary events are sublime, even when the authors are rookies and not Pulitzers. Happy to see the mecca stay vibrant for so many years.
This is my favorite spot in Ann Arbor. I’ve bought countless books and drank many lattes here. It’s a great place to study or just feel a little more connected to the world.
I don’t live in Ann Arbor anymore. I wish I did; I miss Literati every weekend when I’m in need of a book, and more importantly, a suggestion. Literati is an unforgettable location. My favorite part of attending the University of Michigan was living within walking distance away from it. The walls are made of books and attached are earnest and heartfelt recommendations written by Literati employees. You’ll go in with a million books on your bookshelf you have yet to read, and walk out with one new addition to that collection. I miss you, Literati!
Great espresso and cute atmosphere. I highly recommend trying their coffee miel! I got addicted after the first try.
Helpful and friendly staff. Interesting and useful hand written recommendations on the shelves. Excellent atmosphere.
Absolutely loved this bookstore. The main floor and downstairs had plenty of great options to pull from, while the upstairs was a cozy little coffee shop where one could easily spend a few hours.
Great bookstore. Im always drawn to bookstores, but I especially enjoy Literati. They truly have an interesting selection of books. Whenever I walk around downtown, I try to stop in.
The books are a well curated selection, and there is a lot of variety despite it being a smaller place than many bookstores. The coffee shop upstairs is lovely (plus I can bring my dog!) and it is always worth a visit just to browse. I am giving it four stars instead of five because the books are quite pricey (even though that’s not the fault of the store, but the publishing houses) and often, there are only one or two copies of any given book. If you’re looking for something specific, this might not be the place.
Cool bookstore in the basement and main floor, with a cafe and small events space on the second floor. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and small stationary items and quirky books are found throughout. Ive never been to any of their events, but I heard they vary widely as it depends on the speaker or book author. Definitely a nice place to check out if youre in the area.
I really enjoy this bookstore. There are a lot of fun items upstairs and tons of interesting books. There are even more interesting books downstairs.
Literati has so much character. So many great books. Good coffee at their cafe. The kids section is great. We went for a book signing and that was also handled great as well.
Ive never been so excited to read books in a stores basement! This has to be the best assortment of new titles in the area, and Id recommend it to anyone. The kids section is very cute; I respect their push for offering diverse, educational reads from a young age.
Small and charming bookstore with excellent reviews on many books. Go in with no idea what youre looking for and leave with a new story, ready to captivate your soul.
