While a poor college student I took my bike In to have its tires checked. Had been having a few flats.I was assured it was essential to replace my tires. When I showed up a week later to pick up my bike I saw my old tires newly placed on an employees bike. After that I determined I can’t really trust them to make a fair assessment of my bike

While on vacation, stopped by Hearn Cycle shop to pick up some platform pedal adapters for cleated pedals, and they had them in stock. This gets my two stars. Went downhill from there. We asked to use the bike pump to put some air in the tires, and the guy at the shop insisted on filling them for us and used a pressurized air pump. Well, he overfilled them, and the back tube popped. He then told us that sometimes that just happens, and took no responsibility for overfilling the tire and popping the tube. He then sold us a generic no name tube for $8. No owning up to his mistake and no offer to replace what he messed up at no charge, and no offer to install since he busted the tube. Ive worked in retail myself for decades, and would have never charged a customer for my own error, would have owned up to the mistake, and would have installed a new tube at no cost. I also am fully capable of putting air in my own bike tires, and could have used the hand pump and filled the tube to the correct level. Would not recommend this shop.

I build my own bikes and really like fiddling with them, trying to make things better all the time. Hearns is a great shop to find good used parts, and also new parts at a great price. Rarely have I walked in with a need and not been able to find something that will work, and also they are an excellent place to find used bikes, some of them quite unique. Worth a trip to anyone who likes to scrounge around for parts and accessories, or for a bike at a good price!

They built my bike from top to bottom, every piece was picked by me and every piece was the absolute best quality. I live downtown Asheville and I also have my own business downtown. I know the difference of good and bad customer service and I received the best from these guys. Without a doubt in my mind I would suggest any of my friends or strangers if they need help with a new or used bike Hearns will go out of their way for you. Not everyone can afford a brand new bike but they will do their best to putting anyone from beginner to pro on the best quality bike you can afford.

I took my bike out of storage and left it with these folks about 3 weeks ago for a $20 tune-up. I assumed it would be ready in a few days, but after I havent heard from them in two weeks, I called them at the beginning of this week to see what was going on. They told me it should be ready by the end of this week . I went by yesterday and it was still far back in line. I just picked it up and and will do the work myself or find someone else. If they told me from the get-go that it was going to be several weeks, I could have made a decision then. Get another bike mechanic.

I went here looking for a used bike for my 10 year old daughter, and had 2 polite and helpful guys help us find a great match. They knew what size frame to recommend, and helped us narrow down our choices. Once we picked a bike, it was immediately put to the test by the mechanic who checked the brakes and derailer and even gave us an adapter for the tire nozzle. There is a 30 day guarantee, and a free tune up within the first month. I looked up the bike we bought and definitely feel we made a great purchase. Would definitely recommend this place!!

I bought a used road bike here for $450 and had issues with it from the start. the chain was popping off of the largest cog in the front. I returned to the shop to have it fixed and he did so...or I thought. It took over 4 returns to the shop to have it fixed. I told Clark that I did not want this bike anymore and I would like to return it. He said they do not do returns. I came back to the shop less than 2 months with another problem. The chain was making sounds the whole time I was using it. He told me that I put too much lube on the chain and it was wearing out. This caused the cassette to me warn and make this sound. He also said that there was a chip in the hub too. I requested my money back and he said I have bent over backwards to make me happy . I am not happy!...If you want a cheap bike go to Hearns. If you want a bike that works go somewhere else.

I would read into their reviews before going to the shop. Employees (I dont know if you can really call them mechanics) provide the worst customer service and constant misinformation. A quick google search will not only provide more accurate information but better advice. If youre looking for a fun time, look up your questions on google, get your answers and then go try to ask them for some input and advice. What ensues will most likely prove my point.

I took the bike in for service and was told those are not replaceable. I waited a week to hear from them to no avail. I go to the shop on Friday and am told my bike will be ready by Monday or Tuesday. No call... I call Thursday afternoon and was put onhold for 15 minutes. I try to call back and the phone goes to voicemail but cant leave a message because the mailbox is full. I finally go to the shop Friday morning and nothing has been done to my bike! Clark and all of the people he employs are great people and know everything bike related. They have a thirty day return policy on all of their bikes. If you dont like it.. bring it back get the value of the bike on trade. I dont have enough money to go and buy a new 2,000 dollar bike and even if I did... I would have Hearns build me a bike worth that. Because of this place my riding has progressed, and allowing me to trade bikes and pay what cash I could has gotten me on bikes I would have never been allowed to take off a rack elsewhere. Also realize real bike maintenance isnt as easy as one might think. It takes a wealth of knowledge to work on anything from an old Schwinn to a new carbon bike in the same day. I recommend all of my friends to Hearns and will continue to do so.

I took my rim that was shot in and asked if they could find me a used tubeless ready rim, which they stated they did. When I picked up my wheel they had forgotten to put back on my cassette and disc brake. I had to drive all the way back, 45 minutes, to get my parts. Three weeks later, my tire is flat and sealant is pouring out. I took it to a local bike shop here in Brevard and came to find they not only did they not use a tubeless specific rim, they also used the cheapest materials possible to make tubeless and had to have it redone. I could have bought a premier new rim after all said and done rather than the low quality work and materials Hearns uses. DONT TAKE YOUR BIKE HERE FOR ANYTHING!

My advice to you is this: Do not buy a bicycle from this shop UNLESS you are an expert and know how to distinguish quality from garbage. If they sense that you dont know what you are doing, they will sell you garbage and often name prices off the top of their heads. Better to go into a shop where prices are clear from the get-go.I bought two bikes from them and both turned out to be junk, yet I paid $200 for each. I also purchased a tire. I asked for a new one but they didnt have any, so the guy picked up a tire from the floor of a closet and sold it to me for $20. When I put it on the bike, however, it had a hole in it.If youre like me, better to go someplace that is fair to newbies as well as pros--not just the pros.

I recently bought used a road bike from Hearns and am very pleased. The bike was like-new and priced at 66% under list. I dont like haggling so it was nice to be given a fair price right out of the gate. They also include a free tune up with the purchase; adjusting the front derailleur and truing the tires, which made it a better deal than something off Craigslist.I looked through the negative reviews here in relation to my experience to try and understand them. Your overall mechanical knowledge of bicycles might make a difference in your experience. They do have a lot of gnarly bikes (which some people like), so unless you know what to look for in terms of damage and wear you might have a bad time or accidentally buy a lemon/project bike. Before buying any used bicycle, take some time to learn a little about bike mechanics. Theyre such simple machines, the learning curve is not very steep. It will save you lots of angst.

Well my girlfriend and I bought a brand new mountain bike there last summer for her. she is a beginner and has put maybe 30 miles on it. i went to shift it and the chain snagged on the rear cassette and broke off the rear derailer. i took it to a local bike mechanic and he noticed that it is missing one of the rear chain rings. i have no idea how they sold me a new 8 speed bike with seven rings and none of us noticed. long story short they basically said no warranty. my problem. they wanted me to drive in so they could look at at but would not guarantee they would take any responsibility. he said if it really had only 7 rings (i can count to seven) they may do something but the rear derailer was on me. oh well. If you buy a new bike there you should be able to count on a solid 30 miles of riding with 7/8ths of the promised number of gears before incurring a $97 repair to make the bike usable. if you buy there inspect it closely. count the parts: 2 pedals, 2 wheels, right # of gears etc.

I have read way more scorchingly bad reviews than good ones but decided to give Hearns a try as I was in the area . I went in to buy some lighting ( front and rear ) and was prepared to spend $100 + dollars . After waiting for about five minutes for someone to oh I dont know greet the customer, I decided to wonder down to the service area, where three employees were talking . Two of the three guys looked at me and said nothing to me . I stood for another minute, was still ignored and left the junkyard of a bike shop to spend my money elsewhere . I ended up going to Youngbloods where I was treated properly . Incedently, I spent about $20 less at Youngbloods than I had anticipated .

My experiences with this shop has left me luke warm at best. I came here on a tip to find parts for early era MTBs Im building. Their used parts are over priced and if youre not bicycle savvy and dont like to haggle look elsewhere; the bicycle thift shop in Biltmore for instance. But they do have the goods and Ive scored some good finds here.If youre willing to spend the time and break the ice with these cats you can probably find what you need as they have a lot of used parts and bikes but my initial vibe from them was kinda like dealing with Seinfelds Soup Nazi. They seem to be pricing according to mood and they seem to be in the mood to make money. And thats fine. Downtown AVL isnt low rent. Overall I hope they continue to stay in business as they are a good resource even if they seem indifferent to have your business.

BUYER BEWARE!I am a long time road cyclist who took my first endeavor into mountain biking with Hearn. First of all they took complete advantage of me on the sale. They priced a very used Specialized Rockhopper to me for $400. I negotiated them down to $300. New MSRP on the 4 yr old bike was $600 and the real cost should have been about $150. I take responsibility for this since the buyer should always be prudent. So when I purchased the bike, the stem and handlebars were not assembled and they assembled them at the shop. On my first ride down a technical rocky hill, the stem came off true from the front fork by about 30 degrees and I ate dirt and sprained my wrist. 30 days later, it is almost healed. Please reach out to me if you want pictures of the messed up stem and xray. I took the bike to a reputable local shop that fixed the problem and told me the stem was not assembled correctly and the clip that holds it tight was on the wrong side of the stem.I called the Hearns and told them what happened. When I told them what happened they didnt really seem to care. I offered to leave my contact info for the manager and when I offered, they hung up on me.TLDR: Screwed me on price. Sold me defective bike. Hung up on me when I called to complain. Avoid at all costs.

Buying a bike from this guy is like trying to start a business in Mexico. I feel like he has no problem taking advantage of people who know nothing about bikes to sell them overpriced crap. Let me tell you- I honestly was like- yo- I know nothing about cycling. And he was all- oh I got you. right after buying this bike, I take it to get inspected and this bike mechanic (not competition they dont sell bikes) tells me theres severe structural damage, its the wrong size for me, and unsafe to ride. I return literally half an hour later, and he keeps pushing lame, illogical excuses of why he wont take the return, despite the bike being close to splitting at the rear triangle. It took me two trips back to hearns a to get a refund, for which the owner Clark tried to squirm his way out of. When he refunded me, he didnt even refund me for the tax I paid on it.NOT how you run a business. This experience totally threw me off the sport of cycling.

Hearns sold me a decent used bike. Thats about all I can give them credit for. I took it in a couple of weeks ago and asked the service guy to replace the break pads and give the bike a thorough going over to make sure it was safe and everything was in good shape. Those were my exact words. I paid a lot of money to get this done. The service guy told me what a hard time hed had bleeding the brakes, etc, but that it was done. When I picked up the bike and went to bent creek to ride the same day, I had very little front brake at all at first, then none. I took it back to hearns. They replaced the hand grip and charged me an additional $25. I didnt agree with this but I paid it and went on. 2 rides later Im deep in the woods when I loose my rear brake.. Completely. Seriously? So, a little bruised and really ticked off from the wipe out on the way back down the mountain when the brakes failed, I took it back to Hearns again where they explained to me how this is all a big, strange coincidence. I told them I really didnt expect to have to pay for this repair. I had made it clear exactly what I wanted done in the first place and thats what I had paid for.. Or so I thought.. They agreed to no fee this time and said they would replace the other hand grip. Ok, Im a girl. Ive explained to these guys I need to be able to trust them. Im not very knowledgeable about the brake system. I was however, losing trust in them. When I picked up the bike, after a lot of attitude and several condescending comments from the service guy, and the owner trying to justify his crappy service. On my way to Bent Creek to ride, I decided to stop by Carolina Fatz to see if someone would mind to look over my bike. At this point I just didnt feel good about Hearns and I did not feel safe. The owner, Jason, dropped what he was doing to check on things for me. When he took my bike off the rack and rode it in the parking lot, fully engaging the rear brake, he was still able to pedal my bike through the lot. (I feel like Ive been kicked in the teeth!) He took the bike into his shop and pulled the front and rear brakes apart in front of me. I wish I could post a picture here of what he described as screwdriver notches where the pads had been pried out. Huge chunks were gone from the pads and they had been contaminated. He and his staff then checked over everything to find that the lines need to be flushed too... (Are you kidding me?) So, now Im left with having spent too much money on a half ass job done by a service guy with an attitude who got ticked off because I brought my bike in with an issue on something he had done. Im not asking for anything. I just want others to know of my experience. Dont take their word for it at Hearns. Take it apart and have a look or take it to Jason at Carolina Fatz and have him go through it before you buy from Hearns. They claim to thoroughly tune up their used bikes before selling them but after my experience I know their service department is hugely lacking! The difference in service between Hearns and Carolina Fatz is like night and day. I was amazed by the friendly welcome and attention to detail Jason provided. He made sure I saw everything he was doing, while he was doing it, and explained, in detail what I was looking at and what needed to be done. He even managed to do it without bashing Hearns. Judging by his expression, I know that must have been a challenge, but it showed a lot of class. He told me its not safe and explained what has to be done to get it there. I have to have the whole thing done again. Bleeding, pads, everything. Unbelievable. The situation sucks, but lesson learned. Carolina Fatz earned my business today.. and I am busy spreading the word! I was not treated well at Hearns and I was sent away with a mountain bike that was not at all safe. Over all, I would recommend anywhere but Hearns..
