Typical Asian market and the only one for probably 50 miles in any direction. Only ever see young children working checkout, no adults to be seen. Docked two stars for their terrible business hours. 1pm - 5pm during the week… Why have your only weekday business hours during a time that almost no one can shop?

Different kind of market. I wasnt expecting it to be a specialty store. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

Good selection, friendly enough service, family owned. Competitive pricing, surprisingly, with 89¢ ramen. Good for novelty.

Best Asian market in town! I can get 2 quarts of soy sauce for 10 bucks. Way better than spending too much money on a small bottle at another store. Everything is reasonably priced and the selection is great.awesome ramen selection and they have some hard to find produce, like bean sprouts, Thai basil, Thai Chiles, and fresh noodles.fairly decent instant drink selection and they have lots of cool spices. My two favorite things to get are beef paste (instant soup paste) and noodles to make my own ramen. Its 2.50 for the soup mix and 5 for the pack of 8 noodle portions. The soup mix lasts for awhile.

Great bulk spices and sake selection. Many items cannot be found elsewhere in Athens. Typical of Asian markets, it’s a little dingy, and your checkout is likely to be politely silent. The owners are a little low on English skills, but they are very kind and pleased to greet regular customers.

No one talked to us once!! The family didn’t speak english and even the place was dirty. It was expected since most Asian markets are dirty, BUT!!! Some things were even expired and there was a strong smell of burning plastic. But all in all it had very good prices

Staff isnt very friendly and will play the language barrier card to get out of helping you. With that being said, this is a great place to pick up international staples. When I need spices and a larger selection of Asian ingredients I go here. Great selection and variety. Still one of my monthly shopping stops

New to Athens? Heres what to do . . . Shop at New Market, then Farmers Market, Then, go to Aldi, Big Lots, and Kroger. The big surprise is that New Market items are price competitive (and better) with Kroger on my favorite stock up items - coconut milk, Greek yogurt, fresh vegetables and frozen, noodles, rice, spices, tea, etc.. You can cook marvelous dishes.I love to find recipes with a cultural challenge. The lady at New Market is always kind and helpful in finding the right ingredients and helpful with culinary technique - I love New Market!!In addition to a world wide selection of beer and wine.

Its a nice place. The older reviews (around 5 years ago and earlier) are before New Market was bought by my friends grandparents, and changed to New Market. In case youre wondering, his grandparents *do* have a language barrier and dont understand English very well. Theyre nice, polite, friendly, etc., they just, again, dont understand English very well. His other family members do, though, as well as himself. His grandparents (as of the last few years) are assisted by at least one member of my friends family (to help out and for English help when a customer is asking a question or purchasing an item). We usually go there a few times, monthly. Overall, very nice selection of products and good staff.

Like many reviews before me, I have had many a bad experience here, everything from cold stares to downright nasty comments. Shopping here was a last resort to find ingredients not available elsewhere…BUT NOW, as of 6-30-14 I am THRILLED to report that The New Market in under new ownership!Today I went in and spoke with the lovely person behind the counter about a couple of Korean produce items Id like to see them carry. We had a language barrier but she was interesting in helping me out. We both ended up on our iPhones finding common ground in google images. Turns out the Large Pea Shoots she actually grows in her own garden here in town! She excitedly ran to the back and brought me some! She indicated she will try to get them for resale! And then gave me the bag and would not take payment for them. Next we tackled Beech Mushrooms. She took a photo of my iPhone photo of them and will look into it.I must say, I AM THRILLED! The New Market is a gem in our town thats always had so much potential. I wish the owners of China Panda, who bought the business, the best of luck and I hope the community will reach out and support them.

This is such a great little Asian grocery. Its perfect for finding off the wall ingredients that cant be found at Kroger( and you dont have to pay Kroger prices). Plus, you can get bulk spices at great prices. They even have a section for middle eastern food.I love going there when I get a craving for mochi, lychee drinks, or good tea.

This store doesnt even deserve 1 star! I had a friend go in for something and told me they were pretty rude. Today, I went in for an item (had never been in there before) and when I walked in I wasnt even greeted. I had no idea where my item might be. Thought it might be in the refrigerator section, but it wasnt. So, I asked the woman where the GHEE was and even spelled it for her in case I was pronouncing it improperly. She gave me this look like I have no idea what you are talking about and shrugged her shoulders. I pronounced it and spelled it again. There was a man sitting at the front right beside the saleswoman working on a computer and heard me, but offered no assistance. I left to get my friend (who had been there before) to come into the store and find it for me. She went right to it. I held up the jar and showed the saleswoman so she would know in the future. The man working on his computer takes the jar to cash me out and said to me. You act like we dont speak English and was just down right RUDE to me. I told him he could keep the product. He told me to get out! Boy, does he ever have a chip on his shoulder. I told him that he was horrible and not to worry, I would NEVER come back in here EVER again. If he is the owner, he sure needs to reevaluate what he really wants to do. Obviously its not serving the public! If someone else owns this store, you need to get someone else to run it!!
