Amazing little gem. If you like chains and big box stores then stay away. Great sandwiches and the prices on snacks and other things are fair.

Best Home Made sandwiches and sides in Austin. The legitimate Old Neighborhood Store is legit. The store has been open for over 107 years. The owner, Russ, is a great guy.

The owner Ross greeted us out front and gave us the tour and history of the place which has been locally run and operated since 1915. The place has a magical charm. My wife had his homemade pimento cheese sandwich and I got the special. Both were so dang good. We have found such a treasure and look forward to many happy returns to this wonderful place.

As an outsider in Austin, Avenue B always makes me feel welcome and at home, plus they make the best sandwiches! When I tried to buy a few sandwiches to pack for a picnic at the Austin Kite Festival, the owner insisted on coming in on his day off to pack up our picnic so that the sandwiches would stay fresh. (Thanks, Ross!) It really doesnt get better than that!Avenue B has been here since 1909 and I hope it sticks around for a long time yet.

Defiantly an Austin gem. Near 45th street on Avenue B is this quirky grocery store and sandwich shop where you can find items you would expect to find along side items you defiantly would not expect to find but know you need. The owner and if you are lucky, the sandwich maker, Ross, is generally there with a welcoming and laid back demeanor. He has also provided outdoor seating with picnic benches and a bottle opener all in the shade.

Avenue B is a small mom and pop business, that serves consistently great tasting sandwiches. I have enjoyed their food for more than a decade. The place is set in an old neighborhood grocery store, so its easy to drive past without realizing it until you have. There is picnic style seating and tables on the south side of the building, a wonderful place to dine at lunchtime. I strongly suggest calling before going as the owners take time off from time to time.

I was in the mood for a sandwich that was in walking distance to where I was staying, and I happened upon this in my Google search. I am glad I did. The moment I unwrapped my king combo sandwich, I knew I was experiencing something special. The first bite elevated the experience to mythical levels. The service was great too. Ross, the owner, was great to talk with. I got a very kind soul vibe from him.At the time I visited, he was also holding a patio sale out back where you could purchase antiques, toys, and vintage clothes, which I enjoyed checking out.I recommend you check out this place if youre looking for a great sandwich, pleasant conversation, or even some antiques and vintage clothes.

Nestled in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. I went there to get a sandwich for lunch. The prices are a bit more than other places but the ingredients are fresh. I also have no problem supporting local. The owner was there at the time and was fun to chat with him. He takes pride in his store and wants to make the customer happy. The store is small and charming. This is a great place to grab lunch or drinks and sit outside at a picnic table with a group of friends.

As an Austinite since 1981, I rate this as a must place to experience. Its an genuine, old-fashioned country store and casual eatery, nestled in the Hyde Park Neighborhood. Its run by the owner, Mr. Ross Mason, a candid and engaging fellow, who lives in the back of the store. We find it to be a calming place to have a handmade sandwich, a snack, coffee or cold soda outside. Do it soon. Under the radar bits of yesteryear like this one are disappearing rapidly in Austin, due to rapidly rising rents and property taxes. Depending on how busy the store is when you arrive, you may be lucky enough to have Ross give you a long time owners perspective of his business and Austin.

This place is a “must visit before it’s gone for good” piece of old Austin. Around for a hundred years or so, according to old pics on the walls. There is an odd assortment of current and bygone era food supplies to purchase but the deli in the back and the man behind the counter is what tops off your visit. The sandwiches and seasonal soups are homemade and the cook/owner Ross is also “homemade”.Just don’t make the mistake of grabbing a cold drink or chips for your lunch and start eating before paying, because as handmade signs around the store say, “it’s against the law to consume groceries before they are paid for”. Just follow “Ross’s rules” and you’ll have a unique experience and a good meal.

The man working there when I tried to purchase a raspberry yerba mate seemed very upset. instead of ringing me up, he picked up the yerba mate I had grabbed from the cooler, walked it back to the cooler, then walked to the door and gestured for me to leave. I’m fairly certain he did all this without saying a word. No eye contact. It was pretty surreal. I hope he’s ok.

My daughter and I went here as an adventure, a step backward in time and she loved it for a good reason. This place is like a time capsule. And here’s what we bought: a kit-kat bar, a popsickle, a ring pop, 3 tootsie rolls, and a bag of chips. The total, $2.90. Come on, people who complain about the prices here! The people who can afford to live in Hyde park have to make 6 figures at a minimum! Support this place by patronizing it for the simple reason that a 7-year old loved it. She said, “I bet that guy just lived there and then turned it into a store.”Yeah, that’s probably what happened and I’ve seen that guy there for a thousand years and now he’s thinking of closing up shop! What? How about this, let’s bulldoze his store/house and build another condominium there! Are you people crazy? Take your kids there and buy stuff because it’s not just a store, but a museum of a simpler, more innocent time. Tip the guy with 20’s, 50’s, 100’s. He should be making 6 figures at his store but he’s struggling to stay in business. The owner took ice/snow out of his freezer and we threw it at each other and laughed and had a moment of pure joy, my daughter and I who can’t afford to live in Hyde Park anymore. Support this simple landmark for the sake of the owner, the store, the nostalgia, something pure, the joy of a 7-year-old, and the life blood of Austin.Otherwise, we may as well sell all of our souls and prepare for our town to turn into downtown Detroit. Wait, downtown Detroit may have more life in it after its death than Austin. Am I being sensational, maybe, but hopefully it will make you think before giving in to your own soulless existence and keep Austin weird. That’s what the saying means. Live it.

Cute old-fashioned grocery store with a deli in the back. Nice selection of deli sandwiches and the meat is good quality (Im picky about my deli meats!). Among our group, the King Combo was definitely the winning sandwich. There is a variety of sides you can get with your sandwich; everything is ala carte. I had salt & vinegar chips, a deviled egg (you can buy just one) and a pickle spear. I can never pass up on deviled eggs!
