One of the best luthiers/repair tech on the east coast. Bar none. His setup work is the reason why I’ve been a client for well over a decade.
Took a guitar to Phil for some typical issues. Had it back to normal in no time. Cool guy, fantastic player and reasonable prices.
Phil Jacoby is a visually attuned luthier and he’s great at spotting, recognizing and solving string instrument problems. Phil is a talented luthier and I highly recommend.
Had an electrical issue with a Telecaster that Id tried to troubleshoot for a year. Had taken it to Guitar Center and Bills Music before, whose techs failed to identify the issue. Finally took it to Phil and he diagnosed the problem right away, fixed it while I waited. While he was at it he noticed some other issues with the wiring that he corrected, also modified one of the saddles that wasnt positioned right, and did a complete set up - all in 45 minutes. I was amazed. Cant recommend him highly enough.
Phil did a fantastic job re-fretting my Telecaster with SS frets and installing a bone shelf nut. The guitar plays & sounds better than ever. His attention to detail is impressive & he knows a ton about his craft. The work was delivered on time and his $ estimate was right on. Ive been looking for someone like Phil. Hes my go-to guy now for all of my guitars.
I bought a 1970 Gibson SG in 1973 when I was just in high school. The guitar has needed work for a long time but I have been afraid to let anybody work on it because it had such sentimental value to me. Phil was very very highly recommended to me. He gave me a very honest and clear explanation of the work that needed to be done to get this guitar back to its former glory. And he gave me a very precise estimate, as well. Just got the guitar back with new frets, new nut, new bridge, and rewired electronics. I am just on cloud nine! The guitar plays so well and the intonation is perfect!! I am not a professional musician but the respect he showed to me and the care and service he gave to my guitar is admirable. Trustworthiness and quality work. What else is there? Thank you Phil!
I couldnt be happier with my experience with Phil. He is a true professional and a master at his craft. I am amazed at how good my guitar plays now compared to when I dropped it off. He took the time to determine what my needs were and then suggested a plan that was appropriate for my skill level and instrument. I really couldnt have asked for a better experience and I highly recommend him to anyone in need of guitar service regardless of your playing style or skill level.
I needed some basic setup and TLC for a pair of electric guitars. I read Phils reviews online and they could not have been more spot on.He did a great job not only performing the work, but educating me in the process. Hes a master of his craft. It shows in his work, but not his attitude. Hes down to earth and was a pleasure to deal with. Thanks, Phil!
Phil has worked on my vintage guitars and has built a strat type guitar from my parts that turned out to be a dream guitar. He is very talented, knowledgeable, meticulous, and possibly the best around! Highly recommend!
He’s one of the best luthiers I’ve ever encountered. Diligent, straight to the point, dedicated and really friggin talented. Thanks, Phil!
Very impressed with Phils work and style of service. I found him to be very knowledgeable and his attention to detail is second to none. Philtone is easily the best guitar shop in the region.
Phil is the best. If youre in the Baltimore area and bed a great luthier, call Phil.
Phil is a great luthier and does great work. He can sometimes get buried in work, but hes worth the wait.
Phil does excellent work, the best Luthier Ive ever had work on my guitars. He expertly set up two Strats and my Tele. One of my Strats had some fret board warping, he took care of it and did a magnificent re-fret. Excellent communication throughout and he was quicker than I expected. Ill be taking my guitars to Phil and only Phil from now on.
SIMPLY THE BEST!!! BETTER THAN ALL THE REST!!! (see also Tina Turner)Phil Jacoby is the best luthier in town...PERIOD. His knowledge of his craft and the artistry with which he executes the clients vision is second to none. Having owned upwards of 30 basses over my career, I have yet to meet a bass that I havent wanted to modify, save my sainted 1992 Ken Smith 5 string. With the wisdom of a Jedi Master, Phil has talked me down off the ledge on some of my most hair-brained ideas...while crafting others into some KILLER instruments. And to top it all off...Phil and Jay are just GREAT GUYS!!! I HIGHLY recommend Philtone Guitars!!!!
Unparalleled luthier. Phil has been working my instruments for 8 years and I would never consider going elsewhere once finding him. He is the guitar whisperer.
I have used Phil for guitar repair and assembling a custom guitar for me...he is top-notch!
Phil is awesome! I gave him an inexpensive Ibanez and he treated it with the utmost respect and promptly did my work. He did a fretboard wood leveling, stainless steel refret, and a Plek. We were in communication by email the entire time and my quote was far lower than what I anticipated. His work was dead accurate and it plays better than my Ibanez Prestige. Mail your instrument to him and youll be 100% satisfied.
This repair shop is a big rip off he dont even have prices on their website and when you call this guy he bad mouth the rest of repairs center like he is the best if youre going to have a place of business dont try to rip off people by charging super higher than the competitor so I do not recommend this guy to no one he have a bad attitude and bad for business especially for a hard-working musician
First class craftsmanship all the way, everyone in the shop treats every guitar likes its theirs...
Phil is an expert at what he does, and a great guy as well. He comes highly recommended from me.
I have no doubts that phil is a competent luthier, however my experience with him was pretty awful. I brought him a guitar to be fixed, he quoted me at maybe a month or two to fix it, made it seem like no big deal. I contacted him often, he always says things like call back in one week and Ill let you know!. TEN MONTHS later, he hadnt even started on my guitar. Waste of time.
No better luthier in the area - period. He works his butt off to make your instrument right.Phil KNOWS guitars. He knows and understands the physics behind why they work/do what they do...and why they dont.He understands the chemistry behind stains, dyes, glues and finishes. His historical knowledge of instrument production - parts/materials and techniques used is astounding. He also has a degree in music - he gets it not only from the luthier perspective, but the player perspective as well.I own true vintage instruments - 1/2 century old (and some) guitars that represent some of Fender and Gibsons finest work.NO ONE outside of Phil Jacoby touches them for repair or adjustment.Im that finicky.Phils that good...Hes a good person to boot - genuinely.
Best guitar work on East coast.
Phil does excellent work. As far as I am concerned, there is no one else to even consider.
Phil plekd my Ibanez 3120, refretted and put a new nut on my Fender Daquisto and my maple neck Stratocaster. This is over the last five years or so. Incredible work on all of them. Phils work allows me effortless motion on the neck and the intonation is perfect.
Phil Jacoby is a master luthier. His passion and dedication to getting it right is second only to his vast knowledge of all things guitar related. As a player himself he understands the importance of the relationship between guitarist and guitar. What is right for one person may be different for another. Phil seeks to make your instrument into what you want it to be (within reason) not just what he thinks is the best set up. Aside from being extremely competent he is also one hell of a nice, trustworthy guy. Id pay double to have the peacee of mind knowing that one of my guitars is in his capable hands. You wont get that feeling from Guitar Center techs or the self proclaimed basement luthiers who advertise on craigslist.
Terrible communicator. Youre better off going to Steve Blake in Towson.
Very professional and friendly
