Barstow, California. Middle of the desert, is where this architectural beauty sits. No longer open to the public, it seems. The Barstow Harvey house looked vacant, but well maintained. Amazing tall white pillars, arched entry ways and what looks like a ballroom on the inside! I wouldnt make this a destination, but certainly nice to look at while passing through Barstow.

Comfortable touring in the wilderness with a small town feel. We experienced the gentle touch of kind locals wanting to help make this an epic stay. Quiet, slow, and reminiscent of a good life in the hot desert. Wow! it was a heater. Takes some getting used to oven based dry heat. Better than humidity in a sense.

We visited the lovely Desert Museum in Barstow and were encouraged to bring our kids to the Route 66 Museum. Everyone was excited as we entered but we were greeted at the door by 2 very sour faced gentlemen who promptly told us that the museum is not meant for children and we needed to make sure they didnt touch anything. Then they proceeded to have a conversation about why anyone would bring kids to a museum like this. I never saw a sign saying no kids allowed but we did not stay long. The area outside the museum is lovely with a great railroad museum and a historic rail yard.

Lovely museum! You can take good pictures there. They have a big motorcycle and an old car. You can get cool souvenirs from Route 66 too! The owners give you a lot of facts about that route, the history, good moments, sad moments. Please, buy something there, definitely worth it! And... Its cheaper compared to Las Vegas, NV.

To see a Harvey House was a real treat. The bldg was restored wonderfully. The active railyard and Amtrak stop further fueled our imaginations of a train stopping and folks coming in to a meal. The photos on the dining room walls gave a sense of what would have taken place. However no recreation of workers quarters, or a working facility are there. We were there the day route 66 museum was closed. A good portion of upstairs is taken up by NASA display, not an interest of ours. Still a nice stop and place to visit. Lots of RR rolling stock to wander and see.

If you crossed the country in the 60s or maybe even earlier, this place will take you back there. Its not real large (the Route 66 portion) but it is really full of some neat stuff. Theres things from WWII to what you would like to think is current events (70s- 80s). That depends on your age. Its an example of current events for an older history teacher. I wanted to buy some of the signs and tourist merchandise but I refrained because I dont know what to do with it when I get home. There is a train section of museum adjoining which is part of this travel town. I had other destinations and didnt take time to check it out.
