Uwajimaya is a fantastic family-owned Asian and Japanese grocery store, local to the Pacific Northwest. It’s easy to see from the road and has plenty of parking. As their only location in Oregon, their Beaverton shop is a great place to find a wonderful variety of fresh produce, seafood, and meats. The excellent customer service is a testament to the fact that it has been family owned since 1928!

One word -selection. While I was sad to see not that many vegan friendly options in the ready to eat areas, the variety of choices everywhere else made up for it. I even found dairy free mochi ice cream and in many flavor options too! Some of the produce seems a bit higher priced than Id expect -like the five dollar inoki mushrooms for the same amount Ive paid $1-2 for- but Im also new to Portland so this might be fair for the area. All in all, this will definitely be a frequent stop for me!

Uwajimaya has been the stand-out Asian grocery store in the Portland metro area for as long as I can remember. While Fubonn (Chinese), Hong Phat (Vietnamese), H-Mart (Korean) and others stock many of the same products, there are significant, notable differences in quality, as well as vast deficiencies of variety. Whether this is due to a difference of culture, or one of philosophy, is a matter for debate. But as a perennial patron of all of these businesses, Ive begun to notice a few stark contrasts. Many of these sister stores inhabit the shells of former business, and never quite fill them out. They feel...not exactly dirtier...perhaps less pristine is a more accurate (and less harsh) descriptor. Not all the differences are immediately apparent; they only become visible via contrast and experience. Additionally, while Uwajimaya carries products that appeal to the broader Asian cultural and culinary oeuvre, these other stores do not seem to reciprocate when it comes to Japanese foodstuffs. This is the meat of my beef with other Asian stores in Portland.Speaking of meat and beef, one department where Uwajimaya truly establishes its excellence is its meat department. There are cuts of meat here that simply cannot be found at other Asian groceries (believe me, I have looked). One pertinent example: thinly sliced beef, ready for a shabu-shabu, sukiyaki or gyu donburi, come in small (single portion) to family-sized packs, and although expensive, their quality is unparalleled, and (sadly) found only at Uwajimaya. And what chef, gourmand or foodie would dare argue that Wagyu, Kobe or Mishima beef are inferior cuts of meat? Thats right, none.Another stand-out section (one more among many) would be Uwajimayas selection of candies, cookies and other sweets. One need only count the myriad variety of Kit-Kat flavors on offer here, to realize that Uwajimaya revels in the Japanese cultural philosophy of monozukuri, or constanty seeking perfection. This same philosophy of excellence can be observed in many other departments: the hot and cold deli, healthcare and beauty products, hell, even the dishware on sale consists of a significantly higher percentage of porcelain ceramics than cheap, mass produced plastic plates and bowls. These same departments at other Asian stores are pale imitators with inferior products.I wont touch on the Kinokuniya book store, which continues this trend of excellence, because it is a separate business, despite inhabiting an internal corner of the same retail space. My only gripe against them would be that their prices are rather steep, but that comes with the territory of importing highly specialized products to a niche market.I would give Uwajimaya 10 stars if I could, but I will dock them half because they are a 30 minute drive from my house. They will have to settle with a perfect 5 stars instead. Now, if youll excuse me, I have a gyu donburi waiting for me, and I dont want it to get cold.
