Great place and friendly owner. Highly recommend
Smithy knows all makes of 🚗 cars. I bought 2 late model Volvos -- 1990 780 and a 1998 S90.
The rear wheel well lips on my 2003 Toyota Sequoia were badly rusted. Most body shops today would simply sand down the rust to bare metal, apply bondo and new paint/clear coat. The problem with this is the rust will return in 2 years. How do I know? This happened to my Sequoia. So the second time around I sought a body shop that had experience in metal fabrication. The problem is this is a dying art, and there arent many shops specializing in custom metal fabrication/welding today.I found Contemporary Automotive by luck on the Internet and took my Sequoia there. Smitty took a look and said the rust damage was too severe to be repaired. I knew this to be the case, because I sanded down the rust in one wheel well before I took my vehicle to Contemporary Automotive only to conclude the metal required replacing. It took Smitty about two weeks to replace the rust-damaged sections, which was pretty fast. He sent me photos via email showing the progress he was making. All in all, I was very impressed by his metal fabrication, welding and painting skills. The rear wheel wells lips look factory brand new. Given the hidden location, I wasnt expecting that level of quality. Its been two years since I had the metal fab done. It still looks new, unlike the job performed by the first body shop four years ago. So my experience has been nothing but positive and I would have no problems recommending Contemporary Automotive.
Needed a quick tire change. Smitty was able to order the exact set of tires I requested and get them in quickly. He mounted and balanced everything and got me out the door for changing the whole set in just an hour. Superb service indeed!
Smitty, Sabrina, and their team are one of the most conscientious and thorough garages I have ever gone to. A friend recommended them as Volvo experts for my 1993 240, which needed a tune-up, new belts, new rear lights, and some general TLC. Smitty caught all these problems and more. A month later, Ive just returned from having them do a free tightening of the new belts. The 240 purrs now.
Contemporary Automotive worked on my mothers car to get the engine back up and running properly. We could not be happier with the customer service we received from our first phone call with the receptionist, to our consultation with the owner upon dropping off the car. He made suggestions of things we might want to work on in the future without being pushy or insisting it be done right now. I plan to bring my moms car back here for all its future needs, and even a few body touch-ups down the road!
Horrible body shop, and horrible people skills. The first time I took my car here was because they were recommended to me by my vintage car insurance company. The car looked good when it was finally returned 5 week later. Two or three weeks after I picked it up the clear coat started turning milky. When I brought this to the owners attention he said bring it back in the spring and Ill wet sand it and it will be fine.During my wait till spring my vintage Mercedes got keyed on the hood and trunk lid. I called Smitty, the owner, and he said please bring it in March 25th, 2019. This was two weeks after the incident occurred. I brought my car in and it sat for three weeks...he couldnt even take 5 minutes and get the estimate to the insurance company. My insurance company even threatened to close the claim due to the lack of response from this business. At three weeks Smitty finally got an estimate to my insurance company. After being told my car would be ready by the following Monday Smitty told me that was no longer the case because he was going out of town for 10 days and it would be some time after his return before my car would be fixed! I asked why didnt you tell me that when we spoke on Monday? Smitty said cuz its none of your business. Seriously??? It is completely my business as you are in possession of my property. I explained that I would not be moving forward with the repairs and my car would be towed elsewhere by the end of the day.I have made arrangements to have my car towed to my usual body shop at Koons Ford and the cost for the towing will probably fall on me.Do not use Contemporary Automotive unless youre looking for a lot of abuse, and run around from this apparent one man dog and pony show.
Contemporary Automotive charged me $9300 to paint bumpers, trim, and engine cover components of my car, and used Rustoleum(!!!) paint for approximately 75% of it (as indicated on the bill by the UPC code). In writing, Rustoleums product manager specifically states that Rustoleum Stops Rust Satin Black ...it is not considered to be an automotive paint coating... When I confronted Smitty about the paint that was used, he immediately said it was a mistake, and that POR-15 semi-gloss black was used. This substitution provides no remedy, as POR-15 is no UV stable even when covered by a clearcoat. This is supported directly by the technical information on POR-15s website.Additionally, there are numerous defects (dirt/dust) in the paint, the front bumper was not fitted correctly, and all of the paint has a very rough orange peel texture. Unauthorized bodywork was also performed far in excess of what would be considered reasonable (charging 3x more to paint a part than the part costs brand new). Contemporary Automotive also put two dents into my car and denied both. All of the inferior paint will need to be stripped off, bodywork repaired as needed, and parts removed and replaced. The work was professionally appraised at a value of $770, after nearly 6 weeks at the shop, and the final bill exceeding $10,000.This was the worst experience I have ever had with my antique car, or a merchant in general. Please also see Yelp or Angies List for detailed photos of his workmanship before conducting business with Contemporary Automotive.
Not reliable, can not be trusted. Should gone to a dealer.
Very unique shop. A rarity these days.
Cool!
