Five million stars. I bought some plywood that turned out couldnt fit in my car, so they cut it down for me and dealt with all my questions and needs, all with smiles and patience.

Selection of tools or pretty much anything on the shelf with a price tag is great.BUT DONT BUY LUMBER FROM HERE.Let me start by saying that I understand that theres a lumber shortage bc we cant find the people to transport all the lumber from the yards.Its Sept now and the lumber prices have already started to decline. Please dont use that excuse.My 1 star review is for the UNPROFESSIONAL manner in which the business incentivize their COMMISSION based sales staff to PRICE GOUGE would be do-it-yourself customers. You will get different prices from each different sales person depending on how friendly/unfriendly you are to them.Occurrence 1- I called to get a quote for lumber and was quoted $5500 for my lumber order. I mentioned that Home Depot quoted me $2650 so he dropped the price to $3200 from $5500. I went ahead and made the purchase with Ashby because they were able to deliver my large lumber order. Speed is money so I had to have the lumber on site asap. I DO NOT have an account with Ashby lumber so I probably would have gotten a lower price if i had an account.Imagine that if I hadnt not mentioned I had already price shopped that I would have paid at least $2200 more for my lumber. I cant fathom why there would be a $2200 difference in pricing unless they were trying to get away with charging the HIGHEST PRICE POSSIBLE.Occurrence 2 - I needed more wood delivered so I called Ashby because there was more dry rot then anticipated. Once again Home Depot wasnt an option because they couldn’t deliver in time.I call and get a different sales person this time.At first they were booked up and didnt have anymore deliveries open for the date I needed. She proceeded to ask me about my order and was able to magically make space for my deliver once they found out it was a nice juicy $3,000 in lumber. This second order was almost as EXPENSIVE as my first order but only 1/3 the amount of wood from the first order. Of course I left it alone because they would probably magically not be able to make the delivery if I had corrected them about the pricing.MORAL OF THE STORY IS SPEND YOUR MONEY WITH ECONOMY LUMBER OR OSBORNE LUMBER if you want to support a local small business. Or just buy from Home Depot/Lowe to save money on your project. BE CAREFUL when getting a lumber order delivered because they will send you the UGLIEST PIECES OF LUMBER in the yard. I suspect they only do this to their non-contractors customers because they know contractors would not accept low quality splintered and chipped boards.Ashby Lumber - fix your PRICE GOUGING PRACTICES. If you actually care about your local customers then you would be more transparent about your pricing.Of course the GM will post a reply about how this isnt representative of their business but please try calling and getting a quote yourself. You will see how their initial quote is sky high and if you mention you got a better price from Home Depot or any other lumber yard that the price will drastically decrease. Indicative of poor management and bad compensation practices by the ownership. PAY YOUR STAFF ENOUGH SO THEY DONT HAVE TO PRICE GOUGE YOUR CUSTOMERS.

Great place they have every tool possible better then home depot. great prices friendly staff. if In the area stop in and take a look I bet you will find something you will need.

They are so friendly and have everything there.Esp the guys that load the wood onto your vehicle..they really help you get good pieces!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. I needed five 4-foot boards so had ordered a single 20-foot board to cut up. They were out of the 20-foot boards but offered to cut up some shorter boards to provide me with the five boards that I needed at no additional cost to me.

Bad service, by phone they have the worst actitude, I tried to buy but imposible

First time coming here and while they had a good selection of tools & hardware, probably won’t be coming back due to their terrible attitude & customer service. Husband was debating whether to get a saw, so he asked about return policy (as is reasonable any time you make a big purchase). Who I assume is one of the owners told him in no uncertain terms that their return policy is “nonexistent” with a combative attitude right off the bat. And after my husband explained that he asked about the policy to have peace of mind in case he changed his mind, because we’re so used to shopping at Home Depot. The answer from the owner was extremely rude and insinuated that my husband may have wanted to take advantage of their business. We are very put off by this attitude. We understand the lack of a return policy, but the attitude to a simple question felt like we personally offended them. We decided to not get the saw based on this extremely unpleasant interaction and will not be back.

VARY NICE THE LAST TIME I WAS THERE WAS BACK IN 1980 NOW THEY HAVE REALLY GOT NICE HAVE EVERYTHING U NEED TO BUILD A HOUSE THATS GREAT

Ashby has much better lumber selection than the big box stores, friendly and helpful staff, and the hardware weve needed for most projects. We try to vote with our dollars and support local businesses whenever possible and are thankful to have found Ashby. Highly recommend!

An absolutely exceptional hardware store as it has been for decades. Tool selection and customer service that creams the big box stores on every level! A Berkeley treasure that everybody should visit at least once a quarter!

I liked it.. good service and good products while in store

Bad experience-I bought a faucet from the sales lady, 265$. The sales lady gave me an opened box but when I took it home, some parts of the faucet couldn’t work. I tried to return it and that wouldn’t let me either change or return. Be careful of this store.

So we went to that place close by that was less expensive but the lines were long and no one to help cut so we bailed & went to Ashby Lumber, we walked in and were greeted. We got what we needed and we ordered our lumber to size and went outside, Got in car, drove around the corner and turned in our receipt sat in our car listening to music and then a forklift pulled up with our order. Winner!

Ive been to Ashby lumber a handful of times to buy some pine for furniture projects. This is the second time Ive been burned by them. The first time was all their cross cuts were not straight, which messed up 2 projects and forced me to re-cut and re-design my 3rd project. This time Mathew overcharged me for my wood. I didnt bother to check my bill until after I got home, but I noticed that he ordered the pine cut in a illogical manner. For example, if I order 6 boards at 3 foot long, why would they charge me for six 4 foot boards, all cut at 3 foot instead of a 12 foot board cut three times + a 6 footer cut once? The latter method comes out cheaper because Im not left with a bunch of short cuts and there are fewer cuts overall. All the boards there are 12+ feet long anyways. Also, I would like to choose my boards, which I wasnt given a chance to do so. Recalculating my bill it should have been about 20.00 cheaper. Seriously is it amateur hour at this place? I expect this from Home Depot, but I would expect a lumber yard to have their act together. Or is this actual store policy if they think they can get away with it? Do I actually need to be super specific when ordering cut wood? How assertive do I actually need to be. Ill be definitely having a word with the manager next time I am in there. This place is close to my house, which is great, but Im willing to go out of my way to actually get proper service.

Just bought a new house and have been going the cluster route of Home Depot doing runs back and forth until I found Ashby Lumber and more specifically Robert! This fella is about the most helpful person Ive ever met and also the most patient since I have never done any type of house renovation before. He knows everything I sling at him and if you guys go here definitely ask for him!

Had a mostly great experience at Ashby last Sunday until heading outside to pick up my lumber order. One individual staff member in the yard area was inexplicably and aggressively rude. I won’t ever go back.

Our kitchen faucet finally died on a Saturday afternoon. We were eager to replace it as soon as possible and went to Ashby lumber to select a replacement. We decided to go to Ashby lumber because we are over 65 and we’re concerned about the crowds at Home Depot. When we purchased the faucet we were assured by the sales person that we could return that item as long as we did so in the original packaging. The next evening a plumber came to install the new faucet and upon opening the box reported that Ashby lumber had sold us a used one. I had to take time off from work to return the used faucet to Ashby lumber on Monday. Ashby Lumber refused to give me a refund for the used faucet. Exchange only even though they made a mistake. Ashby lumber at no time apologized for the inconvenience that I experienced in having to return to their store because they sold me a used item and for keeping me waiting close to two hours as they investigated how that could’ve happened.

I was a little confused where to go as it was my first time buying wood here. But the prices were great, lumber is clean and straight! Easy enough. Ill be back for sure!

Price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic is illegal. $12.99 for a small hand sanitizer... $7.00 for two rolls of paper towels. $39.99 for a Chinese mask that claims NIOSH approved but has no N95 or P100 rating (its a fake)Lumber and building material prices 30-50% higher than the big box hardware stores...Surly and difficult staff. How the heck does this place stay open?

As a long time customer, I was disgusted with the horrible customer service I received by Frankie he wouldnt let me choose the redwood I wanted and then threw my receipt on the ground. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Ashby lumber as long as hes still there.

The staff at Ashby Lumber are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They are good with contractors and homeowners. And they have tons of products! So if you aren’t sure what you need, explain your project and they will take care of you.

Horrible service! Went in there today with some samples of wood and the talked to Mario behind the counter. He takes one look at the samples and say no we don’t have these. Right after the answer he leaned to the left and spit it his tobacco.So I ask him if we can special order the item and he replied no! He leaned to the left and spit again.I felt disgusted so I just looked to my left and on the wall was exactly what I was looking for.So I tell him hey this is what I want. He replied that’s pinewood.I informed him that it was fine and made the purchase.It seemed like he really didn’t want to sell anything to me but I am wondering if he was a sales person isn’t that his job?I will never go to this place again.

Decent spot for lumber. Not the best prices but a good selection. Picked up some ironwood for a project I was working on and I have no complaints.

They have quite a lot of quality items in the store, seem to be able to order many things. The set up appears to be centered for contractors but they sell to anyone. Not much help staff on the floor. They have more wood of course, however lots of plumbing, hardware and tools too.

A good local lumber company, that still has a Mom and Pop feel. Also if you need small random lengths, the have a free scrap bin, you can normally find Doug fir, redwood, and pressure treated in it.

Good source of lumber, building supplies, and tools. Helpful to amateurs. Great plumbing fixture section. And open all weekend.

We purchased all of our hardware for our bathroom remodel here, and the staff was extremely helpful. We had several items that ended up needing to be swapped out, and the staff bent over backwards to make sure we got what we needed in the end.

This place completely exceeded my expectations. Customer service for a slightly clueless do it yourself-er....excellent. from the minute I walked in, they made me feel like the only customer in the store. Sent me over to the warehouse to pick up a piece of moulding that needed to be cut to my specs, where once again, everyone was incredibly attentive and so very helpful. Shout out to Javier, who went above and beyond, hes a genius with a saw blade. Please would his manager possibly give him a raise? Seriously, I will probably never return to Home Depot. Ashby lumber you are fantastic. I spent less than $6.00 and was treated like royalty.

I just discovered this place. Always thought it was a lumber store, but they carry many different tools and hardware for home repair, construction and projects. They are also the only place I found that carries metric tape measure. The guys who work there were very helpful and excellent customer service.

Great store - very helpful with a wide range of tools and products

I bought some redwood fencing from Ashby Lumber. The fence boards were supposedly 5 ft in length but they had a margin of error up to .75 inches longer or shorter than the stated length. While that was annoying, I could live with it. Two of the boards however were a full 2-2.5 inches short of 5 ft. I pre-stained all the boards before installing them and didnt notice the two short boards. Upon calling the store to complain, I learned that since I stained them there is nothing they can do. I had no idea that I should expect these boards to not be the listed length. Im only out $20, but its enough to think twice about shopping at Ashby Lumber again.
