Great story with great variety of normal yarns (not a lot of funky boucles or anything when I went in January 2021). The woman was super helpful - showing me some free knitting patterns, helping me find yarns for project ideas. Prices are competitive, nothing is crazy expensive (most yarns were $13-$25). Fun store and seemed like the employees would let you hang out for hours! Check this one out!
My girlfriend went here to buy yarn and needles; she is relatively new at stitching and the staff was very helpful. One of the employees even let her practice knitting with some of the needles and yarns to get a feel for different needles. This appears to be a small business, so I support anyone coming here for their knitting needs.
Great employees and amazing during covid. Covid friendly which makes it a great place to pick up yarn and such for a pandemic project!!
Glad to see theyre still open. I hot a couple of skeins and caught up non some LYS news. Sorry to hear about Pearl from NYC Knitty City
The staff is friendly and theres a good assortment of workhorse and boutique yarns. Im always happy to shop here. Be aware that theres a steep staircase up to the shop.
Second Story Knits has given me a warm welcome to the craft and art of knitting. As a beginner in knitting, I keep popping in to the store for my supplies and for advice and support. Joanna is a born teacher, and generously shares her knowledge to make this newbie more comfortable and confident.
I have shopped here for so long and it is a wonderful store. The staff is amazing and beyond helpful. They have done so much for me and I notice that everyone receives such care. Patient, too! I love it and I love the help I have been so generously given,
Joanna was very nice and helpful! Cute store with a nice selection of yarns. It was a bit on the pricey side, $20-25 per roll, however, its been awhile since Ive shopped for a project so that might just be normal. Excited to knit again and will definitely be returning to this spot! Happy to support a local place instead of the chain craft stores.
Joanna is a knit maven, an expert with a huge heart. She helps beginners and experts alike, in a kind and supportive manner. Her shop is filled with beautiful insulating, great products and friendly knitters who love to chat and coach. Its a great place for anyone who wants to knit!
Only go if Ann or the gentleman is working. They are the friendliest and most welcoming. Even if you’re spending a lot of money, thevwoman don’t treat you kindly or enthusiastically. Nothing worse then miserable knitting staff 😳🤡
I had an almost new alpaca sweater that snagged. I popped into Second Story Knits late one Saturday afternoon and a lovely guy named Mark spent about 5 minutes demonstrating his mastery and fixed it on the spot. I very much appreciate the local community feel of SSK and the warm reception I received
JoAnna is wonderful! I had never knitted before and she walked me through the process. Shes patient and a great teacher. The Wednesday night knitting group is fabulous. Ill definitely be back when Im in town again!
My favorite knit shop! They have an awesome knitting community here.
The name of this place describes its location. As I climbed the stairs to the second floor, walls on both sides are covered with fiber art, primarily knitted shawls. When I arrived on the second floor, I can see a multitude of colors. I was surprised to find so many yarns by people/companies new to me. I limited my purchase to one skein in addition to the needles I originally wanted. The staff was extremely helpful. I had called several stores looking for the needles before calling Second Story Knits. According to Google Maps, I would arrive ten minutes after they closed. Maybe it was the desperation in my voice, but the woman agreed to wait for me to arrive. The 40-inch size 1 circular needle was waiting on the counter when I arrived. The only reason I cannot give this shop five stars is the lack of accessibility.
Visited this shop last month- nice selection of yarns and lots of samples. Easy to get to from downtown DC via the Metro. Staff is stellar. I mistakenly purchased a skein in the wrong weight and didnt realize my error until I was back home in New England and winding yarn. I called the shop and they went above and beyond to help me out. I am so appreciative and quite blown away by the customer service. I will be visiting again in the future.
I love this place! Came in as an elderly beginner, and the incredible staff nurtured me along to become a proud knitter. Wonderful selection, but Joanna and the staff make all the difference.
Good selection and friendly staff. Nice range of high-end yarn with a few economical options just in case. Good layout--easy to see the yarn and explore all the varieties.
Sooooooooooo lovely! Great selections and friendly staff!
I love the yarns and the staff is warm and helpful!
I really like how much discounted and clearance yarn they have. Knitting can be expensive! The staff is friendly and chatty.
Loved the ideas hanging everywhere and the inclusive knitters. They were wonderful
Delightful! Lovely varieties of colorful, exquisite yarns and everything you need to create your own handcrafted masterpiece - whether its a simple scarf, a pair of socks, or a fantastically lacey shawl.
Awesome supportive yarn community gathering place :)
Great selection of yarn with a friendly staff who give wonderful recommendations and teach classes on certain days of the week.
Lovely shop, very nice people and a good selection of yarns.
Good selection. Dedicated 2-hour parking lot.
Best place in Bethesda to discuss knitting and a one stop shop for all your knitting needs.
Wonderful - warm, friendly, not pushy help offered with their lovely yarn selection!
Friendly, knowledgeable staff, not a bad selection of yarn.
Customer Service must be sold somewhere else, and their yarn selection is hardly impressive enough to make up for that. If you have to visit, just dont rely on what youre told being true.On my first trip of the week I purchased 9 hanks of yarn for two major (and one smaller) projects -- one using alternating colors and one with stripes. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and bought equal amounts of two colors (2+2) for both projects, when the striped project actually required 3+1. No big deal, right? Its the same brand and weight, I just need a different color, and the receipt says they take returns for 14 days. Should be easy to fix. Spoiler alert: she wouldnt accept a return.I went back the next day -- only 22 hours after my original purchase -- with my receipt, the yarn, and the tags all together there in the bag. They refused to accept my return! I was baffled. I was standing there with the receipt which clearly said I had 14-days! Her excuse was that because the yarn was wound, they wouldnt accept it as a return. Wait, what? They wind their yarn in store! Its done right there, with the machine on the counter/table so everyone can watch. There is no warning that the yarn being wound makes it unreturnable, and the receipt says Returns within 14 days and nothing more. Its an absurd excuse. To make it unreturnable before it even leaves the store is insanity, and to refuse to help an otherwise solid customer on something so small is terrible business.I had to pay full price for another hank of the exact same yarn in the color I needed, because I wasnt sure if I could match the color, brand, and weight elsewhere when there are so many on the market. Maybe its silly to be upset about $20, but to me its more the fact that this is deceptive and breeds ill-will. Only 22-hours had passed, the yarn was brand new with packaging receipt and bag, receipts say they accept returns, etc. etc. Its just baffling. This was only the biggest issue I encountered. However... Employees seem prone to long personal conversations while customers wander. Their wide selection means they only stock a couple hanks of each yarn, so youll have to make multiple trips if you need more than 2-3 hanks of any specific yarn. They only sell great round needles that are actually awful -- interchangeables that tend to unscrew while knitting, leaving a gap with exposed screw threads that snag your yarn and prevent easily moving it in the round (For Sale: one 16 round size 6, hardly used, packaging open and unreturnable). One person I met was knowledgeable and nice, one was indifferent and never spoke to me, and the other seemed to view customers as an interruption, and immediately had no patience for my return. Finally, Second Story Knits is inside a multi-unit building, up a steep and narrow flight of stairs with no apparent access for the handicapped. Any business in such a location failed to think about their customers from day one.At the end of the day, my review seems to be in line with all the reviews that arent five stars in saying that their customer service is lacking, even at its best. One-star and five-star reviews, with nothing in between; make of that what you will.
Yes, they are up a flight of stairs. the place feels neglected. the woman manning the store didnt even bother to get up. the yarns are pedestrian. not worth a visit IMHO
Cute and friendly. Range of yarns and habadashery
This is an amazing shop. Come check it out.
Great selection, lovely staff.
Yarn selection is ok, and most of the staff is not friendly.
Favorite knitting store!
This is my go to LYS!
Always helpful and friendly
