I was sent to Dr. Riggs from urgent care after I got a foreign body stuck in my eye. I was very happy they sent me to him. He is very meticulous, knowledgeable, and actually cares about his patients. Unlike some doctors, Dr. Riggs stays up to date on recent studies so he is better able to care for his patients. Highly recommend!

Exam Room was clean and organized with excellent equipment. They really spent the time to check my eyes thoroughly for cataracts, degenerate eye disease and really dialed in my prescription.... way better than my previous visit to Eyeglass world. John Riggs was really professional and friendly along with no pressure to purchase glasses. They are truly a service first business, Im so glad I found them!

I just want to thank Dr. Riggs and his staff for taking such good care of my mom. Thank you for doing such a thorough examination followed by a quick diagnosis. They made her very comfortable despite her initial nerves going in, and she felt great about the whole experience.

I’ve been coming here for 10 years for eye exams and glasses! Dr.Riggs is the best and staff is always friendly. Dr. Riggs performs very thorough exams; he was able to get me to 20/20 knowing I have really high astigmatism.

Very disappointed in a service that was provided to me. I went to this doctor 4 times to get my correct eye lences. Doctor also damaged one of my original lences that I came with to the office, my first time visit (to check the material). I returned their products back to them in exchange for half of what I paid for the lenses. At the end I got left with no proper lenses, lost money and time. Not recommending.

When the covid pandemic started and businesses closed down, I had an eye emergency and needed urgent medical attention. Dr. Riggs was able to give me a same-day appointment and help me quickly and effectively. He addressed all of my questions, and his staff even followed up to see if I needed any further care some days later. Great optometrist!

This doctor should not be practicing, he really should be put off service for his really bad bad bad attitude I really think he is abnormal, don’t wast your time to go there everrrrrr

Dr. Riggs is very rude. I called for eye glasses, he interrupted the girl at the front desk and got on the phone telling me that my prescription was expired. Instead of asking me to come in for an eye exam he simply hung up. The girls are very nice as I have been here before. But the Dr. has always been short and rude.

My wife and myself have been going to see Dr Riggs of the Family Eyecare Center since we moved into the area almost 22 years ago. I have found everyone in his office to be friendly and professional. Dr Riggs is a caring, thorough, and a highly knowledgeable optometrist. In fact, I do believe that he is more skilled and more highly trained then many of his peers. The exam is always thorough and complete. he takes the time to explain each of the test and what the results may indicate. He gives you options for your treatments and recommendations for your ongoing eye health.

I came back to Family Eyecare after trying another facility closer to me who didn’t do a good job with the lens. I wear trifocals and the placement on the lens is done perfectly here.... really pretty frames to choose from too😉

Had my eyes checked w Dr Riggs and it was a great experience. He was very thorough, explaining everything as the exam went along as well as answering all of my questions. Dr Riggs was extremely professional, courteous and kind. Can’t recommend him and his staff enough, if you need an optometrist, look no further.

I would have given a negative star if there was an optionI booked an appointment for my wife for an eye examI was asked to come 15 mins early to do the paper work. We went there 15 mins early to find out that they moved their office to a different location (3257 Camino De Los Coches) which they did not even care to mention when I made an appointment. We went to the new place which was 2 miles away from La costa by 4:05 to find out that the office was locked and there was no one there. Total Waste of time and energy. I strongly recommend to avoid this optometrist.

I received very good care from Dr. Riggs. He was extremely thorough and meticulous at curing my eye infection. I would highly recommend his care in an emergency situation.

I really enjoy the services I received at Family Eyecare Center. The doctor is very thorough and pays attention to my specific needs. He’s also very honest so it makes it easy to know how I can better take care of my eyes.I love the location of the office and how clean it is. I have been a patient of Dr. Riggs since 1997, which was when I got contacts for the first time! As a 13 year old, contacts were a huge change as Ive worn glasses my entire life, but I was finally ready. I am now 29 and will keep seeing Dr. Riggs the rest of my life because he is very thorough and meticulous in his instruction and tests. Mercedes and staff have always been friendly and personable, and it makes me feel special to know they remember me each time. I also love the convenient hours as I work 8-5 Monday through Friday and usually find it challenging to schedule doctor appointments outside of normal business hours. But having occasional Saturdays in addition to later hours one night of the week makes a difference for me so I do not have to miss work. Dr. Riggs and staff are a true gem, I recommend Family Eyecare Center to anybody and everybody!

Dr. Riggs is an excellent clinician with lots of specialized equipment to assess eye health. He takes his time with his patients and provides a super comprehensive eye exam. He has taken extra training to be able to prescribe medications and he is a skilled diagnostician. Dr. Riggs is at least two steps above the normal optometric exam and I drive from Los Angeles to San Diego based on the excellent care he provides.

After finding out that my Optometrist no longer accepted my VSP after 11 years (ahhh!) and I desperately needed to order contacts, I contacted the Family Eyecare Center in Carlsbad. Its down the street from us and had great reviews. The entire experience was wonderful. From the front desk to the Dr. to the process in getting my contacts. All in a one week period! I definitely plan on continuing my appointments here. I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in. Trusting my terrible eyes with a new Dr. seemed scary but he was wonderful and great at conversation. Glad I found this place so close to home and so quickly through the VSP website.

Dr. Riggs is an excellent eye doctor and provides patients with a very thorough and detailed eye exam. Staff is very friendly and welcomes you with a nice smile. Clean office and nice frame selection.

Very Satisfied. In my line of work as an automotive inspector, my eye site is one of my main tools. I am exposed to allot of debris falling on my face. I wear glasses but sometimes I get something in my eye. I can usually get it washed out but not this time. Once Ive gone thru the day and night with this debris in my eye, now Ive scratched the eye lid and in quite discomfort. I needed a specialist. I found Family Eye Care Center, and as Dr. Riggs saw my eye, he took me in immediately and began to educate me on the complexity of the eye. With state of the art tools, I was able to see all the damage I had done to my eyes thru many years as an auto technician, and the culprit that was causing me so much pain. He explained thoroughly what he was going to do and next thing I know, I felt immediate relief, knowing that there would be some healing from the damage I caused by waiting. I left with some medications and instructions and even received a follow up to see how I was doing. His office is professional. His staff was nice. I highly recommend this establishment.

Very thorough eye exam!! Been going there for years!

A few years ago, Dr. Riggs was extremely impatient with our four children who had previously been foster children. When I went to pick up their glasses weeks later, he commented that I was the one with the active children. I have never experienced a doctor less gracious to children. I vowed to never return, but this week I returned to look at glasses for one of our children because no other eyewear venue would accept Medi-Cal. They verified that the glasses would be fully covered through Medi-Cal, but still insisted I sign that I will pay any charges that may arise. Had I not had a previous unpleasant experience, I would have been happy to sign. I chose to decline their services and leave.

Do not go here for anything. Dr. Riggs is rude to his staff and patients. My experience was so bad I just left. He was yelling at the women at the desk I have never seen a doctor so inappropriate. He than started ranting at my friend about them it was disgusting and disrespectful. We were so uncomfortable we left without setting her appointment. We saw bad reviews but thought we would try. Insurance coverage or not I will never go here again!!

Last year I had epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, pretty unusual, I understand, and probably the same red eye that Bob Costas had during his Olympic broadcasting, but Dr. Riggs fixed it in just 2 days with a special eye rinse. It came on in just 1 day and became painful quickly; I could hardly see. I highly recommend him and his wonderful staff for all eye care as well! He has been taking care of the entire familys eyes for many years now. Give them a try - you wont be sorry, especially if you have any concern for hereditary eye issues.
