I have been collecting watches for over twenty years. Whether at brand boutiques or individual watch dealers, I have consistently been dismayed at how sales associates seemed bothered when you need assistance. I was recently visiting Charleston, SC with my wife, her three grown children with their college-aged kids, and my business partner’s cousin’s brother. After grabbing a late lunch at Hall’s Chophouse where everyone decided to order the special, a $22/oz Wagyu filet, that ended up costing me well over $1,500 for lunch, we went gallivanting down King’s Street.I passed by MP Demetre Jewelers three times before entering the building. I have a bad history with jewelry stores, actually just stores in general, but on this particular day, I felt weak. Pretending to have not recently started a 12-step program to help with impulsive spending, I slowly pulled the door open and entered the pearly gates.Needless to say, this store was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Sleek, shiny marble throughout. Well lit, yet warming and peaceful like the summer evenings in Roanoke where the light descends from the heaven’s above to remove any and all darkness. Fine jewelry is evenly displayed throughout like the riches in King Tut’s tomb. The only thing I know for sure is that God must have spent a little more time on this jewelry store because the description of “absolute perfection” still seems to understate the magnificence of this establishment.It didn’t take me long to see what I wanted, a gold watch similar to the one worn by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in his hit movie “Get Rich or Die Tryin.” With my checking and savings account balances sitting slightly lower than the minimum amount required to avoid monthly fees, I called the HR Benefits Coordinator where I work and initiated another 401k withdrawal, this time depleting my entire retirement. I then paid a 20% fee to have the money wired to my checking account immediately. After depleting my retirement account, asking the bank to increase my daily debit limit by $35,000, and paying over $8,000 in fees for same-day transfers, I swiped my debit card and made the purchase which to this day, I feel like this is one of my all-time best buying decisions.Not a day goes by where I don’t get complimented on my gold watch. I have had countless people approach me and ask, “Is that the same watch Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson wears?” I always smile, nod, and say, “It’s a goldie, not a stopwatch, it don’t ever stop.” Thank you Mr. MP Demetre for such a fine purchasing experience and I will be back to see you when I have enough money in my 401k to allow for another withdrawal!

Ordered a new watch which is on short supply and normally has 4-6 months delivery time. The owner Peter managed it to get the special piece within 3 weeks (!). Awesome experience, very helpful and professional. Even if you do not buy, very good atmosphere and non-pressing. 100% recommendation.

Demetre Jewelers was recommended to me by a friend in Texas. I currently live in the DC area and I was hesitant at first on working with them on my very first purchase of a Rolex for both me and my wife for Christmas as they are in Charleston, South Carolina. We do vacation 3-4 times a year in Charleston, so I was familiar with their store, but never walked in. I made the call and spoke with Peter at length and was amazed at his knowledge in the watch industry. I say at length, because my wife already knew exactly what she wanted, but I was still uncertain as to which model I should choose. Peter spent the next 45 minutes walking through the models and giving me the detail of each to assist in my decision. I went back and forth on different models over a three week period and had continued conversations with Peter and his staff. I must say they went above and beyond what any merchant has ever done for me, let alone a jewelry store. They were extremely patient, always courteous and polite, and were always willing to speak with me. I’m embarrassed to say this, but I would imagine I spent 7-8 hours on the phone with them over a 3 week period. Demetre Jewelers and Peter and his staff can only be described as the superlative and preeminent jewelry store. I am already looking at my next Rolex to purchase based on my first experience.12/20/12 I returned to the store to purchase another Rolex, this time the GMT II. Peter once again was a tremendous help and he makes the purchase painless. He is a true gentleman and I appreciate his honesty. I had an excellent purchasing experience with Peter Demetre recently. About nine months ago I began looking at a luxury watch purchase and was torn between two specific watches. I went to MP Demetre Jewelers and gave both watches a hard look. Peter let me try them on, answered my questions, but never tried to steer me in a certain direction. Incidentally, while both watches are expensive, one is roughly twice the price as the other, and the stereotypical salesperson, I believe, would have tried to guide me toward the more costly option.I left his store feeling certain that, when the right time to buy came along, Id definitely buy from him. I researched these two watches often, and when I traveled, went to other authorized sellers/jewelers to see the same two pieces. The salespeople at those stores always tried to point me in the direction of the more expensive watch, and were the standard high pressure sales types. This turned me off, yet simultaneously affirmed my decision to ultimately buy from Peter.I continued to research on-line, and when enough time had passed that I was sure my desire for the watch wasnt just a phase Id been going through, I went back to Demetre. Peter remembered me, and again let me try them on, with no pressure. I knew then more than ever that if nine months had gone by and this guys tactics hadnt changed, then he was the real deal. I was in the market for a Rolex time piece and went into several businesses, both chains and locally owned businesses in my region to learn about, look at, and nail down my selection. I will say that Peter at Demetre Jewelers exhibited the highest level of service, professionalism, knowledge, and pleasant shopping experience by far. He even got creative on a present for my wife to help cut down on a wait for her. Even though she ended up needing the smaller size after all he was still willing to try a slightly larger just to see by chance if it would be good for her. Wasnt even my idea, he just wanted her to share in the excitement. Anyway you can rest easy knowing that service is a premium here in this business and prioritized to earn your business and take care of you. You just dont experience this level of service anymore as old fashioned values are harder and harder to find. When you do find them you want to support great business practices such as those Demetre exemplifies. Another note when I went into some other authorized rolex dealers I was treated as though I didnt have the money to purchase one of these watches and spoken to as if they were better than me or above me. While on a visit to the Campus of CofC for my son, I decided to inquire about a hard to find watch that no-one seems have in stock as a surprise for my sons upcoming graduation this weekend. The outstanding response to my email inquiry and the constant timely replies to my repeated pestering about an item that Mr. Demetre could have easily sold to a number of eagerly awaiting buyers, was to be outshined by his actually coming through for us at the eleventh hour. I have an old Omega watch that I couldnt find much information about online. Omega lists this store as their dealer in Charleston so I figured there wasnt a better place to go. I was wrong.I walked in and all of the sales people were busy but I got the attention of one by walking over to the case of Omega watches. She quickly got rid of the customers she was working with and came over and asked if I needed help. I showed her the watch and asked if she could tell me anything about the watch like which line it was from, when it was made etc.She said it was an old Omega watch which wasnt very helpful (it was given to my mothers aunt 40+ years ago, I know its old). She said that since they didnt make it anymore, she couldnt tell me anything about it but it was 14K gold so there was some gold value in it. She said it appeared to be from the 40s or 50s despite an inscription dated 1970 on the back of the watch.If it were just a random jeweler, I would understand but being the only official Omega store within 100 miles, it seems like they should know SOMETHING or try to be more helpful than telling me to destroy the watch for scrap gold.Very disappointed in the lack of knowledge about the product line that only they can sell.Edit in response to the owners comments below:1. Immediate assistance is one thing. Actually seeing a salesperson dump another customer because Im looking at something expensive is bad customer service.2. I never said in my review that I asked for a favor or expected an appraisal be done for free. This was an assumption on the part of the owner. I actually went in expecting to pay for the service. In fairness to the store, there was no charge for the saleswomans lack of knowledge.3.Had the saleswoman said anything even remotely close to what the owner said in his carefully crafted response, I would not have posted the bad review. Had she simply said, I dont know and suggested another jeweler that could give me more information, I would not have posted the bad review. The fact that she fumbled through a clumsy statement of what I already knew and then suggested I scrap a working watch for gold content is what prompted the bad review.
