Absolutely the BEST fried chicken we have ever had. Perfect crispiness, super moist and tender, excellent flavor. Biscuits are delicious and black eyed peas are excellent. This was my husbands 3rd helping of fried chicken. Warm homemade peach cobbler with ice cream. YummmmmWould have given 5 star but the gravy needs a little work.
Incredible experience to be able to get a meal in this 1784 tavern. The tavern is set up on a little stretch of land that also host other period buildings, and a general store with gifts and souvenirs. Its conveniently located just a stones throw away from Monticello, so, its perfect to grab lunch or dinner before or after exploring and sticks with the colonial theme of the day.The customer service is awesome. We were greeted by two people before we even entered the tavern, all employees are in period clothing, incredibly friendly, and are on top of keeping your plates and drinks full. The food line is set up buffet style while you get your plate, for $18, its all you can eat. Theyll come around later and if you want more will gladly go up and get you some.Seriously some of the best southern comfort food Ive ever had. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, beans, tomatoes, corn bread, green beans, biscuits. For drinks there is local beer and wine, and coke products. The setting is obviously what counts, a great atmosphere, with period like cups and plate settings by a fire place on tables and stools that youd be sitting on two centuries ago! A truly unique experience that will have you traveling back in time.Absolutely recommend.
It was our first time here. We came on the weekend without any reservations. Didn’t know what to expect other that checking out their website prior— but it sounded interesting. The interior looked wooden and historical. They had multiple rooms. You can sit where you like. We went with the room that we came in. There was a cool patio like room as well. You could either go get your own food like a buffet, or order it from the table and have them bring it to you. We decided to get it ourselves. Small and limited yet tasty food selection. There were green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet tomatoes, biscuits, cornbread, chickencooked different ways and a bit more. For drinks we went with apple cider.Servers wear clothes that match the old fashioned charm and are friendly. The food was fresh and filling. Atmosphere is cozy and brings you back to the past. Had a wonderful time.
Absolutely delicious old fashioned Southern food. Wonderful, kind staff. I cant tell you how much I enjoyed this meal. The fried chicken is the best Ive ever eaten. I felt like I was back home eating in my grandmas kitchen. It was so truly authentically delicious. Also the décor was so authentically historic, as well. It was like stepping back in history. Dont miss this place, its wonderful. It will only heighten your sense of being in another time in Virginia. I applaud the owners for not trying to make it new or hip and keeping it just as it was hundreds of years ago. Just loved it.
As much an experience as a meal! Limited buffet, served on period tableware, in a dark historic pub. The food was good, and the service just as much so. $23 for buffet + drink; dessert is extra and ordered at the table. Be aware that there may be a wait. The place is extremely popular but worth it for the experience.
Wonderful Southern buffet. When my family was there they served beets, Cole slaw, green beans, stewed tomatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried chicken, biscuits and corn bread, an excellent peach cobbler, and iced tea. Gorgeous building. They were busy but it was set up well to handle high capacities. Servers were friendly and timely in their assistance. Great experience.
Very unique. Food was good but nothing exceptional. Would not make a special trip again but if I was in town with somebody who had never been I would go back! Neat experience.
The food was fair but nothing to get excited about. They call it a buffet and at its base, thats true. But, there is very little selection for a buffet. When you go in, the staff is courteous and you get your first plate, after that they get it for you... I didnt like that. I would rather get my own food. Also the price was outrageous for what you get. Almost $50 and that was with water and no dessert, both of which were separate. I dont plan to go back. The ambiance was very cool though.
What an awesome surprise while visiting Monticello! We sat among so many locals who obviously cherish this restaurant. The food is cooked to Southern perfection. The quantities are unlimited for a great price. The setting is rustic with the staff in period dress. Such a beautiful, heartwarming experience.
Me and the wife were visiting and stopped here for a buffet style lunch. The staff and food are top notch!! I wasnt sure if I would enjoy for from back in the old times, but everything exceeded my expectations. Not only did I walk away full, but I recommend everyone come with an open mind and empty stomach because this is a must stop to make!! By the way I had the peach cobbler... Its spectacular!!
Save room for peach cobbler & ice cream! Highly recommend stopping in after a visit to Monticello. They are only 5 minutes from each other. $18.xx for each adult all you can eat buffet. You will definitely get your moneys worth here! Youre shown to the buffet, grab your food, find your own spot at a table, eat, and your waiter will come by and ask what you want for seconds from the buffet and theyll grab it for you. Everyone is dressed in period clothes. The atmosphere is rustic and cozy. Bathrooms were very clean. This place gets busy, up to 500/day in the summer (although not so much this summer due to covid). After your wonderful filling meal be sure to walk it off by walking down to the general store, mill, and other out buildings. They have a few out buildings that are of the time period that you can visit. (Check with them to see if theyre open this season) They have a small gift shop where you can buy a BRICK OF TEA. Yes, like the tea at the Boston tea party. Highly recommend stopping in and getting a great meal.
Great food in a genuine historical setting. You serve yourself in a monitored, clean buffet. Fried and baked chicken, pulled pork, stewed tomatoes, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and various southern sides are all on the buffet and were delicious. Friendly staff with a great system for getting large numbers of customers fed quickly.
Hi! My mom just got her Michie tavern cookbook in the mail, were so excited. Tonight we made the colonial chicken and it took me back to when we visited your tavern five years ago. So excited to try them all page by page. Thank you for sharing your delicious recipes with h us all.
This place was very quaint. Absolutely loved it. The staff was super friendly and helpful.
The food was great. It was alot of steps to get into the Tavern. Would like to see a ramp out front. Its not a handicapp friendly place.
Great food and atmosphere. Also great service.. super cool lil spot before going to pick apples.. fried chicken was on fire
Great place to visit especially if you like to see people that enjoy re-creating a living history of the area. Period outfits, food and drink are excellent. I highly recommend the cold cider with your meal. Small staff, but they go the extra mile to enhance your visit. Its not just food, they have gift a shop and buildings to visit on location. Plan for 1+ hours here...its worth it!!!
From the minute you walk in the staff made you feel welcomed. Fried chicken was moist and seasoned perfectly, the sides were all delicious, especially the stewed creamed tomatoes.atmosphere was perfect with big open windows looking out onto the mountains. would definitely recommend you stop by if in the neighborhood.
Been a long time since I had been to Michie but was delicious and service was great.
Simple but excellent fare. Buffet style- self-serve the first round, then your server will refresh whatever you like. Was a great choice for lunch before visiting Monticello. The chicken is EXCELLENT, and every side is good. Great BBQ too- surprisingly vinegar-y for Virginia, but not quite Carolina style. Not often you find that every side is equal in taste and quality. Even the coleslaw and beets were good a d how often can you say THAT?
Stopped here for lunch before heading up to Monticello, and it was fantastic! We really appreciated the historical setting, but the real star was the food. They serve a buffet of southern classics, with mains like fried chicken and pulled pork. Sides included black eyed peas, green beans, cole slaw and corn bread. It was all so delicious! They allow you to get your own for for the first go around, but seconds are served by the wait staff. They have limited seating due to the virus, but there are still plenty of tables. Its also worth checking out the grounds for the other shops and exhibits. This is a great place to stop and eat if youre in town.
A great atmosphere in a historic tavern. The lunch was very good and all the staff was extremely nice and helpful. My only complaint is that it was very pricey for the quality of food.
Super cool place with an old world feel. We tried all the food and everything is great. Its a buffet style place. Fried chicken is excellent. Will definitely go back when we visit Charlottesville again.
Interesting place but everything wasnt open when we visited, couldnt tell if it ever is. Didnt eat at the tavern, so cant comment on that, but the historical nature of the place was evident. The general store was great. Sizable and fully stocked with everything. Also a historic building.
Really cool place. I wish I remembered the guys name behind the bar. He was a sweetheart and was more than happy to tell us all about the history behind the tavern. Good small dishes and lots of fun for an authentic experience!
Great fried chickens, and they keep bringing it to you until you are full. Atmosphere and staff are great, it like have a great meal back in the colonials days. Food is great price for the amount and quality.
Conveniently situated on the way to Monticello. The best way to view this place is as a themed buffet. The servers are all dressed in vaguely colonial clothing and the table are rough hewn. The food was quite good, with the fried chicken being some of the best Ive had in a long time. It was a nice trip through some southern fare as well such as black eyed peas and stewed tomatoes. The buffet is one price with drinks and dessert extra so it can get a bit pricey. Youll want to go in hungry.
Have wanted to go here for years and so glad the rehearsal dinner for my cousins wedding was here! The food was so good and the hospitality was as well! We ate all the fried chicken!
Food was great and service was outstanding. Staff very friendly.
I loved the feel of stepping back in history with how a 1700 tavern would feel like.☺️ If you are visiting Jeffersons Monticello or anything else in this location, it is a must stop for lunch or dinner. Also, dont forget to take pictures of the other parts of the tavern.☺️
If you like fried chicken in an historical environment, this is your place.
Great stop after Monticello. The food doesn’t look appealing when you walk up but everything we had actually tasted great! There seemed to be confusion over who our server was when we wanted to order dessert, but service was overall great and it’s a great price for all you get.
This is such a nice little place for lunch after going to Monticello! Its nice to get some more history and the food is pretty good.
We were on a bus tour. They had a small buffet sit up for us. The food was good. The girls on the wait staff were awesome.
Randomly we found Michie Tavern on the way to Thomas Jeffersons Monticello.Upon entering staff greeted us and told us if we have any questions let them know.We walked around the store and took a look at all of the items for sale. I found a t-shirt upstairs for my dad and my wife found some items for her mom/herself.Definitely a cool place to stop at. We did not eat lunch/food here.
Southern buffet lunch is fantastic. terrific fried chicken and the stewed tomatoes were great.Very attentive service as well.
Combined with a trip to Monticello. Opens at 11:30 but there are a few things aside from eating to do on site, but most of it is gift shopping. The food is old style southern fare. The stewed tomatoes were delightful. Not quite as varied as the food at the taverns in colonial Williamsburg but still worth adding on to a trip to Monticello. Kid friendly, pleasant wait staff.
Wonderful comfort Southern food for lunch: stewed tomatoes, Cole slaw, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, gravy and rolls or cornbread.
First and last visited in 1972. While there have been changes in almost five decades, the food and the service remains worthy of a visit. Charlie, our service provider made the day. if he is working, sit in his area. Also, the host, a retired 4th grade teacher (unforunately I did not get her name), made our time in line pass quickly. She certainly knows her history. The clerk in the main house gift shop (again, did not get her name) was charming.
Yummy southern style food. All you can eat buffet but very limited choices. I think they offer vegetarian/vegan options upon request. The setting and atmosphere was great. Will come back!
Excellent Buffet with great service in an 18th century tavern. All the buffet items were good. We were too full to try any dessert.
A good place to stop, unfortunately most of the attractions were closed, but we could still walk the grounds. The food was good after a long day visiting Monticello. May be a little pricey for many people, especially if your just looking for a quick bit to eat.
Tourist trap! No idea how this place has so many good reviews. School cafeteria quality food is not an exaggeration. A few salty canned vegetables and greasy fried chicken are all that makeup this pathetic low quality buffet. Not to mention it was 50 bucks for lunch for two. I will say we got a good laugh at how bad this place was.
Food and service are excellent! They serve the best fried chicken anywhere.
We had a wedding rehearsal reception here for our son and daughter-in-law. The atmosphere was beautiful and the food was delicious; and the staff...the staff was phenomenal! Highly recommend, whether for dinner or to host your special occasion.
Good, simple, cafeteria style, early American food with nice ambiance. A good value for big eaters (free refills) but pricey for light eaters.
Category. Love this place. The food, the atmosphere, the service. It never disappoints.
If youre a fried chicken aficionado this is the place you want to go. Havent had better anywhere... period.
Buffet done right! Groups were allowed to come to serving line one group at a time. If you wanted seconds from the buffet, a server would get it for you. Old south country cooked food was delicious. The server brought extra drinks & list of dessert offerings. Great food, great service at a reasonable price.
Love it all the food is so good. And awesome service. 10/10
Michie Tavern provides excellent food and service in this one of a kind historic property located 1/4 mile from Monticello. The fried and baked chickens are their specialty and may be the best in Charlottesville. The seasonal side dishes are also very good. It’s a buffet, so come hungry and eat all you can.The atmosphere and dining rooms give an authentic eighteenth century feel to the experience and there is a tavern upstairs. The outbuildings on the grounds offer many unique gifts and the views of Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains are superb.
The food is excellent the staff is very friendly and helpful. If you go go hungry The fried chicken is a classic .traditional colonial era its out of this world good the sides are delicious fairly well priced
This place is an absolute gem! We didnt know it was there but passed by after trying to visit Montecello and this tavern was the highlight of the trip. Its historic and very well preserved with a lot of options for roaming around to truly experience the tavern feeling. If Im ever back, Id love to return!
Lunch buffet. The chicken and all the sides were very good. We had a group.of 5. Historical building. All Servers and staff were in period dress. Some of the other buildings on the property were closed during our visit.
Eric was very helpful. The woman greeting people so lovely. The tavern was beautiful.
Wow! This place is incredible. We went after visiting Monticello. I loved the historic feel. The food was great and the people were very nice and welcoming! Definitely a must do when visiting Charlottesville!
Awesome evening hanging out in the pub. Great service, drinks, and food!!
Good food...great place...do not slip in before closing and expect the food to be as good as at noon. Cafeteria style serving and nice gift shops.
What a cool experience! Beautiful grounds and building! The staff was so friendly and attentive! The food is excellent. My family thoroughly enjoyed our experience!
This place is absolutely incredible I cant wait to come back
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was great. We had a good time.
I give them a 3 only because my sons ate here a few years ago and loved it! So I was looking forward to going but after we finished our time at Monticello and were ready for a wonderful meal it was closed, and it was only 3:00 pm. So disappointing. I here its the place to go.Terri from Buffalo
Historic buildings, pleasant environment.Well cared for. History buffs partake!
Omg the fried chicken. And the peach cobbler after. If youre going to Monticello after we learned the hard way to resist getting seconds.
My wife and I visited on a cold January afternoon. We LOVED it. Extremely nicely decorated, very cost with the indoor wood fires, and good old-style buffet for $19 per person (all you can eat). Loved the chicken, beans, and corn bread. Extremely nice and courteous service.
Nice place to dine as well as learn a little about history in the local area
Took my daughters, visiting from Texas! Lovev the food, atmosphere and tradition.
Nice little southern eatery attached to a cool period tavern. Food was pricey for a buffet, but good and plentiful. The biscuits and bbq pork were my favorite. Lollie our waitress was very nice. The gift shop had some cool stuff. The place is definitely catered more toward selling stuff than historic preservation. The staff seemed to know very little when asked about the house and just referred us to a paper and the posted signs. But wandering around the old tavern was pretty cool.
Highly recommend!!! The food was delicious, the service was excellent and the ambience was awesome.
This place is very southern-style in dining and atmosphere. Just like gramma used to cook!
Beautiful! Very historical! Excellent food, super friendly staff!
