This is one of the best places Ive ever been to in Chicago, Illinois. The customer service representative was articulate, knowledgeable, cordial and handled all aspects of our transaction with the highest degree of professionalism one can have. As a lawyer, I can observe that in people and wouldnt say that unless it werent completely true. She shared information about the Greek-American family that owned and operated the business, which is what I wanted to know. The style of the business location, inside and out, was everything I expected it to be and more. In fact, I loved the vintage signage even more than I expected I would. It reminded me of a historic movie theatre that we have in my hometown called the Tivoli, in Downers Grove, Illinois, one of the oldest movie theaters in the United States. In addition, and most importantly, what they actually sell is reasonably-priced and of good value. I have always liked receiving candles as gifts, or having them in my home, and I plan to buy candles from Athenian Candle Co. in the future. The Athenians who run Athenian Candle Co. demonstrate Philoxenia in their mannerisms, behavior and etiquette at the store in Chicagos Greektown. I highly recommend visiting this place for those interested in purchasing candles.

Athenian Candle is my go-to source for Orthodox icons. I was in the process of constructing a home altar, but I was dissatisfied with the prospect of printing out iconographic images of the saints and laminating them or placing them behind a picture frame. I wanted something more sturdy.So, a quick Google search took me to AC. I told one of the shop owners (a lovely woman whose name I unfortunately forget) about my need for icons, and we discovered a common thread between us through the Orthodox faith. She helped me to find wooden icons with miniature easels for my patron saint, Christ, the Theotokos, and a few others.AC, as its namesake would suggest, also has a massive collection of candles in just about any color and size youd need.Would recommend!

I hadnt been here since I had left the city of Chicago so I was delighted to find that the staff here remembered me, treated me like family and made me feel completely comfortable as I wandered around their store mesmerized by all their Choices! There are washes here, fresh herbs, charms, religious items, a huge selection of candles, incense, black salt, magnetic sand, lodestones....candle holders, glitter and essential oils here. You will definitely find anything you desire from traditional church candles, to fixed candles and curios from different belief systems and the staff here is knowledgeable and eager to help you find anything your heart desires. They even have some crystals and stones here too so if you wish to make your own special charm bag you have all the tools and items to create anything you wish. You can buy frankincense tears, copal and myrrh and burn these beautiful fragrances on charcoal briquettes. I used to live a few blocks away from this particular candle shop and I must have shopped here as much as three times a week because I love the beauty of candlelight and the healing, pure vibes of love that this particular candle shop carries. There is definitely an energy of joy here and thats extremely important especially if youre going to create a feeling of sanctity and safety and well being in your home. I will definitely be returning here much more often and I absolutely loved my shopping experience this early afternoon especially since everyone remembered me and seemed genuinely interested in my return visit. You are treated like family here and their items are plentiful and so crucial in setting up a loving vibe to bring back to your own space.

The administrator was very rude. I was trying to open a small crack to sniff the pine incense (since they didnt have any open) and he rudely told me not to open them (when I wasnt even trying to begin with). I mean how do you expect people to buy your stuff when most of the incenses are inside boxes and you cant smell them? He should take lessons on how to improve his people skills. Taking my business elsewhere.

Best service and best place for anything of your needs.... definitely has changed my life.Went today after going so many times and owner was so rude...all over a dysfunctional candle. Was very disappointed. I was not even giving him an attitude......guess he is not in the holiday mood. I will light a candle for him tonight.

I am a religious person and I love visiting this religious store when Im in town its is the only one that Ive known since a child that hand crafts theyre own candles.that are Used for church altars. The Public is also allowed to purchase candles oils and incense and many different religious articles.

If you are Greek and need the candles for religious purposes, you probably have heard of this place since you were a little kid. It is oriented mostly towards Greek Orthodox but I see also Americans coming in for the many incenses. The staff is friendly and helpful. Great place!

This place... was out walking and decided to step in because the girlfriend likes candles. I thought it a bit odd that there was signage indicating picture taking wasnt allowed, then I discovered why. This joint is full of superstitious cures for everything. Drug dealers and other undesireables in your area? They have some oregano to sprinkle under your sink to ward them off. Husband cheating on you with that s**t down the street? They have some floor cleaner that will stop it dead in its tracks!Nothing here I personally would want, but its good for some entertainment.

The owner kills her own business by treating the customers as if they are suspicious and by having $20 minimum which in Chicago, the law is that you may only require up to $10.

Right at the corner of Halsted and Jackson this store has been family owned for four generations. In business for 95 years, best known as a reputable wholesale and church supplier of hand-dipped (one layer at a time), long burning parafin and beeswax candles, in different sizes, thicknesses, volumes. Greek cultural and religious supplies as stefana (wedding crowns), eikona, Byzantine incense, censers, kandilis (vigil lamps).Dont forget the little charcoal tablets (karvounakia) for prolonged safe incense burn. Besides the sacred, admittedly, the secular if not profane is also marketed. Its just business. Washes, candles, oils for all purposes. Charms to ward off the evil eye (matisma). Books that explain such uses and superstitions. Consider the area this store is located, realize it is retail so dont be surprised if items are pricey. Most likely you will find what you want here. Parking always an issue, only off street. But its a great area to explore. Take some time. Enjoy.

Fantabulous! Love this place ! Amazing.I know my Granddaddy probably shopped here ; its 90 years old with all the original Hoodoo stuff.. Plus other paths .. The people are awesome .. Like Chicago used to be.. Its probably one of Chicagos last real mom & pop stores authentic Chicago Greektown! A must if u practice any ATRs Hoodoo and other spiritual paths!

Great selection of candles here -- they have a huge seletion of candles that burn for several days and in several colors for all your hocus pocus needs! They have plenty of other very interesting items; it is, afterall, a religious shop, so they have lots of remedies, oils, herbs, lotions, charms, books, calendars -- you name it. A word of warning about their essential oils; they are phony! They want you to believe their are 100% pure but looking at the qualitiy, it is obvious they are cut with fillers. Price too: some of these oils are verrrrry cheap, which is a big red flag... dont do it! (I buy all my oils online now, because I want to be certain). This shop has been in the neighborhood for many years and some of the ladies working behind the counters have great stories about the neighborhood back in the day. Its a quirky shop to have in the West Loop; I hope it sticks around for another 50 years.
