I feel guilty for giving a harsh review so splitting the difference with a 3 out if 5. Many friends have lauded this book store and authors that speak there, but I found it very average. Located in a strip mall it lacks a warm inviting vibe (all glass and florescent lights). Major caveat and primary reason for not a lower score is that the store is obviously on a pandemic related minimalism (coffee bar closed, book shelving minimalists). I hope to visit again and then revisit this review.
What more could be said about this store with such a fabulous Track record, knowledgeable and helpful staff, great administrative policies. Every visit has been a pleasure.
Book Passage is an independent bookstore that deserves your attention. They have a large inventory which will meet all of your needs. Any book can be delivered or picked up. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They have created a series of book talks that can be viewed on line. Listening to the authors can stimulate your interest and provide insights into the book.A Book Passage experience will be worth the investment of your time.
What a wonderful bookstore! The selection is so good and the staff really knows the books. You can count on their recommendations for great reading!
Good selection of books, especially for a small bookstore. It is run by true book aficionados/staff. Lots of chi chi nicknacks to spend your dime on. There is also an extensive travel book store 20 steps outside to the right that offers practical travel goods too. Check it out!
Nice cozy bookstore with a great cafe. For $10+tax I got a toasted turkey club on wheat and a cup of the soup of the day (turkey chili in this case). The sandwich was fantastic. Nice fresh veggies, a good amount of turkey and nice crispy bacon. The chili was tasty too.The kitchen in the cafe closes at 7pm so come early if you want dinner.8/10
Gorgeous brick and mortar bookstore
Inviting shop with resourceful staff, easy pickup for online or phone orders. Excellent for special requests and gift items.
I am a little sad. I bought a $22 note card box hoping to support an independent bookstore and artist, and two of the beautiful cards were just.....not...there? I called and they offered to exchange but since Im visiting from out of town, Im basically taking the Hit. A little disappointing that the employee didnt check to see if the cards were there (and yes Im kicking myself that I didnt either), and that the manager offered no explanation or apology. One employee did apologize over the phone. The store itself is fine, and employees are friendly. Independent bookstores tend to carry more unique books and items so thats pretty much all there. Otherwise, I hate to say it but, if youre looking for Tom Killion cards, consider saving ourself the trip and order from the heyday books website unless youre local.
Their location was convenient for me. Small store that has good selection of books. Prices was reasonable and their employees were nice.
Nice quiet place. Helpful staff.
Started shopping at BP eight years ago - when it was at its acme...fabulous staff! So smart and accommodating. The Author nights were great esp with Dana (once a stand up comedian)We all just rolled our eyes( shook our heads) when the owner demeaned / yelled at staff. One by one...all the staff (the cement who held the store together) left...sad, sadder, saddest of times.
Love this cute little book store. They have a HUGE travel book section, travel knick knacks, which was our topic of choice today, so we picked up several things. Also a good place to get bookish gifts, used books, journals. I will definitely be coming back soon! Nice little cafe with tables in the building across the way. Ive seen author talks here before and I really enjoy the community feel of this store.
Its a coffee shop in a fantastic book store. Enough said. The coffee is excellent and the staff are friendly. I try to go every time Im in Marin.
Another wonderful Bay Area bookstore, staffed by great people. They have a good travel section, although diminished quite a bit in size from ten years ago, but then again, sometimes Im amazed that anyone besides me still buys travel guides. Good also for art, fiction, and most other categories. Strong community spirit. Lots of events: It seems that every writer who swings through the Bay Area reads there. And they have a room with secondhand books that supports a local hospice.
This store is a Marin institution and high fives for surviving the demise of so many other stores while staying relevant with their unique author visits, classes in everything to do about books and writing, a lovely cafe, and a warm feeling. Visit your local indy store! ♥♥♥
Great time there....
My favorite bookstore. I love it! I just wish that buying audiobooks there were easier.
Lots of selection of both new and used books. Also have nice selection of jigsaw puzzles and bags, Cafe food good. I go to hear my favorite authors. Big parking lot.
They have a small section in the back where I found used travel guide books of tamalpais, africa and the national parks. All great finds for me. Let the adventures begin. Great book store.
I love the cafe here. Great healthy food with indoor and outdoor seating. An environment that is welcoming and a great place to browse books.
This is the kind of bookstore where you can find a book youve never heard of but fits your interests perfectly. It was tough to narrow down my choices, but they have a great selection of fiction, non-fiction, and everything in between. Perfect independent bookstore vibe.
Ive worked as a barista and I know how brutal it can be. Especially in Marin. So I always try to be super respectful, give plenty of space, tip, say please and thank you to people in that position. That however did not work with the girl behind the counter on Friday evening. The scene is like this: A handful of teenagers hanging out at the counter—her friends. She wants to look cool by acting crabby and short. She steams the latte for about 2 seconds flippantly and it comes out the temperature of pool water on a muggy day. Shes showing off to her friends that she can act like a *****. I even hear one of them call her on it as I walk away. One of those awkward high school teacher moments. This was a surprise for what has been the coolest bookstore in Marin for ages.
People are wonderful and so helpful. Kind of place you wish you could just hang out at, even with masks on.
My boyfriend and i bought four books that had been on our wishlist forever. there was a seller with badly tattooed eyebrows that followed us around while we were browsing, which was insulting. so if sellers have followed you around before be wary.
This is one of the best independent book stores I have come across in a long time. It is big and by big I mean split into two book stores. The larger one has all the books you may need, a coffee shop, and a small presentation area for groups or book signings. The other is for children. The books are priced between the deals on Amazon and the full price you would expect to pay at a Barnes and Noble. The extra autographed copies from writers are available for sale at no extra cost as well.
Good store - funny place. Big Book Fan / Stanford Grad, close personal friend applied for a job. He was actually Offered $11.50 an hour.Really? He mangaged a store in Colorado...and turned away the paltry offer. Good speakers.
Staff is friendly and helpful. Two-stores-in-one to wander through. New, used, and autographed books. Found three books Im excited to read.
Large quality bookstore with tons of titles, famous author readings and a lil cafe attached. A Bay area staple.
Book passage is an incredible independent bookstore. they carry a wide range of fiction, literature, nonfiction, biographies etc. Published authors perform readings on a regular basis. Please support your local independent bookstore!
Teacher Meagan is great and totally gets the kids. Weve gone dozens of times to watch her. The kids love her.
A great place to meet friends and books. We need more of these placea in this day of online everything. I just had a muffin and latte.
Great place to buy books and attend author talks. You can take amazing classes too in many subjects. Enjoy.
Book Passage is one of the best bookstores left in the country. Readings, classes, and great help.
The staff here are all very friendly and helpful. They also host all manners of authors very regularly, with sometimes two or three authors coming through in a day. Overall a fantastic place to find a book or three
Amazing place.
Its a decent book store. The only thing is, I went in there for a reading and it was a bit confusing to find since they have 2 buildings. Theres nothing special-or good even- about book passage, but its a normal, decent book store. And way better than books a million
Wonderful bookstore with a great dedicated space in the back for author talks. The deli/cafe is awesome with outdoor seating to enjoy a cup of coffee, a pastry and a new book in the sunshine.
Very good food, and the service is great at their cafe. The bookstore is nice and quiet aswell.
I love this bookstore and visit whenever I am in town. They always have something interesting to read or recommend
Great bookstore to just browse and there’s a nice snack bar here tooI come here several times a year for our server readings
My favorite bookstore in Marin--if not the entire Bay Area! In addition to their friendly, knowledgeable staff and solid cafe offerings, their calendar is consistently filled with author events and valuable classes as well.
Independent and high quality! Calm and well stocked. Great speakers, nice cafe and side gift shop. Love this place!
Awesome Service - Beyond KindBought a book in Nov as Xmas present. Realized upon wrapping Dec 22 wrong version. Went in without receipt looking for help. Manager scowered shelves for 20m with me no shelf unturned. She promised to find one and special ordered. 12/24 received call to pick up correct book on store credit. Mission accomplished. THIS is why we need to support local.
If u still know how to read or are literate this little gem of a bookstore is a nice place to go...cozy,a bit overpriced but so what w nice people n a Marin staple...very homey....been there a long time...check it out
A beloved local bookstore with great community spirit. Wide selection of books.

I love this place! I ordered a book online from them, they were able to get it personalized for me by the author (who I admire more than the world), they send me emails on the status, and well just over all PERFECT!!
Wonderful bookstore, huge selection of books. They also offer a lot of interesting classes (languages etc.) The cafe has good snacks too.
A wonderful little cafe in a wonderful book store!
Be it in Corte Madera, Sausalito or San Francisco - Book Passage is an excellent place to buy books and learn about what books are currently available and interesting.
Book Passage never fails to surprise me with its selection of hard-to-find books. It is also a great place to hear authors read.
Super selection of books and plenty great author events, classes and workshops. There is even a cafe with comfortable seating for reading and writing.

Have to stop by more with the kids and get some wonderful books
Perfect AM spot for books, cafe, magazine and cards. Also impressive list of ongoing classes and featured speakers.
Very nice collection of both new and used books. Well-organized and comfortable for browsing.
In addition to a good selection of books, there is a corner where small snacks & beverages can be enjoyed. Childrens books, used books, and travel items are in a store a few feet from the adult store.
Sad - all the super-smart staff who knew books are gone. The once Great speaker series - we miss Dana, the emcee. he was the Best! (Note: Dont ask the owner anything - she has a very volatile temper and yells at staff and us customers) Now, this is a a do-it-yourself-bookstore.
Wonderful collection of books and more. Excellent customer service!
Great bookstore, many lectures for and from an eclectic selection of writers. Cafe with sandwiches, soup, snacks and comfortable sunny or shaded outdoor seating if desired

Was there recently for a book buying marathon and was so put off by Elaine/Owner who was actually yelling at her staff. I love this store and see there is a big turn over in staff, Never see the same clerks.
