Sherwin-Williams stain is not the quality that it use to be as was told me by their expert who came to look at my house. He told me that EPA had made them remove some of the quality in the stain to meet the EPA requirements. He said that is why after 2 years, the stain is cracking and pealing everywhere. He told me the only way now to remedy this is to apply 2 coats of primer and then a coat of paint....then it would stick. I had paid a professional apply the stain 2 years ago. I have been in my house 30 years and have had it stained every 5 years and I have never had such a disaster as this. At $45 a gallon, you expect a more quality product. After all is said and done, I am out $5500.
