The aesthetic of the entire store was fit for any avid book reader. There was even a fun little section for little kids. The workers were very friendly and make the effort to have a conversation.

I went in here the other day and I loved it! Local bookstores are always quaint but this one I loved. I found a book that Id been looking for, and best of all they had a bunch of pride pins. Love to see acceptance around Davis :)

I vowed to only buy books from this cute local bookstore (selling new books, not used) for as long as I live in davis. The store is welcoming, well organized, and fun to browse. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The selection is good and the staff is willing to order anything they might be missing. Furthermore, their online store is easy to use and ships quickly to davis residents.I cant say enough good things - Ive never been disappointed when visiting.

Great little bookstore with lots of choices! I went in there for the first time a few days ago after receiving a gift card. Friendly staff, and fair prices. Probably equivalent, if not better prices than your average Barnes and Noble.

I was so happy to find a nice local bookstore with a great selection and friendly staff. Their recommendations helped me easily find a great book. They have neat stickers and local stuff. We will definitely make this our local stop when coming through Davis.

On two separate occasions the staff has taken time to suggest books to my teenager, even walking them around the store and asking questions about likes and dislikes. I wish we lived closer. Its a great bookstore.

The most helpful and kind staff. It makes me feel more comfortable shopping at Avid because I can see how serious they take covid safety. My kids always feel welcomed and find something every time we go in. I am so glad to live in a town with a great bookstore!

The Avid Reader has been my favorite bookstore for decades. Usually I like to leisurely browse to find new titles. These past few months, I have called ahead to see if they have the books I am looking for. If they have it, they will pull it and put it on hold. If they do not have it, they will order it for me, and then call me once it comes in. It allows me to quickly come in, make my purchase, and leave. My brief interactions have never felt rushed on their part, and the staff have always been friendly and helpful.

I had a great experience today at the Avid Reader. I received help finding books for my grandchild and felt safe with the precautions taken. I will shop there first for my books now, as I have in the past.

The avid reader is a great little bookshop in the heart of downtown Davis. Great atmosphere and friendly staff, a good stop for any book lover.

Last time I went they were playing Irish trad music and it was a lovely accompaniment to picking up a book theyd ordered for me. Ive never been anything less than pleased after a visit.

Great local bookstore. The employees are knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. If they dont have a book you want, theyll order it for you and call you when it comes in. You dont pay until you pick it up. I highly recommend supporting this local business over web retailers like Amazon.

We love the local bookstore. Lots of books to choose from and they gift wrap. I usually choose books for birthday parties. They have a really nice childrens section with places to sit and read. Also a nice older kids section upstairs. Very homey and welcoming.

This store used to be great and then the original owners were replaced by liberal activists who ruined the store with propaganda and bias book selections. The staff are also young and condescending; you are better off to go somewhere else!

Very small selection of nonfiction books :( So many biographies, WWII, and US politics. Which would be fine but that seemed to be all they carry. Along with some pop psychology and books on birds. The section upstairs for young readers was amazing though! A perfect place to lounge and read.

Stopped by on a trip from out of town. This is a classic locally owned bookstore with a great selection of current bestsellers, the best works of the last few decades, and the classics.The staff is deeply knowledgeable and seem to go out of their way to help with all requests, no matter how arcane. Wonderful place to hang out and browse or catch a live reading.Their literary t-shirt collection is full of cool gems I’ve never seen elsewhere. Not to be missed.

There is a great selection of books, and knowledge staff. The kids section upstairs has tons of classics as well as things currently tending with kids. There is a comfy chair where kids can sit and read books to see if they will like them. The toy store (same company) had a great selection of educational toys at a broad range of price points

The place looks crowded on the outside but inside looks like a hole world. One gentleman helped me out to find the book a was looking for, he also recommended me another book that I end up buying as well. I would totally come back.They not only sell books they have a variety of different things.

Edit: I am happy to see that this place has a new owner and appreciate their taking the time to reply. Unfortunately, I now live in Oregon and it is unlikely I will be going back to Davis, but I do wish them good luck.One really wants to like the only independent bookstore in town. Unfortunately, I cant seem to get over the fact that its owned by bigoted creeps, who have written editorials in the local paper supporting anti immigrant hate and hosted parties celebrating electoral disasters.

Love this place!! An be a bit pricy but can also be very much worth it as well. They are well stocked and the staff are very friendly and willing to aid you of you ever need anything.

I have to start this review by saying that I lived in Santa Cruz for 20 years where the mantra was Buy Local which was all well and good when the business was run well. Many times the local businesses were badly run and managed with apathetic customer service people. This is not the case for The Avid Reader. This is a GREAT bookstore where you definitely should be shopping. Their staff are knowledgeable, kind, and courteous and their selection is fantastic. Theres also The Avid Reader Active just a few doors down which is a great store for childrens gifts. Highly recommend both stores; this is a local business well worth supporting.

I dont know how this store could possibly have such good reviews. Absolutely awful customer service!!!!! the owner was so rude and unprofessional. I will no longer support this local business.

Very Knowledgeable and had what i needed

This is one of my favourite places. The staff are helpful and friendly, they have a wide range of books and journals, and the location is right by some great cafes to read at. The books are all new, so they are more expensive then buying online or at a used bookstore, but they do have a sales cart if youre on a budget.

This is an independent bookstore I have found books that I like that arent featured in the standard bookstore. For example! I read books written by Parker Bilal whose books arent featured by any other local bookstore.

They have a large collection of books and a very welcoming environment. Always been able to get what I want.

Very nice employees and its nice and quiet. You can make requests for books and have them arrive in a week to a month.

I’ve always thought this was an excellent bookstore. Recently however my friends and I have had several experiences with the staff that have caused me To rethink my opinions. One experience had a staff member rudely interrupt me reading my book, scolding me about how I shouldn’t hold a book a certain way. I understand the concern, but it was very condescending and I felt like a child. Another incident with a friend of mine had another blond staff member talk down to him. It was raining and he only took a moment to relax in the bbookstore while he was simultaneously grieving a friend who recently passed away. He was not loud,disruptive, or taking up space (the lady said kids need the chairs to do their own thing but I dont see the reasoning behind that with no kids in sight).I think the brand has potential if the staff worked more towards creating a welcoming environment for passionate readers and sstudents instead of accosting them over minor issues. I hope they see this and try to do better in the future.

Nice little place to get books. It was our first visit and it was a big change buying books here. Prices were comparable with other online and brick & mortar stores.

This is the quintessential experience you conjure up when you imagine a cozy bookstore. Its chok full of interesting reads and knick knacks to carry home with you. It even has a games table tucked into a back corner. So visit and make yourself at home!

Nice staff but the books are somewhat disorganized and it can be hard to find something specific. The store needs to be cleaned and rearranged to use the available space better and be more clearly labelled.

No superstore but richly stocked, notably with reading for children and teens. Staff is knowledgeable, efficient but warm as family.

I always thought this was an amazing bookstore,I would hang out in the top lever and read for awhile. Recently, this lady who worked at the place said that me and my friends had to leave and that it was only for costumers.I was angry,so I left and told other people about what happened.

Felt crowded. And for a hometown bookstore it did not have the hometown feel. There is no place to really sit and read, or to do a book signing.Selection is pretty standard, although I do like how they organize it by subgenres.

I came hoping for a vast selection of new and used books that I could peruse and ultimately spend a bunch of money. What I found was just a bunch of recent NY Times best sellers and moleskin stuff. It was a nice shop but I felt it was severely lacking.
