Fantastic Experience. Instructors are very knowledgeable and personable. Every day they push you develop your skills and conditioning and cater each class to your development. Whether you’re a beginner or pro this is a great place to learn and have fun.
Great sense of community and classes are taught by subject matter experts. Loved working out here!
I have been so fortunate to have been able to get around Manny. I learned even more unarmed combat with him than with elite instructors from when I was in the military. Also, Im so thankful for the tai chi lesson. Every human should do some tai chi every day. World problems would get solved measurably faster.
I love this place. Friendly staff, flexible payment options, and great people.
Only being going for a few days but man I love this place and would recommend it to anyone kids adults you name it.
This place is amazing! All of the instructors are great and very friendly. If your looking for a new way to get in shape this is the place. You can learn self defense and get the workout of a lifetime at the same time. I leave dripping wet and happy every time! I have a young son that i enrolled as well and he enjoys it very much. I can see the discipline and motor shills coming together nicely. If your on the fence, jump!! You will not be disappointed.
This place is amazing. The children’s after school program picks up children throughput the city and teaches them martial arts.We plan on enrolling our son here. We have taken the Tai Chi Class which was wonderful. The instructors are very patient and knowledgeable.Thank you Tama.
My son is 6 years old. He loves this place.Grand Master T. Works very well with all his students Ive seen so far.I would highly recommend this to anybody.
From the moment my son walked in the door they treated us like family! Both of kids are now in a discipline at the gym!! Very clean, great prices, and just an amazing people!!
The family feel is great: clearer information about programs and instructors, or simpler modern payment options would make it even better. That said, we saw our sons coordination improve greatly, making it a great experience overall.
We have been a member of this school for 2.5years. The staff is incredibly friendly and good with kids. As a military family, we move a lot. My son earned his brown belt from another dojo, and while it was not expected, Master Taningco allowed him to retain his rank, but worked with my son to learn the material and techniques expected of brown belts within Master T’s system. I like the experience they get with weapons and beginning self defense. As COVID restrictions begin to lift, the school will work on sparring. They offer a variety of martial arts styles and encourage students to train in more than one discipline. The pricing is fair and just like anything, the kids will be good if they practice at home, not just during class. We have enjoyed our experience here and would recommend this to anyone with kids, or adults wanting to learn a martial art.
TAMA has been a great experience! Since my first day, Master T and his staff make you feel welcome. The depth of martial arts in this school is incredible. If your looking for karate, Chinese martial arts, BJJ, Muay Thai or FMA...they have it! The school is very spacious, clean and well equipped. When youre there, youre there to train but at the same time cant help but have fun. Camaraderie amongst everyone is great, no gym egos here. But what is here is the emphasis on students to train safely and avoid injury. Its remarkable TAMA has trail blazed martial arts in Dayton since 1976 and is still teaching new generations! I Highly recommend TAMA! Two thumbs up!
TAMA Family Martial Arts is a lot more than just learning martial arts. Grand Master Manuel Taningco is an encyclopedia on martial arts. He is very patient (I require a lot of it). He is very particular about executing the move we are learning that night in perfect form. When he works with the children, he makes sure the child is understanding their lesson. Not only does he get the lesson through to the child, he throws in a little history of the style they are learning. And martial arts doesnt even come to being all that he provides in the field of teaching. At one point in my life, I was not a good person. My character needed a lot of work. He is always giving me instructions on how to live my daily life (still to this day). He gives me a step by step plan, and explains the reason for the steps to be taken. Not only is he an excellent martial arts teacher, but he is an all around good person. Everyone on the TAMA staff is. If you live in the Dayton area, I highly recommend learning at TAMA.
You will earn your belts here and get in good physical shape. They teach you real self defense and they dont keep knowledge from you if you are ready. Students with skill and who put in the required effort will move ahead at a good pace. If you a little slow or have injuries like me, they will patiently work with you to help you make progress. They help students of all ages. Expect to learn so much that your brain will be challenged more than your body. If you are you are young and have much free time, I recommend the option where they teach you several martial arts. However, if you have other responsibilities like me, you will learn enough to defend yourself just by studying a single discipline. The grandmaster will make sure that you get much value for the price. You will even get to work with the grandmaster himself. He spends as much time with the lower belts as much as he spends with the higher belts.
TAMA Martial Arts Academy is like a second home to me. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and if you can take the time to watch and listen, improvement comes quickly. With a variety of disciplines for people of all ages, it is definitely worth your time and money. Anyone who says differently most likely did not stick around long enough to find out. If you are motivated and willing to learn, this is the place for you.
I Have been a long time student and wouldnt trade the experience for the world. It has made me the person I am today. It has something for everyone from just in shape to becoming a professional fighter. With master T. being in the black belt hall of fame you get some of the best training around and i have checked out many different schools. Its not just a place to train but the staff and fellow students becomes a second family. One of the best parts about TAMA is the variety of arts available offered.
I have been training at TAMA since 2008 when I transferred up from the sister school in Middletown. Master T. has mentored me throughout my time at TAMA. I now have experience in many areas such as Kali, Muay Thai, bjj, karate, and tai chi. I tested and received my second degree black belt in kempo because of the training and discipline I experienced here. I highly recommend TAMA.
Master Taningco and all of the instructors at TAMA have been very helpful on teaching and training my 12 year old son. My son has enjoyed his first experiences learning about karate and is very happy he joined the school. A great place for both kids and adults. TAMA offers a wide range of classes in many various disciplines of martial arts. Very family friendly and a place I recommend to all.
This is a marvelous place for all aspects of martial arts. The teachers are wonderful and patient.
It was awesome and the instructors are good.
Ive been going to this Dojo for about 2 weeks and so far it has helped me mentally, & spiritually more than i anticipated. Although my first week was brutal i immediately switched to a healthier eating habit (plant based) to sustain more power& energy and Ive been blowing through the drills highly recommended for small children, and adultsMaster T is really patient, truly a master of the arts of fighting
I have known Master T for over six years, and collaboratively developed a program where students from the Dayton Regional STEM school (across the street) participated in two week programs to introduce them to the martial arts. They especially loved the Muay Thai, karate, and bjj. Master T is highly trained, an excellent and fun teacher, and makes learning discipline enjoyable. I have also seen and met many of the adults training at TAMA, and they love the freedom of using the space, Master Ts guidance and wisdom, and more. Great space, place, and programs.
Master T helped me prepare for an amateur Muay Thai fight using traditional techniques hes perfected. Dayton is lucky to have a highly respected Grand Master and literal champion as a resource. Our kids have also engaged in competitive amateur bouts via TAMA. There is something for everyone at this dojo regardless of age or experience level.
With the guidance of master T I had a wonderful mauy thai experience. The classes are all encompassing teaching technique, conditioning, and discipline. This school is worth it in every way and I recommend it for anyone trying to begin their martial arts journey!
Returned to school after moving back into the area this year. I started in 1999 at TAMA and studied for several years before leaving the area but returned when I could for seminars and instruction. Master Taningco is still one of the best and most detail-oriented instructors for all of the styles he teaches. One thing about TAMA that has not changed in all of the years is the sense of family that exists at the school - Master Taningco prides himself on creating that atmosphere. One can see it in his interactions with the children classes which he excels at grabbing young students attentions very easily. He extends that feelings to students as they progress and train and become more and more part of the TAMA family. Im grateful the school maintains this feeling and it is the things that differs from other schools.
Master Taningco is a really talented martial artist and teacher. He uses a very organized curriculum that makes it easy to understand how to move forward. There are numerous styles to choose from. I usually practice karate but in the past I had a lot of fun training with individuals like Christian Toleque in kick boxing and mixed martial arts. Great place to learn and grow!
Great family place to practice! Very clean and good to see such strict adherence to the states regulations to cleaning / disinfection procedures. Recommended highly.
I have known Master Taninco for over 20 years. He is a great teacher and mentor and I have valued his training in all aspects of my life spiritually, physically and mentally.
During my over 30-years of knowing Master T, he has maintained a consistency of discipline in himself and in his adult students in various arts taught including Muay Thai, BJJ, karate, and the Filipino martial arts. Many of his students move on to become excellent martial arts instructors, great fighters in the ring, and even healthier citizens. Master T is also a lifelong student who always seeks ways to improve himself, thus gaining more tools to uplift his students. He has my undying support!
Learning Kali America from Master Taningco has been a joy. He really knows martial arts and applies it to practical defense. Thanks
Master T is a professional. He taught my teenage sons a mix of Muay Thai, Karate and Kick Boxing. They were trained in a very disciplined manner and grew into fine adults who are strong, brave and confident. My family highly recommends Tama Family Martial Arts.Brian Bowman
I’ve train under GM Tanningco for almost a year now. He is very knowledgeable instructor and well respected in the martial arts community. GM Tanningco and his staff are good with kids as well as adults. Very welcoming environment to train. I drive 2 hours one way to train at TAMA. I highly recommend.
The class is actually real muay thai teachings and the training is impressive. & if shy or new they will gradually work with you to build your confidence not like most martial arts classes try to throw you in a fight. The atmosphere is perfect everyone is friendly & helpful the teacher actually focuses on each student to make sure you are using proper technic so you can grasp the full understanding. I implore all to try. They give 3 days free trial before signing up but I guarantee if you have an interest in martial arts you will definitely stay.
Master T is a living legend. Vast knowledge in multiple disciplines Kenpo Karate, Muay Thai, BJJ, Kali to name a few and in the Black Belt Hall of Fame. I received my black belt from Master T in the 90’s. And I’m so excited that he is still at it and teaching my son. Highly recommended for the whole family.
Challenging yet rewarding.
I have been in Martial Arts for over 60 years. My experience with Tama Martial Arts is incredible. Grand Master Taningco is and has always been a great inspiration to all he has come in contact with. I would recommend that if you have any desire for you or your familly to learn and develop a martial arts life style, or just learn to defend yourself and your family. go to TAMA Martial Arts Institution.
I’ve been going to TAMA for over a year now to train bjj and Muay Thai and I love it. The rates are fair and the training is exceptional. Master Taningco and all the other instructors are world class, knowledgeable martial artists.
Great training!
Great training, discipline and diverse martial arts training in May Thai, bj, karate and kung fu just to name a few for adults and kids. All under Grandmaster Taningco who I have been a lifetime student and friend. I personally have benefitted greatly, physically, mentally and better for my association with this martial arts family.
I started doing karate at Tama when I was very young because it has excellent classes for a variety of martial arts and teaches everyone, from kids to adults, the importance of training and discipline. I now do Muay Thai and bjj and love both classes! Tama is overall a great community and place to train martial arts. Master T is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had and I highly recommend Tama to anyone looking into martial arts.
Master Taningcos program is the best I have experienced. He offers many training programs suited for people of all ages from children to adults. Brazilian Jiujitsu, Muay Thai, Karate, Kung Fu, Akido, Tai Chi and my personal favorite Pilipino martial arts consisting of Arnis deMano and Kali weapon arts. Not only does Master T teach us street ready martial arts, but instills deep discipline that has enabled me to press on even in the most difficult of situations. I highly suggest anyone looking to study a martial art check out TAMA Martials Arts Center!!!!
Excellent martial arts facility. Multiple styles available. Patient and knowledgeable staff. Recommended for rehab (tai chi), self defense, competitive unarmed fighting (Muay thai, BJJ, kickboxing),and traditional martial arts ( karate, kung fu, akijitzu).
Prior to attending TAMA, I studied Hoan Taekwando as a student of Greg Roy. I practiced for 4 years, starting at white and ending at a first degree black belt. In comparison to my previous studies, this school has taught more practical self defense techniques (knife defense, open handed, etc.) pushed me harder than my previous school, have been more communicative on what material is needed to learn in order to pass in rankings, as well as very understanding when you have a question to ask. I trained from when I was 7 years old, to 11 years old. As I was attending my third year there, they introduced a Brazilian Juijitsu program. Their class started small, and the instructor at the time was only a blue belt. I was taught very little in that class. This resulted in me dropping the class. Yet, after one Juijitsu class with TAMA, I learned a lot, had an amazing workout, and everyone attending the class was friendly, understanding and welcoming to help myself. The sparring classes have helped me understand more practical sparing and fighting techniques and methods opposed to my previous school, whom showed me and enforced small jumping and keeping light on your feet, which resulted in tiring myself out.I have had an amazing time training with TAMA, and hope to continue to train as a student here. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping by, and even just watching a single class.
Great for the whole family. Very good curriculum for the bjj, muay thai, and karate. The instructors are fantastic. Started a few months back in the bjj and since have gotten my daughter and little brother into it. Great competition and self defense training. My daughter and I went to a competition and did very well. Love the people there. Everybodies friendly and are willing to help anytime. Becoming a second family to me. They offer free trials on anything you want to try. Highly recommend it!
I was looking for a place to learn Muay Thai and I had heard very good things about TAMA. I was very happy to see that everything is better than I expected. The classes are very educational, but also tough. We learn technique, combinations, mental toughness, and so on. I can see and feel myself improving every class that I attend. The instructors do a great job working with the students and adjusting the lesson to the different skill levels. I have definitely gotten my moneys worth and I plan on continuing to attend classes.
Master T is an awesome teacher! Ive been going here for almost three years for Muay Thai and BJJ and represented TAMA at BJJ tournements. The training here is unparalleled. You have many options and can try different disciplines with different intensities, from Muay Thai kickboxing and Karate to Tai Chi and Kung Fu. It is a great place to train at for both adults and kids. A big, wide, clean training space with many tools to hone your skills and become your best self.
My family joined Tama years ago and Still are very close to Master Taningco and the school. We trained there until my daughter was born with health problems and had to deal with that. This is a very good school for kids as well as adults. You are taught traditional martial arts and fighting technics as well as self defense. The staff are well trained and great instructors. Not all schools are dedicated to children the way Tama is. Many schools concentrate on adult training only. If you want your children to learn discipline and family values this is your school! Also, I read one review where someone was talking about GM Taningco’s experience and training ability, well all I can say is he has obviously has never put the gear on with him and went a round or two!
I started Martial Arts in the 70s and in the 80s after getting my 5th Degree Black Belt in Hua Kenpo Kung Fu from Grand Master Tom Garriga, I moved to L.A. and worked out with Danny Inosanto, Eric Lee, Larry Hartsell, Benny Urquidez and others. I heard of Manny Taningco, but never met him until 2016 when I moved to Dayton to work at Wright Patterson. I found him while looking for an Instructor for my daughter. When we met, we went down Memory Lane talking about the old school days and the different Masters we trained with. While Manny continued, I dropped out. :(TAMA Martial Arts offers various disciplines: Kenpo, Tai Chi, Kali (stick fighting) Mixed Martial Arts, Jiu-Jitsu and others, while offering a great class for children. My daughter had her first 5-lessons with Manny and then went into the group class with other students from White belt to Black belt. The instructors are very patient and make sure the students understand the techniques being taught. The lesson plan and promotion requirements are published, so you know what they need for the next level. The lessons completed are signed off by the instructors. Unfortunately, work took me to N.C., but whenever were in the area, Ill make sure my daughter has her uniform, so we can stop in for a couple lessons. Maybe one day, well both get our Black Belts from Grand Master Taningco. If you are in the Dayton area, I highly recommend TAMA Martial Arts Center.
Dennis GonzalezAge: 74 YearsMartial arts practice: 50 yearsRank: 5th Degree black belt TAMA Kempo JiuJitsuStudent of Grand Master Manuel TaningcoMartial arts have been an integral part of my life for many years. My study of martial arts began in 1970 and in 1976 I achieved 1st degree black belt. By 1982 I rose to 3rd degree black belt. My journey took me from Milwaukee Wisconsin to New Orleans Louisiana, and finally to Dayton Ohio.Upon arriving in Dayton I sought out a traditional martial arts school. After trying a number of schools I was still not satisfied. One day, while reading an old karate magazine from the 1980’s I saw a picture of “Dayton’s own Master Manuel Taningco”. Having never met him but being familiar with his reputation, I put my suit on, grabbed my resume, and went to meet him. That meeting took place in 2002, and I have been at TAMA ever since. In the 12 plus years of attending TAMA, something new is learned every time I attend class. TAMA is a traditional school where a number of martial arts disciplines are taught. Each discipline has dedicated black belts who are second to none. All are overseen by Grand Master Taningco. Many schools constantly try to sell the fact that their style is better, and everyone else’s is inferior. At TAMA this is not the culture. TAMA is a very unique school which is respectful to all martial artists. Grand Master Taningco is constantly in collaboration with various other martial arts systems, as well as their leaders making sure that his teachings are relevant. This is the reason why learning at TAMA never stops.Grand Master Taningco is a highly decorated multi discipline professional martial artist who never stops expanding his knowledge. He consistently strives to get the best out of all students. This is why I will have a life time connection with him.RespectfullyDennis Gonzalez
I going to start off with saying TAMA is one of the best choices I’ve made with my life. The instructors are knowledge, passionate, and dedicated to the art that Master Taningco has so carefully crafted over the 56 years of his active training. Speaking of Master Taningco, you’ll be very hard pressed to find a better teacher. He is driven to bring out the best in his students and desires them all to succeed at their goals. I wanted to find the right dojo to train at when I set my sights on getting my black belt in Karate. I didn’t want an easy belt, I wanted one that would push me over years and make me far stronger than most dojos could even hope to. I am speaking as a 7th Kyu Orange belt, and I will happily say that the 8 months I’ve trained so far have allowed me to reach heights I never thought imaginable. If you want an easy Black Belt then this is not the dojo for you. However, if your true target is the knowledge that this milestone represents, then you couldn’t ask for a better school. Come join our family!
Very expensive. $300 annual fee+ $102 monthly+ $65 gi + $100 worth of sparring equipment + $20 shirt. Even the curriculum is $20. Just know you’ll be investing roughly $1800-$2200 a year here for 1Student.The tama ryu kempo (karate) is Great for kids, but for adults well if you do the kempo you will be the only adult. Also there is no lineage to be found. GM Tim Gasper is the said master that taught the kempo to Taningco. And GM Gasper learned from Grandmaster Fong, but you can’t find anything about them. Which is odd because all other arts know their lineage and base their curriculum off of it. Now I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s a family art created by grandmaster Taningco so he made up the curriculum. It’s just not an authentic karate, but it is a self defense program with karate as a blanket name to sell. (Remember people can pay to have certifications and or organizations recognize them. And to win a point style karate tournament you don’t even have to know karate you can use what you know. Hence why in the Miami valley Tournament Association they invite all martial arts schools and GM Taningco won a kata tourney using Kali sticks. Which are not found in any karate kata it’s FMA)The Muay Thai program is good, but I do believe there are better options in the area, with active fighters and coaches that have actually competed in full contact. GM Taningco does not have full contact pro or amateur experience. He claims he was a street fighter but that’s different. You can check to see on tapology or any news and they don’t produce many fighters. They do have a couple guys that are good though. The bjj they have a good instructor, but I wouldn’t say it’s as competitive as other local places and they only have 3 classes a week. Other gyms are cheaper by a lot and offer 20+ bjj classes a week. With multiple high level instructors. And open mat nights. The Kali I will say is legit it’s what master T trained in specifically and it’s their family art.Tai chi, Tien Shan psi kung fu, aikijutsu....if that’s your thing, they offer it.Overall it is a nice dojo, and they offer a load of classes it’s just too- kid centric for me. Which gives off Mcdojo vibes. If you enjoy traditional martial arts you will probably like it. It is good for kids I’d say it’s one of the best options for kids, but they should be upfront and say hey we do not usually train fighters. I will train somewhere where it’s all adults that want to compete and grow as fighters. As my goal is to compete in mma.The price is just also way higher than every school. There’s even a $15 fee if you pay for your belt test the day of the test.... very smart business tactics I just don’t like it. Best of luck Master T maybe I will end up competing with your students one of these days if they decide to compete in mma.Edit: the Master’s son decided to challenge me to a fight because of my review. So changed review from 3 star to a 1 star. Excellent customer service.
I have been attending TAMA martial arts as a student for several years, and I have always been impressed by the high standards and the fantastic teachers. Personally, I practice Aikijutsu, but I also find myself constantly learning many lessons about the wide world of martial arts from the dedicated and passionate experts who attend this academy. The curriculum is well organized, the environment is welcoming, and I always feel that I am being pushed towards success at TAMA.
Great place, my fighters got great work on our visit.
Since the first day we set foot in the TAMA facility, we were treated like family. Mater Taningco and the whole staff has been a positive influence on our 8 year old. He is constantly growing with TAMA in every aspect, from trying new things like sparing and board breaking to learning valuable lessons such as discipline and respect of self and others. The instructors spend valuable one on one time with the students to focus on their personal development to go along with the group teachings. We are proud to say we belong with the TAMA family and would recommend this facility to anyone of any age looking to try martial arts.
We have two elementary school age children enrolled (male and female). Being part of the TAMA family has been a great experience for us. The staff is friendly and always available to answer questions or spend a little extra time when needed. The variety of classes available is wonderful to help expose kids to multiple disciplines if desired. The skill of the instructors is top notch. They are very family friendly and cater to all age and skill levels. Coming here has been great to further reenforcing discipline and respect as well as gain and grow friendships. We feel very fortunate that we found TAMA and we highly recommend them!
I was looking for a place to train Muay Thai and found a whole lot more. The instruction is superb and will cater to all levels simultaneously every single class. You will learn something new every day, whether it be a technique or about yourself or interesting conversation with other members. The members become a part of your extended family giving another meaning to the term Family Martial Arts.
I love this dojo. Master T and staff have been great to me. Very welcoming and patient. I highly recommend for Muay Thai and plan to take my kids to class there as well.
Was a great experience training in this place.
Been going for over a year now with my son. Great instructors for all age levels. Im retired army and this has been a great workout to keep in shape. Update they started an after school program that picks up and trains in karate during the year. They also do homework and get a snack.
Great training with great instructors. Been training Mauy Thai for couple years an have transformed into a great Thai boxer. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to learn fighting fundamentals.
A great place for kids and adults to learn. Grandmaster Taningco teaches a variety of martial arts throughout the week so they get experience in several styles. Highly recommended.
As a student for almost 10 years and instructor for 4 years, I cant see myself training anywhere else! The welcoming and positive atmosphere combined with our tradition of excellence and personal development make this my home away from home. The childrens program is great for developing discipline and self-confidence, and adult programs are wonderful for self-defense and getting in shape! You wont find a better martial arts center in the Miami Valley!
My 5 year old daughter loves learning martial arts. Tamas after school program is great. It allows her to train every day and shes learning new skills in a fun way.
I have 3 boys (12, 8, and 4)who take martial arts classes at Tama. My boys love it here. They have learned so much since we started and their confidence has increased so much. They have lots of friends and love coming here. Everyone here is amazing. Starting with the office staff you meet when you first enter to the instructors and other students. The way everyone works together to help each other grow and improve is absolutely wonderful. We started 4 years ago and could not imagine going anywhere else. Everyone here is like a big happy family.
TAMA has been a life saver! We are a both parents work household. After numerous phone calls to all the local rec centers/day cares, we had zero luck finding an after school program that would pick my kids up (for 6th graders and up). Then we found TAMA mentioned on the local military spouses page. Their after school program is awesome! Not only do they pick up my kid from school, provide a safe environment to do homework, have a snack, but then they teach martial arts! A total WIN WIN!!
Just to be fair here, this review is about my husbands experiences at this school. As someone whos been to many schools over the years however, I have to say that the way this one is run is appalling. We were both hoping to find a place where we could safely practice and share experience with other martial artists. However, what my husband found was little better than a back-alley thug-training-facility run by a man with a questionable background himself. There is little to no supervision during sparring which is highly irregular, poorly structured (what safety equipment you can use apparently changes regularly with how the head instructor is feeling that day) and often, dangerously conducted (students of a smaller build or less experience are often pitted against other students who are larger and more experienced but are given no safety measures or even observed - again, unless the head instructor feels like doing so that day). All of these things are, of course, not mentioned during the kids class which seems to be being used as a slick veneer for basically training little kids to act like criminals. The advice given to these kids speaks for itself (he told them that it is never okay to be afraid when someone is picking on you and that being stronger always gives someone the right to abuseothers - great stuff, to be sure).Ultimately, I opted to write this review in lieu of filing a lawsuit due to the fact that my husband was assaulted by the schools Thai boxing star student under circumstances which are highly suspicious.Prior to their sparring match my husband first explained his situation to the student (that he had been forced to handicap himself by not using certain techniques due to the head instructors personal feelings about him) and asked him to use light contact so that they could both feel safe. His partner then proceeded to pummel him using full contact blows (to which my husband responded, surprisingly, by remaining calm and controlled). When things started to get dangerous (his neck was injured) rather than hitting back with equal force, he tried to stop the match by putting up his hands and walking away. The student then chased after him and continued hitting him anyway. My husband ended up having to shout stop! to finally get the abuse to end. At the end of the match, when he confronted the student about what had happened, he received a threat of more serious physical injury from the student while the coach stood by and failed to react in any way.I still wonder: if no one else had been there watching that day, would his attacker have actually stopped the assault? In any case, that night we were forced to take him to a doctor due to the injuries to his neck. Later, bringing this incident to the attention of the instructor accomplished nothing. My husband was mocked as weak and blamed for not being able to anticipate the abuse beforehand. As I mentioned earlier, I went through a cost/benefit analysis of filing a lawsuit but ultimately, my husband wanted nothing more to do with the school at all. I understood but felt it my duty to warn people, nonetheless. This place is barely a school at all and, if you do plan to spar (as an adult), be aware that you will receive few if any safety measures... And if you do plan on taking your kid, dont be surprised if they start developing serious conduct issues.
TAMA is a wonderful place to learn martial arts
The instructors are top notch. They love the kids as well as what they do. The curriculum teaches the kids self defense, and self esteem. Master Tecnico is a caring man who takes pride in his role in childrens lives.
We enrolled our son a few months back and plan to grow with this journey, The master is second to none and pays great attention to progress, (good or bad) honest and sincere is pretty apparent in all that goes on here. If you take your child or yourself anywhere else, you are missing the very best that there is in the Miami Valley Period!!
The staff is great and the experience is amazing. Very welcoming atmosphere and great people.
Our boys have been attending the after school program here for two years now and not only has it made things easier for their mom and I but grades have improved, self confidence has improved, physical health has improved, and they have made lasting friendships as well. We love what this organization has done for our us!
Ive been taking karate here for around nine months, and recently began studying kali more seriously. One simply will not find more helpful/wonderful teachers than Master Taningco and the instructors here at TAMA. Its a wonderful environment; friendly, welcoming, open, and safe. Master T encourages and exudes discipline, strength, dedication and respect, and being taught by him and his wonderful team will help one grow both as a martial artist and a human being. As a young woman who has gained confidence in her ability to defend herself, has been positively physically and mentally influenced by this studio, and has the utter joy of being a part of this wonderful community of men, women, and children, I truly cannot recommend TAMA enough.
I remember shopping for my first martial arts school. The first thing that struck me about TAMA was the skill of its senior students. I knew I had found the school for me. The kempo program is deep and diverse, and and students are encouraged to explore techniques outside their formal curriculum and bring them into their own personal repertoire. I had the good fortune to study 10 years at TAMA before a work-related move took me two time zones away. My time at TAMA laid a solid, diverse foundation that I continue to build on today. If youre in or around Dayton and looking for a martial arts school, be sure to check it out.
This is the second year my kids have been in the afterschool program. We absolutely love the program and the staff. The kids have learned so much and have both advanced multiple belts. TAMA Family Martial Arts is a rare find and I am extremely impressed with the work they do.Carr Family
Very open and welcoming school. Multiple options for martial arts training, depending on your individual interests.
Good at martial arts but keep it at that only
I will say that the teachers/students that teach the childrens classes are very good with the children! However, the actual organization of the facility, the giving of information to parents, and follow up with concerns is dismal. We have a child in both the youngest class and the older childrens class. Both our children have been to other dojos, and were yellow belts previously. We signed up and began the process of getting their qualifications done to belt test out of white belt. However, we were given bad information as to when belt testing was (it apparently is inconsistently scheduled), and thus missed the belt testing day. We were told we could schedule a private test for $120, which we refused. We are still waiting for the next belt test, which of course is some inconsistent time. The gym has said the kids are ready to test for over 2 months now, but they are still white belts.Ive asked to just cancel our contract which has only 2 months left on it and just be reimbursed the last 2 months that we paid in advance for, and weve been refused.
Master T is a great instructor. All the students are helpful and insightful. I feel like I made a lot of physical gains ever since I started there.
My son and I have been attending TAMA Martial Arts for the last three years, and it has truly been a great experience for me!They have competent staff, a great facility, and I have learned a lot in the area of self defense!
My son has trained in Tama for about 8 years and he loves it. He has been well trained. I score his training high. My son has also dedicated himself to Tama as a worker in various positions. I have came to know the family over the years and they are good people. Tommy enjoys training with Jaden.
I have 3 grandchildren attending this school, the Master is amazing, and the staff as well. Very happy with the way they teach, and, Im looking forward to many years with them. 👍🏼
I have studied Martial Arts for many years. I was introduced to the Filipino Martial Arts while living in Saudi Arabia. This is where I began studying Arnis. When I came back to Ohio, I remembered an amazing martial artist, Master Manuel Taningco. I remembered being amazed by him when I saw him give a demonstration back in the late 70s. I visited Master Ts school and fell in love with the place, the students, and Master Ts instruction. Currently, I study Kali. I would recommend the school and this art to anyone, regardless of background, age, or activity level.
I have kids who take classes here and these classes have really boosted their self-esteem. My daughter has even learned to curb her anger and process it for good. My son used to have horrible self-esteem but since the classes, I have seen a huge 360°!
We are so happy that we selected Tama Martial arts for our son. I did what many others probably do when looking to select a location, and that was to look at the reviews. I read so many great things about Tama and the instructors through the reviews. I signed my son up for the trial lessons. After seeing how Master Taningco interacted with the students, we knew this was the right place. He loves what he does, cares about every student, and truly enjoys teaching the art to others. My son has learned discipline, has gained self confidence and has better focus. My son listens to the instructors, respects them and applies what he learns in class to his everyday life. I also appreciate the way that the children are taught self defense moves. He has learned so much from all of the wonderful instructors and has learned life long lessons. There are many options during the week on the classes to attend which really helps when our schedules are busy. We are very thankful that we found Tama Martial Arts.
Hey James I heard you put on a few pounds😂
I signed my daughters up for karate at TAMA many years ago to help them learn self defense as well as internal discipline. Then I ended up taking karate too! When school and other activities got in the way, we left, but I knew Id be back. Now I take Tai Chi and Kung Fu at the school. Its my favorite part of the week! The instructors are caring and knowledgeable, and the other students have become my friends. In addition to being fit, Ive also learned to deal with stress and self defense. I highly recommend TAMA Martial Arts for families of all ages and sizes.
When my grandsons started only one of them had good grades and good behavior. By the next school year they all are on the honor roll and behaviour improved immensely! Thanks TAMA for the discipline and caring for my grandkids!! And oh yeah they learned Kung-Fu!
Master Taningco has the best classes around his workouts are fun exciting and very challenging I have been training for about 2 years and the muay thai and training at Tama it has helped me for discipline at shcool at home life and everyday life.
This is a very good place for children and adults.
We love TAMA martial arts! Our entire family has trained there and wouldnt go anywhere else!
We are very happy with the after-school program.
Exceptional hard high level martial arts training
A wonderful facility for adults and children.
Tama is an outstanding martial arts facility. I have trained in multiple disciplines, with multiple instructors, in multiple gyms, and in multiple cities. Tama is by far my favorite for several reasons.First, a quality martial arts gym should be clean b/c a dirty gym leads to staph infections and other health problems. From the moment you walk in, Tama smells clean, looks clean, and is maintained in an exceptionally clean state. This is the cleanest gym I have ever seen in my many years of training and would not hesitate to let a child train on any mat or with any gear in this gym.Second, Master Taningco and his staff are fabulous instructors and they are very good with children. They instill discipline and give corrective instruction in a positive, encouraging manner that corrects behavior without putting people down or insulting them. The instructors are patient with young children and explain to them why a behavior is less desirable than another. Instruction is clear and firm, but it is also supportive of learning in a positive, fun environment.Lastly, Master Taningco and his staff are competent, qualified professional martial artists. They are well-versed in their arts and many have extensive experience in competition, teaching, military / law enforcement, and other practical applications of martial arts. The staff at Tama are not people who learned some martial arts and teach it casually for extra money or while going to college. These folks are lifelong martial artists who are dedicated to their craft. In closing, I train with Master Taningco and I have a very diverse background (Krav Maga, Muay Thai, BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing, Judo, etc). He has worked with my background to refine my skills and make my abilities more effective. My foot work is cleaner. My hands are sharper and more precise. My movements are better timed with my strikes. And, I am much better equipped to train alone on a heavy bag when Im not in a lesson.I have been 100% satisfied with my Tama experience. It is competitively priced when compared to what Ive paid elsewhere. I have recommended it to friends...both beginners and experienced martial artists of all ages. This is an outstanding facility with outstanding staff. I highly recommend Tama to anyone looking for martial arts training.
Nice people and good practical training, particularly enjoy the BJJ classes with JR.
My son has been going to this school for a little over a month and we are sooooooo happy with the staff and everything he is learning. His confidence has gone up and we couldnt be happier with the school and master!
I would like to unclog fuel
You will not find a better place to train in all of Dayton and Southwest Ohio. The quality of the head instructor, the senior students, and the passion for martial arts are second to none. I trained all the way to my black sash and became a disciple of Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu!
I started at TAMA a year ago, and I absolutely love it. It is my home away from home. There were two things that impressed me most within my first week:1. Everything was relaxed, yet professional.I was very intimidated when I first thought about learning karate; I had visions of the large schools seen in movies like the Karate Kid. When I entered Tama I was immediately put at ease by the friendly personality of Sue, the front desk attendant.2. By the second class, everyone knew my name. The first week, all the instructors and many of my fellow students knew my name. I would walk in and people would say “Hi, Rachael!” And I would say “hi” and think to myself “whoever you are” because I had not learned all their names yet. ;)Classes:When it comes to the classes, we work hard and have fun. In the group class for ages 13+, there is plenty of variety. Boredom is never an issue, because we are always doing something different or doing a variation of a previous drill.Mighty Mites:I do not have any children in this class (I don’t have any children at all.), but I do volunteer as an aide to Master Taningco during this class. What impressed me most about the Mighty Mites class was how much fun Master Taningco has with his students. It is great to hear the student’s laughing at a joke Master Taningco makes and to see there enthusiasm as they enter the building. “Where is Master Taningco?” they often ask. There is no doubt that students admire and love Master Taningco, and Master Taningco feels the same towards them. For parents considering starting your Might Mite (4-6 year old child/children) at Tama, I highly encourage it. Your child will be welcomed and put at ease immediately.Master Taningco:There is no doubt that Master Taningco possesses a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the world of martial arts. But what I most admire is his patience. Anyone who knows me knows that I ask questions; I will be the first to admit that I don’t understand something. No matter how many times I admit my confusion and ask for help, Master Taningco works with me until I understand the technique.Another mark of a good instructor aside (from patience) is one who knows how and when to praise. Master Taningco is observant of the progress his students makes and does not shy away of complimenting their improvements. A simple word of praise can go a long way. Often times learners (of any subject/discipline) can feel frustrated at what seems to be a lack of progress; we don’t often see the progress we make, and it can be discouraging. But, a simple word from an instructor can boost our confidence and let us know that while we may not see or feel the change, we are definitely making forward progress. In short, I recommend visiting and trying out TAMA. It is a friendly, family-oriented environment with programs for all ages. TAMA offers great instruction in a non-intimidating, always pleasant atmosphere.
