Took three weeks to get a quote on building a complete motor. On the third week I met a guy I believe to be named Andy that does their head work. Very knowledgeable and gave me all the answers I needed on building the motor. Mr. Calvert seemed like he didnt want to actually take on the job from the beginning and wasnt really wanting to answer any questions. He gave me the quote and once I asked another question not even about the price but about the build he threw his up and backed away. I left and called the next day. He finally said he didnt want to do the job.
Called to get a price on resurfacing a flywheel. Was told by the guy who answered the phone that they start at $45. When asked if I could get a more precise price, the employee asked if it had dowel pins or not. I said I wasnt sure but could he quote with and without dowel pins. He just kept saying it starts at $45. I understand a starting price and prices adjust due to overall condition. I just didnt want to go there thinking I would pay $45, and leave paying $200..So I asked what the max it could be, and what factors drive the cost up..Hoping that he could at least give me a range. After all, if its too expensive then Id just buy a new one. He just kept saying it starts at $45 and then asks if $45 dollars would break the bank for me? In the end, he ended up hanging up on me just because I was trying to get a price range..I have used them in the past many times and unfortunately might have to find a new place to send my business
I have stopped by a few times to ask about motor work. They have tons of Old trophies on the wall displaying their old achievements. The younger guy that showed me around was super nice and Knowledgeable the clearly stated they only do what they do. I have called multiple times to be told they are too busy and dont want or need my business. Take that info as you will.
Horrible workmanship! If I could give negative stars I would. I just wish I could put a picture of the main bearings that I pulled out of my engine that was built by these guys. I got my motor back with dirt in the cylinder walls, metal shavings and small chunks of metal all in the lower end. I called Wayne to tell him about this and his reply was that must of happened after it left my shop. I ended up taking it to another machine shop to have them go back through it to clean and make sure everything was done properly. When they pulled it apart Wayne had used a die grinder or something similar to enlarge the groove in the main bearings (something that clevitt bearings sales already done for high rpm engines) the work on the bearings was horrible a 5 year old could have done a better job. He not only widened the groove he left grind marks all over the mating surface of every single main bearing. I spent over 7 grand just on the lower end and this is the product that I get back from Wayne Calvert. If you want a good machine shop DO NOT USE THESE GUYS!!!!
Have had 2 engines built and blocks cleaned and checked.Excellent work....figure job prices up front.Have read the poor reviews on this site, most come from people bringing in their own parts to be assembled.....no shop will do that.Calvert uses new parts that they supply so that they can stand behind their work.I will bring more work to this shop in the future.
I have had Wayne do machine work on several of my engines. He is very good! He does NOT have patience for BS and peeps who need everything explained to them. Age has not slowed him down but it may have worn his patience out for explaining things for people.
Randy built a stroked 351 W to a 408 Ford. It produced 468 hp and 486 ft/is torque
Just called about building a stoker motor. The Conversation was exactly right on and to the point. Gear head lab scientist are no joke and most are good guys who Know What They are Doing. Got several in my family who often will argue about air density. I highly recommend Mr. Calvert Precision Engs.
Wayne Sr. did the machine work on my Datsun Roadster head. He knows his stuff and most of the people who do engine work in North Texas know him. He inserted hardened valve seats so I could burn unleaded fuel and modified the head so that I could use later model valve seals. The only issue I had is that a retainer clip fell out of place and had to be popped back into place. If you dont know exactly what you need done, it may be best to consult a mechanic before approaching Wayne. He is a kind gentleman, but these guys make their money as a speed shop.
Talked to them in early in the year and they would happy to accept my business. I stopped by a few months later to let them know I was ready to bring my motor in (before I just showed up with everything and dumped it in their lap), but now they couldnt take my business because I didnt need to buy parts from them. I even offerd to pay a premium price for the labor.
Absolutely the strangest encounter/conversation I’ve had with a person! This shop was recommended for a valve job on a set of SBF heads. I came there with all the parts just needing a valve job. I was told all my parts wouldn’t be used and they would charge me for all new valves, springs, retainers – etc. I asked why as these parts are new/fine? The guy gets irritated and walks away?
Strange conversation. called about a performance engine build nothing special just wanting a price range and was told he wouldnt be interested and could not help me. I even asked for suggestions and again he said he would not be interested. Guess he has all the work he needs and does not feel the need to explain himself. Glad i found this out up front im sure he is a joy to do business with
Took flywheel in for resurfacing, had it done in an hour. Great job, great price.
Dont recommend them. took him some head job didnt check for cracks after i paid him to do head job so had take head back off buy new ones.
Competitive prices, work done right, willing to deal with a few special requests. Will go back
Wayne did a 327 mill for my friend Ranger Horn who had a 57 Chevy Bel Aire Rag Top. It was a great engine. and brother would it wind to the top of the world but Horn never got over Viet Nam. He drove out into the middle of the street and turned it up G wise until he blew it sky high. It broke my heart. RAnger Horn never got over Viet Nam but Wayne built him a fine engine.
I just called about rebuilding a 350 olds rocket motor and asked 3 questions and Wayne the owner couldnt answer and hung up on me while I was talking
So this morning March 20 I had stop by Wayne Calvert to see if they can rebuild and clean my Toyota 1GR-FE cylinder heads, also clean the block and another parts and the old guy there said we dont do that here, I ask him are you joking he said so no. I guess maybe Im the color something.
