Coffee down under is located inside the Michigan Bank Building, and it is down under. It is clearly labeled, and it is very tiny inside. There are a few tables and chairs at street level. The pumpkin chai tea was very good, they use real pumpkin. If you like your hot drinks hot youll have to ask for it to be extra hot, mine was warm and cooled off very quickly. You can find the speak easy Shelby connected to this place. The batista (during the day) hostess (at night) was very friendly and positive.
How much more down under can you get when you have a cafe downstairs? The Heart of the financial district? This place has clever everything, from location, to the art, to the menu with all of the coffee styles beautifully depicted on the board. Coffee was vibrant (Summer themed blend). Cant wait to see the other seasons!
A wonderful experience as someone who doesnt normally drink coffee! I had a Spooky Spice Latte along with a chocolate chip cookie and both where phenomenal. The barista at the counter was incredibly kind and made conversation with my friends and I and was a joy to be around. There was a cozy atmosphere to the entire store and being there made me feel relaxed and warm against the cold outside.
It saddens me that I cannot give two different reviews to reflect my two totally different experiences in one day. Was told by friends how great their experience was. And honestly, my first interaction with the young female barista was just that! She was pleasant and had great customer service by explaining the different drinks. So much so that I returned a few hours later to grab another latte to hit the road and also use the bathroom, but wanted to use the bathroom first. My exact words were, “I’m going to use the restroom right quick. Is that okay with you?” The young male barista replied, “Bathrooms are for paying customers.” I asked again if I could just use the restroom right quick. Barista repeated himself. I quickly decided that I’ll take my money elsewhere.
I was pretty excited to find a coffee shop in the area that is open past 9pm!Great coffee and the set-up of the place was very unique.
Coffee Down Under is an ideal coffee stop, conveniently located just two blocks from Campus Martius. Their pared down espresso menu—accurately reflecting the coffee culture of Sydney and Melbourne—is a welcome addition to Detroit’s slate of cafes.Bagged beans from Proud Mary, friendly baristas, clean WCs, branded coffee hardware, an assortment of Aussie-inspired bakes, and modern décor complete the experience.(Ask Tarun to show you the soon-to-open speakeasy and the original vault while you’re down under!)
• espresso : as you sip this delightfully colored crema coated espresso the first thing that hits you is a hint of caramel, and then the flavor mellows out into sweet, smooth bliss• @lamarzocco espresso machine• interior : small and secluded this coffee spot has an air of intrigue and a special ambiance catered to the hipster crowd of detroit. The light blue La Marzocco adds a splash of flavor to the urban white brick walls and city style architecture of this eclectic little basement shop• very limited seating, but this only adds to the mystery and charm• limited on outlets• street parking• excellent and timely service
Best coffee and best vibe in Detroit, full stop. I’m officially a new regular! Selection, taste, and attention from the barista makes for a top-quality cup. Highly, highly recommended!
Tiara is the nicest, down to earth, super competent barista that I have ever met. They were very busy taking coffee orders, checking in bar guests and making coffee. She still made me a delicious, out of the box caffeinated beverage because I asked her to make me something different .Great experience! A business stands out by the people they hire 👍🏽
Another great visit, only my second time down under. Tried a Magic (ristretto with just a bit of milk and foam) and it was fantastic. Nicer than a flat white with a less milk and a more coffee forward taste and the sweetness of the ristretto espresso. Barista manning the La Marzocco added a nice touch of art... Not easy on such a small cup
Fantastic find! Very great tasting coffee with fruity notes that I love
The coffee is so good you don’t really need sugar. THAT’S when you know it’s quality coffee. And the vibes are just right. The music, the decor, the service—all of it perfectly in sync.
Very legit espresso. And good vibe. Love it!
Better than I expected. It literally is down under and its super relaxing. I love how its old school and uses the traditional coffee making machines. Definitely better than starbucks.
The Turmeric Chai I tried was unique and amazing. I wish they open one of these in Atlanta soon. The barista was super efficient. Too bad I was driving through town earlier in the day so I couldn’t try the Shelby Bar, but got a chance to see the decor there—fantastic.
The baristas were fast, the coffee was extremely good, the place, hmmm weird, but in a good way :))
Nothing in particular stood out as being particularly Aussie about the ambience and decor. Coffee in a paper cup is not something you would expect down under. No Aussie sweets or pastries. Very tiny with only four seats. Coffee was quite good.
Im so impressed with everything about this coffee shop - from the cute decorations and attention to detail, to the friendly staff, to the delicious coffee - by far the best coffee shop Ive been to in a long time.I got a Magic which is an Australian drink (similar to a flat white with less milk). The Magic was better than any one I had while in Australia. Cannot recommend this place enough!
Try a cup of the Magic, it’s got plenty of flavor without being too strong. Love all of the Australian inspired decor on the inside. Highly recommend.
Nice spot for a great cup of latte. Super friendly barista. Thanks!
Great coffee, super friendly people, a cool vibe. Definitely stop by if youre in the area!
Big fan of the chai! All my coffee drinking friends love it, and for me they made a special concoction with tea that was one of the best hot drinks I’ve ever had.
Good atmosphere, Great coffee, pleasant and friendly workers. Great service. Highly recommend!
Great service, possibly the absolute best Americano you can find in the city.
Had a great flat white here, excited to try the beans at home!
Literally a hidden treasure. Seek it out. Ask about the speakeasy. Tell them Joe sent me. Then dine in the bank vault.
Excellent coffee in a hidden oasis downtown.
Super friendly baristas and atmosphere! Been there often since they opened and quality every time is high.
Secret place great
Great coffee & friendly service
Quirky and coffee was good!
Great tasting coffee as well as nice ambience.
Best coffee I’ve ever had. And super friendly service.
Love the service and drinks!
Skilled baristas, beautiful space, great coffee!
Wonderful Coffee! The hand made syrups were probably the best I ever had. I tried two lattes, one with vanilla lavender and the other with honey cinnamon and they were great! I recommend both of them with oatmilk. The owner was super friendly with my party and I and we had a very nice conversation with her while she made our lattes.Down Under is only FOUR minutes away from the TCF, walking. There is NO reason to ever get Starbucks again while I am in Detroit for Youmacon. A definite must for all the con goers to give them a try!
