Wow! As a parent of a violin player I wasnt sure what to expect from this cute shop. We found Montero via google and swung by to find the owner and wife to be incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about this art! Great client service and personable beyond my expectations. We will return!

I have been a musician all my life but have been thinking about adding the cello to my list of instruments. I stopped in today, just a curious visitor. I left today with a rented cello that looks and sounds beautiful. Ive only had it for a few hours but I cant put it down. I love the sound and playability and the ease of the rental process. Im going to rent this for awhile and then my rental payments will go to the purchase of this cello. Its only day one, but Im in love with this instrument. Im in love with the store. And Im a happy person today because of them. Thank you!

Well, its been two days since I picked up my violin after having a new bridge and sound post cut for it, and I still cant believe how good it now sounds. Michael Montero certainly knows how to set up violin to get the best sound it is capable of. He also knows how to re-hair a bow. Ive had bows re-haired in many places, including Philadelphia, but never better than at this violin shop. Both owners are very knowledgeable and friendly. Finding this shop so nearby was a great experience.

Very knowledgeable and friendly! This is not your typical hole in the wall music store- they sell violins and strong family instruments. Violin, violas, cellos, bass Also to rent. Very good stuff! They have 1/8 and 1/4 sizes, too, for little ones.

Weve had a great experience.Theyve been very accommodating and helpful. They were able to repair my grandfathers violin (in storage for decades) and theyve allowed my son to successfully trade up as he grows. I think its great that a business like Montero is located here in the Lehigh Valley.

Great quality of instruments and service for schools. Unfortunately, we had a less than desirable experience actually in the store. We were excited to go there because normally we only get things exchanged at school. However, the woman we dealt with was judgemental and condescending. It couldve been a fun experience but for us it was not. When we left, I knew if we had to go back to the store, I would just go by myself.

Our family has had, and still does, a great experience with Montero Violins. We had the chance to visit both stores at Emmaus and Stroudsburg and they seem to be running a good and clean business. They are honest and straight forward. We bought a viola and a violin from them and we are very happy with our purchases and the service. In addition to everything else, they have been giving to our community. Thank you Mike and Jennifer!

Place seemed to be ok on its own but the woman who was there working was absolutely awful. Extremely snobby and condescending to the point where I felt uncomfortable even being in there. If someone else was working maybe Id go back there but I dont see myself going again otherwise. I told her I had started playing again recently after over a decade of not playing and instead of being friendly and helpful she was condescending, berated my violin and the fact that I didnt know a particular scale that she asked me to play exactly despite knowing I have a performance coming up very soon. Thats the reason why I started playing again and why I was in the store in the first place and it really made me feel terrible and insecure about myself and how things will go all because she was too much of a snob to behave like a decent human being. It might sound harsh but I wouldnt write this review at all if her behavior hadnt been so obnoxious. I went in there expecting a friendly person passionate about violins and music hoping to be able to ask questions and get advice on what to get and instead left feeling humiliated and terrible about myself and my violin. I only bought the one thing I really needed(a new bow) without asking about anything else because it was such a bad experience and I just wanted to leave as soon as possible.Im sorry to give such a bad review to a place that seemed like they had nice products but she really needs to learn how to behave like a decent human being and not berate people trying to get back into playing. Absolutely terrible attitude and astounding levels of snobbery with a facade of being nice.

PARENTS: BEWARE BEFORE RENTING FROM MONTERO VIOLINS!I was recently strong-armed into purchasing an $1150 viola that my son outgrew, after an infuriating dispute with the owner, because of scratches to the varnish that are apparently not covered by rental insurance. While the viola did have many scratches on it, and did not look the way it did upon receiving it, the owner accused us of negligence and told me it looked as if my son took the screw of the bow and dug it into the varnish. I found this extremely offensive as my son plays in the select string ensemble of a locally renowned orchestra and has played at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He is a dedicated musician who would NEVER abuse an instrument in such a manner. The owner looked at the viola and told me that she estimates it would cost $1000 to refurbish it. I had spoken to her prior to returning the viola and told her I would like to take it to be refurbished elsewhere, and was told that I was not able to do so. Now, without the ability to get a second opinion, my choices were to pay $1000 to get this rented viola refurbished by them, or to buy it outright. I agreed to buy the viola (she did deduct the $175 I had already paid for renting for the past year, and gave me a discount because of the smaller size of the viola). However, after paying the remaining $820 to buy the viola, she was surprised that I wanted to take it with me! I argued that after paying that amount of money to buy it, of course I would be taking it with me! The aggravation that I experienced from this encounter, along with the attitude of the owner, has made me regret ever renting from Montero Violins. Because my son is in a larger size viola now, we have recently rented from another supplier and my son has expressed that the quality of sound of this instrument is superior to that of the viola from Montero. It has also been refreshing to be treated with MUCH more respect from the new rental company. Think twice before renting from Montero Violins!!!Response from Valerie (to owners response):From this unfortunate experience, I have learned that it is important for a reputable establishment to at least offer customers the opportunity to acquire a second opinion. Regardless of whether or not the repairs are done in-house only, a second opinion on damages and repairs offers customers a fair and level vantage point from which they can learn what to expect to pay. Your dictated estimate should not be the only one allowed to enter the picture. For example, I had shown the viola to two instructors (both professional musicians) at the center where my children take their private string lessons, and both instructors actually laughed aloud when I told them your repair quote. To be clear, my sons former viola teacher and I actually DID discuss the scratches, but she will attest to the fact that at NO POINT did she say that the scratches were so severe that the instrument would need to be completely refurbished. That claim was completely made by you alone. I remain unclear as to your surprise by my expectation to take the instrument with me, as well as your reluctance to part with the case, for which we had already paid $35. The fact that you didnt intend to include the bow just added insult to injury. Again, let me be clear: it was unfortunate that the scenario had to unfold the way it did. As I stated previously, I DID take ownership of the damage by purchasing the viola. It seems that we have two very contradictory definitions of how to treat customers with respect and in a professional manner. I wish you the best of luck with your business.

I called them because, my daughter started on the schools orchestra this year and practices on her own. She asked to learn more about finding an instrument with a nicer tone than the one her school one has her loaning. What an amazing shop! I called them a few days ago to see if they have ¾ violins in stock. The woman said yes they did and she would recommend making an appointment to look at and try on a few options. I said we aren’t ready to buy and I was afraid of wasting their time from another customer who may walk in with money to spend. She still suggested the appointment, this way the associate could focus on my child so she gets the attention she deserves. (Which I loved!)When we arrived at Montero Violins in Emmaus, the woman had five ¾ violins ready and waiting along with a new carbon fiber bow. The violins were all different prices, and she had them set in a row. They were all mixed up so you wouldn’t push your child to a less expensive model. I really liked that because with violins you need the right sound. The woman looked at my child and asked if she was ready, then she instructed her to pick one. My child played one by one. The woman gave my child ample time with each instrument. My daughter played each one, and used her ear to find the one that she found to be the best. In the end my daughter picked a Montecalvo, Model 100.The prices are very reasonable; they have a large inventory of many different styles and manufactures. They take Cash, Check, & Visa
