The ambience and hospitality was amazing! It’s an old house converted to restaurant ! We reserved ahead of time and avoided the wait.. highly recommended place for gathering. All the items we tried were amazing. The scallops were cooked really good and the desserts were out of the world!Highly recommend the pudding
Sergio went above and beyond for us during our first visit at Backstreet Cafe! His service was phenomenal and we were overall very satisfied with the environment found in the patio. Everything was exquisite, from the brunch specials of the day, to the drinks and desserts. The plating and flavors were top notch. Definitely recommend stopping by for some quality brunch if you haven’t already!
My first time here wasn’t that great. Well first I wish I would have gotten a table outside. We were sat upstairs next to a very loud table and I couldn’t even hear my husband half the time. The restaurant was extremely busy and my waiter was great but was slow since it was so busy. I almost tripped 3 times going up the small stairs. I wouldn’t recommend sitting up stairs if stairs are hard for you to climb. No elevator for handicapped guest. The food and drinks were great but again the upstairs seating was awful and constant walkway area from staff. We were brought the wrong salad and it was meant for the table behind us.Our meal with tip was $100+. Definitely over priced for the experience we had. Not in a rush to come back. I did want this place to be amazing since I heard such good reviews but I unfortunately was not sat in a desired location and it was so busy little details were missed for this type of pricy foods.
Delicious food. Great presentation (the plating is an art here). They also offer curbside and take out. I cant wait to go back and try some other items on the menu.
This restaurant is housed in a cosy two-story 1930s vintage house in River Oaks. Lets start with the fact that the restaurant never disappoints. There is a nice size back patio that has a small waterfall, misting fans in case it gets too hot, giving an effortless feel like you were at your mothers house having brunch on her patio. The menu boasts influences of Southern, Cajun, Creole, Hispanic and Asian. The orange chocolate brioche buns were served in a skillet warm to the table and were to die for. A definite must try. The food... phenomenal, the ambience... Eclectic, the vibe... Relaxed. I had the shrimp and grits and the portion was just perfect. The dishes flavorful, deserve to the table warm, an absolutely love The rustic look of the plate it was served on. I love the fact that it was just not too much or not too little just the right portion. It was my fiances birthday, he had the Pan Roasted chicken with Kale pesto, Goat Cheese, Arugula, Prosciutto, Crispy Basil and Balsamic Glaze.... Mouth watering....Overall a great experience, with food to tantilize your taste buds... Make sure you make a reservation to go here as it can get quite crowdy. Overall this restaurant is a win in my book.
Forgot it was daylight savings time switch but was not disappointed about being tired. Great atmosphere, visually stimulating plating, and well crafted cocktails. This is a must visit place if you are visiting or vacationing. Google says they have a vegetarian menu, that turned out to be false. But the charred cauliflower with creamed feta is something I can not put into words because it is purely an experience.
Drove by this place many times before finally stopping in. The parking is kinda tough but they do offer valet. The place has a New Orleans feel to me in the inside. Our server was good though and very attentive. Overall the food was very good, but the salad was not very substantial. Everything else was really good though, I’d definitely come again, but I would keep it as a more formal option.
Had an Excellent experience here for the wifes birthday! We sat at the bar where Luis was a superb bartender/waiter!! Who made our experience a great one. At the end of our lunch a gentleman named Efran stopped by and greeted me and even brought out a Birthday treat for the wife. Food and drinks were on point and the service was beyond amazing!! ** note to managment** Luis and Efran or both amazing employees who deserve recognition!!Thank you for an amazing lunch!!
H my..... DELISH.My friend and I wanted fried chicken and waffles. So we decided to try theirs out. NO REGRETS. Their chicken pieces though - HUGE. The waffle was a gingerbread with a delicious maple sauce. Mmmmm....Also had the fried green tomato salad to share. SO GOOD.The service was good.Prices - pricey but you are paying for what you get.A great place for brunch and definitely gets busy. We were lucky to be able to snag a table right away, but I imagine people arent always this lucky.Would love to come back!
Lovely food and lovely service. I ordered the seared scallops. They were good! Just a little disappointing that the serving was so small, three medium-small scallops in a cauliflower sauce with a single leek for $27 sounds a little overpriced. I asked where the scallops are from and the server informed me they’re from Canada which... then I understood I was paying for their flight. Also tried the mandarin flan, which was delicious but low on the mandarin flavor and a little too dense for a flan.Overall the experience was fine.
Wonderful evening here on a Sat night. Our party of 10 came to celebrate a birthday 🎂 for a dear friend. Nicholas was our server and made our evening very memorable. The suggested specials were excellent on point. We were seated out in the patio and had a splendid evening. Give them a try 😉
I always have a wonderful time at Backstreet Cafe, but I must say that tonight was exceptional! A beautiful night for patio, and I am always happy as a clam to see Raventos Brut Rose on their by the glass menu (it is such a beautiful sparkling wine 💕🍾) The octopus was absolutely INCREDIBLE- perfectly cooked (like, the most perfectly I’ve ever had); the dish itself was so flavorful and creative (yet traditional) that it made me so happy I cried a little 😅 Esmeralda was fantastic- she took wonderful care of us from beginning to end and even made my birthday dinner extra special with a little bite of chocolate cake! In fact the whole staff was so genuinely warm & positive vibes all around, it was such a pleasure to celebrate my birthday here this year!! 💕🎂🌟
This restaurant is well located. That may be the only positive Ive got to say for it. The service was slow and there were no vegetarian options on the menu. When we did settle on what we were ordering, it took a while to come out and it was bland and not worth the price.I definitely dont plan to eat here again.
Good food, friendly service. You cant be in a rush, its a slow down and enjoy your meal and company place.
Comfortable restaurant with great service and indoor or outdoor seating. Dishes change often. Scallops are my favorite, but shrimp and cheese grits are close behind. They always have vegan dishes, as well. Ive never been disappointed.
Snapper special was awesome. Great atmosphere on the patio. Good for a casual night out or a really nice dinner. Try the yellow rose cocktail.
Good service and restaurant was beautiful. Ate the prix-fixe menu for Houston’s restaurants week. The arancini was good but small, however the hot chicken sandwich was a bit disappointing. Overall, a decent experience, maybe I’ll try something else next time.
Small indoor dining with bar but more covered outdoor tables. The menu has food descriptions that are beyond my understanding. So if you want to impress with your culinary expertise, this is a place to consider. But, if you wand a ribeye, baked potato and mac and cheese with a beer look elsewhere.Service was average. Enchiladas I had were tasty but a lot of potatoes but meat was scarce if there was any. Self parking wasnt obvious so we used valet. I wasnt impressed!
My first time here and I really enjoyed the place. Service is very very nice, their cute terrace is very enjoyable in the evening and if it gets chill they light up the heaters.I ordered the different humus to share and the pecan chicken both completely delicious and sourdough bread is very good and they keep it coming! Moreover the toilets are very clean and have a changing tables for the babies. For the parking there is valet parking.
This place never disappoints! Call ahead for a reservation if you can. Otherwise you may wait 15 /20 minutes. Their chef specials are always delicious and never disappoint. The service is always 5 stars, and the atmosphere perfect.
Phenomenal food! The have quite an extensive vegetarian menu and every dish we tried was flavorful. We tried the Cauliflower and Shishito Peppers, Veggie enchiladas, and Black Pepper Tagliatelle. However, the Butterscotch Bread Pudding took the cake. It was HEAVENLY!Service was slightly on the slower side (may be because it was a busy Friday evening). However, food came out promptly after placing the order. Overall the service was very cordial and our server recommend some really good food & drinks. They have a very efficient and complimentary valet parking.Highly recommend making reservation in advance and request for outdoor seating (within the cafe and not the one facing the street).
The valet is complimentary so don’t waste your time driving around trying to find street parking. We order off the HRW brunch menu and everything came out fast and correct. If you going for brunch you have to order the Wild Berry Mimosa, it’s a requirement
Stopped n for lunch and enjoyed the top notch service. The fresh bread and butter was yummy w the lobster chowder...which was not overly thick like some recipes. I had the salmon and leaf salad which also had a stuffed avocado which was nice. I was a little surprised at how thin and smallish the salmon was...although flavorful it just wasn’t what I expected. The flatbread was great and the crab cakes were loaded w meat and not over breaded so overall a nice lunch. The upstairs and downstairs are both intimate and my favorite views were the tables over looking the patios. Valet is the best option and almost the only option.
The food was great I do want to start with that, I know servers have bad days like any other human. But we had the absolute worst service I have ever experienced. We called and reserved a table for ten, he was very dismissive of our whole party. We had to call him over multiple times for missing drinks, items, he would say he forgot to put it in. He even stopped our daughter ( whom we were celebrating her 11th birthday) while she was placing her order to tell her she needed to wait. She never received her drink ! The whole two hrs. Just all around bad service.
Great service, lovely patio, and good food! The shrimp and grits was delicious.
Ordered the Friday Date Night Takeout. Excellent meal with Peach Arugula Salad, vegetables including Brussel sprouts, mushrooms, cabbage, onions. A perfectly pan grilled pork chop & mushroom gravy. Dessert was cheese cake, choco syrup and strawberries. The touch less take-out was excellent and the notification system flawless. We will be going back when we can dine-in.
Sergio is the best waiter on the planet earth! Best service I’ve ever had at a restaurant! I’ve worked as a waiter before too. Food was amazing! Will be back soon. Thanks Sergio!!
My 5 friends and I went during Houston Restaurant Weeks for lunch. We werent that impressed with the food. We ordered summer watermelon gazpacho, iceberg wedge salad, grilled salmon tacos, wood-grilled Hugos burger, duck confit (pretty good), Chile shrimp, milk chocolate caramel creme brulee, sorbet, and butterscotch bread pudding.
Lovely place to get brunch. Loved the Oysters, Steak and Eggs, and Crab cakes.UPDATE: 2 years laterI decided to return to Backstreet Cafe and I loved it. Much better than my first time there. I had the Oxtail and Poached Eggs and an off-the-menu Snapper. Both were incredible. Highly, highly recommended. I now changed my review to 5 stars.
What a great place. Everytime we visit its better than the last. Everyone is so courteous and professional and the food ALWAYS in point. I recommend this place to all my friends, family and business associates
They turned a house into a restaurant and it’s great. It is casual, but also romantic because of the outdoor patio and the lights. This a great date place. While they are famous in Houston for their brunch, I come here for dinner and happy hour. Happy hour menu is awesome. The staff is super friendly and professional. I even had the steak here once, and it was perfectly cooked and tasty to my surprise. This place is kid-friendly as well. The clientele is local and upscale. Note: The brunch is a set menu.
Backstreet cafe is a Houston institution. We went there for the very popular weekend brunch. The courtyard is sufficiently shaded that it is pleasant year round except for the coldest days in winter or rain. The patio seating is dog friendly and the indoor seating is nice and intimate. A lot of gluten free and vegetarian options on the menu. A good wine list and good cocktails.
Always a great brunch spot. Make sure to request a table on the patio!
Another excellent experience at Backstreet Cafe!! Festive yet cozy vibe, amazing entrees, kind staff, and excellent service.
Backstreet cafe is so great, both me and my mom love coming here on a Saturday morning. The food is amazingly delicious and my mom loves that the tortillas are always cooked well done. (She’s very picky about her tortillas) The little pastries are perfect to hold you over until the food comes out.
Non-outrageous pricing for menu ($17 for the carbonara) and absolutely delicious. Brunch came with a gratis pastry that was a delicious little muffin made with zucchini bread and carrot cake like batter(?). Decent brewed coffee and lattes plus the servers will check up on you often even when it’s busy. If you want something that lives between brunch and fine dining this is the space.
Everytime I have been here the food and service are amazing! I recently came for their Houston Restaurant Week menus which were delicious. The peach cobbler was so good!!
Really disappointing dinner tonight. Duck spring rolls were too salty, pizza tasted like cardboard, cauliflower was nice and crisp but flavors were forgettable. Most disappointing - strawberry and rhubarb shortcake didn’t have ANY rhubarb!! And the chocolate cake with passion fruit caramel was just too sweet so you didn’t actually get to enjoy the chocolate and there was zero tartness from the passion fruit that it didn’t even feel like there was any.And I came just for the dessert! Very sad.
I came here for a group brunch event. The atmosphere was great and the food was delicious. I had the Wood-Grilled Hugos Burger without the fried egg (I dont eat eggs), Wild Berry Mimosa and the Blackberry Mojito. The drinks were everything. The waiters were nice and friendly which was an added pleasure and the chef even came out and greeted us.
Wild berry mimosas, muffin appetizers, and brisket hash were all delicious! Staff is friendly and helpful. Patio is pretty big. Valet parking is free. Highly recommend.
I absolutely loved the orange chocolate brioche buns. They were sweet, soft and chocolatey. The rest of the food was good but the buns were the star. Parking is valet, so keep that in mind. I would recommend going early if possible to avoid parking traffic.
Food was top notch, atmosphere was perfect for an outdoor dining.
Overview:Awesome place, its nice, clean, and cozy. Ive been here for brunch and dinner. Ive never had an issue with the wait staff and the food is good.Food:- Pecan Crusted Chicken - My favorite dish here so far. The spinach and sauce go well with the crispy chicken.
Excellent Brunch Menu! Part of HTOWN restaurant group (Hugo Ortega) this location has been serving up some of the best houston brunch for a few decades. Enjoy the outdoor patio area, the garden, or the dining room. Parking is limited so take advantage of the valet.
We always love our time here. The service is great, awesome wines, and delicious food!
Awesome food and drinks! Definitely a great brunch spot!
Loved it. Great food, time with my family, and the waiter was funny.
The food was delicious and the waiter was terrific. It was a special time for my little girl and I.
A lovely place to get brunch around town. Theres valet parking or street parking, but I would just do valet for a much easier option. Atmosphere is very classy and chill here. Low setting and it has an old school decors inside.Unfortunately, it was in the middle of summer so we did not sit outside where the fountain was. We opted for a seat inside. For the starters, theres complimentary treats and bread. Our waiter was very friendly and accommodating. The portion of the brunch was much bigger than I expected. I ordered the Backstreet Benedict. The entire plate had plenty of flavors. The Benedict came with cheddar chive biscuits, ham, grits, and assorted veggies. It was a perfect balance to the meal and the eggs were cooked just the way I like it. Overall, a great brunch place to check out whether youre here for a causal brunch or maybe something a bit more fancy.
I dont know... wasnt that great. Service was mediocre, which was surprising considering it wasnt too busy. But it was my birthday, and they brought me a cute plate with cake on it, so Im reluctant to say anything negative about the food (but it wasnt special, at all...).
We have been to Backstreet a couple of other times but we waited way too long, Covid or otherwise, to return. The ambience, food, bar and service are excellent and we felt fully safe. The table spacing was done well and the staff were all masked. Again, the food was outstanding and our server, Omar, was perfect. I cannot recommend Backstreet enough, particularly for special occasions. They also have a very nice patio but we did not prefer that last night due to the cold temps. Check them out. You will not be disappointed.
Great service! Excellent food! Id recommend the jalapeno fettuccine, it has a little heat but its soooooo good! Well be back!
Great atmosphere. Parking is mostly valet but they have a reader and its tip only. I had the jalapeño chicken pasta. It was good. My friend liked the enchiladas. It has a great outdoor eating area as well. Id return
Oh my God!De-damn-lious.The staff was amazing.1st time there but definitely not the last.
Sooo yummy! Def try the cauliflower chowder!
In general, bland pricey food. Mind you, they know their customer base well, and this is the bland food crowd. If you prefer to avoid spices, and enjoy a trendy atmosphere, this is your Cafe. On the other hand, if you crave delight in you food, Montrose and the Heights have several better choices.
This place was wonderful. We sat outside on the patio and the high wall and fountain make you forget you are in the middle of Houston. We arrived during happy hour and had hummus and lettuce steak wraps with a bottle of Rose Wine (half off). I thought it was a excellent price. We then shared an entree, which arent big, but enough to fill a normal person (I eat a lot) we ate a lot of bread with the pasta. I also had a mule, was very refreshing!
Came here for Restaurant week and the food was delicious! The complemintary muffins and the coconut creme pie are delicious - must have a great pastry/bakery team.
It was awesome! Servers took care of us. We are a bridal party!
Visited Backstreet Cafe for Houston Restaurant Weeks: food was great, service was prompt! There is a lovely outdoor patio area that would be great another, cooler time of the year.
A great mix of food options and a cozy dinner atmosphere.
Excellent menu choices, great pairing options, clean dining, valet parking
First date! Great place for food and servuce!!!😁
Not a great place for food allergies. They placed free (not ordered) muffins and scones on the table FULL of nuts. I had to grab them out of my kids hands! Plus the food was greasy (but tasty) and over priced for very small portions. However, lots of veggie options. Service was good. You also HAVE to valet so you have to wait for your car, even if you are in a time crunch. Nice atmosphere.
I came here to try the burger, however I ended up on the brunch menu. I personally had the migas whom was very high praised by the server, however fell short except for the crisp bacon. The indoor is quite cramped. Im glad I was able to sit outside which was nicely decorated. Please be aware that this place does not split checks, fortunately for us they were able accommodate it this time around.
Excellent service.
This place is amazing. I would highly recommend. Their flatbread is a great dish.
This place has an amazing porch atmosphere and great food. We came with a party of about 9 & had a really enjoyable time. The only thing that could be improved is having more attentive waiters. Will definitely be back!!
Great Service and Food, Only thing is Parking is Very tricky unless u Valet and i dont Trust Valet, too many Bad experiences.
Never a bad meal at Backstreet. I enjoyed the last dinner I had there with a friend from out of town. He was impressed and enjoyed his meal, as did I. The bloody mary was great! Thanks again for another great evening. Cheers!
Food is excellent. Good variety, and lots of vegetables. The roasted sea bass was incredibly well cooked and moist. Avocado tuna poke was also great. Nice wine list. The back patio is lovely - the fountain and shade makes a wonderful spot to eat even in the summer. Attentive service.
We really enjoyed this place. The ambiance was great; very relaxing. The mussels were delicious. We also got the lamb and duck for our main courses and they were worth the price. The only thing wrong with this place is the parking is a bit tricky...you have to park a block away or valet, but you do not HAVE to valet...if you dont mind walking you can find a space. If you are looking for a nice date spot, this is your place!
Booked For Mothers last week, called to confirm this morning and was told by the manager Morgan, that my reservation is for next week! My whole family is dressed up and ready for an amazing brunch, now we have nowhere to go. Morgan said he can do nothing for me. Thanks for ruining my familys Mothers day !
The duck was good but the short ribs tasted like pot roast. They made our anniversary dinner feel special, even brought us complimentary champagne and dessert. Thank you very much.
Wonderful meal with international friends! Regular menu AND vegetarian menu!
Came here for Houston Restaurant Week. They have several preset dinner menus with a good variety and everything was delicious and flavorful. Seems rare now to have quality HRW dinners for $35 price. Service was great. Valet parking or limited street parking.
I love this place. Excellent service and amazingly tasty food that looks very pretty. If that doesnt motivate you to check this place out, I dont know what can!
I like it, the food was good, I did not like the fact that the hostess gave us a time to eat . 45 minutes cant be a good date for brunch
Enjoyed Sunday brunch. The steak and eggs was great as was the Backstreet Benedict. Everything was delicious including the drinks and desserts. Make reservations to sit outside as it adds to the experience.
Waiter was courteous but slow. Maybe it was just because I didnt have a reservation? Portion sizes are tiny while cost is rather high. As an example, the $9 blueberry peach cobbler came in a 1/2 deep by 2 square dish: in other words, its shallow and small! I wouldnt mind that if the food tasted amazing, but it didnt, it only tasted ok. Disappointed. Will not be coming back.
