What a wonderful store. Everything you could ever need. All the employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. The store was very clean and organized. The staff seemed like they really enjoyed working there too. The service was second to none! Every employee from the yard guys to the managers will go out of there way to make sure you get what you need and have a wonderful shopping experience. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone around.

Hills Flat has everything that you need and then some! I went in, looking for materials to build a LEGO table for a local youth group. I brought in the build of materials and the staff was so helpful in guiding me to products that would perform even better than the spec. The table called for sawhorses and they suggested brackets that can be build into sawhorses with 2x4, so we could make the table height just right for the kids (24 height) so they wouldnt have to be on their tippy toes. Not only were they incredibly knowledgeable about the products they carry, but tailored their advice to my specific use case. The cherry on top was that they donated the wood, brackets and paint! After such a tough couple years with the pandemic, it was so nice to be supported by a community business to bring some joy and togetherness for these youngsters! Thank you, Hills Flat!

Really great hardware store to help with most things you would need like grills, project supplies, garden supplies, and anything to help clean up your yard. There’s also a lot of items to add to your yard like paint for a house or side building. Really great view from the hill and really like the mine cart front decoration. Would recommend.

Staff is super helpful and will work with you to get you a quote and material delivered. Unfortunately, that is where the good experience ends.Once I had my quote, I was advised prices are volatile right now, and I would need to purchase in 5-7 days to lock in the price. I was told it would be smart to purchase ASAP.I was a month out from the planned start construction date, and between the delivery date and that planned date, quite a few pressure treated boards warped in the same spot they were dropped during delivery.Pressure treated has a tendency to warp given how wet it is. In the past when purchasing from Home Depot, they always took back any warped boards as bad/unusable material.Hills Flat told me to pound sand. Over $1k in material I have to just throw away now.I will likely purchase some things from Hills Flat again, but it is unlikely I will ever purchase lumber from them given this policy. I would of course prefer to support local business over Home Depot, but not if it means eating thousands or having to delay start construction dates to ensure the material is used within a few days of delivery.

HILLS FLAT is my favorite local hardware store... the service is extraordinary and staff personable. The prices are a bit higher than Home Depot, but the good service and that they are local, makes up for it.

The Karens that work here will make you feel like a thief for even looking at the yeti mugs. Then the Karen that was at the checkout was so unfriendly I couldn’t believe that she works in customer service. Train your employees to be nice and stop making them feel like they’re going to steal something.

Largest area selection and although in most instances more expensive still competitively priced.These guys have it all; lumber yard, garden section, home appliances and paint. Plus they have all the blowers, mowers, loppers, choppers and whackers you need to keep that home and yard looking tip top!Huge selection of Carhartt gear and a sweet little section of mining gear next to another of fishing tackle and stuffs tops it nicely.The polite staff and easy in and out shopping experience keeps bringing me back. ALWAYS ample parking and never a long line or wait. The check out gals are always happy and helpful and will remember your account in most cases around the 3rd trip in.Thats service!

Well where do I start. I have had an account with these people since the parents owned it over on the corner by the gas station. I bought 3 Simpson strong tie post caps. And today they won’t take them back, if there worried about vivid, I took it into the store set it on the counter with no issue. But sorry no return YOU BOUGHT IT YOU GOT IT. I asked if I could exchange for lumber I needed answer sorry no returns or exchanges. I even had the receipt.BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BUY FROM HILLS FLAT LUMBER. They have lost another customer

They have a great variety of tools, lumber, rental equipment and garden supplies but their prices are way higher than any other hardware store in town. Prices for trailer rental were reasonable and it is nice that they give the option of renting hourly.Another thing is that they are normally open later than most other hardware stores... so at times they are the only option if you are in a real urgent need for something. Otherwise I would go elsewhere

Plenty of staff to give you the help that you need unlike some of the big stores it seemed like no one works at and I feel they have just as much of a selection so when youre needing something to fix up the house do a little painting little touching up. shop local and go to Grass Valley or Colfax for all your needs. Less stock than a Home Depot, but I found help quickly that could answer all my questions. A good variety of vinyl tubing was on hand to choose from. Checkout was quick too, despite a full parking lot.

Terrible service, the employees at the Grass Valley location should be replaced. Considering how much higher their prices are then every other lumbar store you would think that they would make up for that by hiring friendly knowledgeable staff. Not rude people who act like its such an inconvenience if you ask them one simple question. I usually support all local business when possible but I will NEVER go to this store again. Will drive up to Lowes or home Depot, while their prices are better for the same products, they are friendly as well. Hope this place goes under with its greedy owner

I can’t believe the attitude of Hills Flat Lumber rental center. I took two pieces of Stihl equipment in 3 months ago with chainsaw blades as well. No phone call back, just waiting until I finally went in to find out the issues. My sprayer was working fine for an hour and then clogged so I brought it in and am now being told it’s my fault and it will cost more to fix it then to replace it. About $300 new. The second one that has malfunctioned. Hills Flat management could care less. They also charged me almost the full price of my Kombi cultivator attachment that malfunctioned from normal use. I will never buy or have any more of my equipment repaired there and beg for more competition in our small town of Nevada City.

I have been shopping at Hills Flat Lumber for several years. Most recently I worked with Michael Kinzel on an order for the lumber, decking and hardware to build a free standing 12x12 deck. Michael was terrific, very helpful and professional. I appreciated his expertise and tolerance of my questions. I would highly recommend him and Hills Flat for any home improvement projects.

I always enjoy my experience here, but I just rented a string trimmer to clear over an acre of high weeds and went through the 3 lengths of line they gave me in about 30 feet. Got about an hour of use out of a 24 hour rental, hoping to somehow remedy that. Tried calling but just missed the store closing. Would love to turn this into a 5 star review... Rob took care of me, extended my rental to cover the lost time. Thanks Rob!

I work here so it sounds a bit biased but we are a very great company. We have a very friendly staff thats always willing to go the extra mile to make your visit wonderful. We sell a wide variety of tools and accessories. We have a great paint department that can match and make colors. We are a Carhartt supplier (and may I say definitely worth the investment. Extra thick and durable clothing). We sell scrubs for nurses as well? We have a large selection of lumber and composite decking. Definitely worth coming and taking a look around.

Hills flat is the go to place for lumber and building supplies. They always seem to have everything you need. Only 4 stars because sometimes their outside yard folks are not as helpful as you would like. Overall a great place to get your project needs.

I have shopped and had an account at Hills Flat Lumber for more than 15 years. Tried to get product availability on the phone and was left on hold twice for 7 minutes, back to back. Looks like the local lumber yard is going the way of the warehouse stores and letting their customer service drop.Actually the warehouse store has started a chat line to improve the customer service timeline, and they have moved into Auburn. It looks more cost effective now to make the extra trip to Auburn, since i would be half way there in the same time i was on hold with Hills Flat.

They are all so friendly and knowledgeable. They always have everything I need for any project. Soon I will be going through them to remodel my kitchen. Love being able to keep my money local.

Hills Flat in Grass Valley CA 95945 IS the Bomb Diggetty!! They have everything, including a deli for those on the go. They have a contractors desk, tool rentals &repairs, the staff is consistently wonderful, helpful and knowledgeable. This family owned local Hardware store caters to us locals to the extent of even carrying Hobie Cats for us River Rats and lake fanatics. No other store holds a candle to Hills Flat Lumber. They have another store in Colfa, CA also, right off Hwy 80 at Hwy 174. Both locations are convenient and great. Try it, youll love it!!

I try and support my local businesses even though their prices are a bit high. I have spent at least $20,000 dollars there and like the folks that work there. Recently I purchased 3 Timber Tech deck items for a total of over $600. No display in store as it was being rebuilt (even though they are the only local Timber Tech supplier) so had to order the items. I decided to change the color after I received the items and they charged me a 30% restocking fee (about $180). I complained and they reduced it to 25% (big deal). I am no longer a loyal customer. I have since ordered some items online at better prices and now stop at Home Depot in Auburn on occasion. I hope the $150 restocking fee was worth loosing thousands of dollars in sales.

I normally dislike shopping in Hills Flat due to their exorbitant prices. However today was the last straw. I went in to get a duplicate key for a 2002 Ford Explorer. They quoted me $125 for the key because it has a transponder chip. When I went online I discovered you can buy 2 blank transponder keys for $15 and have them cut for $2. The newest most expensive blank available at BnC is 50% less than what HF charges. Its horrid business practice relying on local citizens to be unable to shop elsewhere or too ignorant or trusting to fact check them, or just in too much of a hurry. There isnt enough competition in this area to keep HF honest. Disappointed and not shopping there ever again. Ill order online, go to Home depot in Auburn, or go to Ace BnC. No amount of friendly face justifies over $100 profit on a single item.

I called early to ask about a security screen door left a message and never heard back. So I drove in and asked. They didnt have any but I could order one. When I asked to see the options he showed me them. I found the one I wanted asked how much it would be but he couldnt give me a price because it wasnt in stock. So I just left. Very disappointed.
