Had an excellent time doing two guided shore dives with Trixi (Waiolena and Ice Ponds). Vibrant reefs, lots of fish, and many sea turtles. On the second dive, we were able to find one of the rare hawksbills sea turtles.I would highly recommend adding a second tank to your shore dives as the sites are very different. If doing the ice pond, be aware that water temp was around 65°F (first week of November) as it is a brackish area fed by a spring.

Terrific, friendly team - we thoroughly enjoyed our day scuba diving. Because it was a small group, we got to know everyone during the trip and the dive master, who was very personable and knowledgeable, went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable with the equipment. We mentioned wanting to see sea turtles, and we saw plenty. Highly recommended!

If you want a great experience, long-lasting memories, and first class diving then check out Hilo Ocean Adventures. The team took such great care of us. Captain Kimo is an expert navigator. The swells were large (for this mainland dude) but the crew did a great job getting us to the dive sites. Doug (dive guide) and Kelsey (dive master in training) were awesome. Doug knows so much about what’s under the surface and was very chill. The sea life was spectacular! We went through a small cave and met a very large turtle! We spread the ashes of a loved one today using Hilo Ocean Adventures. I could not recommend their services enough. Our guide Kimo was very professional and made the experience the best it could be.

My girlfriend and I booked a 2-tank dive on their boat for a trip earlier this week. I have almost 900 dives and consider myself pretty advanced (rescue, nitrox, full cave, etc.) and have dove quite a few corners of the world. This was my partners first dive after getting certified. We were concerned initially because of COVID that no boats were going out of Hilo, but calling their shop gave us confidence not only we could book the boat, but that required safety measures were in practice. Our experience with the staff both at their shop and on the boat met all my expectations and more. Their boat was well organized and more than spacious for the 3 paying passengers on our trip. I feel it would have been comfortable had it been filled with 6 divers. Snacks and sodas were provided during the surface interval. The reefs were healthy and a joy to see them flourish with fish and a wide variety of corals.The only two downsides (neither are IMO enough to dink even part of a star for this review):(1) the boats diesel engine exhausts out the transom, the same place divers gear up and jump off. If youre sensitive to exhaust fumes theres a chance you could get ill before diving in. Just be aware of this and breathe from your regulator the whole time youre gearing up.(2) No nitrox available at this facility (or anywhere in Hilo as far as I can tell). Our dives were max depth 60 and an average of 35 or so, not really nitrox territory but I like to have it on every dive when possible just so Im less tired the rest of the day.Hilo Ocean Adventures is a professionally run dive shop with all the bells and whistles divers of all skill levels will appreciate. I will not hesitate to try another of their trips next time I am in Hilo.

Went diving with the crew from HOA today and had an amazing time. Staff was very professional and knowledgeable. Saw beautiful reefs, lots of tropical fish, and tons of sea turtles! We went out to spread my dads ashes and Kimo took excellent care of us very respectful and reverent. Comfortable ride even though the water was choppy. Also we got to see some dolphins.

My husband and I are visiting Hilo for the first time. We went out for a two tank dive with Hilo Ocean adventures and had a blast! Staff was so kind and knowledgeable. They knew we are new certified drivers and catered the dive spots to our comfort level. Both the captain and tour guide (Chad) were extremely helpful with our gear and even patient and helpful when I struggled with some sea sickness. After our dive We had a couple pods of dolphins playing around our boat, so the captain let us hang a bit longer to watch and interact with them. Highly recommend this group.

The guides were great. Very warm and helpful. We saw lots of amazing fish, turtles and coral. But it didnt feel worth the price. They brought us to a public beach and we snorkeled from the beach. They provided equipment and information, but didnt feel worth $140.

I rented a stand-up paddleboard from Hilo Ocean Adventures. Its located right by Reeds Bay, so you can just walk the board over. Service was quick and attentive. They were super kind and even let me steal some of their staff sunscreen when I was fresh out. Cant speak to their other services, but if my experience is any indication, Im sure theyre great!

What an amazing experience to have while being on the island! Our guide Brooke was incredible and gave us great information about places to go and was a wonderful guide on our snorkeling adventure. We saw so many different types of beautiful fish and she answered any questions we had. Great for all levels of snorkelers from first timers to advanced. Thank you so much guys!!!!!

This review is for a boat tour purchased in June. First of all - scheduling was a nightmare. I was given an option of a historical tour (on the company’s bigger boat) with a couple pit stops for snorkeling. I happily agreed to this option. I then received multiple calls changing my reservation leading up to the actual tour: one call the night before to let me know they were going to charge extra because we were taking the bigger boat rather than their standard snorkeling boat, one call in the morning to tell me they were switching which boat I was on to the smaller snorkeling boat (what did I pay extra for??), and then another call >>30 minutes

Booked a scuba refresher course with them, which is typically just done in their pool. Was given the option to either do that, or do a short dive in the ocean. Went for that option, and got to see some neat wildlife (including a turtle!) and brush up on my rusty skills. Everyone, from at the shop, to my instructor, was very friendly and helpful and Id use their business again. Also, diving in Hilo seems to give a little bit of a different perspective from the very common dive/snorkel areas on the Kona side.

My son and I booked a snorkeling trip in Hilo, HI with Hilo Ocean Adventures. I was nervous before we started and told my guide, Ashley, that I have cancer and was not sure how much adventure I was up to for the day. She helped me with every aspect of snorkeling, which was beautiful and fun. She even helped me over the rocks to see the sea turtles sunning themselves, then took pictures for me and my son. Ashley is a marine biology student and answered our countless questions about sea life. If you get to Hilo be sure to check these folks out. It was the perfect way to spend the last day of our vacation.

My husband and I did the Wailoa River tour, which was fun and really laid back. We had never gone kayaking before, and we had no issues with it. We each got individual kayaks so we could explore independently, which was nice. It was a little shorter than we expected (only around an hour on the water and we really took our time paddling around) and we were hoping for a little more history and information as we kayaked along, but we still had a good time. We were the only ones on this tour, so it was a nice personalized experience. I think if we came back, we would just rent a kayak instead of doing a guided tour, but it was helpful to have someone there for our first time.

My family recently completed a 3 hr snorkeling and sea turtles viewing Hilo Ocean Adventures. The team at the office were very professional and safety oriented. Our guide was amazing! She was very patient, helpful....explaining to us newbies how to safely snorkel, had a great sense of humor, and was very knowledgeable about local culture, history and wildlife both marine and land. We got to see countless fish species, corals, urchins, and were lucky to see about 10 green sea turtles. We couldnt have had a better experience and so far this was easily the highlight of our trip!

We had fabulous time on the water. It was all that we had envisioned. The crew was great. They made us feel like family. It was a great way to celebrate a birthday. We would definitely book another trip on the future, possibly a fishing trip. Until then mahalo and aloha.

Rented a scuba tank the other day had a great talk with knowledgeable staff. Prices were great in fact in my opinion were to low I rented a scuba tank and it was $10 back home (Washington) it cost $9.50 to fill one. Will definitely be using this shop again.And to the staff; thank you for taking the time to make my trip better then it would have been without you.

Everything about the excursion was easy. It was easy to book, find and get to the snorkeling area. Our guides, Shavonne and Mikayla were so sweet and really made the trip. They brought us to two insanely beautiful beaches. The first we snorkeled at and saw a variety of fish and quite a few sea turtles. The second we just walked around but it was the most the most beautiful beach Ive probably ever seen. They were insanely patient and understanding of us who are newer to snorkeling. If we come back to Hilo we will absolutely use them again! Thanks so much for a great day!!

This may be one of those instances where Hilo Ocean Adventures will wish they didnt send so many emails asking for a review. Although I can appreciated a company who does this as that means they typically are probably rated pretty high.I booked the Intro Scuba Diving class for my wife and my daughter. I was super excited because it appeared that you would get two tanks and wouldnt have to be fully certified to experience scuba diving. I believe it was a 6 hour excursion.I had verified before hand that they would get the full scuba experience. I was then called about a week before the excursion and explained that they wouldnt be able to do the two tank dive and could only do the one tank dive which also would only include scuba diving from the beach vs. a boat. I specifically asked if they would get o still go deep in the water and she told me they can still go down to 60 ft. They did reduce the price down to the one tank dive price.After speaking with my wife and daughter hey stated that it was pretty underwhelming as they had already snorkeled that beach and didnt see anything that they couldnt see snorkeling. They also said they only went down 10-15 feet not sixty.I was pretty disappointed that it wasnt a true scuba diving experience and the last minute changes were a disappointment. If we would have known sooner we could have made other excursion appointments.They also called a couple days before the excursion and had to bump it up a day as they could no longer do Saturday for some reason.Overall we were disappointed in the value of the excursion.

Booked my 17-yr-old son the dolphin snorkel trip and he had a blast! Communed with dolphins and saw waterfalls and did jumps off the boat. I felt he was really taken care of with the excellent communication from the office. Easy location for him to find etc. Definitely recommend.

We had the pleasure of spending the day with Brooke as our guide. She went above and beyond in making us beginners feel comfortable with snorkeling. We were allowed as much or as little time as we wanted at each of 3 locations all very close together. Seeing the sea turtles was the highlight for me but the entire experience was well worth while. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. Our guide was knowledgeable, helpful, and even gave my son her fins when the strap kept failing on the stock ones provided. Her attention to our kids experience was greatly appreciated.

Four of my children had the opportunity to learn how to scuba dive. The waves were a little choppy and the water murky, but the experience was well planned and executed with the diving instructor. They were excited to see a turtle or 2, and learn the basics of scuba diving. A fun adventure.

Captain Kemo did everything he could to catch fish. Changed out lures, different trolling speeds and different location. No luck was on our side.Boat was pretty dated, no fish finding equipment visible. Price is on the higher end and the equipment doesn’t match up to the cost.

This was... an experience. Billed as Dolphin Adventure and Reef Raft snorkel it should been called insane boat ride, some dolphin and barely any snorkelingFirst, the boating experience. The boat was small, with only one real seat - the majority of us sat on the pontoons and were told to hold on to the straps for dear life. This was not an exaggeration. We also went straight at the incoming waves going full throttle. We went fast, but it was BUMPY and uncomfortable. So be warned of what the boat ride is actually like, since youll be like that for the next 3 hours.We barely snorkeled. For me, this was the most upsetting part. We stopped at 3 locations and snorkeled for about 5-10 minutes at each location. It felt like I just gotten in the water, looking at fished, then it was time to go. Disappointing.We did see dolphins, so that was cool. Was it worth that boat road? I havent decided yet.TL;DR - if youre just wanting to snorkel, save your back and rent gear and go to one of the public beaches. We saw more fish there anyway.

We had a great time snorkeling and seeing different aspects of Hilo Bay. My daughter has snorkeled a few times but this was her absolute favorite to date. The staff is knowledgeable, professional, and made us feel comfortable. If we had more time we would have contracted for another excursion; however, when we return we know who to call.

It was my first time snorkeling! with that came some challenges and learning curves haha. The guide was very friendly and helped me feel comfortable! Loved the views of the ocean on the underside. Pleased with my experience. I would recommend to anyone wanting an ocean adventure 😉

She showed us turtle cove, took us to her favorite place to hang out, super knowledgeable about the fish and the sealife we saw. All the gear was provided (even snacks!!). Definitely would recommend to everyone!

Rental was very convenient and easily accessible to water recreation area. Adding rubber skates on the standing paddleboards could help w/ foot traction although it worked fine without. We will rent from this company again next time!

We did an introductory dive with Doug and he was the greatest. He went through everything thoroughly and completely. He was patient and communicative and worked with us to make sure we were comfortable and able to move forward. We’re definitely looking to go back and get certified

Really enjoyed renting stand up paddleboards from Hilo Ocean Adventures. As first time paddlers, we were given and told everything we needed (including where to find calm waters to paddle in) to have a great experience.

Raimey was a wonderful guide. Her professionalism and friendliness contributed to a wonderful snorkel experience where we were given the opportunity to see the local ocean wildlife. Great afternoon activity. Felt comfortable in the water the whole time with her guidance despite not never snorkeling before.

This was a refresher diving course, which for me it’s been 5 years! This was the perfect amount of time and skills to jog my memory and make me feel comfortable going out on my upcoming dive trip! Highly recommend!

Had an amazing time on the snorkel and sea turtle excursion. Saw about 5-6 sea turtles, beautiful coral and we went to two different beaches. Guide was knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Well worth the money.

We did the stand up paddle board up the river excursion. We had a blast. Rayme was our guide and she was amazing. So kind and so helpful (my husband is a fish out of water when it comes to water). Rayme made him feel confident and comfortable. I highly recommend this adventure and this company!!

We used Hilo Ocean Adventures for the 3-hour SUP rentals and had a great time. There was a fairly significant wait when we arrived, but the woman on staff (I believe her name was Nicole) made sure to greet us and manage our expectations while we waited and took great care of us. We did not need a reservation for our rentals, but I would recommend making one if you have specific gear needs. They were out of some of the merchandise wed planned to purchase there and didnt find the best wet suit match for my niece, but we were able to make it work, and she had blast.We will absolutely rent from Hilo Ocean Adventures again--and cross our fingers theyve got boys rash guards back in stock :)

I went in on a random Friday and was able to rent a stand-up paddle board quickly and easily. I had ample time to use the board and it was a good price for the amount of time allotted.

We did the Coconut Island kayak tour. It was an amazing experience. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and patient and full of information for other points of interest. It was a very laid back experience, no rushing, she went at our pace and made sure we were enjoying ourselves.

Kimo and Trixie (not sure if I spelled either right) were super awesome and fun to go scuba diving with. Knew their stuff and really took care of us!

Had family visiting in town, so took them to try out SUP. Super friendly shop with nice layout. Fantastic price for rental and rental options. Not to mention the location is right by Reed’s Bay, so easy transport to a perfect spot to learn. Definitely recommend.

This kayaking trip was a disappointment. I paid so much to rent one kayak and a guide and the experience was not good. Horrible. First of all they didn’t even know how to load a kayak into a vehicle, then when we got to the water The guide didn’t know where to go. We went to an area that didn’t allow watercraft and had to turn around. Seemed like this was her first time as a guide. We were wondering aimlessly the whole time. There was another family booked on the same tour so there was a ton of people for one tour. My group of 6 as well as another family. Not what I had in mind and not a good experience. I would not recommend to a friend, and would not use them again.

My daughter and I loved it. Rainey was our guide and she was awesome. She made sure we were safe took us to some really beautiful reef, and was so patient with us. I highly recommend them.

Really Bummed...NO KIDS UNDER 8 ALLOWED ON BOATS... We were so excited to take our son on his first boat tour in hilo, we called in the AM and then they let us know at 7:30pm the day before and told they dont take kids under 8. Maybe just be aware for other familys with younger kids this may not be the best option - we are checking in with other private boats charter places and we have heard there is a good dive shop that might help us get our 3 year old on the water. fingers crossed!

We rented a double kayak for 3 hours and were happy with the service. Hilo Bay was a perfect place for SUP or kayaking. Even saw a turtle come up for air near our kayak. Happy to have this place when our hotel’s watercraft rental was closed due to Covid.

Its my first trip to Hawaii and my first time in the ocean. I did this cruise on my birthday and it was just me and the three of them and they made it so awesome!!! Heard the history, rode some of the waves, plus we got out and snorkeled a little. Had the tunes going too!! Ill never forget it 😎💜

Shavonne and her team did a great job. They took 6 of us (as young as 10) on the dolphin and snorkeling tour. The boat ride out to the dolphins was fun and once we found them, we all hopped in the warm water. Swimming with the dolphins was super cool, totally worth it. Then we boated over by Richardsons ocean park and snorkeled along the reef. Afterwards there were snacks and drinks, followed by another snorkel further along the coast. We were safe and had a great day. Thank you Hilo ocean adventures.

We did Intro Beach Scuba with Doug. From start to finish, our experience was AMAZING. It was my first time scuba diving and I was very nervous, but everyone at the shop made me feel comfortable and relaxed. They fit us for wetsuits and all of the gear so quickly. The in-class session was informative and I didn’t feel overloaded. Doug was so, so great and patient with our group of 4. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HILO OCEAN ADVENTURES! We will definitely be coming back to scuba and rent their other equipment (SUP, kayak, beach equipment).

We had a party of 5 for fishing and then a quick snorkel in Hilo. Kimo and Shavaughn (spelling may be off) were fantastic. Professional, knowledgeable and focused on our success and safety. Very highly recommend them. Thank you!The waves the boat and snorkelers traverse on this side of the island are high. Unless you know you are good, I recommend Dramamine prior to boating and a float while you snorkel.

I had a great 2-tank boat dive out of Hilo, The tour included divers and snorkelers. The leaders of both groups were friendly and professional. They also provided drinks and snacks. Topside, we saw some whales or dolphins in the distance who werent interested in seeing us. Underwater, we saw several turtles, an eel, a lobster, a weird skeleton-ghost fish thing, and lots and lots of pretty tropical fish.

The captain and his assistant were great! Was disappointed in the snorkeling though. Didnt see fish. Did see a huge turtle though. The captain did take us by some beautiful waterfalls that we wouldnt have seen otherwise. Guess we were used to snorkeling in the Caribbean and seeing lots of fish in super clear water and the Pacific is a lot different.

We rented three sets of snorkeling equipment from HOA. Given HOAs low rental rates, we feared getting cheap, beat-up equipment. To our immense satisfaction, every piece of equipment was high-quality and in like-new condition. We enjoyed a terrific snorkeling day because we had excellent equipment from HOA. The bonus of doing business with HOA is the friendly and knowledgeable staff. That characterization doesnt do them justice - they are delightful! They enthusiastically shared what they know, based on their own experiences, about opportunities for wonderful places to go and things to do on the Big Island. As luck would have it, we will be able to rent equipment from HOA many more times before we leave Hilo.

Scheduled a two tank dive with my good friend who is a first time diver. Really appreciated the warm and friendly training from Divemaster Doug. My friend was very nervous about diving but was made comfortable very quickly. We had great dives near Hilo and enjoyed the reefs and trenches. The abundant sea life was incredible and coming face to face with turtles was very memorable.

Our guide was Leah! She was the best! She was so professional and knowledgeable! She was very patient and so sweet! We will miss her ! 🌺

The tour guide and two assistants were Very nice and fun to be around! They made me feel accepted and valued even though I couldnt make myself get out of the boat to snorkel! They really could not have been more understanding wonderful! The driver was careful but a lot of fun too! I had a great time and plan to use their services again.

Stand up paddleboard lesson on Wailoa River. Our instructor was helpful and assisted us in paddle boarding for the first time, but not particularly knowledgeable about the river or the local surroundings. The river was peaceful and tranquil. Saw some fish (dead and alive) and there are supposed to be seahorses here too.

Took my 3 and 5 year old here for swim lessons. The place is inviting, staff Is very friendly, Covid precautions in place. My children absolutely loved learning here the instructors are amazing. I would definitely recommend this place for swimming lessons for your kids. Five stars for sure.

We did an afternoon snorkel tour with Cecily and she was an excellent guide. There was some confusion with instructions from the office but once we were at the beach, it was a very smooth experience.

Our guide Shavaughn was great and showed us a lot of stuff, great fun personality and knew tons. The turtles weren’t out sadly so the tour was a lot shorter than expected as a result. I’d jump on a boat tour if I had to do it over again.

I enjoyed my swimming classes at Hilo Ocean adventures. All of the instructors were very professional and helpful. Some special mentions: Kelee was fantastic at spotting problems with my technique and helping me correct them with each attempt. Shavonne and Kara were patient and encouraging and also helped me with my technique. Alexandria was positive and motivating. I always felt comfortable practising with her. Thanks to all the instructors, I enjoy the water a lot more and have begun the journey to being a good swimmer :)

I did my open water SCUBA certification here, did a boat dive, and my friends and I did the dolphin snorkel. Overall, Hilo Ocean Adventures has been truly amazing! Captain Keemo is fantastic and knows the waters really well, which led us to see some amazing animals :DIf youre in Hilo, you need to go snorkeling or scuba diving with Hilo Ocean Adventures, they were fantastic!

The crew was really amazing and so careful with us. We left with one other couple and it was soon apparent that one was not feeling well, so after one dive for me and one snorkel for my wife, we came back to drop off the other couple and then went back out to sea. The captain is very conscientious and knows everything about the area, and the dive master is such a cool guy. Super active and fun to be around with a good nature and a huge amount of knowledge about the area. The snorkel instructor is also great and made my very nervous wife feel perfectly at ease after a bad experience in Costa Rica. Her mind is completely changed about being out in the open sea and she really enjoyed herself. We had a great day with the crew and would recommend this experience to anybody visiting the Big Island.

We really liked the crew at the experience we had whale watching in Hilo! However, I do wish they had enforced wearing masks 😷 we had two separate parties on board and we were the only ones who tried to maintain distance and wear masks, which became impossible as the second group surrounded us not wearing theirs.

Very friendly staff. They gave many ideas on what to do & where to go. Also gave very important safety advice.

Rented 2 kayaks and had a lot of fun!The girl at the front desk is super helpful and kind. I’m so sorry that I didn’t note down your name 😭The car we rented is a 2 door dodge and securing 2 kayaks on top didn’t go that well. They offered free trolleys/wheels that go under one side of the kayaks so we can drag it and walk to the nearby park. It is a bit challenging as there is no sidewalk and the wheels kept collapsing and coming off. So if you have a bigger vehicle, stacking them on top/in the back would be better options. I would also recommend putting 4 wheels/2 trolleys under the kayaks if possible and securing them well connected to each other so they don’t collapse when turning or hitting a bump/rock.We had a small accident near coconut island and we had to call for help. The girl came and helped bring the kayaks back to the store. Thanks a ton!!!
