Beautiful, interesting, intriguing - less words more looking! Go see for yourself. Exhibits change regularly. Joined as a member 1st time there. Now we have rainy day plans all year. Possibly cold day ones as well... Enjoy, explore and be enlightened. Safe travels.
Nice museum to visit w different exhibits during the year. My favorite visit was around the year 2000 when they hosted a traveling Holocaust exhibit. The presentation was great.I visited recently again on July 4th and enjoyed it. It was odd that they had a surprising number of security staff and I noted a few times they instructed ppl to stay back from exhibits. It seemed odd and I noticed the visitors didn’t seem to be touching the exhibit or causing any disturbance. Maybe someone signed in as Nicholas Cage and they thought a theft may be occurring?? In all seriousness, the security seemed unwarranted. On Monday evenings in the summer, they host public concerts on the open lawn. Arrive an hour or more early to get a close seat under a tree. Bring a blanket, chairs, picnic basket or buy food from the mobile food vendors.Annual memberships aren’t too expensive and they offer free visit days, plus $5 after 5:00 days.
Probably on my list of top 3 museums I’ve ever been. I realize that north Alabama is quite different from south Alabama in the eyes of the people living there but to an outsider it’s quite the same just less action and more civil. Anyway to see a black woman artist have her own gallery about weave, wigs and barrettes, I know made the ancestors smile. That exhibit really moved me as a black woman. Then to see the YAM 2021 galleries where all of those kids were featured was amazing. So many of those kids have talent I can’t even imagine to have had at that age. I’d also really like to buy one of the pieces. The rest of the museum was also quite breathe taking. Very glad I got to go.The gift shop was down though and was only accepting cash so I couldn’t shop there.
Overall, a decent museum with a small, limited selection. Adequate for something youd find in a city this size. I tend to gravitate more towards neoclassical, baroque, and early impressionistic works. The museum had a limited quantity of impressionistic works and nothing of the former styles. There was a large section of the museum devoted to a Frida Kahlo exhibit but no actual works from the artist herself. Only artwork inspired from her. There was an interesting exhibit of artwork through time but again no original works, only prints and replicas. The only issues I had was with the museum operations itself. Huntsville had received a light dusting of snow throughout the night and so the museum did not open until Noon. I arrived at 10:00 a.m. as stated on the website only do discover that the doors were still locked. Figuring that this would probably be the case I came back around 11:30 and was greeted by a female staff employee who told me that due to the inclement weather the hours had changed that day. For my perspective it seemed to perplex her that I wasnt aware that they would be delayed due to severe weather.I was a first and only person inside the museum. I began to notice that the floor staff continued to keep it watchful eye on me wherever I went as if they thought I was trying to shoplift a painting from the likes of the Thomas Crown Affair. Several times I would walk around the corner and would catch floor security peeking around the corner and then playing it off when I noticed them. I even noticed one of the employees signaling to the other employees my location when I was reading an annotation about one of the artworks. If you are an art enthusiast it is worth seeing if you are in the immediate area. Im sure like every other art museum they rotate collections but if I lived in the immediate vicinity Im not sure it would warrant purchasing a yearly membership.
Other than the guards following you around, it wasnt bad. Had they offered to tell you about an exhibit or something about the museum that would have been nice. I thought that the paintings and silver sculptures were beautiful.
This is a beautiful museum; I definitely recommend it. They had mainly local artworks, but also a few widely known artists like Chihuly. The local artists had some absolutely breathtaking works here as well. Its not a huge museum, but its worth visiting for sure. The gift shop had some neat items, and it was definitely expensive, but thats expected because it is an art museum.
It was a beautify gallery with many types of art. It’s a great place to let the quiet take over and the piece speak for themselves. Would highly recommend in downtown Huntsville.
Nice museum for the town. Small selection but presented wonderfully. I wasnt thrilled with the exhibits but just my taste and am sure others may enjoy. The walk through time area for kids is a fantastic creative solution to get them engaged in learning! If you have an hour to kill this museum is a good place to stop. My only complaint is that the security guard kept following me... not sure why he felt I was a threat?
This was a wonderful little art museum. It has two Piccasos. I would recommend going here if you are in the area. The exhibit showing the lives of veterans after serving is so moving my boyfriend even teared up a bit. I cant wait to come back and see the different exhibits.
This first time experience was very peaceful. The most unique was the gallery of hair design. It most memorable was the great work from Michael Angelo and other ancient artists. It brought me back 50 years when I toured Europe. The most fascinating was the silver art gallery. Thank you for an enjoyable day.
I truly enjoyed this museum. The staff were pleasant and helpful. The gift shop was also nice.
We enjoyed the 9/11 exhibit as well as the Veterans in watercolor exhibit. Glad we decided to stop in.
If I could select 100 stars I would! We were beyond satisfied with not only the space of the venue, The Loretta Spencer Hall, but the staff! You guys are amazing. ESPECIALLY Ms. Jennifer Goff!! She stepped up and in on so many different levels and made sure our day was everything we could imagine. Even though our ceremony was in the park and not inside the staff STILL stepped in to make sure the transition of our guests was simple and easy! I recommend you guys for EVERY event! We look forward to seeing what we can come up with for our baby shower! Keep up the good work!!
Huntsville Museum of Art despite the tiny size it tries to cover the cultures around the globe. Great collection of artifacts from all over. The activities designed for young ones where they allow you to interact with the art.Must visit and there is discount in ticket if you are close to 5. I would recommend visiting on Thursday near to 5 the ticket is only $5.
My first tip is stop at the Huntsville Visitor Center and grab your 20% off coupon then make sure you visit this museum. The hand cut paper, tires, and metals were the big draw for me. They were absolutely stunning. There was plenty of street parking and terrific cafes nearby. The staff are friendly but the museum is a little warm inside so layer. No food or drink are allowed inside.
Me & my brother loved to enjoyed to tour around the museum to see all the good displays that has been put in for tourists.
Breathtaking exhibit Veterans by water-colorist Mary Whyte. A must-see exhibit. Staff was very friendly.
Good variety of works on display. Surprisingly good displays and GREAT focus subjects. I will return.
Really great time. Loved the special exhibits
Took a group of students. They really enjoyed the exhibits.
Although perhaps smaller than most city art museums, whats here packs a punch for cool artwork to view. Especially enjoyed the silver room.
Nice place to take a date 🤠
We recently moved to Huntsville and decided to check out the Museum of Art. We lucky enough to find a good parking nearby. We were able to take advantage of one of their many enereance discounts. My family enjoyed the art nouveau and I enjoyed the newly opened Vietnam War exhibit. We also enjoyed the interactive exhibit as well as the historical art exhibit. The museum has a gift store with many unique items.
Grate place to have a look at wonderful art.
Really enjoyed the art museum, the exhibits were interesting for children and parents alike. and we all found something cool in the gift shop.
Detailed art exhibits, a variety of styles offered, and a, great gift shop
The museum was nice and the lady giving the tour was very passionate about it.
Probably me, must be my lack of artistic eye. My impression - G Vanderbilt gets a lot of billing for what? And, pictures of rich people living lavish lives. I must be missing something 😕
We loved visiting this museum so much! This was a perfect mix for 2 kids under 6 and a single parent. I was really impressed with everything! Look forward to coming back to see more exhibits. On the weekends you can park in front of the museum for free! Beautiful area and neat gift shop. If you collect post cards like myself then they have some great picks there.
Absolutely love this place
I really nice and wonderful place. Staff is amazing
Several exhibits.1. Extensive works paying homage to Frida Kahlo, many mixed media, different approaches and perspectives.2. A small beautiful collection of blown glass pieces, including 2 by Chihuly.3. Jonathan Becker portraits, some a bit weird; e.g. famous men in skivvies getting dressed, and one very unsettling photo of an older man seated next to a young (maybe 14-yo?) girl in her underwear, stated to be his muse. As a woman, very distasteful (to me). But who am I to dictate what art is?? 😒4. Another extensive exhibit of works by Gloria Vanderbilt. Im not super impressed with her acrylic paintings, but I love her ink/watercolors. There is a looping movie with Anderson Cooper interviewing her about her life (I guess I am the only one who didnt know he is her son??) which was interesting but the volume was a little bit low (for a large room) and it was almost two hours long, so really not possible to watch the whole thing.5. A beautiful collection of incredibly detailed silver sculptures (animals, birds, marine) by Buccelatti; the silver is sculpted so intricately and finely, it looks like real fur, feathers, eyes...the flamingo is amazing. All in all, a very worthwhile afternoon.
Small but very well done.
Had lunch at Pan e Vino great Italian on the patio overlooking the pond gardens. Had great photography exhibits as well L some other types of art. Several touring exhibits only there for a short time so dont miss them. They are reciprocal art gallery from many around the nation.
Frieda Kahlo exhibit was beautiful and well done!
Pretty nice collection of art worth checking out!
The art could use more variety.
Very nice museum. They have a lot of unique exhibits and they rotate their featured exhibits fairly often so its worth coming back to. Great if youre in the area and either love art or just wanna get out of the heat for an hour or two.
A great art museum thats only getting better. Although I miss the grassy meadow that used to be where the museum is today, the building is beautiful and the museum did deserve its own building separate from the VBCC. Thanks to the improved space, the museum has been getting more and more impressive exhibits, including a recent one featuring pieces from the collection of the Uffizi.
Really enjoyed myself and the kids also enjoyed it also. Staff was EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND NICE.
A wonderful peaceful night. Much needed during these times.
Considering the relatively small population of the area supporting this museum, compared to one in a large city, and the founding of the museum as late as 1970, the Huntsville Museum of Art is impressive in its displays and achievements. It is not a large museum, but it does offer an eclectic collection of art, composed of a permanent collection, and external temporary collections, which frequently rotate to stimulate interest. Furthermore, it provides art classes to serve the local community’s desire to create art itself. The outsized support for the museum follows from the concentration of highly-educated professionals in a prosperous town whose economy is dominated by local high-tech industry, NASA and Army programs.
I saw four exhibits (Woodstock, Lunar orbiter photos, Vietnam war photos, and multi national art pieces). All were excellent. This is a great half-day event. Pofessional presentation of all art pieces. Very nice.
I cant decide whether this should get 3 or 4 stars. The museum was nice, staff in the gallery where knowledgeable and friendly. The exhibits were interesting, however, compared to other art museums Ive been to, the admission seemed steep for the size of the museum. Its on the small side. I expected more.
Lovely museum. Small, but tastefully done. Quiet and easy to go from one exhibit to another. Was disappointed at having to pay but also realize the arts have a hard time. Very nice, informative staff and a well stocked, tho small gift shop.
This museum has a variety of art that appeals to all areas. There is an interactive childrens area, permanent exhibits, and exhibits that change, so there is always something new to see. Check out the website or call for free activities. Once a month childrens art activities are offered for free. Also, the is usually a part of the museum open for free to visitors. Free parking is available next to the museum or metered parking on the street. The museum is also a beautiful place for weddings or other events. It is next to Big Spring Park, so you can make a day of it visiting the museum, picnicking in the park, enjoying fresh air, and feeding the ducks! In the winter there is outdoor ice skating at the museum, and in the summer there are free movies in the park.
We went with out three kids (3, 6, and 7). They have a nice series of childrens exhibits, and there is a great interactive section for kids as well. We all liked the glasswork and silver work. There was a large section of art from local children artists (K-12) that our kids enjoyed and seemed to appreciate more than the other galleries. The museum building itself is located next to a park with a large fish pond and walking paths that we also enjoyed.
The museum is relatively small, but has worth-while exhibits including a childrens activity area and a walk-through-time tunnel. It is also well-incorporated into a restaurant with live music directly adjacent to Big Spring park - makes for a nice evening date. Wine is available on Thursday nights for the 5$ after 5pm special admission.
Fun and informative. Sections seemed to be closed off but actually were not. The front desk was friendly and offered ample assistance
This museum is always nice to visit but this time, it was over the top. All 5 non permanent exhibits were wonderful and we enjoyed the permanent exhibits too. Now selling Suzy Pops in the gift store so when you are leaving into the hot air outside, you can have a refreshing treat.
Really nice museum with very interesting collections. I really.like how the galleries are laid out. Its a small.museum, more of a gallery but you could spend a whole morning or afternoon here. Its a great facility and I was really happy with the variety in the galleries.
Their oriental section was unsurprisingly their best in my opinion. I did not get to visit two of the rear galleries, but the experience was none the less enjoyable and served its purpose. The only thing was there was a woman staff member who kept staring at my S.O. who was on a mobility scooter. I can understand the worry for the artwork, though in truth unfounded, but I was a bit uncomfortable with it is all.
We really enjoyed our visit! Slow day which was perfect for us. Very relaxing! Nice variety. Beautiful view of the the pond and park from the back veranda.
The staff was friendly and helpful and the exhibits were stunning. Even as someone who had never gone to appreciate art, I enjoyed it immensely and couldnt recommend it any more if I had to!
Maxfield Parrish & Norman Rockwell and Wythe exhibits were very nice.
Took grandkids, 13 & 15. They enjoyed it and even kids area was interesting for me and them. Thursday is $5/pp from 5 to 8 pm. Diverse permanent art work and rotating traveling shows keep it fun year round Serene atmosphere and comfy seating makes it nice. Became a renewing mwmber
Check out the Sibylle Peretti exhibit, while you can!.. Over all, this museum is a fantastically operated museum. From the space, location and setting, to the static displays and the exhibits I saw. Staff went ouy of their way to make my visit better. The landscape around the museum is worth a stroll... Just go.
Art deco and illustrators exbits excellent. And hardly anyone there.
Great place to relax see some great art, grown your knowledge. Great for kids since has a kids section to bw able to touch and practice art. Also has plenty of family oriented activities and well for adults only nights. Superb place!!!
Neat place, friendly staff.
Amazing Museum for seeing local artists as well as the glass exhibit
Recently went here to see a childrens exhibit and was impressed by the building and the show. They charge for special exhibits but other parts of the place are free. Very clean and nice setting for a pleasant viewing of culture. Recommend a visit.
Definitely worth going. Check this place out!
Very nice, first time in art musuem, beautiful art works
I have an annual membership which is reasonable for unlimited access and special events. The museum has regular displays as well as new art provided throughout the year. It is a great atmosphere to learn and relax. They also have an area just for children. I highly recommend the Huntsville Museum.
Small museum, but pretty cool. They have kids activities on Saturday mornings, so thats a good time to bring children by and get them exposure to art.
They have a great variety of special or traveling exhibits. The staff is friendly and parking is really convenient. A little pricey for the size of the museum but definitely worth an annual visit.
Took kids on a field trip there from school. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. The exhibits were great! We had pizza from Pane Vino in the park afterwards...highly recommend it! Both places were great!
We were only visiting, and wbet to music in the park. It was very spacious and family friendly. Everyone seemed more prepared than us, with picnics and some little tables (definitely pros). Get there early if you want a good spot, but truth be told there isnt a bad spot in the whole area.
Its pretty good. The interest level of the traveling exhibits really just depends on what kind of art one is interested in. They had an exhibit of illustrator Donato Giancolas work a few years ago and that was amazing.
Its a great museum!
The Huntsville Museum of Art has some really unique exhibits that have no real analogue elsewhere. Its definitely worth a visit if youre in the area and have spare time. Student admission is $5 (their website is wrong) and is a great deal.
Very nice museum with lots of galleries for a city the size of Huntsville. Nothing pre-1800s in the collection though. Lots of changing and touring exhibits. Nice history section for kids. Beautiful collection of Italian silver animals. Pretty location. Classes, gift shop, restaurant attached.
Huntsville is growing by leaps and bounds and the HMA is keeping up!A crisp modern structure houses contemporary and antiquarian art. I attended the Orientalism Exhibit which inhabited three large gallery rooms. The works were on loan from a New York museum and it was such a gift to be able to see the premier visual documentarians of the Islamic life in the 1800s.There were other exhibits too but time wasnt on my side. I look forward to seeing more HMA exhibits in the future!
Really great size and scope of exhibit and a very friendly inviting feel. That makes you feel comfortable allows you to relax and enjoy the art.
We mostly patronize the Academy for art classes. My kids have enjoyed and learned a lot from attending classes at the museum. The offerings are varied, unique, and touch on multiple mediums. We just finished up Cartooning & Ceramics and both kids had great experiences. Weve also been pleased with the weeklong summer programs, and dont miss the museum gift shop! Great unique and some locally made gifts for all ages.
They always have the most interesting exhibits pass through. I love going and seeing what all they have.
Nice place, the tickets are priced fairly and they have a wide assortment of stuff.
Beautiful array of art. Great for photos, and a good photo op.
The art is not great but the staff is friendly and its a beautiful event venue. I love the little gift shop--lots of unique finds.
Loved the Alabama Constitution exhibit. I was also impressed with the Vietnam journalist photos.
That was a very cool surprise to find an outdoor live venue on a random Monday night! Loved it!
Love this place. Went to see Alabama Constitution and Vietnam displays. This place is a must see
