RUN AWAY, Howard Smart plays dirty.***EDIT: Dont be fooled by his good reviews, after I wrote mine he recruited people to write 5 star reviews. One guy is even named Carter Smart, what a joke! The proof is in my pictures***Id like to share my nightmare of a story to the public. This series of events spans 5 months as he ruined my savings account that I worked so hard for (college kid).I called him about a Craigslist ad that he wrote for a 2004 Silverado. a few days later I met him in a Hannaford parking lot for some reason, which I now know isnt even allowed. The truck was freshly painted and looked great. Upon driving it, it bucked and idled very rough. He assured me he would take care of it. I bought the truck and got his guarantee for the motor, transmission, and transfer case for 30 days. When I drove 2 hours to go to his shop, he charged me to change an O2 sensor! After gas I might as well have just done it myself. Not one month later, the paint began to peel off of the bed, fenders, and wheel wells. He told me he would take care of it and I drove all the way back to his shop. When he saw it he acted surprised and said it needed major bodywork. He said that he would do me a favor and split the cost with me. He would not admit that he had painted a rusty truck and glued on fender flares, but his mechanic Jake admitted it to me later on. Over the next week, he called me many times and claimed that he had found more supplies he had to buy, only to jack up the price. Another 2 weeks passed by and I drove all the way back to his shop to pick up my truck, and had to pay $1000. I believe he spent $200 to do the whole job.The bodywork lasted roughly 2 weeks and began to rust from the inside out. This is because he had simply sealed over the rust and repainted. The paint also matched very poorly, Hellen Keller could have matched it better. I complained to him and he said he would re-do it.I drove 2 hours back to his shop, and dropped the truck off. He welded in new quarter panels, which suggests that he had performed an incomplete repair previously. I was without my truck for another 2-3 weeks. This time the bodywork lasted about 1 week. He had his mechanic tack the new quarters in every 3 inches, and moisture almost instantly ate through the holes that were merely sealed with bondo. I complained and he said that even though it doesnt seem scientifically possible, it happened because there was moisture in the metal! Needless to say, this guy is a true scammer that will feed you excuses in hopes that you dont know better. I told him that no the metal wasnt moist, he needed to weld the quarters completely to form a seal, and he agreed to. I drove the truck all the way back to his shop and got a ride back to Umaine. When I returned to get my truck back multiple weeks later, my truck was not at the shop because Jake had taken it for a drive. When he returned, it was muddy, just in a way that conveniently hid the bodywork! Upon washing the truck I found that the bodywork was a disaster. There was even a sharp glob of bondo on the bed that had just been painted right over. I complained to the attorney general and DMV investigations bureau.Detective Buchanan from the DMV told me she wished that I had called earlier, and that she had dealt with Howard before. I drove back and forth to his shop so many times that I had put on more than 3000 miles, and therefore couldnt take legal revenge or get a refund. The attorney generals office convinced him to have another body shop do the repair.Howard had his cousin do the work. The work was already bubbling when I picked it up, and his cousin told me to sell it ASAP. Truly pathetic people.I had $9500 into the truck after this nonsense, and after being a motivated seller gave it away for $5700. I was honest about the rust because I have a soul.Do not hand this man more than $2000. He specializes in flipping old clunker Subarus so he thinks covering up rust is ok.

I just wanted to tell about my experience at this dealership. I had been searching for a truck for 6 months. I had viewed a lot of trucks. I gave them a deposit to find me one. It took them 3 weeks. I have been happy with the purchase. It had a few bugs that needed attention. They did take very good care of meThe truck wasnt exactly the right color I had hoped for but I am very pleased with the purchase and will be returning in the future.

If I could write a review for no stars I most certainly would. To begin, we found this gentleman and his establishment online. He insisted on us driving to a shopping mart parking lot in the middle of Augusta in order to view the vehicle we were interested in. He has a toddler in the back of the vehicle we were looking at. I assume he took advantage of the fact that we were at the time, young buyers. This car was not listed as a wholesale. He failed to mention the major transmission issues, the sever rust he had temporarily covered with rhino-line and the tires were completely bald. To be fair, we as buyers should have been able to recognize subtle signs. Three days after the 30-day warranty, the transmission failed. He refused to work with us unless we could haul the vehicle from northern Maine to Augusta, where he would decide to possibly help us in the situation. Honestly, an extremely poor first experience. Unless you are an experienced buyer, who knows all the small things to look for, I would highly recommend avoiding this establishment..

Disgusted with this place and the shady business theyre up to. I bought a Subaru here in January of 2017. They couldnt possibly put a little bit of gas in it- so I went straight to the pump only to find my car reeked of gas when I pulled away. I contacted Mainely motors immediately about the issue, and we arranged to bring my car back (an hour and a half hour drive for me from my home.) He reported that there was an issue with the gas tank - and I requested that he spray the bottom with an undercoating as well as fix the gas tank issue. I came back two days later when they said it was fixed. My car still reeked of gas when I tried to fill up. I got a second opinion. Turns out they sold me my car with a rotted out gas tank......And brand new inspection sticker......???? Undercoating? Yeah right. They did absolutely nothing after I did three hours of driving to get it fixed. Fast forward to November and Im having some major issues with how the car is running. Check engine light?? Doesnt even work. Likely disconnected. Shame on you, Mainly motors!!!!!

Howard Smart, the owner of Mainely Motors is incredibly dishonest and I would never have business dealings with him.We found a Subaru on Craigslist going for $3000. I could tell it was from a dealer (mention of a 14-day plate) so when I talked with Howard on the phone, I said I would rather meet him at his dealership, rather than the Augusta Hannaford parking lot like he suggested.Things seemed really off as soon as we got there. He was nervous and awkward, didnt introduce himself and was really passive-aggressive when we found things that were off, like a coolant tank that had no fluid in it (Dont you know anything about engines? or a rear hatch handle that didnt work properly (Dont you know anything about Subarus? They all do this). The car had some clunking issues (bad struts) so he offered to include fixing them, along with the non-functioning back wiper, in the selling price. We made the purchase and agreed to bring the car back the next week to have the issues worked out. As we drove the car home, the Check Engine light came on, which is mighty mysterious for a just-bought car with nothing wrong with it. Translation: Howard used a OBD-II reader to erase the codes. When we arrived on time for our appointment on Monday morning, Howard and his helper were scrambling to power-wash a cars engine bay (hmmm.... washing off oil leaks?) that they were about to sell. Howard told us that one of his employees was sick and he wouldnt be able to help us until much later that day. We had driven 2 hours to get there, but decided to kill some time and give him a chance to hold up his side of the deal. When we finally got back, Howard made us stand in the cold while he checked the car out. He miraculously couldnt find anything wrong with it and told us that the electrical issue in the back wiper was a Shaun thing that wed have to come back for later. We brought our clunking car home, crestfallen. We had spent an entire day trying to get Mainely Motors to hold up their side of the review, and they had totally skipped out. We checked our oil and it didnt even register on the dipstick after a few hundred miles. Pretty odd considering the car had supposedly just had the head gasket and timing belt replaced.Problems with the car mounted:-We got some wet weather and suddenly the ABS system went haywire and our dash lit up like a Christmas tree.-The climate control only blows hot. OK in the wintertime. Really miserable in the summer.-Then, just 5 days before Christmas, we were merging onto the interstate and our new timing belt blew. We were lucky to not get creamed by a semi and got a tow to a garage, and we called Howard- this car supposedly had a 90 day powertrain warranty. Howard didnt remember selling the car, didnt remember including a warranty, and then told us You have the car towed 150 miles and pay for the parts. Scumbag. We spent a month in the middle of the winter with no good transportation saving up the thousands of dollars it took to get 2 new cylinder heads installed on our car- the ones we had were all scored inside, as if the car had been run critically low on oil for a long time. Finally, after we got the car back, we needed to get:-2 new front struts (we still need rear struts- they were all bad!).-All new front brakes (the front rotors were about to disintegrate).-The rear subframe is has a lot of rust and will need to be replaced.By the way, Howard has one of his employees do all the state inspections on the cars he sells. Our inspection sticker says Shaun.Howard Smart is a scumbag who flips clunker cars, lies about them, and makes promises he has no intention to keep. You might notice all the 5-star reviews for his business on here from people all over the world, including many people whose other reviews are for businesses all over the world, do not speak good English or make reference to services that car dealerships dont sell. Its very likely that Mainely Motors paid a service to get fake reviews on his business.Stay away from Mainely Motors. Youll thank me.

My son was sold a junk 06 Ford Escape. Nothing but drivetrain problems. Every time they fixed something, 2 days later same problem or new one. Within the first 3000 miles we put over $2000 more into it. It will not pass inspection even though they put a new sticker on it. They need to stop getting vehicles from junkyards and then selling them as a working vehicle. Huge mistake buying here.

Bought a 2002 Subaru Outback and was told there were no major issues. Within 2 weeks the brakes completely failed and that is when I found out the emergency brake wasn’t functional either. After 6 months the car started falling apart and became unfixable. This is a very shady dealership. I would not recommend dealing with them.

DO NOT Buy vehicles from this guy! I bought a 03 Chevy Silverado from this con artist! I met him at the Hannaford parking lot to look at a truck that he had but decided not to buy that one. Weird we meet At Hannaford and I don’t remember why.....like the other review says. I told him what I was looking for and he found 03 chevy Z71. I went to his shop and looked the truck over. It had a lot of rust and he said he would grind it all off and undercoat it for me, if I would pay half for the undercoating. Also had some rust on the fenders that he said “oh, I will sand that right down and paint it for you.” I put a deposit on the truck and purchased it like one week later. Had the truck maybe 8months.....junk! He sprayed over the underbody with a bunch of black rino and didn’t clean or “grind” any rust or dirt off. All the black grime/rino coating fell off the underside and was completing rusty! He spray painted the fenders with paint that didn’t match and do not repair the rust. I think he may have changed out the instrument panel/odometer. I noticed a few instrument panels in his office on the floor. That’s odd! He told me the truck did not come from an auction but I did so research and it did! He is DISHONEST and CROOKED!
