In its original condition, the black lacquered top and doors were extremely scratched up and I was really concerned about getting it refinished. My 75 year old father tasked me with figuring out how to make his 60+ year old rosewood eames lounge chair like new without completely breaking the bank. I contacted 5 different places across the country and sent pictures of the splitting seat and ottoman cushions asking for suggestions. We wanted to do right by the chair, which is a loved heirloom, so we were hesitant at first by Hume, because it seemed like going with their cushions required a leap of faith that the new leather would match the patina of the intact leather enough to not look weird. Alfie assured us that their cushions are as true to the original intentions and should be perfect for swapping right in.We ultimately decided to go with Hume who was originally recommended to us by a trusted mid century dealer, and because their prices delivered for what we needed were about 15-20% less than other restorers we were speaking with. As you can see, the cushions looks great and we are so happy we made the leap of faith. The leather is buttery soft, and has an almost identical finish. I recommend their products.

We inherited a beautiful rosewood mid-century modern chair and ottoman, but the cushions needed replacing. We have a pretty decent upholstery shop here in our town, but I knew we needed to have the best craftsman for this job. After doing a bit of research, and a few interviews, we chose Hume Modern. I sent a 1970s Falcon chair to humemodern for restoration. The chair has a multi-panel canvas sling that needed to be recrafted and I couldn’t find anyone interested in doing the work here at home. Humemodern did a fantastic job; the chair looks super and feels better to sit in than ever before. Humemodern really saved this chair and their prices are reasonable and fair.

I was in the process to get estimate on a repair of 7 Herman Miller - 1973 Eames Chairs. Sent photos, I got a very fast response with a very detailed estimate to replace all upholstery on chairs. My idea is to keep the original upholstery and just try to fix/replace the látex foam rubber in the interior of the chairs. I just asked if would be possible to do so. And I received an email with a “Kidding right?” as a sarcastic and unprofessional response.So as a customer is not possible to ask questions and try to get what customers are looking for it.Why is so absurd to them to keep my chairs original as much as possible?Anyways.Good luck with your estimates and responses. That if you accept all what they want to do to your items you will be perfectly fine.

My wife found these two Saarinen tulip arm chairs in a little old-stuff shop that went out of business about a year later. I kid her that its because she got them for a steal.Of course they didnt look like this. I dismantled them completely, sand blasted the bases and had them powder coated in the original white. I took the shells to my friend Dan at International Auto collision in Culver City and had him prep/prime/paint/clear coat to match the powder coated bases. (I knew Dan could match anything so I started with the powder coat as I wasnt so confident in that shops ability.)For 5 or so years after all that we continued to use the ugly cushions that the previous owners had made. Finally I decided to get real cushions.I took the old ones to Alfie who immediately told me to stick the old ones and instead give him actual measurements from each of the chairs. Based on those measurements and his encyclopedic knowledge of this stuff HumeModern made two perfect-fit cushions which I believe to be better than the original OEM cushions. We love them.Highly recommend HumeModern for any modern furniture remanufacturing.

Over the years, Ive had Hume repair Eames plywood chairs that had holes drilled in them, and the holes magically disappeared. It was like witchcraft! They rebuilt a Nelson Sling Sofa, and most recently, got a full upholstery set for an Eames lounge chair and ottoman. The work is absolutely first rate. Recently I completed a repair of an Eames 670 chair in which all 4 shock mounts needed to be replaced. After a lot of research, I determined the parts most suitable for the repair were those from Hume Modern. The shock mounts and adhesive I received were as advertised. Ive had two sets of furniture repaired at Hume Modern. Each posed distinct problems--one required an unconventional repair of an existing wood frame, another a tricky combination of replacement and repair of metal and fabric. In both cases, the end result was faultless. Hume provides an attention to detail, function, and form that Ive not found elsewhere. I found a rosewood Eames lounge and ottoman literally in the gutter on garbage day. The leather was ripped, the wood sun faded, shock mounts had failed, and were repaired with bolts. Hume quickly restored the chair, and it is stunningly beautiful!

For example, the Egg Chair was restored with a single piece of leather for the back—often knock offs will have a seam down the back. I’m really impressed. In 2013 Hume repaired a broken back support on my 1978 rosewood Eames Lounge Chair; the repair is barely visible. In 2016 Hume replaced all of the leather and the chair is like new. I cannot say enough good things about the care and craftsmanship of this company. They are simply the best for restoration of classic mid-twentieth century furniture.

Hume Modern did a great job restoring my Richard Schultz chairs. They are not cheap, but the quality is worth it. Very detail oriented too. Information flow and follow thru is top notch.

Alfie and company not only beautifully (and quickly!) restored my ancient (and very grubby) Herman Miller shell, but they also managed to find me a flawless vintage Eiffel Tower base to go with it. I have a 1977 rosewood Eames lounge chair that had the shock mounts incorrectly repaired in 1990 by the company which originally made the chair. I finally decided to refurbish the chair and sent the seat pan and lumbar support to HumeModern. They replace all the shock mounts perfectly. I then replaced all the leather and refinished the wood. It looks almost new and feels as good as new, in large part thanks to the fine work of Alfie at HumeModern. I strongly recommend Alfies work.

Alfie did a wonderful restoration for our familys original Eames chair and ottoman. The wood was waxed and all the natural hues restored. The leather and cushions were all replaced in expert fashion. We couldnt be happier with the finished pieces!

Great service, took in a chair with a (completely) broken arm. He fixed it in under 5 minutes and gave it a full check up/tune up while it was on the operating table. Fast, friendly and INCREDIBLY reasonably priced... doesnt get much better than that.Im not saying I would break my chair again just so I can go back... but Ill be back the next time Im in need of quality furniture service.
