If you get a chance to go in, its great. Just about everything for any process you can imagine under one roof. As a local, I used to love coming in to Freestyle on Saturdays, the only day I was able to with their hours. Now that theyve decided to stay closed on Saturdays Im forced to order product online. Its now actually cheaper to buy product from other retailers in NY state and have it shipped all the way to CA. Shame. I loved supporting them.Edit: I look forward to patronizing them again now that theyre open the last Saturday of every month. Its not a perfect solution for us locals who work regular hours but I appreciate the gesture.
Very helpful staff, thank you Brian and Finn! Huge selection of film 35/120mm. Nice shop clean and accessible.
Freestyle knows what’s up in the film world! Filled with all your photo needs from film and paper to development equipment and backdrops. Plus their staff are highly knowledgeable and super down to help you out. We spoke with Josh about a Rollei color chem kit, and he offered some amazing advice about how to use the kit.The reason we came in was because the kit we purchased online didn’t come with the correct chemicals. Freestyle was super helpful in exchanging our product for the right one from the manufacturers and it made our whole experience feel like they really cared. My husband develops film for customers and he found out last minute that the kit wasn’t right. Freestyle came through! Thank you for all your help!Their store is fully stocked, plenty of free parking out front for customers and it’s a safe shopping experience during this pandemic.
Went in on (Friday, the 28 of May) and the 2 guys working were really helpful.Knew what was in stock, what wasnt, and whether it could or couldnt be ordered at the time (Adox paper). One of the few stores that i try to stop at even if its out of the way in LA (coming from Vegas). They also had a suggestion on some botanical gardens, etc.Just wanted to give the 2 guys a shout-out for being attentive and having a great attitude. Thanks! As for the place itself, it was clean, well maintained, and they had samples of paper and how it prints on the wall!!! Which is amazingly helpful, not to mention that the photos themselves were great to look at as well.Maybe suggest that you add to the collection of prints, donated by photographers, maybe kept in a workbook (as wall space is limited), or in a portfolio of sorts, to give more options of paper/film combinations.Anyway, great store and will gladly support.
Cool store. Smaller than my dad claims back in the day. Helpful staff
Very knowledgable of cameras and film. Friendly staff
Best prices for all my film needs and the staff is super helpful and knowledgeable :)
Great place, with countless varieties. The staff was nice and welcoming. Prices are cheaper than anyone else, especially from Sammy’s store in Pasadena. I bought a pack of 100 photographic papers HP5 for $78 ($83 original price) with student discount, where the same thing at Sammy’s was at $99! Definitely shopping here again.
Went here with my dad when it was on Western Ave..it was funky, floor to ceiling with product mostly black and white paper for making prints. Times.and technology constantly changing and Freestyle has changed with.the times. Its a good place to.shop. They dont carry everything but they have what you need.
Havent been here in years but the stock is still great and the staff friendly.
This place is solid 5 stars! If you need film, photo paper, darkroom chemicals or a little photographic inspiration, please visit. Not that many brick and mortar stores are left, this is one of the few, so please treasure them. I enjoy visiting this place, try to make it here at least once a month. Another plus is the kind and friendly service the staff provides .
Good selection of photography gear, the staff was pretty nice too. Felt pretty corporate though, wish there were more options for film photographers in the area.
I came here yesterday around 2ish all the way from Chino CA to simply get some film. I wanted to get a couple of rolls of Tmax 400 in 35mm and a 5 pack of Tmax 400 in 120.I immediately get in line near the film counter and have 1 person ahead of me. Since I am permanently handicapped from a vehicular accident I cant stand long or walk much. After waiting 5-6 minutes and seeing the person ahead of me had not been helped yet; I decided to grab 2 rolls of cheap 35mm film that was not behind the counter. I proceeded to the front of the store to checkout. There are 2 cashiers, one is helping a customer and 1 was ready for me. No one else was in line in ahead of me or after me.A young man I believe his name to be Raymond was my Cashier. I told him I was not able to get a 5 pack of Tmax 400 in 120 because the line never moved. I asked him if he could get it for me. He told me if I wanted film I needed to get back in that line. This was not cool. No one else was in back of me and it would have taken him 15 seconds to grab me the film I wanted. The company also lost out on a little bit of extra money. I am not sure if this was the companies policy or the Cashier just didnt care to help me. Either way it sucked! I drove for an hour to get there and got treated not so well.Needless to say, I will just buy my film online from somewhere in the future. Other places are cheaper and I already knew that but I just wanted the film now. However, I didnt get my film and wasted gas money. :(
Shout out to Eric in the technical department, who helped me thoroughly, getting quality prints on my newly purchased Ink jet printer.
The best of the best for your photo needs
I ordered some developer and a few rolls of film. The film was fresh and everything was delivered quickly. I will definitely order from these folks again. The prices are right, and service is spectacular.
This place is great! The staff is very knowledgeable on film photography. They have a great selection of film!
Josh was awesome! Helped me quickly find what i needed and checked me out. Definately wish i started going here sooner
Ordered online here but forgot an item. Customer service was incredibly helpful and polite. Definitely will buy from again!
Clean shop with very knowledgeable, friendly staff. They even welcome dogs, insisting you not leave them in the car!
This place had everything I was looking for. Film, paper, chemicals and the random accessories I needed to get my home darkroom going. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful. Ill probably order from them online in the future, but it was worth the drive from Ventura to check out the brick and mortar store.
Staff was friendly and found supplies needed
Cool 😎.
Love it here! Super helpful staff and they always have what I need
First time visiting here, left work and made the drive over. Parking was easy to find. Easier if youre going eastbound on Sunset. First impressions were great, lots to see but everything was kept well organized. Raymond behind the film counter helped mr out and was incredibly helpful. He made some 120 film recommendations based on which film would be best for the settings Ill be shooting the pictures in. We talked about getting a camera repair and recommended me to a repair shop that also does developing.Helpful staff and the parking lot bonus makes this place the ideal place to get your film supplies.
Best place to pick up film, almost always stocked up and the prices are great. just wish it wasn’t so quiet in there lol
Always a great place to shop for your photography & printing needsgreat prices friendly staff.
If you get paper or printing or photography supplies anywhere this is the place.Eric will do printing psychotherapy session with you and change the way you look at art and prints forever!
This place is a gem. I’m a high school photography teacher who still includes darkroom photography in my curriculum. I’m positive I would not be able to do this if freestyle didn’t exist. They have all the stuff (at good prices). In addition they have great resources for digital photography as well as historical processes. Staff are awesome. I love Freestyle!
Great paper selection. Staff is totally cool. Other customers are interesting. Good parking right out front for free. They had what I needed in stock, which has never happened before in a brick and mortar store. Worth the trip.
One of the best photography stores in the country.
I can find everything I need!
Great selection. Friendly staff. Fine prices. Just a really pleasant place to pick up some gear in a hurry.
I get everything done here. Classy clean and modern. Knowledgeable staff. Services keep expanding and new frame collection is top notch. Ive yet to master file transfer but Im sure its just me.
I remember going here often back in the 70s and 80s. Surprised its still open. Bought my first Beseler enlarger here. Used to get paper and chemicals here too.
Great selection. Friendly staff. Fine prices. Just a really pleasant place to pick up some gear in a hurry.
Photography is my hobby. This place is Disneyland for folks like me.
Went here for passport photos for some visas. The man that helped me was very nice and processed my photos quickly. It was definitely conveient and fast but I thought it was a bit expensive. Freestyle Photographic Supplies passport photos. I would recommend b/c its a local store, service is friendly and fast.
Always friendly, always helpful, lots of stock. Highly recommended.
Great! I love small businesses because the owners tend to be very personable. I had that experience at the Photo Center to get a new passport photo taken. The owner was fast, friendly and even suggested I fill out my passport application online so that there wouldnt be any issues in processing it and gave me a slip of paper telling me the website to go to
Wonderful! I can recommend this shop. The staff is so kind!
A quick and easy spot to get passport photos done. Only 10 minutes. I enjoyed looking at all of the digital camera. This place is awesome.
Staff is very helpful and I wish there were more places like this. They had everything that I use for film photography and more. The film selection is great and the staff was very knowledgeable and passionate. I will go here every time when I come to Los Angeles.
One of the few places that actually has photo chemicals in LA!
Worth the drive from the valley to get B&W film chemicals at great pricing. Anything you need for film photography and a solid digital section too. Lots of inkjet photo papers, printers etc. Friendly and always good info and advice.
The best place to get film photography equipment hands down! Ive gotten everything from developing equipment, paper, and film. And the staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this store!
This place is great. They have it all for analog photography and some good things for digital. I used to buy most of my supplies online, but Freestyle offer better prices and variety than eBay. Hard to believe but true.
Always have what I need and are always pleasant. Cannot speak to the employees knowledge since I always know what Im going for but they seem helpful.
Fast mail otder service. Usually get shipmemt in 3 days!
I didnt want to like them. I was loyal to Samys because I am a sucker for the huge beautiful vintage beauty of the building. This place is on my way to school and is reasonable and the staff is super friendly and extremely knowledgeable. I always come out of here feeling good about my purchase and going there is sorta like Disneyland.
Love it! One of the very few photo supply stores left in L.A. Better than Sammys camera. Student discounts available.
The place is a treasure for any creative person involved on analog photography. Great employees.Tons of film, paper, amazing selection on chemistry. Enlargers are way overpriced, there are better deals on used equipment on the free market. Some other items are a little bit more than some deals online, but it might worth for the convenience of having such a huge supply in one place, and a brick and mortar business that keeps it alive in early 2020...is mind boggling. They cary more analog stuff than other surviving camera stores and way more than the now gone Calumet had in their film days...combined. The store managed to have in stock the German made, classic film developer Atomal 49, in a non retail packaging... a ultra fine granulation developer I have bought and used last time in 1984.Just stop by, buy your supplies, be creative, free parking.
Always the best! They have items no other photo supply store has. Theyre passionate about the craft, reasonable priced and very helpful.
Staff is always incredibly helpful
Thomas behind the film counter, helped me find the right 120 film. He showed me examples and explained the differences. He was so nice and not at all haughty about it.
Amazing array of photo products at great prices. Their staff is also super helpful. A darkroom lovers dream as well as an oasis for the printing digital kid
They set aside the piece (green scree) just like I asked. Quick service, knowledgeable and friendly. I would be glad to come back again. Not to mention the item I asked for was half the price of what other stores I checked into! So glad I kept looking.
Went to buy some Porta 400. They had it. Looks like a great shop. Pls support it!
Very nice place.
Experts on digital printing and setting up printers one-on-one for excellent print quality.
Had to cancel an order, Kristina Loughery responded immediately and cancelled it with no problems. Ill definitely order from them in the future
I love this place, They have everything I need for my photography supplies. I also take all my film there to get developed. Their staff is very knowledgable and helpful.
So much of their inventory is in the back so you have to go online first to shop before you go in anyways. Browsing does nothing for you here. Kinda frustrating so just order online, but if youre doing that then you can probably find it cheaper anyway somewhere else.
They offer an extensive variety of film along with printing services - and all for a reasonable price. If youre in a hurry order online and pick up in store.
Great photography supplies. Good prices
I have been buying supplies from Freestyle for over 40 years. What a great store. They have everything you need for analogue photography. Very knowledgeable staff too.
One of the few places left in the country that has a wide array of quality film photography supplies - both common and rare. Theres also films available on their shelves that you quite literally arent going to find elsewhere. Every time I come in they are stocked with 35mm, 120/220, sheet film, Super8, and 16mm. If youre a little lost, the staff is generally knowledgeable, very helpful, and very nice. The unfortunate thing is that Freestyle is consistently more expensive than other (mostly online) outlets - but thats a worthwhile trade off for the generous selection and good knowledge. I wish they would work on building up a good film community in Los Angeles by opening up a community darkroom, hosting gallery events/photowalks, or maybe just doing a cameras and coffee mixer. I think that would really take this place to the next level.
They are on the other side of the country (from NY perspective, anyway) so I only use them for catalog ordering. Very fast service, great products and fair prices. Every time I get their catalog its like a shopping holiday all over again.
Go here all the time, mostly because of my photo classes. But i have gone here for personal reasons. Kept clean, good service, and my favorite part almost never a line.
A convenient place to buy one’s photography supplies online.
Amazing film photography store
If you need film or chemicals this is one of the only places in the country to go they have almost everything and the staff is knowledgeable.
This place was friendly and had a great selection of equipment and materials, including 35mm film like Fuji Velvia and Kodak TMax.
Gigantic film chemistry store. Somewhat skimpy on gear. Tones of inkjet papers. Decent prices, too.
Great experience. Great inventory. Very helpful.
Very good spot for a quick grab, nice and helpful staff
I had a small problem with the billing, which was solved by seller Kristina. Great prices and great service
Pretty good selection of darkroom supplies, chemicals, film, etc. if not a little overpriced. Employee who sold me a couple rolls of film seemed completely preoccupied like he was day dreaming and really wasnt helpful at all.
Friendly staff and great variety of film
Great resource and very helpful people there.
They had what I was looking for.
These guys know more about inkjet printing than anywhere else. They also have the biggest selection of film, paper and chemicals Ive ever seen. Thank you for existing!
They took care of me when I was in need. Thank you for your time and help.
Great selection and prices.
Excellent selection of films and chemicals. Knowledgeable staff!
Great products, reasonable prices, with great staff too!
Only a small item but treated as if id bought the store, great service, Thanks.
Good selection of supplies, nice staff.
I took a recent visit to this photography shop just to see if they did lens repairs, unfortunately they didnt but they supplied me with some other locations nearby that did along with phone numbers and addresses. Great service.
Great for black and white photographer s
Such a helpful and friendly photo store. They have a huge film selection stored in their glass door refrigerators.
Knowledgeable staff, great supply that is unparalleled in the photography world. I am a photo teacher and this is one of my main places I use.
A friendly little Photography supply store.
Great place, especially if you use film
Great place to buy photographic supplies!
I like freestyle, but one stop shop for cameras and equipment it is not. This store mostly sells dark room equipment, framing supplies and film. Youd be hard pressed to make any major camera, grip or lighting purchases here.
Great supply store for analog photographers
I want badly to give 5 stars but the student discount needs to be renewed every quarter, and they offer no other types of discounts.
