The pictures speak for themselves.Wide selection of stunning BONSAI TREES for indoor and outdoor! The young Asian guy helped me through a nice explanation on which would be the best pick for me, he also explained me which ones are the best bonsais’ for inside and which ones are best for the outside. He also told me many things on how to take care of the plant.I got educated about bonsai trees!! Nice experience!! Will be back!
This is a hidden gem💎 of all nurseries I visited so far. The place is kept by two generations, mother and daughter who are masters of their craft. Youll notice right away that the plants and flower are as healthy as can be. This is a nursery of quality and art from flowers to plants to bonsai trees 🌳. Youll remember when I say this is a place Youll always come back to!Very friendly and helpful staff🌞
Amazing plant nursery with some really incredible plants. And the bonsai are crazy! Also very expensive. Highly recommend visiting!
We had the best experience with Rudy!! I will definitely be going back. He was so helpful and friendly.
West LA is park poor, but this nursery is so beautiful it makes up for it in spades. Wandering around, I forget about daily problems and fall in the moment, appreciating nature. There are a few highlights here. First, it’s like a bonsai museum. Second, they have a nice selection of indoor plants, such as the snake plant (also known as the mother in laws tongue). Third, they have special soils, tools, and nutrients for bonsai plants. There are sometimes a few parking spaces in the back, inside the gates, along Sawtelle.
I haven’t bought anything here (yet), but I have been impressed by their selection and the heath of the plants. They have a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants including succulents, cacti, and bonsai. They also have a selection of pottery and some water feature and sculpture items, as well as fertilizers for whatever plants you buy there. They sell single plants as well as planters with multiple items arranged in them. Prices are generally on the higher side for the area.(Many) Other reviewers have commented on the rude service, which I have not experienced. On my most recent visit, I observed two different employees spending a good deal of time with a particularly needy and annoying customer who was asking a ton of really stupid questions, so perhaps service is hit or miss here.Either way, worth a stop if you like plants!
Went in to Nursery to purchase a very expensiveBonsai Pot. My wife picked one out. The employeeTold us he had them in the back and he was to Busy.As we left,The employee got back on his cell phone. We Will Not Go Back to this NurseryWe are Business Owners and understand the Importance of Customer Service !
Love this place. You can find a variety of terracotta pots with many colors!Highly recommended!
Horrible service, went there a few weeks ago and talked to the owners nephew kyle and he was so rude, he told us he didnt like the fact we knew stuff about bonsai and it made him want to charge us more for all this items (who says things like that to a costumer??) we had tried asking about some pieces of dead wood that they had thrown into a pile in the back area which seemed to have no been touched in ages, we wanted to purchase one for a bonsai and he proceeds to say it would cost $200 for this dead piece of wood which is outrages! Flash forward to yesterday we had come back to grab some pots and a few plants and the workers (two older white ladies) has not seemed at all interested in their job, we tried asking a few questions about plants to make sure they would be okay to have around cats and they did not seem to want to help us at all, same with the owner of the place we had tried talking to her as she had just arrived so we figured it would be easier to ask her the questions as its her place but he was even worse to talk to! we would have to chase her down as she seemed to try avoid us and even while talking to her she would be unresponsive and even walk away as if she didnt care for us at all. Not the type of service you would seem to get for someone buying $400 worth of plants. I honestly dont think I would spend any of my money there anymore or want to go back because it has been such horrible service. We had showed up around 3:30pm they close at 5pm so we had tons of time to shop, it had been an hour so 4:30pm and the ladies kept yelling at everyone that they were closing. Like they kept following us around even though we still had 30mins left until they closed to shop and pay, we had been looking at a tree we wanted to purchase but with the lady yelling at us nonstop about them closing soon made us not want to end up purchasing it. One of the ladies even started yelling at this one customer who had been waiting near the exit for someone so they could leave, she yelled saying we are closed even though mind you it was 4:30pm while the dude was on the phone he ended up saying I know im just trying to call my partner so we can leave. Also we had seen a tree we liked and it had a price tag saying it was $30 so we went to ask a lady to make sure it was that price for her to end up being extremely rude saying it wasnt something they had priced and she wasnt going to sell it to us even though had found it next to other plants and also in a big group of the same trees. All the bonsai they sell are EXTREMELY OVER PRICED! I understand that bonsai are very hard to make and take care of but it does not justify the prices for the badly taken care of bonsai they have, i saw a japanese maple which looked to be around 6 years old cost almost $400 and it looked so over grown and barely shapened. Maybe of the bonsai for sell do not seem like they trim or try shaping them much and they just slap a high price on them in hope of someone who doesnt know anything about bonsai comes along to buy them. I feel that this place cares more about making money then the care and quality of their bonsai or any plants they sell in general.
Terrific nursery, lots of unusual plants specifically chosen for our area. Helpful, knowledgeable staff.
Incredible bonsai from an artist. Well worth a visit.
Came in to find a plant in particular, waited patiently for an employee to help me out. To a white lady working there i guess if you are not buying anything you arent welcomed? I tried to get a white ladies attention she held her hand at my face and told me one second. She kept moving on to different customers who all just happened to be white while i was just ignored. I felt disrespected and unwelcomed. I will take my business elsewhere.
Bought a bunch of plants from Yamaguchi today to fill up our apartment. So happy with everything, from the service to the plants (obviously). Michiko helped us, she was so friendly and polite. Will definetly recommend this nursery to our friends and family! Looking forward to come back!
I could spend all day here. Lots of really healthy desirable plants for really reasonable prices. People were cool too
This nursery has a very nice selection of plants and fairly reasonable prices. Unfortunately, you won’t know the price until you check out as very few are marked. Also, the staff (one woman in particular) was extremely rude to us. When she saw that we were only carrying 3 small plants, she asked us to hurry up, take them to the checkout and leave so that other customers could shop (granted they were limiting the number of people due to Covid, however there was no line to enter). We had not yet finished shopping and needed pots but felt uncomfortable staying. I was taken aback that we were being asked to leave considering we were holding items to purchase and obviously paying customers! We considered leaving without buying our plants; but it wasn’t the plants fault and they needed a loving home.
Ive visited Yamaguchi several times over the past year to promote local businesses instead of chain places, but my last experience left me upset and disappointed. I called to check to see if a plant I had seen a few days prior was still available. After my second call, I was rudely told that they were too busy to look and asked can you just stop by, were really busy! I live 7 mins away and when I arrived there was maybe 2 people there. No biggie, but when I tried to make conversation about the particular plant I wanted to buy (how it grows, what soil to use, how to prune), I was met with the most curt attitude with a response of if thats what it says on the sticker then thats what it does. I almost walked away, but this was the only place that carried what I was looking for. Besides having a sub-par selection, the ungracious and lack of friendliness about their plants assured that I will NEVER patronize their business again. Luckily, Hashimotos is just down the street with the most friendly staff and a better selection.
Yamaguchi is a family own small business with nice and honest employers. I come here a lot and got a lot of help on how to taking care of the plants and bonsai. Their employers are very honest and never try to sell me anything I dont need. They even gave me advice on making the decision of spending money on expensive bonsai tools which I appreciated a lot. The owner is very knowledgeable about plants and her pre-bonsai plant collection is from good sources. Even if the price of some items are a bit higher than Amazon, I still buy them and support the local business.
DISAPPOINTED!I dropped my $100 (original cost) bonsai tree at Yamaguchi on 10/17/2019, for a root trimming and shaping if possible, with the understanding that if the cost exceeded $50 they were to call me before proceeding. After a month I called them for a status (no call from them), they were very apologetic there had been an oversight and they had not touched my tree. We discussed the possibility of shaping the tree and they informed me that there was nothing that could be done with respect to shaping the tree, but they would trim the roots and replant in a new pot.Almost another month passed (12/14/2019) without any contact so I called again. I was told my tree is ready, that the roots had been trimmed, soil changed, new pot, and branches had been trimmed at a cost of $126.00 (really), what happened to if the cost exceeded $50.00 call me.Frankly, I thought they would discount the price due to their embarrassing inefficiency, held the plant for two months without doing anything the first month. Finally spoke with the owner, it took two phone calls. She explained that $50 covered the root trimming that the new pot, soil ($15.00-really for a cup of dirt), and shaping (which was cutting the branches that crossed) were attributable to the additional $76.00. She explained they put a great deal of time into the tree. Probably forgot that she told me a month ago that the tree had sat the prior month and they hadnt done anything with it.I realize every business needs to make a profit, but Yamaguchi seems a little over priced. I may be ignorant to the art of Bonsai and maybe it is the going price and the inefficiency is attributable to it being an art, I dont know. What I do know is I am not happy with my experience at Yamaguchi Nursery, I probably wont be a good referral source for them, and I defiantly will go somewhere else next time.
Excellent selection of Bonsai and helpful friendly staff.
Love that they are offering contactless pick up and online ordering. Got my plants and soil! All my plants look healthy and happy.
The plants always arrive viable and in great shape. I like Sundews and he packs them with everything you need to grow them successfully. (so long gnats!) The included care instructions are thorough and spot on. He really knows his stuff!
Love this place! There was beautiful bonsai and healthy plants everywhere. We got some soil, decorative rocks, drift wood looking pot and air plant here. The lady is extremely nice and cost is reasonable too!
Such a cute store. I just purchased a small monster vase for air plants, his name is Murphy. You can walk around in this store for a while and be amazed at how creative the owners got with decorating. Take a peak and see if you find something to take home?
We found so many beautiful and very healthy plants, along with good vibes and inspiration. The owner is very sweet and gave us top quality service. We bought a splendid Philodendron two months ago and its growing bigger and stronger every week.
Gotta love this place. They have all the strange edibles that I cant find anywhere else, a great selection of native and drought-tolerant plants, they propagate many of their own plants, and have a great stray cat collection. Also very friendly and knowledgeable staff and a fun atmosphere with lots of demos everywhere.
We had great service here, we got great recommendations both for plants and for a landscape expert who turned out amazing for our yard. The people are very, very knowledgeable and pleasant. Thanks again.
They seem to be very knowledgeable and the type to really care for their plants. They also send you home with instructions so you wont kill the plant. I have a black thumb so I need all he help I can get.
This is a great little shop for anyone interested in bonsai and wanting to take the plunge. The have a good selection and VERY reasonable prices. There is also a really nice selection of orchids as well.
This is a magical place. Family owned & loved for many years. Staff ls knowledge & friendly. Varied species not found elsewhere. If you enjoy a botanical experience, this place is for you.
Lovely owners. Knowledgeable employees and a wonderful selection. The only nursery I visit in LA.
So many wonderful terrariums and plants to choose from! I bought a gift here and not only was it a fantastic experience the delivery was seamless and I cant wait to go back. Fantastic value!
The plants here are top notch. Not your typical bonsai nursery. They have plants here that are hundreds of years old to only a few years old. The ladies working here are very sweet and helpful. I love coming here even if Im not going to buy a plant, just to look at all the awesome bonsai.
When you need to indulge your bonsai/orchid/cool plants fix, look no further
Great customer service on the phone and in person. Tons of supplies in stock for almost any garden need. Will be coming back.
An amazing bonsai nursery with a great selection of plants. Large selection of plants suitable for bonsai also, with plenty of professional inspiration. Owners are great!
I like this place as they have a good collection of nice plants and very helpful staff who can guide you properly.
Great place and great help from the moment I walk in i felt welcome they gave me a walk thru of all there trees
They have nice plants but the staff seems extremely annoyed if you ask them anything. Ive gotten one word answers, rolled eyes and thinly veiled disgust. This nursery is very out of my way and i would have been a loyal customer if they hadnt acted like I was causing them a headache by asking simple questions. Do you carry astrophytum was met with a no and the woman walked away from me.
Absolutely loved this place. Reasonable price; helpful and friendly staff, what else can you look for?
I grew up in Los Angeles and began to study the art on bonsai in 1973. I have logged hundreds of hours in nurserys and never enjoyed myself as much as I do at Yamaguchi Nursery. I moved to the Bay Area in 1978, but every time I go to L.A. (for business or pleasure) I carve out time to visit Yamaguchi Nursery. I just returned from a college tour with my son and took him with me over to Yamaguchis. Should he end up in LA I hope he finds the same magic there I continue to find.
Lovely little nursery in the city with a great selection!
Service alone will keep me coming back. I spied that a friend had bought a hanging terrarium from Roots and bookmarked this place. Even though I live 2 blocks away, it was across the freeway and on a less beaten path; then one day I was determined to create my own terrarium and trekked over.
Love this place. Everyone that works there is knowledgeable and really helpful, not to mention they have the best plants!!
I needed some succulents for a photo shoot last minute and Yamaguchi Bonsai Nursery really came through. They were such a pleasure to work with and the succulents arrived perfectly!
I like to support small business but Im not really so sure about this one. I came in looking for small plastic trays as I wanted to grow microgreens (sprouts basically) indoors. Old Japanese lady told me that no, they didnt have anything like that but also then scoffed at me and said it would never work indoors. Despite her negative comments, Ive been able to successfully grow microbrews with the help of fluorescent lights, timer, and a small fan.
Not very customer friendly and prices are high for the products
Interesting place to visit.Beautiful display.
Never been treated so rudely by anyone! the staff was ridiculous and uppity.
The collection here is out of the top drawer
Overpriced and very unhelpful staff. Lots of poorly taken care of old Bonsai for sale. $200-500+ cost bonsai.
