Hes never played one before and they are expensive to buy- $800 +/- for used. We decided to rent and try before investing $$$$ on a new venture that might not stick. Rental is $40/MO. Unfortunately, there is a two-month minimum and a deposit due on the spot=$100. This is the only thing that made our visit less than perfect. Still, $100 vs. $800 is a plus.CUSTOMER SERVICE: While we were there, my son found an electric guitar and an amp that he liked, and we bought both. Affordable, good-quality stuff, and THANKFULLY a fair return policy. Because, you know, teenagers.There were two people helping us: one was with me doing rental ppwk, credit app, etc, and the other guy was across the store with my son in the guitar-n-amp section. They were great, and we had a good time. We spent maybe 30 minutes there.COMPARISON TO OTHER RENTAL STORES:I am declaring myself to be an expert info resource for renting and buying noise-producing stuff for my three kids. Im pleased to report that a few of the noisemakers evolved to produce surprisingly pleasant sound. Some people even went as far as calling it music! Recorders, violas, violins, piano and keyboards, harmonicas, trombones, acoustic & electric guitars, drums, ukuleles...I think that sums it up.its usually a DREADED chore to go to (a different)music store, wait in a line with 50 other people in a cluttered, claustrophobic, and stifling-hot 20x20 room with 7-ft ceilings and no AC and all instruments were in the back. I think its literally someones converted basement. Anyway, they usually have a single person behind the dusty plywood counter using an old-fashioned calculator, papers everywhere, copies of contracts and receipts and checks, etc. No POS or other tech in sight...ugh. Meanwhile, there is a second person, a runner, because, remember, ALL of the stuff is in the back. It took FOR-E-VER.If you have kids in band/orchestra in this area, you KNOW the place Im talkin bout 😏. Consider yourself saved!~~AMK~~

Super nice local music store. Mostly guitar focused but with a dabbling in pro audio, synth, drums and band instruments. Good selection of guitars but I do find the truss rods to be in need of adjustment on nearly all guitars I have tried.

I needed a thing and they had that thing. They also had accessories to that thing. If I ever need a thing again, will shop here.

I purchased my the newest addition to my guitar family last Friday. Marvin the marvelous guitar wunderkind, Provided 5 star knowledgeable and know how. This is the kind of service you could never receive shopping at Guitar Center with sales clerks who literally look down their snobby noses at you. Ignoring you while you shop their out of tune stock and deal with their lack of knowledge.

I have only spent a little time in this store but Wow is the service great. I am still new at playing guitar but they certainly took the time to help me and walk me through every step, unlike some of the big box stores. I will most certainly be making my way back in soon.

Great prices on a quick restring and setup for an old guitar that needed some love. They were quick, courteous and had some great and very helpful suggestions for strings and cleaning methods.

Bought a Yamaha keyboard. Staff made it super simple. He asked what my goals were, then sold me one with no more nor no less of my requested features. Price was less than two other businesses... worth it to drive a few more miles.

All I can say about Portland Music at this location is good. The polite demeanor and excellent customer service is bar none. Even after I purchased an Eastman limited edition parlor guitar, I had a factory issue and the sales person did everything he could do to fix it. After truss rod adjustments and a new set of strings, unfortunately the string buzz was still there. I decided not to bother the good folks at the Milwaukie/Oak Grove location any longer and have emailed Eastman directly with the issue.

Portland also has great music stores in this is one of them. You could spend hours in here theres a lot to go through and its a really nice place friendly people. now we are Portland Oregon and we like to keep it weird! This is a must-see I have to come check it out.

Portland Music Company has consistently had all the little odds and ends I have needed over the years, from keyboard stands to mic stand-to-camera stand adapters. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the inventory is quality stuff. The new location is nice and easy to get to, and well worth a visit.

Ive been a musician for quite some time. Been to stores all around the globe, not just this country, but many countries. The customer service at these stores is phenomenal. Truly. They care about their customers and they treat them well. One employee in particular (Richard) has helped my band out so much, out of the kindness of his own heart, and checks in with us on a regular basis. Thats customer service. Try and find that at a corporate conglomerate. Much love and mad respect to Portland Music Company. They are our music store of choice.

Literally the best music shop in the area. The guys there remember me by name, they know what Im interested in, and they take really good care of me. I havnt been to a guitar center in almost a year, not only because the service at just about any location is piss, but because their business model is a joke. Portland Music Company is my official hub for any need.

I visited to buy some guitar strings and accessories. There is one guy in the store that had a personality of a fence post, was not very forthcoming about information about certain products. The other one couldnt be bothered to save his life, so I didnt bother asking him for much help. All in all a disappointing experience but they have an extensive selection I would have to say. It is basically a really nice Guitar Center, but less welcoming.

I came in for some keyboard speakers.I picked up a great set of Roland 6 near field with sub at a great price. I also scored a Presonus computer interface. I might have done a little better online but you can not beat the local customer service and support this store provides. I am very satisfied with my experience here.

I really WANT to like this store, and if you play guitar or keys, youll love it. However, as a drummer, its disappointing. Ive been in 3 times since they moved, and all 3 times Ive left empty handed because they didnt have anything I needed. To be clear, Im not looking for anything special (Promark 5A wood-tips?) and each time Ive visited its We should be getting more next week.I try to support local businesses, and was stoked when they opened 2 minutes from my house, but it will be Rhythm Traders or (gasp!) Guitar Center unless they can figure out what theyre doing.

I was just going in for some music scores and this location barely has anything available. It would be great for the east side of town to have a place to browse and purchase sheet music.

I think that the manager Andy is a straight-up great guy. All through the problems that Ive had being homeless, Ive come to know these guys, I put instruments on layaway and they worked with me even through a major illness. Today they gave me a free patch cord when I paid of my amp.

Found everything I needed. Reasonable prices and the staff was friendly and helpful. Their lacking a little in there percussion section and finding the sticks and heads I use was a bit of a jumble but I did find everything I needed! Ill be back!

This is a good music shop for all your basic needs and a decent, selection of all the regular gear--Fender, Ibanez, etc. The prices are reasonable and the service varies depending on who you talk to, but is never downright terrible or uncomfortable. Everybody there is knowledgeable about particular types of equipment and I have learned a thing or there a few times. I have had one guitar purchase there and it was a good deal. They also have good deals on their name brand guitar cables which they repair for free. Theyll have most items and brand names you expect at guitar shops. I recommend this shop

I went in for sheet music, a particular item. I was offered assistance immediately but declined as I thought Id browse my way to what I wanted even though I didnt have a lot of time. Finally I did ask for help and was taken directly to the item. Very helpful, and very well stocked sheet music selection, at least for piano. Ive read all the reviews and cant comment on others experience, but I am impressed that the owners respond and in at least a few instance offer an apology for someones bad experience. Im at 5 stars for now and plan to return for more browsing when I have the chance.

Very rude. I went to this store with $1,500 in hand and intended to buy a guitar and possibly an amp. Upon entering the store I was given the third degree and made to feel very uncomfortable.i wanted to try out a few different guitars, but after the way I was made to feel I decided to give my business and money to Old Town Music. Old Town made me feel welcome and did not hassle me. I play and teach, and I will never recommend Portland Music to any one. I cannot stress the rudeness shown me strongly enough. I am going to go and make a post on Angies List and any other website I can think of. I hope this will have a very negative effect on their business.

I have been working with the entire staff for almost two months. I have purchased a Yamaha P-35 Digital Piano, piano stand, headset and piano bench. I have been purchasing music books, sheet music and will purchase more equipment and music in the future. A great place with good people!

I tried selling a couple of instruments here. The buyer, Doug, was extremely pretentious and condescending toward me FOR NO REASON. I have worked in customer service for years, so I am always respectful and friendly when I enter any establishment as a customer to make the employees jobs a little easier.My guess is that Doug is highly knowledgeable in this field, which is why PMC keeps him around. Hes just that old grumpy guy that we cant fire because no one knows instruments like he does so let him be rude to prospective sellers and make them feel stupid.

I Good; I bought my Grand Piano there, and it plays great. And I also buy my sheet music there. The Best Music Store in the N.W.. I also shop at the P.M.C. on Broadway; because I play the Sax, and they have Supplies for all woodwinds and brass instruments.

Excellent service, great prices and selection!I bought a Gretsch Streamliner, and when I told Richard (guitar sales rep) that Im taking it back home to Israel and I dont have a proper case, he went out of his way to help. During that he also gave me great tips and advices about models I should consider and how I should take a tele on a jet ;). Really happy I went there!

Great Fender selection. I stopped in yesterday to see if I was still in love with the 72 Tele I played last week. I had wanted to check out another model, too, and asked someone to get it down. Before the guy handed it off to me, he asked if I was actually there to buy anything. No where in retail is this an acceptable thing to say someone. It was backhanded and snide and I wish I would have responded differently in the moment, but I said yes and without bothering to ask me what I normally play through he plugged me into a cheap practice amp and then he was gone. I played for a couple of minutes while it sunk in how much judgment had just been passed on me and I no longer felt welcomed in the store and I left for Old Town. When I set the guitar down, the guy picked it back up and frantically wiped it down as if it had become sullied in those short couple of minutes. I had a fifteen hundred dollar budget that Ill now likely take to Warmoth or another store. Id be remiss if I didnt mention how knowledgeable and friendly the staff was last weekend. Its, alongside that Tele, what brought me back. Unfortunately I think this experience has ruined that for me.

I feel like there may be one or two employees at PMC that have no business working retail, and their behavior is what has caused all the negative reviews Im seeing here. While it is unfortunate to the other folks that do good work there, I cannot recommend this store to anyone. Admittedly, Ive had some good experiences there, but my last time coming will be my last.As others have mentioned, the customer service I received here while looking to get the strings replaced on my cheap guitar was unacceptable. The employee told me - as if he were offended that I would bring such garbage into his dignified shop - that he would not work on my guitar because he was afraid of what else I might find. I explained that I dont play guitar, and that I just needed the guitar restrung so that my friends that do play could jam with me in the rare instance they didnt have theirs with them. I made it VERY clear that if something were to happen to the guitar during restringing, it would be no issue whatsoever (by now Im fully confused by this entire encounter).I tried to ask for clarification as to what specific issue was causing his concern, as I have never had issues handing over my guitar for restringing (Gracewinds in Corvallis used to do it for free on the same guitar!). My question was met with indignation, and he just rudely repeated himself without actually explaining anything. He was making it very clear that I was a waste of his time - even going as far to just walk away from me while I was in mid-sentence.Eventually, another employee interjected and recommended I go to Old Town... She was right, and that is where Ill be going in the future (just wish they sold drums!).I know people have bad days, and working retail can be an absolute nightmare (especially in a music shop). Ive been there! This guy was far beyond having a bad day, though, and has cost PMC yet another customer. Based on the other reviews Im reading here and elsewhere, this is not the first time this has happened.PMC - I hope you read this, and I have a sneaking suspicion youll know who the individual is Im referencing in this review. If I had the wherewithal to get his name when I was there, I would gladly give it to you. Alas, Im not normally the I want to speak to your manager type, so the thought didnt occur to me.

Absoletuly pathetic attitude. i looked online for a local pro tools expert and found one that works for portland music co. it even says contanct him for anything you need. i just got off the phone with some guy that works there and when i asked for help he snapps at me what?! are you serious?! your really think WERE going to help you?! he asked if i bought it from them, when i said no he snapps back what makes you think we would help you!? that doesnt make any sense! then he asks why i havent contacted pro tools about it. i told him i needed a local expert that i could pay to fix it. he snapps one more time well we dont offer that service! absolutey pathetic tone in his voice as if i committed murder. i then hung up on him. i would love to hear his justification in a reply. its really sad i bought a really nice guitar there a few years ago and the service was excellent. this guy should be fired immediately i really wish i would have gotten his name.
