I was recommended by my friend at work to check this place out and was so amazed how much retro games and consoles they had. I was able to find 4 first Nintendo cartridge covers with the official Nintendo logo on it. I was so tempted to buy the Legend of Link and Ghost and Goblins for the Nintendo but had to hold back until next pay day. I am sure you wont be disappointed if you was to check this place out and I am also sure you may end up finding what your looking for in retro games.
Fascinating find for the retro game renegade. Staff is knowledgeable in the gaming software history, and they carry current and old games in both local and import flavor. They dont always have certain games, like say a specific Japanese only Sega Saturn title, but they can advise in what you can do or order it if possible.Just know that things can cost money, depending on its rarity, age, and other factors. All in all, a good place for a collector to visit.
This place is amazing. Their inventory is unmatched and their extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff is a huge plus. I highly recommend
Initially went here this past weekend to build up on my Switch Library. I enjoy going to these places more so than the typical GameStop not just to glance at the retro games and accessories they have here but the vibe overall is far more friendlier and welcoming. Theres no corporate vibe to the place, the guys that run the shop care about their games and they have a very expansive and diverse stock of games that can accommodate virtually anyone that comes in. Even though I got what I came for, I sure as hell wish I had more to spend because there are games that I saw that I couldnt find elsewhere. Ill definitely be back soon!
Knowledgeable any friendly staff. Took care of my needs quickly.
Ill give them credit, they have games you cant find any place else outside of Ebay. But I cant ever see myself visiting here again as their prices are insane. They are about 30% more then eBay prices. Ive never seen so many $200 pre-owned PS2 games that arent Haunting Ground, Kuon or Blood Will Tell is insane. It was nice to see they had a game I was looking for in stock but seeing the price I just left the store and went to ebay and saved $40.I understand needing to make a profit but I just dont understand charging more then Ebay. Half the time I enter the store I overhear other customers talking about the prices. No one can complain about Video Games New York once you see what they charge here.
Others have said it already, and Ill echo the sentiment: This place has every game you could think of if youre willing to give an arm, a leg, and your firstborn child. If youre looking for one particular game that you cant find anywhere else and money is no object, this is your place. If you do happen to value your savings though, perhaps youd be better suited elsewhere.Still a great store with an extremely varied selection, but I never find myself actually buying anything while Im there, personally.
A small inconspicuous store in midtown with a large selection of games. I was able to find a game that Id been searching for in no time. Its one of those New York City stores that can cater to the niches of the city due to its density.
Everything was marked up pretty hard. Switch games that are still on sale at any big box store for $40-60 listed for $80+ here. I get that its in midtown but thats still crazy
Seeing the old games and systems I grew up seeing come to light was awesome. Everyone that works there is awesome.
Best video game store in NY. The stuff are great, friendly and very knowledgeable about video games and the gaming community.
This gaming store is more suited towards collectors than any other type of person. Do NOT come in with the mindset of buying current electronics and video games because youll usually be paying 60% more for something you couldve gotten at a much more reasonable price in any local Gamestop or online store. So, before you arrive, expect hiked up prices and have a plan to leave with something of novelty, short supply, or at best, rare pieces of gaming history.
If it is possible they wouldn’t even be receiving this one star as they are not deserving. Very unethical business practices. Attempts to sells fake games labeled as originals. Very overpriced. Have spoken to many others who have had a similar experience. Places like this shouldn’t stay in business. Scum of the earth here. Also have heard of online scams they attempt under sudo names. Anything to try to make a buck off someone.
It is a nice store with great selection. I couldn’t believe they have so many sealed and rare games and systems I spent like an hour there just browsing. However, it’s true the price isn’t ideal. If you are a retro gaming fan, I would recommend view this place as a museum of some sort - you may not find a deal but a lot excitement discovering rare stuff.
Here’s the thing with J & L,Their collection of games is EXTENSIVE. Chances are if you’re looking for something they’ll have it which is a huge plus since the same can’t be said about their competitors in the city. However, the price that you’ll pay to acquire said item will likely be more expensive than not only their competition, but oftentimes it is more than buying online. The price difference isn’t small either. Shopping elsewhere, in my experience, can sometimes save you HUNDREDS of dollars depending on what it is you’re looking for. Also the staff while very friendly, don’t feel at all passionate about the games and consoles they sell. I won’t necessarily knock them for this, but if you’re a retro gaming fan like me I’m sure you’d love to be able to shop at a place where the staff seem just as excited as you are about what they’re selling. ESPECIALLY being that you’re buying it at a premium price. I went in multiple times eager to be recommended a new series only to be met with very quick and generic answers. AGAIN don’t get me wrong theyre nice people and I haven’t had a negative experience with their customer service, It just felt very transactional.Overall it’s not a bad place to shop but when I’m looking for a new game or trying to pick up new tech I ONLY go to JNL after I’ve exhausted all other options and the online price of what I’m looking for matches their price.
This place will overcharge you for items you can get at retail price. Just saw joy cons were $99 when you can get it for retail easily at Best Buy or target 😂 these are the people who are scalpers and order tons of items just so they can resale at a high price. Don’t support these people
Sell reproductions as authentic, also connected to an eBay account that scams sellers and leaves plenty of negative feed back. Be wary. Visit other HONEST locations
Very helpful staff. Allowed us to test out the game on the console before buying to ensure it worked. Would recommend.
One of the best spots to get rare, retro and games of this generation including collectables
Always have whatever PS4 game Im looking for and never let me down.
Overpriced and scummy, games are sold for well over double or triple the price you can find online in better condition and other stores in the area. Store even had the gaul to sell a used PS5 upfront for $1000 but kept the original $500 MSRP price on it. Absolutely awful and a huge scam. Go to videogamesnewyork instead of this scam.
Amazing selection. It was cool seeing games that Ive been looking for for years. But the prices were way too high. No way I would buy anything there. Sorry.
I wish I can give 0 stars. DONT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE. The prices are ridiculous. Total scam. Don’t pay double for something you can get online for much cheaper. Their amiibo Prices are also a RIP OFF. I find myself coming into this store and leaving without buying anything a few times already. NOT SURE HOW THESE GUYS ARE STILL OPEN.
Known to try and pass fake games as authentic and run a scam eBay account. Buyer beware, look for more honest sellers
Check this place out! Excellent selection of almost every retro console and game your heart might desire!
They have too many stuffs about video games, it’s a good place, but my 3 Stars rating is because the workers or employees are very serious, they look boring... and this is a Video Game Store, it should be fun, but I felt in the wrong place... also it’s expensive, $70 bucks for an old video game for Wii??? this is one of the reasons why, sometimes, the people chooses buy it on line, perhaps....
Always great for trading in old gear! Friendly owners
Lol this place charges $80 for madden 21 even tho madden 22 cost $60. Also Pokémon games that are worth maybe $20 they sell for $1000s do not support this place. I literally have these “$1000” game sitting in a box.
Felt nostalgic with all the retro games and consoles they have
Decent selection with high but not outrageous prices. Staff is so-so.
Excellent service. Large assortment of video game consoles, games & accessories. (Also good place to have them repaired when they break). Conveniently located in midtown Manhattan near subway and bus.
If your looking for any game its more then likely here. Went to 3 gamestops just to get a copy of Neo def will be back!
Was looking for a certain controller for days and this was the only place that had it in stock, this place is a beautiful place to go for gamers.
I’ve been going to J&L Game for years now and it’s the best place to buy games. Better deal than GameStop and wider collection too. If you live in NYC J&L Game should be your first and only stop to buy video games
My favorite video game store in nyc! Great staff an all types of games too choice from. They even sell yugioh cards 😁
Pros:Huge SelectionEvery consoleClean gamesEverything is professionalCons:Top dollar for every gameEverything is behind the counter.Messy below the counterNo deals, no haggling, no discounts.Hard to see some game selections due to stacking
J & L Games is the best place to purchase video games and consoles their service is amazing i love this place
Horrible experience. They sell fakes of “authentic” games
Great spot for local game necessities.
A Nice collection of absurdly priced items.
Great place to find retro games or get repairs for your old consoles little over price on some stuff but its a great place to at least check it out to see if you can find something
Im giving this a one star because this store have good video games and all, but the price is very expensive. No jokes because for instance, if you plan to get a PS Vita, they cost $500 out of nowhere. Honestly, I recommend others to not go to this store, and find a better video game store other than this one.
This place brought me back too my days in the arcade which is beautiful very clean place and nice staff they know there shyt ... but the prices are bogus even for a 20 game used anywhere else its 30- 40 dollars i guess that becuae of the location but those prices are way too much
These guys are amazing!! Not only they have a vast amount of variety of vintage games and news ones, they quick fixed my New 3DS Xl at a fair price!
Great costumer service. They always have what I am looking for.
Its a decent place to get import games and hard to find prices. Its a little pricey but the price is worth it if you find that game you have been searching for.
Imagine buying a gift on Christmas for a kid and realize that the store ripped you off. I purchased a PlayStation that was suppose to include 3 additional games. I watched my god son open his gift and only 1 game was included. If I paid extra for the three games I expected three not one. People that take advantage of other during the holidays are the worst type of people. The game was extremely expensive I accept that but why short me on the games that’s lame. Don’t buy from this fraud.
Great store has almost any game you can think of but theres this one worker that answers the phone giving rude sarcastic answers to your questions obviously could tell he doesnt want to be there..
Great gaming store! Any and everything you need or want. Great staff very knowledgeable
In my experience i was amazed of the collection at the store but I went the guy that was overweight would always had an attitude when I had questions.
That store was awesome! It took me back to my eighties.
Never been dont know why I am writing a revue and I know I spelled that wrong ok
Great spot i mean going here really took me a trip down memory lane it was like my whole childhood in one store many great selections of games to choose from literally every system you can think of is in this store and the associates are very nice and very knowledgeable I definitely recommend this place if youre looking to get a great at the past
So much awesome stuff. A bit cramped due to the volume of games but its only a good thing!
YOUR PRICES ARE OUT OF CONTROL!I HAVE A RETRO GAMING STORE I GO TO ALL THE TIME ALREADY, I WAS TRYING TO FIND SOME PLACE NEW JUST TO SEE AND THUS PLACE LOOKED COOL UNTIL I WALKED IN AND SAW THE PRICES. WHY ARE GAMES $299? AND THEY ARE USED... WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE? I WOULDNT SPEND 2 CENTS IN THIS STORE I FEEL LIKE IM GETTING ROBBED BY JUST WALKING IN.. NO WAY KEEP YOUR 299 DREAMCAST GAMES
Decent selection of items, but pricing is pretty ridiculous. And don’t bother trying to sell them anything. I’ve tried several times and never hear them offer more than 30% market value.
I placed an order online and it was cancelled a few days later without an explanation. I have purchased games from their physical location after a trip to New York and was excited to purchase from their online store when they had more games I needed for my collection. Currently waiting for an explanation why my order was cancelled. Will update when I receive a response. Reading other reviews, it sounds like the they will cancel orders and up the price. I have no issue with that if the price has changed that much since they listed it, but it wouldve been nice to be notified and given an opportunity to pay the difference.
If your looking for a gaming relic or need repair there is no other place. With that said your paying full price at best, dont come looking to get a deal or make money selling games. This is a buy only establishment.
Scams eBay listings with false refunds, over priced store.
Im not surprised this place has great reviews....they opened up a couple of min early to help me get the game i came for, which was in immaculate condition (Kirby air ride). I wish j had more time to talk about the games and appreciate the shop but I was rushed, which they completely understood. Nice store, nice (well informed) people
Wonderful store. They are very helpful and kind. So many games to choose from, rare games, many different game consoles including older generation consoles and many different accessories for game consoles are also sold here. I recommend any gamer living in NYC to come to this store. I will definitely go here again.
I was riding through the boroughs and up seeing the store walked in amazing things great prices
Bit expensive for stuff that can be found online, cheaper
The inventory and selection is actually pretty great, Im sure that most people can find what they are looking for here. Unfortunately the prices are extremely expensive and some things are even 3 times their normal price. I do not recommend buying something here unless you are desperate for the item.
Scammers, dont buy here.
Youre going to pay double what anything should cost. Just use eBay.
Today I went foe a Playstation 3 controller, when I left I had a Dreamcast console and a Gamecube console. I had a little difficulty getting the Dreamcast to work, but after returning to the store for them check the system, it work when i returned to work. I have no complaints about this store, after 5 years the service is still excellent and the variety of merchandise is unbelievable.
Went in to find Classic Tetris for the NES. Spoke to a gentleman in the back of the retro game section. Was extremely helpful and patient with me looking for I believe the last copy they had. Once he found the game, he double and triple checked the cartridge on a console to verify the game worked well. I am 100% satisfied and look forward to coming back to purchase more retro games in the near future.
Large variety of games and accessories! Plenty that you could not find elsewhere, but a good amount of the items are overpriced compared to other places.
A lot of games just need to be more involved than whats ordinary for the extraordinary customers
BEST PLACE BETTER THEN GAMESTOP AND carries a lot of retro games
Got alot of classic games and consoles. Abit pricey but what do you expect from a midtown store!
While they have a good selection they overprice their stuff for no reason that can easily be found online, this place should be your last in case you haven’t found what you’re looking for
Nice place to find rare items
I Had A GameBoy Lying Around Needed Some Extra Cash Found This Amazing Gem And The Rest Was History Workers Are Mad Friendly And Helpful I Rather Support This Mom And Pops Store Then Go To GameStop
I love this place and they have every system there and the games and also they have old system from the old times in good condition
Great place if youre looking for something specific and hard to get, but generally overpriced. Some Vita and 3DS games I saw there were half the price at the nearby GameStop, even GameStop had a SEGA Genesis for half the price of this place.Again, its a good place with a ton of stuff, but if you shop around or shop online you can find most of the stuff for a fraction of the price. So if you want the convenience of popping into a store and having your item right away then this is the place for you.
If its an old, collectible item, or an import, expect it to be grossly overpriced. Just buy from Playasia as an alternative. (Unless you absolutely need it) Clearly a tourist trap for the city. Besides that, service is give or take.Walked in on a Wednesday around 1600hrs for a single new release, with about 7 other people in the store waiting. 5 staff members there and only one was ringing up customers. Others were either standing there or literally playing a 3ds... really.I recommend only coming here to pick up new releases that drop before street date. This store does sell games before street date which is good for youtubers or just fans who do t want to wait. Pre orders are bumpy aswell. Did it once, process was long and store forgot to call me when the item was in stock...I had to look on the site to find out they had it after I paid for it in full 2 weeks prior....
Very kind staff, huge variety of games
Would give 0 stars if I could. Bought something from them that was overpriced compared to everywhere else on the web, but they gurenteed 3-4 business days shipping so I decided to support their business. The item didn’t arrive after 14 business days. When I shared how upset I was, they said I was “funny”.
Im conflicted about this review, so Im going middle of the road.I found a couple games I needed for my collection at fairly reasonable prices (on the high end of market value, but not too far). They turned out to be in crazy good condition. Honestly, one of the best purchases Ive ever made. If they priced everything this reasonably, Id be a recurring customer, maybe even monthly.Sadly, I checked the prices of these games the next day and J&L bumped them up by 15% (which is a lot for semi-old games already over $300, new-in-box). Those items are now squarely 30-50% above market average, which is not competitive in the slightest.I guess the lesson here is buy first, ask later. This wouldnt have been the first time a second-hand game store tried to pull a price bump pre-purchase had I gave them an opportunity. Super disappointing. All that said, J&L seems to be the real deal, but a little more respect to market value would go a long way. Cheers.
This place is overcharging for the next gen consoles dont buy from them. Scalpers should be not be rewarded.
Steep on prices! Good finds, and unfortunately the customer service is okay!
It is awsome and make u feel like kid agian. Awsome stuff and games.😊😁🤗
A lot of games, great service
They make great sandwiches.
I love this store! I always find the games I want, its a little pricey but its worth it! Much better than GameStop.
I dont see nothing good to buy there no cool games 😕
Completely over priced even for city 1000 dollar ps5 200 dollars for a basic amibo not even a rare one that u can buy the exact same one at the Nintendo store for 20 bucks completely un excitable will never be going back
This place is impressive. I was in town for work and wish I had more time to spend in the store. Their collection of video games and systems is second to none. Theyve got every system a collector could ever want, all the way back to game and watch systems from Nintendo. This place is a gem for anyone looking for retro games, oh ya, and they have tons of new and used games for every system under the sun. LOL
Cool place .they have everything I think a gamer would want and buy.price is expensive. pay for what you want
The selection was impressive. Good variety but of all the video game stores Ive been to they are more expensive than most. If they are more competitive with their prices they would be a great place to shop at.
Scammer
Found a game through Google shopping listed for $99.99 at this store. I promptly purchased it but was refunded within the week. Seller jacks the price up to 199.99 on the website a few days after...
