Fentons is Oaklands finest ice cream parlor (arguably) and for good reason! They have a plethora of flavors (no sampling) and different ways to experience - scoops, sundaes, sandwiches. I got the chocolate peanut butter crunch single scoop and man was it delicious. I could taste the real peanut butter crunch with every spoonful. The place was packed on a Saturday night and we had to wait 10 minutes to order, but it was worth the wait.Seating inside is only if you dine in - they do have a few benches outside if youre just getting ice cream here. Come here if youre looking for some quality ice cream and to support a local favorite.
Pure chaos inside and out and overpriced, but a really fun experience. In our experience and Insta-friendly world, places like Fentons either thrive or die. Fentons has thrived with their old-timey soda fountain feel and wide and yummy menu, but the added popularity has brought total chaos outside and in managing the demand. Food is yummy and almost all “comfort” of diner type foods. Ice cream menu is huge and all items were great. Prices are high but portions are big. Expect long and confusing waits for a table, long waits for food and a very loud and chaotic environment. Is it worth it? Sure. Would I do it again? Eh….
A classic for late-night cravings and a best place to satiate the whims of your sweet tooth!I have been here multiple times since moving to the Bay area...and its not much different in terms of long queues that end with a generous serving of ice cream sundae of your choice. My only recommendation: come here empty stomach, and take it taht you WILL underestimate your capacity to eat ice cream. The portions are huge! All flavors are delish, but very limited (close to none) options for vegan or lactose free desserts. Sorbet options are not one of the best here...That said, please go ahead and ride the Wonderful saddleback brownie sundae, or strawberry ice cream. And the seasons special (pumpkin) is worth a try!
The food here is so good!! The ice cream sizes are unreal and everything is made in house. I also love their Reubens. The service was excellent too!
Amazing ice creams. We ordered bananas special for a group of 6 and we were merely able to finish, it was that large. The curly fries were good too. Highly recommend this place.
Fentons used to be one of the best places I used to go to years ago. But now it is no longer the same and very much overpriced
I mean, come on. It’s Fentons! Enough said, amirite? 😂Okay okay, seriously though. My entire family is Bay Area born and raised. My dad still talks about stories of taking my mom to Fentons in the earlyyyyy dates WAY back when haha. It cracks me up every time. But it brings me SUCH feels to now do the same with my partner.I’m gonna cut to the chase. Black and Tan. It’s a must-have. My amateur-self didn’t realize you could order it on a boat. Don’t be an amateur like me! Honestly, come for fun, nostalgic fun we’ve all been missing lately.
Im still smiling!! So rich, creamy, smooth ... I had the bing cherry which had big ripe firm being cherries with the pit removed. I got it in a cup and they put about an inch and a half of whipped cream on top of the two scoop serving. It was divine. It may be the best food Ive ever eaten. I dont live close to Fentons or I would be eating there at least once a week, and I guess I just have to exercise about every day because Im sure its very fattening. I live in Modesto about 2 hours from Oakland, but we were in Alameda enjoying the pinball museum, and couldnt resist stopping for this special treat. If you think you like ice cream or even if you think you dont, once you eat this you will know that youve had a taste of the one of the most luxurious ice creams made.Gunthers in Sacramento is up there too. There just arent many places that use top notch ingredients and know how to make ice cream. But if you can find a place that does youll never stop going there. I happen to know that they serve a really great crab salad sandwich on toast at this sentence. so if youre hungry for dinner you can add that to it. I also recommend their caramel sauce. I didnt get it this time because it doesnt really go with cherries but maybe next time Ill get both kinds. Lucky you if youre planning on going there. Mmmm.
Fenton’s Creamery was packed, inside for dine in and a line out the door for ice cream. Despite this, we didn’t even wait 30 minutes for our table and the food was lightning fast. The service was outstanding and shout-out to our server Adrianna! The food and ice cream was all yummy and would definitely recommend!
Good ice cream, odd customer service. Everyone was great until we sat a table to eat, and after a few minutes we were told we’d need to order from their “dine in” menu or leave the table (many were open) despite being customers. Very odd and unappreciated.
Retro vibes and a strong dessert game, just about sum this place up. Warning, the ice cream servings are pretty freakin big, so consider your visit a cheat meal. I was really impressed by the ice cream pie. As a dessert it seemed simple enough at face value, but the many levels of texture from the crust to the topping nuts all contributed to a dish greater than the sum of its parts.
Delicious ice cream! This place has been a bucket list item for me and I finally went on my birthday. Portions were huge and all my kids loved their ice cream choices as well. Dining in was available but we were in and out quickly with the take-out line. Pricey but worth it. Definitely recommend!
Great ice cream shop. Fast service, great staff. At times, a big line. Parking can be busy as well. I usually park somewhere else and walk to Fentons while also shopping.Black and Tan is what get at times.I honestly havent tried the hot foods menu, but they do have some pretty good options.
Servers were nice. Love the hot crispy onion rings. Pumpkin ice cream was a good seasonal flavor.
My family loves Fentons and it was a real treat to have the Fenton Special with 8 scoops of their delicious ice cream with a variety of toppings. It was so big, we had to share it between the 4 of us! Fentons is the best!
Great old style ice cream parlor. Been going there for over 50 years. Food is good but the ice cream is the star.
Mediocre ice cream at best. Had the pistachio and it was large but pricey and didnt taste like pistachios. 😕 The parking situation and waiting in line didnt help the situation.
Great food. Server was great. He gave my baby nephew a free scoop card!
I have to say, I’m sitting on my couch eating THE BEST DANG BLT SANDWICH I’ve ever eaten, no exaggeration. Like, the bacon is perfectly crispy, the tomatoes are fresh and delicious, the breast is toasted perfectly golden brown, there’s perfect quantities of everything— it’s a simple sandwich but it’s really, really yummy! Fentons knocked it out of the park with this one.
Havent been to Piedmont Ave in 32 years and it was wonderful to find Fentons was as good as I remember from my High School days. Great food and amazing ice cream by the scoop. The black and tan is simply the best ever. So happy they are still there.
The food was wonderful and came out quickly and hot but we had some trouble with the hosting staff. They were very rude and disrespectful toward a staff member in our presence. She simply moved our table so we wouldnt get bumped into since my wife was in a wheelchair. Its also not clear that some customers are only in line for ice cream and others are waiting to be seated for a meal. We ended up waiting about 35 minutes to be seated. If I owned this, I would replace the hosting staff period.
Couldnt even remember to take the photo before everyone started to dig in! Fentons will always be a favorite not just because of my bay area bias but because the ice cream is SOOOOO delicious!! Nice little stop after taking the kids to fairyland!
Yummy ice cream with generous portions! The food was good enough, but it seems you really go to Fentons for the ice cream. We spent a lot, but it fulfilled all of the goodness my husband remembers from visiting when he was a kid. They give the kids coloring pages and paper hats and even use apparently original menus or at least the same style. Great service!
This awesome restaurant icon has got something for almost everyone! Since its inception, it has been bringing happiness and delight to all that enters its doors! From crab sandwich to ice cream float, every item menu is made fresh. If you want a real treat, Fentons makes its ice cream right at the restaurant. Go watch as experts mix all the finest quality ingredients to make the best world class ice cream in the world.
Ice cream heres so creamie its my favorite spot, Ive been coming here for ice cream since I was a kid.How ever after the pandemic many new faces and very young ones too Like the young African American lady with curly hair didnt get a chance to get her name was very rude and un patient with taking my big order of ice cream. Perhaps she should consider another job were she doesnt have to deal with lots of people .Fentons Ice cream line is always long, if you know Fentons you know whats to expect on a weekend. Obviously shes not use to big crowds,or probably was having a bad day ..why take it our on customer specially is I greeted her so nicely .Only giving it a 3 start for bad customer service others wise I would it given it a 5star.
If you have a milkshake or ice cream craving then this is the place for you. Prepare for a long wait & for it to be messy once you get it. Their ice cream is naturally very soft.
Ice Cream and Sandwiches/Burgers. Staff is always friendly and food is always delicious. Its such a nice environment that makes it so easy to associate this place with good memories. Fentons is always a treat.
Taste is great. Price on the expensive end.
Very nice old school diner and ice cream parlor. Good assortment of flavors, good service and excellent quality makes this place one to return to!
Whats not to like about rich, creamy and flavorful ice cream, decadent sundaes and great variety of hot and cold sandwiches and salads, all in a setting of a retro Ice Cream Parlour that has served generations of guests. A great selection of ice cream, sorbets and toppings. An awesome place for celebratory groups and families. The crab sandwich on toasted French bread and the Roast Beef with Au jus are two long time favorites of mine that come with tasty fries with great texture or side salad. Old fashioned milk shakes made in the stainless large cup, served frosty in a old fashioned tall milkshake glass with a tall spoon and the remainder in the metal cup. What a delightful place.
Got a tub of Swiss Chip. My whole family loved it so much that, even though its pretty far from me, Ill definitely be back to get more. The line was long when I went but it was absolutely worth the wait.
I’d normally give this place a better review but the last time I came here, one of the guys who worked at the ice cream counter refused to pack my order to go with extra ice in the bag (I live about 45-50 minutes from Fentons). I was shocked because they’ve done this multiple times for me in the past with no issue. It also caused me to question for the first time why I’m paying almost $16 for a half gallon of ice cream when I can get a gallon of Tillamook on sale for under $5. I asked the host at the front if he could assist in getting me extra ice since my drive is long and my expensive half gallon of ice cream would surely be half milkshake by the time I got home, and he did so with no hesitation. I don’t know why the initial server couldn’t help me out, but I’m sure glad the host had the common decency to do so.
I’ve been going here since i was born. I never truly appreciated this place until recently. The quality is always amazing. The service is great, despite the huge crowds. I now live two states away from Oakland, but i’m still craving fentons! Can’t wait to keep the tradition going and visit again.
The avocado burger and curly fries were amazing. Nice and clean spot. Not to mention the ice cream fro dessert. Love this place. Well priced considering the location and fame.
Not sure how I cant rate this institution 5 stars. Nostalgia and making a cameo in Pixars movie Up only add to my love for this place. Great tasting ice cream with generous portion sizes bring a smile to your face. We could quibble over parking and sugars effects on a persons body, but if youre in the mood for an ice cream sundae, then Fentons is the place.
Great Ice Cream 🍨 and food!Started in 1894 and featured in the movie Up.
My fav for ice cream in the entire country. The banana split is simply the best. Been going there since I was a kid when we come to town to visit family.
Ordered via DoorDash. When i arrived, 1/2 the order had been missed. Told me I had to wait 10 minutes. 20 minutes later, i went to ask what was up and my food was on the counter. Sundae melted. No sorry. No make-good.Don’t take online orders if you can’t handle it.
A family favorite and tradition for us for 50 years! Love everything, try the chopped olive sandwich!
The service is always excellent.. ice cream is the best.
We been coming here for at least 35 years. It is always a special treat.Love there banana split
Its hard to be sad when youre at Fentons. Its bright and charming, and I dont think Ive had a better sundae than the Cookie Connection, which is easily shareable between three people. The food is not bad for standard American fare, but the ice cream is the best.
I ordered the fried chicken salad. Grant it that I had some things taken off. I didnt and I missed the cheese, egg and cucumbers. One little cup salad dressing does not cover the salad the minimum shoud be two cups and anything after .50. But overall the salad is delicious.
Seasonal ice cream is cherry vanilla currently, pretty good. Kiddo got a Rocky Road in a waffle cone that looked big enough to share, which I thought was a better value, but he ended up finishing it by himself. Darn!
The burgers were great, but the ice cream was amazing 😍
For what you get, which is A LOT, dessert at this place is worth every penny. All I wanted was a root beer float with a mini scoop of rainbow sherbet and it was TOO MUCH (for me) hahaha I had to tag team it with my brother! Our server was great.. friendly, funny and informative. On my next visit, I promise not to be so full already!
I love the wide variety of ice cream, food, sundaes and more that they offer. We just had lunch in the area so we wanted to try some dessert. I got a single scoop of blueberry cheesecake ice cream. Oh man this was delicious! I am a huge fan of anything blueberry flavored and I love cheesecake so this was the perfect combination for me personally.
First time back since I was 8 and was so happy to return to these amazing flavors, I had strawberry and chocolate marble, amazing combo! So friendly, my husband dropped his cone and they so kindly replaced it for him, wonderful team their at Fentons cant wait to return while we are visiting!
Parking is usually difficult ESPECIALLY when the sun is shining brightly. Pretty crowded for that time of day. I ordered turkey club and wanted to know how they made theirs. Cashier was not sure then a young guy stepped in and answered the question. My side was potatoe salad- I waited 13 minutes only to find out that there was not enough potatoe salad for my order - they gave it to me @ n/c and I ordered another side. That alone was $23. I balked @ the price just to verify that that was correct...it was! When I got home I was pleased with the amount of protein that was piled on great ratio. Needless to say I have good leftovers. Pricey? Yes, but worth it!
Havent been there in couple of years what a wonderful experience
Fenton’s still got it going on. Burger was juicy and the ice cream was fresh.
Nostalgic and fun, a great place to stop for ice cream treats with all sorts of toppings. The place is lively and large enough to accommodate a lot of people. Service was pretty good and friendly. Nice they have their own parking lot, though it’s small so you might not land a space. Sweet potato fries were very good and portion size was generous too.
My family and I have always been treated like family there. Today was no different. The best Ice cream and customer service. They sanged Happy Birthday to me...Never will forget it. Love that place.
Its very very good. Prices are up since 2020, but thats the new thing. Vanilla/ choc marble is Excellent like a sundae.
There like a a high price 6 * ice cream place that is always been great I didnt have a bad experience you guys been high on your ice cream since I was 8 years old I went to Piedmont Elementary but you always had a lot of flavors and great ice cream food is good too and I hope you didnt take it in a bad way sir
We came to Fentons on a bet that Fentons ice cream was better than my fave Baskin Robbins ice cream. Fentons has a very lovely atmosphere! I would dine here anytime! The menu has a great selection of meals that are not overly expensive! Our server could have been more attentive and whether or not the server or the cook got my order wrong, no one asked if our food was okay! Although the situation was what it was a decent tip was still left for our server!BTW, I ordered peanutbutter chocolate ice cream and almond crunch caramel ice cream; that part of my order was wrong too! Nevertheless, I still love, love, love my Baskin Robbins peanutbutter chocolate and pralines and cream ice creams!
The experience here was underwhelming. I was expecting a great place based on the reviews but honestly I can get something that tastes 10 times better from the grocery store for a fraction of the price. For such a “historical” establishment I was expecting fresh, flavorful, homemade ice cream. I got cheap, artificial tasting ice cream that didn’t even taste like the flavor I got (blueberry cheesecake). I also paid $6 for a very small scoop. Definitely not worth the price!
Short story: My family loves Fentons. My dads army buddy and my moms college roommate married each other. The two families have celebrated together for 60 years. The now grandparents meet at Fentons every few months. Well, met. My mom passed away last year, and the three remaining were driven to Fentons by their daughters (now in our 50s).The staff was SO kind, accommodating walkers and wheelchairs, and we had a wonderful visit. Five stars. And then I asked for a dairy free dessert, like sorbet, or a coconut milk option ...Not ONE. Fentons, Ill keep driving my dad to you, and watching everyone eat their luscious sundaes. Please tuck a bucket of something I can eat in a corner of the freezer so that I can love you again!!
Its not what it was if you were here in the eighties but I dont know where else you will find a comparable old time ice cream parlor. Worth a forty mile detour if youre jonesing for a sundae. The sandwiches make it a legitimate lunch spot but thats really not what were here for is it?
Fentons creamery is one of the best places to visit in Oakland. The black and tan with toasted almonds is amazing and the sundaes and shakes are great. The burgers are good and everything wlis well cooked and presented, fries and extras are plentiful. The atmosphere is like a classic ice cream shop and its a nice play to visit with family.
