Love supporting our local neighborhood businesses! I will say some days the produce isn’t as great as others but it’s just fine if you’re cooking the same day. They have an impressive selection for being in the middle of a food desert. Some days the staff is friendlier then other days but overall better than any corporate grocery.
It was a great experience. The staff was awesome and they have good music playing to get you in the groove for shopping
Great grocery store with delicious produce! Love the deli items and organic vegetables, always lovely and welcoming, very happy to have this just down the road. The Hummus is delicious 😋
They have a decent selection compared to the size of the store. They recently rearranged the items, it made better use of the space. They give discounts to local customers. They often give away gift cards. Its the ONLY grocery store in W. Oakland.!! All of the service providers are very polite, always offering their assistance. A lot of the larger grocery stores make it hard to even get help, unless you look for a clerk & ask. Prices maybe a smidge higher, but its a smaller more personal experience. The clerks may not know your name, but they can usually recognize your face.
Great (mostly) organic food sold by friendly people. They have everything one would need regularly and cost is similar to Safeway (but the food is fresher).
From great healthy snacks and drinks to local goods, fruits and vegetables, small place with great product selection, the best is their people, always looking if you need something or just to smile at you.
Always the best fruits and vegetables. Kind, friendly service at reasonable prices. Support this community cooperative.
Nice place to get some healthy groceries. Great customer service and good deals
I love everything about this place! Its got a great selection, including things you probably wont find at a regular grocery. I especially love the flower to fruit products they sell, I buy the perfect papas every time Im there. Not to mention the staff is absolutely amazing!
Great local, employee owned store with unique brands, organic produce and fresh bread!
The best and only spot to get groceries in the lower bottoms. Very friendly staff.
This grocery shop had an incredible variety of items that are at the best prices. We came here without any intention to buy anything but left with three bags. The market is well arranged, and its well equipped for practicality anything. They also have a small eatery in a shop that has delicious food ready to eat there or take away. Worth a visit!
Friendly folks and delicious food. The flowers they get in are fantastic!
Local and international goods are available here at a very affordable price. This shop is also extremely clean, fruits and vegetables are nicely displayed. Employees are nice and always happy to help and assist throughout. A place where you can buy a good quality of products. Thank you!
I looooove this store!! Great staff who are friendly and awesome! They have great healthy items and a wonderful selection. I love going here for my healthy shopping, veggie items, and even organic foods!
I really like the structure of the cooperative model. Its a grocery store based on the workers all working and coowning together and supplying health conscious food for the community
We came to this grocery shop yesterday to purchase our basic needs and our household. The shop was well-organized and wont run out of stock. We almost do our groceries here every week and not once they had run out of stock with their products. They also had the most friendly and helpful staff!
Definitely someone not to go
Love Mandela’s and the hard working crew here. I’ll drive out if my way to buy groceries from them bc they care. I prefer giving my money to farmers vs big box tyrants.
If I lived in Oakland (I live in LA) I would shop here only!
In the store, you’ll find fresh, pesticide-free produce, high-quality meats, hormone-free eggs and dairy, local bread and a growing sundries department with natural and high-quality locally-made beauty and wellness products.
Employee owned, local, ethically conscious organic market.
Great place
Great community oriented space. Serving and making an impact through the food they provide.
LUV their salmon cakes & their roasted veggies are yummy Great food, friendly service and reasonable prices plus EBT SNAP discounts. Great selection, awesome produce and friendly staff
Expensive but top quality all around
The essential oils, the seamoss, organic beans and lentils, fresh produce and healthy healing foods... All worth the trip.
May not have the largest selection, but has the essentials as well as niche items for any diet. The organic produce is great and less expensive then whole foods. Plus you got to feel good about helping out Oakland. For sure coming back here more. Service is great.
Beautiful selection, thoughtful staff, and organized accessible store. You can buy meats and veggie imitations here, but most affordable are their bulk items and produce.
Quality foods at reasonable rates. Well maintained and courteous staff. They sell variety of products at attractive rate. This is opposite to Megabus bus stop. You can have a quick bite or drinks while bus is boarding passengers. This is not an upscale place but they have made sure that store is well maintained and clean. Visit this store once and see how different this is from other stores.
Great organic section
Great neighborhood store pickup a watermelon 🍉 feed all the kids on the block there huge.
Great store, I only suggest there are as a majority more Black-owned food and non-food products.
The go-to place in West Oakland for the freshest organic selections and quality products. One of my favorite places to shop and enjoy a coffee at the tables in front of the store.
Didnt get followed around, staff was helpful, produce was fresh, and reasonably priced.
Very welcoming and friendly place with great deals.
All ways professional.
Great selection, awesome produce and friendly staff
I love this coop. The workers there are super cool and helpful. The store is small but they are expanding! Theyll be taking over the old 99 cent store space a couple doors down. I cant wait because Im sure theyll selection will grow and theyll offer more foods there. But in the meantime this is a great like grocery store to pick up health conscious products.
Dope grocery and local owned! Small spot but has tons of great and fresh options.
Cute store that carries most basics you would need for cooking. Meat items are on the pricey side but produce is very reasonable
Best grocer in the Bay Area. Small, local, co-op based.
Good place to find everything you might need.
Neighborhood food cooperative in West Oakland, across from West Oakland BART station. Conveniently located, small parking lot in back of store, street parking out front. Friendly, knowledgeable personnel. Small deli inside offered limited menu of sandwiches, drinks, only one veggie sandwich made vegan on request. Organic locally sourced produce, locally sourced bakery and packaged goods, many vegan and natural food items. Also environmentally friendly cleaning products, personal care products. Moderate prices.
A market created for all the right reasons and the the chicken kale orzo soup we had from the deli today was amazing!!
Great bulk food, however, does not have the largest selection.
I live this spot. The folks who run this store are helpful, always friendly and I’m proud to see them run this store. Spend your money where it counts and support this business. The food is good, real food and if your a vegan or veggie this is the spot.
Support local business.
Great neighborhood grocery store with excellent choice of local/organic/fair trade goods and super friendly staff!
What an amazingly great and wonderful experience and resource... So glad you are still open
This place has great produce and the staff are very friendly. By far the best (and maybe the only) option for produce in West Oakland. The prices can be pretty high on some items, but the quality is really good.
Love this spot and the people. packaged stuff might be a dollar or two more but its all good quality. best deal for local and organic produce, and they always let you know on social media when there are sales on bagged up produce. theyve really got you in mind there.
Mandela foods is the best grocery store ever. Their range of products go from basic things to very hard to find products, their range of beverages are out of this world. What i like the most about it is that they always take in consideration what the customer thinks and/or wants. A very community driven place with awesome folks 24/7
So nice to put my $$ into the community. ALSO half off on produce when paying wit EBT! love the hand-made au coutre mon such as deodorant, lotion, chapsticks, etc. the locally made sorbet & ice cream is soo good (dairy & non-dairy)! my other favorite items are the cinnamon buns + muffins;)
We were visiting SF and decided to Airbnb in Oakland (cheaper). We were pleasantly surprised by Mandelas food coop. The produces are fresh and the staff is nice. I also understand that the coop has been around for 10 years. Congratulations! I hope people will gradually understand that organic food is inexpensive on the long term given the health benefits!
Competitive prices. friendly staff. Good selection for its size
One of the few options for fresh vegetables & whole grains, some natural foods (not a huge supply) in West Oakland.
I love this co op store!!! All the staff are owners into the grocery co op......all neighborhoods should a store like this.....
Always a smile and greeting when I walk in. Awesome customer service, fresh produce and vegan options.
A bit small currently but with a big heart. Looking forward to their future expansion. Great having them in the neighborhood for healthful food & groceries.
Every time I go in Mandela they are continually growing and evolving. Prior to Mandela there was no grocery stores on Westside, small community oriented place with amazing local produce, super friendly staff. Support local biz and help your neighbors at the same time, conveniently located in front West Oak Bart.
The freshest produce, and the very very best friendly staff. I love this place.
Love this store!! Friendly employees and customers. Very healthy hot food and quality groceries!! Stop in give em a try you wont b disappointed.
Awesome resource for the area! Pasture raised eggs, Claravale raw milk, and local organic produce.
The variety of food in unmatched in the Oakland area. The greatest benefit is the customer service, very positive, intelligent and kind employees. In order to appreciate this store requires an understanding of the multitude of benefits that a Food Cooperative provides.
Great ideas and social community spot..lots of organic treats and food.. real rooted in the community and social responsibility..
Great little co-op near the BART station. A very neighborhood feel. The produce leaves something to be desired, but there are often specialty foods available.
The absolute nicest workers and great variety of quality products and fair prices.
Great food, friendly service and reasonable prices plus EBT SNAP discounts. WOUNDERFUL!!;)-
Great local co-op, which has served the neighborhood for years. Its a bit pricey - but its employee owned, stocks local, organic, and eco-friendly items, as well as fresh produce and baked goods.
Has everything you need! And like 99% of it is organic
They always have what I need. Their staff is so helpful and services incredibly great.
I love people at Mandelas. Very nice, helpful. Health n natural foods
Good service.
Great organic foods from many local cooperative businesses!
The best.
The formula for why this store doesnt work is simple:The selection is inconsistent. They do not carry the basic items that most grocery stores carry. So simply put, if I go in here with a small shopping list and this location is lacking ONE OR MORE items; Then Im forced to make a trip to a larger store and therefore have NO REASON to buy ANY of the items here, because the prices are so extraordinarily High( higher than any Whole Foods on a bad day)So I know in my head, if Im left with ONE reason to go elsewhere, then I might as well wait and get ALL my items elsewhere.I like the idea of having a grocery store in my neighborhood. But the selection in here is just odd! It seems more of a showcase for the owners likes rather than a representation of the community. The bulk/bin items that have been sitting in the window and in direct sunlight are usually stale or outdated. They have no idea how to store their produce overnight. The produce in the store is pitiful, dried out, rotten and unappealing.I make six figures a year and plus a great deal of money off of rental income. Im one of the lucky ones where the cost of things is insignificant to me.But even people with money dont like to be taken advantage of. There is a fine line between price gouging and that gouging being insulting.I feel insulted every time Im asked to overpay on an item I know I can get elsewhere. The staff all walk around glazed over. The owners do not live in this neighborhood and therefore they are not a good representation of this community. The weekend hours leave a lot to be desired. Every Saturday and Sunday morning I see a consistent number of people show up an hour or so before opening only to look at the store window hours and their watch and drive away to another store.I really want to like this place. Seems like its a no-brainer you could make more money off of volume rather than higher prices, carrying the basic items that most people go to the grocery store for, all the time. Carry items that more represents the community instead of your personal interest. Find a way to invest in Practical hours for the weekend! However theres a new grocery store opening up a few blocks away this fall! maybe that will cause these people to get their act together and realize that with competition; theyre going to have to actually work a days work in their lives instead of just coasting by standing at the cash register listening to music from the motherland.
Items are relatively expensive, staff is not unfriendly but also not very friendly and the assortiment is not that big. The place itself also doesnt look the cleanest.
My favorite market in the city. Worker-owned, great selection of healthy food and non toxic household goods. I miss living right up the street from them.
I love this place! Im so glad they are near my location. They have everything I need. Thank you guys for having this type of grocery store in our neighborhood.
I love Mandela Foods, they treat folks like family, and the service is exceptional. Plus they have all the vegan and organic goods on deck!
Great store! Lots of local and organic goods. I love this market.
Great staff and great selection! Way better the whole foods!
Great programs to promote community health, including produce discounts; good selection and wonderful example of co-operative economics, ownership and community engagement.
My go-to store when I need fresh veg
First grocery store l visited when l moved to West OaklandFriendly and great selections. Recommend.
Love supporting this worker owned grocery store. They have locally grown produce and pre-made foods, and their staff is very friendly.
If price is the most important thing to you than go to walmart!! This is a worker owned coop: workers earn a living wage and if the company is successful, they are successful. If you want more CRAPitalism just go to Whole Paycheck and ensure Jeff Bezos has some money to fly into space when you cant breathe this air no more. If you want a better environment, working class that is cared for, more community investment, go here.to the managers: thank you for the vegan selections, you seem to be doing an above average job. Hoping that you take into consideration in the new store: animal oppression is real - dont buy into the humane myth, murder ≠ humane. Animals want to live and we definitely dont need to exploit their bodies to be healthy.
For as small a market as it is, I find most everything I need. I am stoked to be able to support a local business that truly serves a need in the community I live in. Great produce and reasonably priced.
Clean, friendly and most organic produce, some frozen/dairy is half off ALWAYS when on foodstamps
Small but high quality selection of natural foods.
Great community based store with healthy organic foods and friendly employees!
Great services, good prices convinent location
