Due to some unforeseen schedule conflicts (being out of town and trying to coordinate a repair, etc) I couldnt get my guitar into their shop. Being unable to share the work experience, what I can say is that Wood St was super responsive and helpful via emails. They even shared thoughts on related travel questions I had. Ive had very mixed results with guitar techs over the years, and flags I look for are customer care and attention to detail (I.E. taking the time to be helpful to every prospective client). Very down-to-earth--I plan on meeting up with them in-person when things allow!
These folks are knowledgeable, patient and low pressure. If necessary, and you make an appointment, they will turn around simple set-ups and repairs in 24 hours. I dare you to to find more experienced, more professional instrument repair people.
I needed a setup on a Martin guitar and found Wood Street online. I have now found my forever guitar shop! The work on the Martin was masterful; its playing perfectly - and Lewis took time to discuss the condition of the guitar and what to watch for. I also had an Eastman semi-hollow body set up - it is playing better than I thought it could. These guys are great and if youre serious about the quality and sustainability of your axe you need to visit them.
Wood Street Guitars were super responsive when I reached out about some work on my Strat. It needed a pre-wired pickguard installed, because the model I have didnt have a ground wire set-up. When I brought it in, the gent looked it over, said, Cool, should take me 20 minutes. Let me tell you, it was shorter than that. I came back after a walk and heard it playing sweetly! He put on a fresh set of strings, and the whole thing was super affordable. I cannot recommend Wood Street Guitar Repair enough! Their work is top quality.
I brought in my 1933 Martin R18 with a cracked x brace and top, and a collapsed bridge. I was concerned that a repair to the bridge would look odd and new on a vintage Martin, but Wood St went above and beyond with the repairs. The bridge looks original, my archtop plays beautifully, and they even fixed my cases handle! Such a great experience.
Great guys doing quality work. Unrivaled neck resets.
My tech, Tomm, was able to accomplish the most difficult repair that my guitar could require. He did it with aplomb and at such a reasonable price it seemed like it was a dream. Dont hesitate to get Wood Street to work on any instrument you can imagine...you will not be disappointed!
Great staff, very professional and friendly, you wont be disappointed
A great customer experience! Brought in my acoustic and they walked me through the whole process, taught me about the repair and answered every question. Outcome was high quality work and they gave me a complimentary adjustment after a few weeks when my action increased. Brought it in, and they did it on the spot. Thanks guys!
I recently had complete refurb of my 1969 Martin D 18 (neck reset, re-fret, pickup install, etc.) The guitar sounds amazing, looks great, and the action is better than new. If anyone needs work done on their precious vintage instrument, these are the guys.
The guys at Wood are among the highest echelon of guitar techs youll come across. Tomm has been working on my basses for almost a decade and I would follow him across country if necessary to have his expert touch. He recently did a minor setup and tweak to my custom 4-string bass for a very competitive rate, which other techs tend to usually under setup or not get it exactly right. Tomm literally gets the bass to play the same way it did when the luthier who built the bass for me handed it to me on day 1. If having experts work on your guitar isnt enough, the team at Wood are straight up professionals. Theyre also good people and you dont get the seedy, ego, long backlog or pretension that sometimes comes along with the other repair shops you walk into. Seriously, if youre within the Bay Area, you shouldnt go anywhere else but here.
I brought in my Martin, I thought it needed a neck reset. Come to find out its a bolt-on neck and it was missing the bolt. The guys put a bolt in, no charge. Great customer service, they earned my loyalty
High level of craftsmanship on my ol Gretsch cat eyeRepair. It Plays well. The binding on the neck was replaced and they somehow made it look old and original. Highly recommended personal service an plenty pf parking
Wood Street are my go-to for anything bass or guitar related. Jake has been stellar and done amazing work on several of my instruments. Theyve done everything from cleaning and straightening out a filthy precision bass, carefully drilling and installing a mastery tremolo system, refretting an aluminum neck bass, pickup switch-outs you name it. Also zero attitude, these guys are just stoked to do the work and the love of their craft has shown through on every job I have given them. I cant recommend these folks any more highly.
The volume control on my Telecaster gave out, and I figured I’d have to leave it with a shop for a week or more. Then I called these guys. Tomm told me he could see me that day and fix the guitar in 15 minutes. That’s exactly what happened. I placed my guitar in the gate (observing social distancing) and went back to my car. About 10 minutes later he called saying it was done, and followed up with some helpful advice for getting the best sound out of my guitar. Highly recommended.UPDATE: six months later, I purchased a new guitar, which needed some modifications and a setup. They did an excellent job keeping track of all the particular requests, without a lot of additional charges. When I brought it back in need of an adjustment and a different set of strings, they included the installation in the follow-up service instead of charging me for another setup. I am really impressed with the work they did, and the attention to detail.
Highly recommended! Lewis took my previously difficult-to-play Eastman mandolin and Seagull guitar and set them up beautifully. Ill definitely be returning to Wood Street for future setup and repair work (hopefully with a nicer instrument someday), and will continue to send my musician friends their way.
I have trusted Lewis Santer with my precious mandolin for many years now. He is brilliant at set-up work, knowledgeable and sensitive to the needs and preferences of the player. I send all my students to him as well, and they are always amazed at the differences in the tone and playability of their instruments!
These folks do great work and have a wealth of experience, they are great at knowing what a player wants out of their guitar. They got me a guitar I wanted to use for some upcoming gigs in time. The website interface is great.
Lewis knows vintage Martin guitars, understands their history, and treats them with respect while simultaneously bringing them into top performing condition. I trust him implicitly-- always does careful, quality work.
I made an appointment because I thought I needed fretwork and a new nut on my stratocaster. Tomm met me at the door and took a look at my guitar and quickly realized that a truss rod adjustment was probably needed. He did not try to sell me on anything else.I greatly appreciated Tomms customer service with his professional demeanor and quick assessment of my needs.I adjusted the truss rod myself :) Thanks Tomm!!!
I am very pleased with the attention to detail to my Strat, The folks at Wood Street treated me like a Rock Star! I am going to have all my guitars worked on at this most excellent shop!!!!!
I took my parlor guitar into Wood Street Guitar Repair for a pickup install, which was a little bit more complicated because of the type of pickup. I initially sent them an email asking if they could do it and got a very prompt reply. I then used their online system to set up and appointment, which worked really well, with a prompt confirmation of the appointment. I met with Lewis and we talked through whether this was the right pickup for my guitar and what installing it entailed. I found Lewis to be very knowledgeable and we agreed to have him get the pickup, install it and do a setup on my guitar as well, all for a very reasonable price. He was able to do the work in less than a week. I was notified that the work was done an Saturday and was able to use their online system to set up an appointment to pick up the guitar on Sunday. Very nice that they are open on Sunday!! Lewis was not able to make the appointment but Tomm was able to be there to do the finale fine tuning of the pickup. I got and email with the invoice before I even left their shop. Their online appointment system, email communications and billing system worked simply, promptly and accurately, nice! Most importantly they did excellent work and were very attentive to what I wanted. The setup was excellent and definitely improved the action on my guitar, its playing better than ever. Im glad I was able to meet and work with both Lewis and Tomm, they are both excellent at what they do and this is very important - they are both really nice guys! It was a pleasure to meet and work with both of them. So, bottom line I highly recommend Wood Street Guitar repair. If you need work done on your guitar this is the place to go.Cheers,Jeffrey C.
ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCHLewis Santer did major overhauls on two historic instruments and several other large repairs for me over the years. His work is always superb. Im very finicky about sound and set-up and would be most luthiers nightmare client. He never fails to listen to my concerns and always manages to get perfect results. After playing guitar for 65+ years, Ive finally found the best luthier Ive ever known.
Great local repair place!
Tomm has been my go-to guitar tech for years now. He started working on my gear when he was at SF Guitar Works, then while he was working out of his home, and now at Wood St. The quality of his work, attention to detail, turnaround times, and his prices are unparalleled. Ive paid more in the past, but Ive never gotten more for my money. At this point I cant imagine trusting anyone else with my gear. And I LOVE having Tomm and Lewis in the East Bay now -- no more driving to SF and parking in Potrero!
