Lots of interesting items to purchase. People are very good. Prices are a little high.
You have Got to Shop here!! I have been a shopper at the Cedar Chest for years - LOVE this place and the amazing finds here are so cool. This is not a quick visit store as you need time to look in all the nooks and crannies for that special item. The pricing is fantastic - I love getting a bargain and this place always has great price on all my favorite brands. I never leave without finding something for either my closet to wear or my house to decorate. I love to flip furniture products and the Cedar Chest always has something for me to turn into a cool item in my house. The staff is always helpful and pleasant. If you love consignment and resale shopping then this is the place to go for sure - bring a friend and make a day of it - you wont regret it.
I went in this store on June 3rd, 2020, at approximately 4:17 p.m. I felt affronted upon arriving because there was a sign up on the front door (see attached photo) stating, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THERE WILL BE AN ADDITIONAL 4% CHARGE ON CREDIT & DEBIT CARD PURCHASES.”I was interested in buying an item at the store ($125), and when I spoke with the sales clerk, he confirmed that I would be charged an additional fee if I used my credit card. When I pulled out my phone and showed him the Connecticut government web site showing that the stores behavior was illegal (see: Connecticut General Statutes § 42-133ff), he replied saying that several other businesses in Old Saybrook are also charging this 4% fee. He mentioned that a liquor store nearby was also doing it.This is called the bandwagon fallacy. Just because some people you know are doing something, that doesnt suddenly make it legal. (e.g. If 3 of your friends are selling cocaine, that doesnt make it legal for you to sell cocaine. It just means that all four of you are breaking the law. Youre just deluding yourself because of the bandwagon effect.)Anyway, I didnt buy anything from the store on principle, and when I got home, I reported it to the state Attorney General. It mustve taken them half a year to process my request, because I just got a letter in the mail from the business owner, who tried to gaslight me (see attached photo; email appeared private, so I redacted it). The owner claims that there is no such sign, and also that I was upset about not receiving a discount when I was shopping.I have no doubt that the store likely took down and replaced their signs after my complaints. There is a loophole in the state law, and I would not be at all surprised if they are now taking advantage of it. But as you can see from my photo, I have proof that they were violating state law as of that day in June -- and probably for weeks before and afterward.Im rather shocked that the business owner went out of her way to contact me, trying to make me out to be a liar. So, Im contacting the AG again, and also Visa and Mastercard, and heres my review, urging other folks like you to avoid supporting businesses like this.
I have been to the cedar chest in old Saybrook on numerous occasions and I’ve been very pleased with what they have. Their prices are great their selection is wonderful and the help is really really nice And totally professional. I would be very sad to see if they had to close their doors so if they told me there was a cash discount I would be fine with that. It saddens me dearly that someone will try to take away myFavorite store’s phenomenal reputation.
Our family has shopped and consigned here since they first opened in Old Saybrook...Wonderful staff, wonderful selection for anyone and everyone. As for Nancy Briggs, the owner, she is polite, smart and a very hard worker and the above review really doesnt truly reflect this business. If you havent shopped here, try it..It is a small business that deserves our support...It is almost Christmas time and the store is full of wonders
Love this place for vintage deals
Very clean and organized. Friendly customer service
I have been a consignor for a very long time and I enjoy the conversations that I often get involved with when I am there with the owner or any other employee that works there. They have the latest fashions and they sell quality items which makes it worth the trip.Happy shopping!Nitza
My husband and I love shopping here and have no problem helping them stay in business by paying 4% extra if we use our credit cards. The owner is always very helpful and has great specials. We dont want her to raise her prices because it will be much higher than 4%If we dont want to pay the extra money we will bring cash.I hope you stay in business and get through this pandemic because you would be missed otherwise.
I have known Nancy Briggs for over ten years and have found her to be very ethicalYes, I did see that sign back in June and I also saw that she took it down within a weekNancy gives you a discount for using cash which is legal in the state of ConnecticutShe is just trying to stay afloat like the majority of business owners in this state during this pandemicIf you don’t like her policies don’t shop there, instead you are trying to ruin the business of a very hard working individual that only wants to stay openFind something better to do with your time Scrooge!!!
Was excited to visit my favorite resale shop this morning. Always great, high quality merchandise. Disappointed as I approached the store and noticed the sign indicating 4% surcharge for using a credit card. First, I havent used cash since Covid 19 started because cash goes through too many hands. Second, the surcharge the credit card companies charge is a cost of doing business. Either raise the prices to include the surcharge or stop accepting credit cards if you cant absorb the charge.
The selection and prices are amazing, I never leave there empty handed!
Fun place to shop around. They get really nice furniture at good prices for used. If I lived in Ct. I would furnish my place from there.
My wife went here a few days ago to bring some things to this consignment shop and the lady refused to accept them saying they dont take donations after 4 PM, it was 4:30.... I dont understand how a business that survives off of people volunteering to bring things in to them to sell so they can stay in business would turn away a donation?? They are open till 7 PM, so its not like she was coming in at the last minute either ... The staff was very rude to her and I would strongly advise that you avoid shopping here or trying to donate anything, until they can provide a better experience to their customers this place should be a place to avoid.
I brought in beautiful, high end items. They accepted several but refused 2 lovely new quilted cotton handbags that had never been used, saying they smelled like mothballs. I nor anything I own has ever been NEAR a mothball! Meanwhile, their whole store smells something like moth balls. Nasty oder. The staff (everyone IVE dealt with) is cranky, impatient and seemingly hate their jobs. Nice AC tho.
It was a first time I went into this place I bought a really nice dresser and I feel like I got a great deal cuz its all Hardwood and it was just over $100
Excellent prices. Always fun things to find. Great consignment store. Clothes, jewelry and furniture!
I got a pair of Bear Paw boots for $ 13. at Cedar Chest III; I went home and looked online and discovered that this particular style normally sells for between $ 100 and over $ 200. new....the pair I bought seemed hardly worn. I went back again and got a (again, hardly worn) Loft shirt for $ 4., and a St. Johns Bay shirt for $ 3. Im impressed with this place!!!
Awesome! Found the perfect dress and 20% off coupon.
It is OK, this area has a plethora of antique shops and stores. All are the same and all probably barter over used items, and bid on estate auctions, storage, etc. Its always a toss up on product because it rotates, most if not all of the products are over priced items labeled as antiques but most are just used consumer commodities that might be an antique, or hold future value, but make sure you do your research and haggle on price, if you can.To me these antique shops are just glorified pawn shops, not necessarily a bad thing but what I feel is true. Its a consumer mindset, but at least this store seems well organized and has decent product. Equal or greater than 4x cost rule seems to be used here but if it sits for a while they drop the price down, not much at all but some. Also make sure you heed the warnings, no sitting on the furniture, it feels like its ran by my grandma and does not seem kid friendly. Glorified consignment, over priced, no sitting, clean, organized, pawn sho... sorry, I mean, antique shop.
Update: Feb 2020: Nancy and her team continue to accept items that will give clients who consign their best potential for return $$$. It only makes sense that request only clean and quality clothing, furniture and household items . Dozens of years in business, both in multiple hi-traffic Shoreline locations and on-line, increases % share for sellers and buyers reap top labels for so much less- FAIR MARKET value, all around.
Great Purses MIchael Kor, Coach
Good sales, nice variety of styles and prices. Friendly staff..
They have quality control issues in both this store and in clinton. A dress for 35.00/with a ink stain?? They have a good selection but you really have to scrutinize the clothing before purchasing ...Ive had to throw out a few items after purchase because I noticed something when I got home but failed to notice at the store.
Dont consign there, they will take you items and at the end you wont get money nor the items, this practice should be illegal .
The staff is always friendly, great selection at great bargain prices,
Great variety, good quality all at reasonable prices.
Way too expensive!!!
Thanks to staff who give followers a video tour.
Too expensive.
Nice shop but expensive for used items.
Awesome place..
Eclectic - fun to visit.
I found tons of quality clothes! I have to say the staff was a bit different!
