I ordered chocolate chip bagels after the 16th store said they dont have them after they sent me a text saying my order is ready. I successfully picked them up and returned home, but then I noticed that all three bagels had blue spots on them. I immediately sent a message via the Spread Bagelry website. A customer service representative called me and said, We dont believe its mold. He asked me to send a photo of the bagels to the same number. I sent a photo, and I didnt get a response for over an hour. When I finally called him back, he agreed that the photo showed mold on the bagels. He indicated that the money for this second purchase ($6.00) would be refunded the next day, along with the refund for my first purchase at the 16th store. But until I wrote to them 2 weeks later, they never sent me a refund. After I wrote to the company, they said it wasnt a mold and gave me my money back. Just awful management.
Waited an hour and a half for my order just to get the wrong order that was cold. You guys really need to organize yourselves with a better system. Doesn’t matter how many employees you have or not- just get a better system. You shouldn’t have to offer refunds to people who have been waiting over an hour for food. You’re losing money and business since this hasn’t been a isolated occasion.
Best bagels you will have ever had outside of New York....if youre willing to wait an hour and a half for your order.
When they can actually fill your order, the bagels are pretty good, I’d say 6/10, but almost every time I’ve ordered recently, they weren’t able to fill my order based on being out of stock of one ingredient or the other, and I wasn’t notified until an hour or more after placing my order and making the trip to pick it up. The staff is always pleasant and super busy, not their fault. I hope they can work this out.
Bagels are good, but be prepared for a slow service. Ordered online, told to pick up 20 minutes later, 50 minutes later my order wasnt prepared yet, no alerts or anything. Then served the wrong order!! Awful.
The one downside is they don’t have the variety of bagels many other spots have. However, I got the pizza bagel and it was really good. Napkins and knife in the bag made it convenient. They are very high paced so don’t be surprised if you feel rushed when you are looking what to order.I’m giving a 5 star even though there’s a few things they can improve, my order was great.
I’ve been a regular here for over two years. At their best, they make good bagels and bagel sandwiches. Unfortunately, they are consistently understaffed and this leads to a host of problems. They do not pick up the phone for phone orders regularly. Today I tried to order in the store and was told they are taking “online orders only”. Really??? I am standing there with money in hand and am told to order online. This place needs to hire more people or to pick up the pace to keep our business.
Great food, really friendly staff, and legit bagels. Spread bagels was a very welcome breakfast experience
I really love the bagels here, but I know the are some problems with the running of this bagelry. So about the bagels first, they are Montreal style meaning that they are a little sweeter than NYC bagels and while theyre boiled first they are baked in a wood fired oven rather than a regular oven. The cream cheeses and sandwiches they make here are excellent. That being said the staff can be rather gruff and sometimes downright rude and Ive heard the game been some management issues, but cant fault the place on their bagels.
Not sure if it’s door dash or the store that messed up my order completely. If you don’t have avocado toast, then please call me and I’ll change my order. Don’t have the door dash rider (who took an hour to deliver) deliver my food and tell me I have to call the store to figure out my avocado toast. Then when I look at my order, 75% of my order is missing. I ordered 9 items. Only 3 arrived. Also, when I called the store, it cut me off and ended my call when I requested to speak to someone in the store to fix my order. Now I’m Hangry.
Such a bad experience unfortunately. Never got our order that we paid for - and it was NOT cheap - and never got refunded for it. Im most frustrated by the way management handled this (he claimed they never charged my card yet I have my bank statement in front of me that clearly lists the charge from Spread Bagelry ). When I told my friend who used to frequent this place, she told me she had a similar experience which is why she stopped going. Wish I knew beforehand. I cant speak negatively about the food or the in-store employees but certainly dont appreciate the way the situation with my credit card was handled as it was quite unprofessional/concerning and never resolved by them.
Just order a bagel (the cure) a week ago on Tuesday it was delicious. Yet I just order a bagel today and I had to Wait 40 minutes outside and the bagel was burnt it was crunching in my mouth, hard to bite. Will never order again, the inconsistency.
Horrifying order experience. Get a phone number and be polite to the Door Dash workers. You should be disgusted with yourselves as a business.
Abysmal customer service. We ordered a two bagels for pick up on Ritual, and it gave us a 40-minute wait time. We know they can be slow, so we showed up 5 minutes after the pick up time to see that they hadn’t even started yet.The bagels are good but not worth the trouble to actually get them.
Placed an order - and had to wait about an hour for the order. It arrived without the $6 in drinks - and both of our bagels were messed up! My husband didn’t have the bacon he ordered and it’s not a rye bagel - Mine had spinach which I didn’t order and was so sloppy. The paper was melted into my sandwich- I tried to call but there was no answer
Food is absolutely awesome I just love their bagels. And everyone knows bread makes the sandwich. Staff is super friendly. Everyone knows how great it is because today it was a 45 minutes to an hour long wait.
Terrible. 25 minute walk and i knew they were busy so i got there 10 minutes after they told me it’d be ready. then i get there and it’s still ANOTHER 20 so i canceled. hour later and i’m sweaty with no food. go to knead bagels instead, they’re much better
First time there and definitely loved it
They offer a vast range of fresh food. I loved eating here. Employees are always helpful, prices are fair and the place is always kept clean.
Regular spot for excellent Montréal style bagels and yummy bagel sandwiches. Very nice server took order and got complicated order perfect.
My bagel was thrown together don’t go here, better place are everywhere
I will never ever step foot in that place again!Poor service like no other, they just dont care about their customers.Highly priced, long line, average bagel just doesnt make sense...
Bagels sandwiches are phenomenal and Im not even a huge fan of bagels tbh
Waited almost 2hrs for a bagel that was made wrong. Super rude employees too. Wouldn’t recommend this location.
Really good lox here. the bacon is quite tasty too
While the bagels are good, the attention to detail is always subpar at best. Today, I ordered two bagel sandwiches, a half dozen bagels, and a container of cream cheese. When I got my order home, I found that both sandwiches were wrong and they forgot to include the cream cheese. This is not an uncommon occurence at this Spread location. I consider myself lucky when the sandwiches I order *are* made correctly as its typically a 50/50 shot whether they feel like reading your order when they make it or just make what they feel like.Check your order carefully before leaving.
I can honestly say I dont think Ive ever had a bagel this good before in my life!! You will not regret it one bit if you try this place.
Quality has been going down hill here and at every spread. Bagels are great but the breakfast sandwiches have been lackluster and mostly cheese. Ask for some spinach you’ll get a couple but that’s it.
Always friendly staff and interesting people to visit with. Always good eats!!
Lost my order, took 50 minutes for a bagel. Will not return
One of the most delicious bagels in Philadelphia and probably the whole state! Make sure you try the salmon everything bagel if you’re into salmon. Add onions as well to give it a “yummy” taste. They also serve fresh orange juice so you’ll enjoy a full healthy affordable breakfast
Pros: Great everything bagel, great scallion cream cheese. Easy online ordering with Apple Pay support.Cons: Not the best value (~$5 for bagel + cream cheese), loooong wait time with no order completion text (which could easily be corrected!)Note to ownership: you need to implement order completion texts! You shouldnt rely on people waiting around for their name to be called or their order to be placed on the table. The amount of people concentrated on the sidewalk is both inconvenient to walkers and people with strollers, and its a public health issue during these times. Allow people to walk around the city, and notify them of their complete order via text!
This is a wonderful place to meet for a snack or a light meal. It is cozy and subdued, with very friendly and helpful staff. I think they have the best bagels, and the best variety of specialty spreads in Philly!
Im a doordash driver and this location is very bad with not putting everything in the order. Customer order bagels and cream cheese and got no cream cheese. Why would anyone want bagels without cream cheese?I tried calling to talk to a manager and no answer. Just all around stupidity going on here. Really awful.
Very tasty but can get pricey in a hurry
These are the BEST bagels you will ever eat. They make them in a wood burning oven so the taste is truly unique. If you go on a Saturday or Sunday theres usually a line that goes out the door, but its worth the wait.
Good food but second day in a row they got my order wrong. They gave me a cheaper bagel sandwich than the one they charged me for and they don’t answer the phone.
Staying in Rittenhouse and was looking around for a bagel. This place came up and I wasn’t disappointed. As soon as I walked in the the cashier was very friendly and helped me quickly. I had a nova scramble on an everything bagel and one to everything to go. It was around $13. Pretty good and solid. Would go back.
Food is okay but not worth the price and more importantly, the wait and the ATTITUDE from the girl working the door. The owners of this establishment would benefit from better efficiency and a way more pleasant girl working the front door.
Try the hot sauce!!! Delicious bagels and great toppings - dont be afraid to mix and match from the toppings from their named menu items to make your own perfect sandwich! I like spinach, egg and tomato on my everything bagel and the happily accommodate my special selection. And there isnt a crazy up charge for ordering specific toppings. Arrive early (before 9AM) or prepare to wait in a line that goes outside the door.
Best bagel place in Philadelphia!
Spread too thinI ordered bagels yesterday for pickup today. I arrived only to find out that they ran out of bagels and my order was nonexistent. A bigger slap in the face...orders placed TODAY were filled. Bad job, Spread. Very disappointed
Amazing bagels here! Love that the bagels are so fresh that they are still hot when they serve you. These are hands down the best bagels in Philly. The Standard is a nice hearty breakfast sandwich. The staff is very nice. Our order was served super fast, we got our food almost immediately. Love that they have espresso drinks and milk alternatives: soy milk. What makes Spread different is the freshness: the hot bagels are just coming out of that wood fire oven. There is nothing better in the world than a steaming hot freshly baked bagel. Yum! I’d eat here again and again. I would definitely recommend Spread Bagel to all my friends and family.
Waited over an hour for two overpriced subpar bagels. The service was horrible and there are infinitely better bagels right down the street.
When I arrived to order, they immediately halted the kitchen for ten minutes so they could catch up on orders. I bought an iced coffee at their suggestion thinking it would be quick, but when they finally started the ordering process back up 15 minutes later, they informed me it would be a 20 minute wait for a plain bagel. When I asked that my $4 coffee be comped (I wouldn’t have bought it if I knew it would be a 30 minute wait for a plain bagel), they refused. Avoid.
Best bagels in Philly! But not quite up to New York standards.
Montreal style bagels are done in a wood oven so theyre sweeter and denser than New York style. Spread has a great assortment of spreads and bagel flavors. Wish they had pumpernickel.
After years of enjoying Montreal-style bagels at Spread, we visited Montreal on vacation. We visited both of the famous bagelries there and thought that neither was quite as good as Spread! Believe it or not, the lines were shorter at Spread too 🤣
This place is ridiculous, they can’t even list the right hours on google maps. Does not close at 4 pm, sign in the window says they close at 3 pm, yet I’m here before 3 and still closed. Just rode all the way across the city for absolutely nothing. Never again.
Boutique wood oven bagels. These are probably the best bagels south of New York but they are not your New York bagel. If you know Fairmount (or others) in Montreal then you know these are a little sweeter. The sandwiches are top notch too. It is a little pricey but that is more a knock on the atmosphere than the food.
The good: the bagels are fresh and tasty; they sometimes have chocolate chip bagels, which my kids love; when you get one fresh out of the wood oven, it’s heavenly; the spreads are dopeThe bad: the line is out the door on the weekends in the mornings, and it moves pretty slow; sometimes they tell you that “all the bagels are fresh” when you ask for one right out of the oven; it’s a little pricey for bagelsSeating is available, but pretty limited. Overall, you will probably be very happy at Spread, provided you don’t go during the weekend rush. You won’t regret getting a bagel right out of the oven, I promise.
I placed an order online. They substituted the type of bagel and cheese unilaterally. They should have called and asked me first. Then I found a hair in my bagel.I’ve called four times over the course of 45 minutes and they’ve not answered despite the fact that they’re no customers inside and they couldn’t possibly be busy. I’ve left two voicemails, and they’ve not called me back.
The bagels are ok, not anything like you’ll get in Montreal, which has me wondering if they’ve ever been to Montreal to have a real Montreal style bagel. The sandwiches were pricey, which I get, but the quality should match the price. I got the bagel that came with the pastrami, the meat was pulled, not sliced against the grain making for long strings of beef that are not easy to eat. My wife got a bagel with whitefish salad and cream cheese, big clumps of fish and a tablespoon of cream cheese was what she got. We got 3 bagel sandwiches plus 3 drip coffees and the total came to $51, so for the price, not worth it, for authenticity, not close.
Wow. This is the best bagel I’ve ever had, and it wasn’t close. I was looking for a good breakfast and chose “The Cure” bagel, and boy was I happy, even though it was fairly expensive at $13.50 including tax.The sriracha smoked Gouda spread was amazing, and the bacon was perfect. They were out of whole wheat bagels today, but the regular everything bagel was very, very good. The line was short at 8 am on a Sunday, though it was certainly a popular spot. I really enjoyed watching the baker at work boiling, coating, and finally baking the bagels in the wood fired oven. I look forward to returning!
Bagels are delicious. They are Montreal style so know what are you getting before eating. The “Standard” breakfast sandwich (bacon, egg, and cheese) is excellent
Best bagels Ive had in the city, and its not close!
What to get: Bagels you dunce!A real treat is Spread Bagelry. Easily the best breakfast in walking distance (if youre down with the carbs).Enjoy a opulent specialty bagel if youre feeling really indulgent. My favorite bagel? Cream cheese + bacon :)
The egg, cheese, and bacon itself were delicious and of high quality. The price, the bagel, and the service are all subpar. It’s surprising so many people wait in a 30 minute line for these mediocre and overpriced bagels.
Spread breakfast sandwiches are always my recommendation for those wanting the best in Center City. I love getting the Whole Wheat everything bagels. Note these are Montreal style bagels. If you’re looking for NY style go elsewhere.
Great place for brunch. It gets busy, but they move the line quickly. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a casual place to either sit down and eat or grab and go.
I would try this place again. The three stars are due to poor service and communication from the server, at a time when the place was empty. Not a deal breaker, but did dampen the experience. The second star was for a slight burnt taste on the bagels. The poppy seeds on top took a little crisp when reheated. Also not that bad, but could be better. Potential for better days.
These are really the best bagels Ive had in Philly. Melt in your mouth good. Expect to wait a long time for them its a popular place.
Half the employees were working hard and two were just chatting about the beach. Wish others pulled more weight and I could assure the two guys doing for he work would get my tip. Bagels are yummy
I’m torn on this review, as I really like their bagels. Their bagels are really great and their cream cheeses are tremendous. I can’t stress that enough. But the wait times are bananas, even if the line isn’t very long. While it’s not a very large place, they only have 1 toaster and a little griddle — so if the people in front of you have a big order and you only want a bagel, prepare to wait a long, long time.
Love there variety of bagels and spreads.
Good bagels, absolutely the worst customer service. Waited 20 minutes in line this morning only to be informed that they were not selling bagels. Im sorry, what? They had plenty of bagels on display, but refused to sell them as they would only use them of their overpriced sandwhiches. On top of that, the staff was rude and dismissive when I inquired as to why they wouldnt sell me even 1 plain bagel .Advice to management: 1) if you call yourself a bagel shop, please sell bagels. 2) teach your staff how to be polite when dealing with customers. 3) if you do run into a situation again where you cant sell bagels for whatever reason, please consider using a sign so that customers do not wait 20 to 30 minutes in line only to find out they cannot purchase the product they came for.
When I come into Philadelphia, I always make it a point to stop at 2 breakfast places whenever possible. One of them of course is spread Bagelry. Their breakfast sandwiches are very filling and should be shared. Get your own coffee or fresh juice and youve got a good breakfast going on. The eggs in the bagels are not the best Kama they are a bit rubbery because they microwave them but overall sandwich is really good especially the Carnegie breakfast sandwich which has really great pastrami.
Love it
I feel this place is worthy of more stars but at the moment I cannot appropriately give it to them. I heard great things and have a newly reoccurring appointment near by and decided today was the day.The BAGEL! The bagel itself is fantastic. I personally love everything and its loaded up. But I have the wonderful crunch from being baked in the brick oven. The WHITEFISH SALAD. Yum, unfortunately they only have half a serving left. Which now makes me nervous this post may be followed by some gastrointestinal issues. The reason! Three stars because the were not prepared. They were out of flavors of bagels, cucumbers, ice tea, now white fish... and who knows what else supposedly because the prep cook didnt prep.I will be back mainly because the bagel itself is delicious but as a business owner myself, preparedness no matter what is makes a place and people a home rub.Update: 1/25/19I finally got to have a bagel the way I really wanted it. White fish salad with cucumber. Again the bagels themselves for those who love the crunch, hell yes. But the whitefish salad is chunk with a hint of mayo and the cucumbers arent gross from sitting in the fridge too long after being sliced.A+
This bagel spot is a staple. Prime breakfast spot next to Rittenhouse Square. If you’re a tourist or a local, Spread Bagelry is where it’s at. They even have live musicians sometimes! It’s worth the wait and even better to get a delicious bagel and eat in the park!
I really like their bagels and spreads. Its nice to sit outside when the weather is nice.
These are THE best bagels I’ve ever had. Ok second favorite bc I mean nothing beats NYC bagels. But the wait, is soooo worth the wait. Highly recommend the raisin bagel. And obviously the salmon, whitefish bagel is a great bang for your buck. I could eat 3 at a time
Sweet sassy molassy, this is the most delicious bagel I have ever eaten.P.S. Since I originally wrote this, I went to Montreal for the first time and tried a few different bagels there. Spread definitely captured the distinct flavor of the Montreal bagel. The downside to the bagels in Montreal is that they have huge, gaping holes in the middle. Spread bagels are shaped more like New York bagels, so I think they are the best of both worlds.
The bagels are delicious but I just wish their everything bagel had salt on it!
Great food fast service.
Ordered a whole wheat everything bagel with bacon and egg and a coffee to go. The service was great and fast and the food was fresh and delicious. There is seating indoor and outdoor at this charming shop, so I will definitely be back to enjoy it again.
Very good bagels. Wasnt as blown away by the breakfast Sandwich as I expected to be. Too expensive IMO. Definitely a great option though. I went mid morning on day off so it was not crowded luckily.Food:🥈Atmosphere:🥈Service:🥇Value:🥉
The bagels here are delicious and are always served warm and fresh, and theres a wide range of spreads that you can compliment your bagel with. The only thing that keeps me from giving this review a full 5 stars is the fact that the prices are a little high then what I would expect to pay for a bagel. If youre willing to splurge a bit, it doesnt hurt to try the Bagelry at least once.
As much praise as this place gets, I can also see why theyre not as awesome as hoped. Theyre so popular, even after being open this long, that theyve got a not-inconsiderate wait, and if youre ordering a hot bagel sandwich... well, be prepared to wait even longer.Pricing is clearly hipster. If it was a tad cheaper it still wouldnt be a good value, but they would be pretty tasty. As it is... umm... it all adds up enough that I would not feel enthused enough to go back.
SLOW. Third time I order a bagel with plain cream cheese and I’m continuously waiting while staff mill around or talk in the back . It’s the simplest order, shouldn’t take 10 min, and the poor guy working the grill seems to be the only one allowed to work!
Best bagels in Philly, but the line is insane. On weekends it can take over 45 minutes to get your order. The staff also arent very friendly or helpful. If you need bagels on the weekend, Fitzwater Philly bagels is much faster and friendlier, and almost as good. If you really want Spread, go during the week shortly before closed: theres no line and the bagels are still fresh.
This place is fantastic. 6 times as never a bad bagel or sandwich. Expect a long line on weekends but 100% worth the wait. Super nice staff makes for a pleasant experience.
Johanna is the most sweetest being among the Earth, she works hard and works with confidence on her side! The food is delicious and filling too! This place is greatly recommended for the best breakfast in the mornings! 😊😊😊
