Favorite homemade chocolates in the philadelphia area. i recommend the classic vanilla buttercreams, but you cant go wrong with anything here. the chocolate covered caramels are also a favorite i was told. the staff here are all super friendly and helpful. the only downside is that its a little pricey, so i only come here on occasion!
I got a quarter pound of double salty licorice and a quarter pound of sassafras candies. They were both super good. The sassafras looked orange but you could really taste the sassafras flavor. The woman behind the counter was very helpful.
So cute and well made. A novelty
I used to love this place and would go multiple times a year but ever since the restrictions were put in place you can no longer get many of the same products that you could get before. I understand keeping people out of a small store due to health concerns but I really wish you could still pick your own flavors for boxes of chocolates. The pre-boxed selections are just not worth the high prices and the variety not as wide. Im not buying a pre-packaged box of butter creams with half the box being fruit flavored ones that I wont eat. I was willing to pay the higher prices when I could pick my own flavors but I cant justify it with that option no longer being available. Guess Ill go to Lores(which allows you in store and still allows you to pick your own flavors) unless/until you guys reconsider and bring back the pick your own option(maybe provide a menu on the window with all of the varieties?)
We learned of this delightful area gem when they were featured at Longwood Gardens this past Christmas, 2019. Walking in the door is like stepping back in time. Vast assortment of candy from days gone by. I literally wanted to buy one of everything. In the back of the shop is the hot chocolate counter. You’ve never had true authentic hot chocolate of you haven’t had it from Shane’s. They even host workshops throughout the year. The store displays are works of art. We’ve visited several times over the past few months.
I love the hot cocoa shop in the back. I was sad to hear it wasnt open during the pandemic but they sold me a tin of the mix and told me if I followed the directions it was just as good. They lied. Its even better. Partially because I now can have it several times a day without leaving my pajamas. But also because its absolutely amazing!Everything else they sell is also amazing. But that cocoa sets the bar high.
What a great little find on Market Street (closer to Penn’s Landing. They offer both locally made chocolates and candies. In addition it’s a great destination to purchase seldom seen items like velvet mints. The sales staff was dressed in Colonial attire adding to the old feel experience in the store. If you walk through the store to the far end you will also discover The Chocolate Cafe, where you can sit and order desserts.
Very cute old fashioned candy and chocolate shop. Being in here makes you feel awe and wonder because there is not much like it and it is very old-timey. The decorations are beautiful. Im not sure how I feel about making the workers wear costumes but it is a part of the experience I suppose. They have chocolate flights and drinks available here as well and they taste rich and delicious and they even have vegan options.
Slice of history in the birthplace of our country..Incredible perfection!
Stopped in while touring Philadelphia. Smells wonderful when you walk in. Bought a few small packages of chocolate covered espresso beans - delightful. But what was really good was the drinking chocolates. I’m really not a hot chocolate person, and it was a relatively warm day, but the descriptions sounded so good we had try get a sampler. We tried the Agua de Nicaragua, Tuscan Jasmine Ciocclato, and the White Peppermint. Well worth a try!
So happy that this family business landed in trust worthy hands after Barry Shane retired. They definitely keep its spirit alive! Not to mention the chocolates/candy is delicious.
Shanes is a wonderful confectionery with a wide selection of sweets, featuring both classic and unique varieties. The service is always wonderful and product is always a high quality. The aesthetic of building, decor, and staff attire are all very in keeping with the Old City location.Prices can be a bit high compared to the simple Hersheys or Cadbury sweets, but are roughly in line with other housemade confections. The Chocolate Café in the back of the store is equally appealing in style and quality, but does fall into the same pricey category.Ultimately you are getting what you pay for; if you want a cheap, sweet treat go to a nearby Wawa for the hot chocolate & candy bar or maybe a Starbucks. However, if you are willing to spend a little bit extra you can come to Shanes and get some remarkable housemade confections and watch as they make your delicious hot chocolate from scratch.
One of the finest hidden treasures to date. Shanes chocolate is worth the price, quality and over all best chocolate around.
Their website says pickup window open 12pm to 7 pm monday thru sunday. their voicemail says the same thing. i drove an hour and got there at 2:30 pm on tuesday----CLOSED!!!!DONT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING TO THIS PLACE. BUY SOME CHOCOLATE AT CVS AND SAVE YOUR VALUABLE TIME.up until 1 hour ago, anybody visiting your website saw the monday -sunday message. looks like you just changed the message to friday-sunday a little while ago. No cache problem on this end.
Showed up with the intent to spend non trivial amount of money- told the shop was closed 15 minutes before advertised close and to go next door to buy a small portion of desired order. Spent 15 minutes while next door attempted to figure out if and how to sell single item of orginal order. Product is great- the service makes it near impossible to buy or to continue patronizing.
After a 30 minute walk, we were disappointed to learn the store remains closed, except for the pick-up window for orders placed on their website.
Their mint chocolate malt balls are great. Get them every time I go. Everybody I take here always enjoys the aesthetic of the place
Really cool place, amazing options for chocolates, other candies and old-school gum
I ordered chocolates here through Caviar to celebrate my roommate’s birthday and had one of the WORST online ordering experiences ever!!! I placed the order before I left for work for pickup, and by the time I got there (7:00 pm) they were closed. Even though the posted hours online and on the website said they were open until 8:00 pm. Tried again on another weeknight, and this time there were actually workers in the store fulfilling orders and they refused to come to the door or answer the phone. How are customers supposed to receive the order they PAID for online if the shop is closed before they’re supposed to and if the workers deliberately don’t answer the door??? Terrible experience. Would not repurchase or recommend.
We love Shanes! Especially the hot chocolate bar in the back. When you enter the store its like walking back in time. The staff are dressed in period clothes and bring a ton of charm and quirk. All the treats are tasty. Its also worth doing one of the tours. Enjoy!
This is one of my favorite places in the entire world, and it should be one of yours too. This place is:1) The oldest continuously operating candy store in America. Many of their moulded candies are made in 100+ year old molds.2) A treasure trove of one-of-a-kind finds, including the original Turkish delight from the original shop that makes it in Turkey, a chocolate ice cream bar with a single origin dark chocolate shell from in house chocolate and ice cream, and jelly beans made with real fruit juice. Also the best dark licorice varieties ever.3) Eco-conscious. They keep bees on the roof and incorporate the honey into many of their products, and they use biodegradable cellophane to wrap their candies. With such a shortage of delight in the world, why not treat yourself to a visit to Shane? Or multiple visits? Life is short. Spend it at Shanes.
Top quality confections in a very pretty historical old-time shop. Staff is in full period costume and very friendly and patient while you decide what to buy. All chocolates and displayed candies in the cases are handmade with top ingredients and and absolutely delicious. They are also expensive, so you may want to ask the cost per pound before loading up. Make sure you go into the very back to see the actual kitchen for demonstrations and visit the hot chocolate bar. I visit Shanes every time Im in or near Old City.
Variety of candies, chocolate in one old shop. They always serves quality. Their staff is bit professional and dressed up in a very good manner. Very amazing smell in this shop. Recommended !!
Awesome hot sipping chocolate. Recommend the Spanish with cinnamon and chili. Candy selection dazzled our 11 yo grandson.
Elegant,Delicious, period correct. and fun. Ive never seen anything like it. time stops once you enter and rewinds to 1911.
Fantastic Hot Chocolate made right on the spot.... had the flight and they made em Vegan for me which was awesome! Great friendly service.. would suggest to anyone looking for a cool treat off the beaten path.
My chocolate bar was $8 idk 🤷🏽♀️ I was just trying to show some support
This is one of my favorite hidden gems in Philly. Any time a friend or family member comes to visit, I take them inside. Shane Confectionary is like walking into a memory older than my own. It’s wonderfully vintage and attractive down to the smallest detail. Especially around Easter, it’s positively booming with chocolate bunnies. If you head toward the back you can sample the drinking chocolate which is a fun thing to try, especially on a cold day. To be honest, even walking in here cheers me up and the chocolate is just perfect.
Best place for hot chocolate in PhiladelphiaI love hot chocolate. I have tried every place for hot chocolate that I can find in Philly and no one beats Shane. This is NOT milk based hot chocolate. They heat chocolate up so that it is liquid, add a few more ingredients (I recently had a rose infused hot chocolate - delicious!), and there you have it: 4 oz of heaven.
Hit the deck cant even get in Philadelphia you know discount everything in there thats pretty good in your Im happy with it I give him :-) you know
Oh my! What can u say!? The chocolate is phenomenal. I guess if youve been working with chocolate for over 100 years you have the time to figure things out. Everything I had, from a milkshake, to the chocolate, to the caramels was absolutely delicious. You cant go wrong here.
Americas oldest candy store oozes with historic charm, but its the smooth brown elixir known as Thomas Jefferson Drinking chocolate from the cafe in the back that is sure to induce euphoria. Id skip the peanut butter cups, however, as they were unanimously disappointing.
Great place for all things chocolate! The oldest continuously functioning confectionery in North America. Theyve maintained a lot of the old charm. The Thomas Jefferson hot chocolate at the cafe is a solid choice.
Super cute atmosphere and really good candy. Feels like you’ve stepped back 100 years into a small confectioners shop. Even the old tills work!
I just loved their chocolates! The staff was patient and outstandingly friendly. Im serious about which chocolates I pick so It takes a while to build my chocolate box haha Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun picking my chocolates and in the end they were heavenly!!
Ive never been to the store, but I received their turtles as a x-mas gift. They were hands down the best I ever had. First of all they are gigantic. I only ate one at a time. The caramel was gooey and delicious. The chocolate melted in my mouth.
Worth a visit! Their cocoa nib ice cream sandwiches are amazing. And their bean to bar dark chocolate is to die for!
Simply wonderful! Got a buttercream egg, small pectin jellybeans, and, of course, a molded glass bunny. Doesnt get any better than that! P.S. watch out for the time- warp at the front door. As soon as you enter, you go back 100 yrs!
A real gem! Classic candies in an Edwardian setting...charm for days. And you can watch the chocolatiers at work in the back if youre lucky! Savor a smooth, rich hot cocoa too!
Ive been coming to Shanes since I was in the womb and Mom needed her buttercream fix! Its the oldest and tastiest candy store in America. Try the dark chocolate buttercreams, the lemon buttercreams in white chocolate, and the honey lavender caramels. Shanes also makes giant gingerbread cookies using cookie molds from centuries ago, which are amazing. If youre in Philly during the month of October, check out their Halloween-themed candy kitchen tours!
This was worth the stop! A lot of eclectic-flavored chocolates, and the classics too.
Love this place! I was looking for real dark chocolate, and its perfect place for that. Also, the mood here brings me back to the past.
Chrissy was so knowledgeable and helpful that we had to upgrade the size of the box, twice. Get anything filled with peanut butter, its magical. The marshmallow is the best Ive ever had.
Come to see the very old old-fashioned candy store and marvel at the display. But dont leave with some of the hard candy they make themselves. Well worth a visit, maybe while you are waiting for friends at the popular ice cream place next door.
Beautiful historic shop. I don’t even like chocolate or candy but I was taken by the charm of this place. I had a hot chocolate. It was much needed for the cold rainy day. Make sure you stop in and see it. It’s frozen in time and it’s wonderful!
This is what chocolate should be. Hersheys Chocolate World can definitely learn a lot from the drinking chocolate they have here. One of a kind experience.
Having previously worked in confectioneries/candy shops, I have a new found appreciation for them. Shanes does an incredible job of creating that 18th-century atmosphere with its displays, employee costumes, and old-fashioned cash register! The candy clerks are always very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable about the shops offerings, and quick to recommend their favorite selections. Shane’s is definitely a place not to be missed on a trip to Old City, especially if youre visiting from out of town!
Oh my Goodness....the BEST hot cocoa on the Planet! UNFORGETABLY DELICIOUS
My Renee loves this place...hand crafted chocolates...fantastic Hot Chocloate..MD
Quaint candy store with great selections and friendly staff. Decently priced candies as well. Recommend taking a visit!
Wonderful old candy shop. The shop in one form or another dates to the Civil War. Great selection of chocolates and confections. If you are anywhere near Shanes you simply must stop in. Heads above the cold high end candy stores.
Cool place. Workers dress up in old time clothes. Good selection.
A friend brought sakura matcha kit kat bars from Japan and I absolutely fell in love with them. These are not to be confused with the matcha kit kat bars. After realizing I could never go back to eating regular kit kat bars, I went on a mad search to get my hands on more sakura matcha kit kats.
Always a nice place to visit and look at pretty candies. Always has on par displays for Halloween etc. The drinking chocolate is a must, u gotta try it!!!
Best hot chocolate even. Candy is very good. Very high on experience scale. Fun atmosphere.
Hours not correct on site! Waited in the cold before we realized it didnt open for another hour. We had to leave without visiting and then listen to angry kids all the way home. Fun times.
Went for a tour with my neice when she was visiting, it was a great activity for us to do together. Really interesting to hear about all the original fixtures of the building and history of the business. Also the caramels are really really good. Lavender caramel was memorable!
Historic location. They make great candy. Tours of the back are on weekends, but you have to reserve your spot in advance.
I love all the places the Berley Brothers own. The chocolate is delectable and looks beautiful too.
Lovely store and beautiful presentation. Staff is dressed up in historic, period clothes.Only had the hot chocolate and it was delectable.
The tours are worth it, very high quality products. Hot chocolate to die for.
Really cool building with original floors, tin ceiling, molding and even original square nails in the floor. The chocolate is amazing, way to much to list but they really do dark chocolate pretzels well.
I bought my Moms Mothers Day gift here, and she absolutely loved it. She was impressed by the visual presentation and especially the quality and taste. And I love the retro aesthetic! Ill be returning!
Total time slip great hot chocolate
My wife and I had heard about Shanes and everything I had heard about them was absolutely correct. Although they arent priced cheaply, everything we tried and bought was tremendous.I brought things home to my peanut butter lovers and chocolate lovers and they all agreed with me.Thank you Shanes! Keep the great candy coming!
The place was like old times which was kept very well. The hot chocolate was amazing & the place one of the best place I have visited
Have to try the chocolate cafe in the back. AMAZING
Incredibly limited/boring selection of chocolate bars. Tall strawberry blonde guy working there was rude and pretentious. Reminded me why I stopped patronizing their other business (Franklin Fountain).
Great place to explore, I bought a variety of candies and all were spectacular. Fun place especially for those that like historical stores.
A step back in time...lovely
