ICS Automotive Machines in Pittsburgh is the machine shop that would be on the Andy Griffith Show because they provide small-hometown service, reasonable prices and quality work. The work is only done by the two business owners. Engine was a BMW S54 from a 2004 M3.I called several shops and one told me that he would not touch my engine for $1 million dollars. Another was too busy and a third shop hung up on me. I choose ICS because Bob spent time discussing their work on the phone. I drove almost 2 hours to Pittsburgh and Bob explained their process for 30 minutes and showed me the blown head gasket that caused the low compression in the cylinders.I explained my budget to Bob. So, he called after he accessed the engine to provide the options and prices for the head, crank, and block but I was not sure about the valve job because of my budget. Therefore, Bob tested the head for leaks and called me back and told me that the head did not currently need a valve job. I decided not to do the valves but changed my mind within 24 hours because I was not sure how long the valve seats would last on a head with 186,000 miles. Bob reduced the price of the valve job by at least 25% from the quoted price.AFTER I RECEIVED THE ENGINE FROM ICSI told Bob that the piston rings from online retailers were expensive at $732 - $834. So, I ordered racing pistons with the rings from an online retailer for $823 and Bob told me that I would not be happy with pistons containing 2618 alloy. Therefore, I canceled the online order and Bob ordered the rings for me at only $107. The correct rings for the engine were sent but they did not meet the specs. So, he provided a refund and spent 90 minutes on Hastings’s website searching for the correct piston rings. Bob asked his distributor about NPR rings after I told him that I found NPR rings in England. Unfortunately, I had to purchase the rings in Europe because NPR USA does not manufacture the rings. My bank is an hour and half drive from my location but the bank is close to ICS. So, Bob offered to deposit the check for the piston-rings refund at the bank on his drive home.Additionally, Bob spent over 2 hours on the phone, at least 2 hours attempting to find piston rings to save me money, and at least 1 – 2 hours replying to my emails for no charge.I also heard about an instance when Bob drove 45 minutes to help someone after they installed their engine. Bob determined that the issue was the newly rebuilt carburetor from a different company. So, he called a friend who is a carburetor expert who fixed the carburetor for free.ICS Automotive Machines in Pittsburgh does great and honest machine work at a fair price but I wanted to show that they care about others, will do their best to keep the cost within budget, and go out of their way to help others.
Absolutely incredible service! I was changing a flat on the side of the highway putting on the dummy tire when Brian of ICS pulled up asking if I needed a tire repair. He took the tire to the shop, patched it, and brought it back all in about 20-25 minutes. Saved me tons of time and headache. Always grateful for yoopers looking out for each other - definitely part of what I love about living here. Thanks, Brian!
ICS is truly the best hands down. Bob and Mike are super knowledgeable and always offer the best advise. No disappointments what so ever. I had the original 396 for my 69 c10 built by ICS and it was top notch. Daily driven and raced for years with never an issue. That was in 2005 and the engine is still running strong. Ever since then, ICS has been able to do all sorts of machine work for me with the utmost professionalism every single time. I highly recommend ICS!!!
I absolutely love these guys. Bob built a Pontiac motor for me 10 years ago and it still runs great. No leaks and starts right up. I dropped off a set of heads Friday after work and they were done Monday afternoon. They never have a problem answering questions. I would definitely recommend them
My personal experience with ICS machine has been beyond a satisfying one. They built me a custom 427 for a 69 chevelle and showed every attention to detail. Bob would call me at every step of the process and explain my options with pros, cons, and relation to price. Never once did he treat me like the meter was continuing to run. He would go over everything and educate me to make my best choice. After the motor was completed i had a shop install it and i found out 800 miles later they did everything wrong which caused damage to my motor. To say that Bob empathized with me was an understatement, he helped me through the process and spent more time correcting and diagnosing other peoples errors which he did not need to do. The motor now is correct and car runs and sounds incredible. You get what you pay for!
Excellent service! Had some bearings pressed on to Dana 44 axles for my Jeep and they definitely went the extra mile for me. Will absolutely be using their services again. Highly recommended.
Took a set of heads and a block there to be checked out, they did what they said they would do. Cost was about $330 dollars(apparently cash only business) Instead of saying they were uninterested into doing things to subarus. They told me it was going to cost $4,000 not including parts to do a valve job and roughly about $2300 to bore and re hone cylinders. Moral of all of this I paid them $330 dollars just to tell me basically they want nothing to do with this. Money was not an issue at all but I am sure it does not take 40 hours to do a valve job. They could have been more straight forward when I first called in. Another thing that irritating. I was unable to pick up the block and heads after I told them I am not paying $4,000 for a valve job. They were going to try to charge me $100 a day to store my parts into a rusted none water proof trailer in their cluttered filed lot. Also received all my parts loosely from the heads in a cardboard box very careless.
Bob and Mike are simply the best at what they do. They are precise and professional. Bob always takes time out of his packed day to answer questions . He even helped personally troubleshoot a motor issue I had that he was not responsible for. Highly recommended!
I’ve know bob and mike for a long time now and I wouldn’t take ma hi e work anywhere else. Always quality work jay is dependable. Also very easy to deal with and Always has the best information.

Excellent quick professional service. Honest pricing. Will certainly do business with again.
Bob and the rest of the guys at ics are all prompt and helpful. Had two rotating assemblies balanced and some other misc work done by them in the last two years and both times were the same awesome service and relatively quick turn arounds. Theyll even go out of their way to help in the event of any snags in the project which they have done for me. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend ics machine shop. Mike and Bob did a fantastic job on my 400 small block chevy. They worked within my budget that I gave. They gave me more than I thought possible. They always answered any questions that I had. I recommend using them for your machine work needs.
Had a great experience with ICS automotive machine. They did the machine work on my AMC 401cu. Motor for my AMX. Bob and his team were very professional and very knowledgeable. They kept me informed on the progress of the work being done, and completed it in a reasonable time frame and were also very fair in their pricing. I would definitely recommend them for your engine building needs
