I grew up eating authentic NY style bagels on the east coast, and I can tell you Bowery Bagels are legit! I cant go a week without coming here.I would respectfully argue that any reviewer claiming these to be too hard may not be totally aware of (or perhaps just do not like) what an authentic NY bagel is. They are boiled for a few seconds before they get baked. This seals the crust and gives it that authentic bagel crunch on the outside that bubbles slightly when toasted and develops another layer of flavor, while also remaining chewy on the inside. This is what makes a great bagel. Most store bought and inauthentic bagels are soft because it is simply just enriched wheat flour bread shaped in a circle. Not here. These are quality. I dont think its fair at all to criticize a bagel shop or dock them stars for having authentic NY style bagels, which is what the website even states they do.Bowery is the best and the staff are lovely too
I immediately regretted not getting a bagel with schmear. i ordered the oliver lent because the gruyere really sounded like it would hit the spot, but truth be told — go with what you know. i know i like sesame bagels with schmear.the bagels are OK, but they’re not the right texture — reminded me of really dense bread.the service was great. the staff was super friendly and the coffee they made was good, too. it’s worth stating, the bagels are superior to any i’ve had in seattle.
Clearly anyone who left less than 5 stars doesn’t know how bagels should taste. I got an everything bagel with herb schmear and it was absolutely divine! Perfect level of crunch. I recently moved to the PNW and y’all like your bagels doughy and dense for some reason - these bagels are definitely not that.
I ordered the Dan Burnside Bagel on Garlic Herb, and got an iced vanilla latte from Bowery, both were amazing!! I literally took a bite and went “oh my god…. Oh my god!” it was so good. Coffee was perfect, and one bagel sandwich kept me full all day. Definitely coming back soon!
The bagels are fresh and taste good. The staff (only some of them) have an attitude problem. I like to ask for extra cream cheese since sometimes it can be very light. No problem and i always offer to pay extra, I really dont mind. Well as I pay by card I hit the 10% tip (usually I choose 15/20%) by accident. With no obvious way to back out, I just finished the payment. Well the young lady behind the counter stared at me like Id stepped in something I shouldnt have. That was nothing like the stare down I got when she handed me my bagel. Well sure enough there was almost no cream cheese on my bagel 🙄. Seriously, ...
The bagel was tasty and the service inside was good. The coffee was pretty good too. Unfortunately did not receive the topping I payed for and it would’ve been nice if the bagel was fully cut.
The food was great. I got the jalepeno bagel with plain cream cheese. The bagel was perfect.
Great food, kind people. Worth the early wake up and the granola and yogurt is divine.
I drove from Vancouver to buy bagels but they’re closed. Too far for nothing- I won’t be back. Really just an average bagel- nothing special.
Good bagels, very good breakfast sandwiches. Could use some different flavors sometimes- no garlic, no cheese bagels.
They have the best bagels in portland. they also offer vegan spreads, vegan sausage, vegan cheese AND vegan egg so you can build the breakfast sandwich of your dreams. i love this place :•)
Im so glad i tried this place. This reminds me of the great bagles i got in NYC. Highly recommend bowery.
I deliver food from this shop through food delivery apps. They gave me a one star rating because they failed to give me items a customer ordered, and rightfully got blamed for it. I am returning the favor and giving you a one star review as well. Learn to respect your drivers we are making you money.Edit: just picked up more orders today. This time they made me wait 20 minutes because they saw my review, serving ppl who came in after me. Very petty behavior from grown men/women.
These bagles remind me of my trip to NY a long time ago. Real simple and good. The crew here rocks. So dont forget to tip...... And well
Was heading up to Seattle on the Bolt Bus and saw Bowery Bagels from the bus stop. Having been born and lived near the Bowery, in New York, I was curious. The décor is that of the old Noahs Bagels, tiled to look like a NY subway station. The staff were attentive, getting my order just right (and thats not a given). The bagels are good, and the toppings too. Its not up to par with NYs best -- Russ & Daughters on Houston St -- but it was very satisfying in Portland, very early on a Saturday morning.
Delicious chewy bagels. Always a good selection and delicious options for filling them. Their house made gravlax is my favorite.
Good place to go if you want to eat yesterdays bagels...nothing like N.Y. bagels, poor selection, way overpriced...what a gyp
The staff were friendly, but not very focused or helpful. They got our order wrong, and cheerfully didnt seem to understand what the problem was with that. Finally gave up trying to get the mocha latte we ordered (unamused though we were with the soy latte we were given), and just came to terms with the fact that the hot chocolate would remain only half a 16oz hot chocolate. The breakfast sandwiches were....not edible. The bagels were chewy, tough, and tasteless. The egg was not appealing and the bacon was...something with bacon flavoring. We trashed the sandwiches and the soy latte, downed the 8oz of lukewarm chocolate. I enjoyed the yoghurt with dried raisins and toasted coconut...even though it was impossible to find a place to eat it and I couldnt manage the sandwiches and drinks and tub of yoghurt until I had thrown everything else away....since we were shoo-ed out the door the moment we tried to eat or drink anything inside. Waste of $30. We went across the street to Johns Cafe and had the best breakfast I have had in along time. Steer away from the bagels and go sit down at Johns.
Great food, great coffee! The service was excellent. management works the floor which means you’ll be taken care of. Carmel does a great job and is always uplifting and cheery. This is now my regular spot!
Love all the vegan options. This is our regular breakfast place for the lazy weekend mornings. Can’t go wrong, bagels are super fresh. I only wish we had found this place sooner.
Hands down the best bagels in Portland or anywhere west of the Mississippi. I used to live in Brooklyn NY not far from the top rated bagel shop there..Bowery is every bit as good. Have tried many others in Portland and been disappointed.
Only tastes like a NYC bagel if you have never been to NYC. $3.25 for a bagel and cream cheese.
Bagel and lox with a light schmear. Got a day old bagel and the lox was definitely not fresh. 🥯
Best breakfast sandwich of my life
My favorite bagel shop in Portland.
Ive tried them all in Portland. You win my vote!
Everything bagel with the B.O.M smear. (Bacon Onion Mushroom)10/10
Their bacon and egg bagel sandwich knocked me onto my bottom. No regrets. Be back sooon.
Great bagels, smoked salmon & cream cheese was awesome!
Ordered extra stuff on my bagel and didnt recieve any of them...
Fresh bagels. Not remotely close to NYC. They also got my order wrong. Egg style incorrect - fine. No cheese on my breakfast sandwich?! Unforgivable. Better places in the area, will not be coming back.
Great little shop! Every employee is courteous and polite. I love their bagels!
Love the bagels here, however when we went this morning they were understaffed. Management should have at least 3 people working...
First time at Bowery bagels today and it was great. The girl at the front desk was very knowledgeable and helpful. I had an everything bagel with herb spread and it was great. The stumptown coffee americano was great as well. 6 dollars for both. Not too bad. I would reccomend this place to anyone who wants a good bagel and some good coffee.
Great vegan options and one of the most affordable vegan breakfast options in Portland. The bagels are great and you have to try their caramelized onion spread that is vegan.
Stumbled upon this establishment on my way to the Bolt Bus. So glad I did! I ordered coffee and a bagel with avocado. After the transaction went through, they discovered the avocado wasnt available and offered me any other topping I wanted. They gave me veggies and vegan shmear, all the while quite apologetic. No offense was taken by this customer, as the staff were so friendly and efficient; it was clear that pleasing their customer was a priority. Besides the great customer service, it was a delicious bagel. That and the Stumptown coffee were just the perfect combination for boarding the Bolt Bus. Very vegan friendly, great people working there, Ill be returning! #veganfriendly
The first time I walked in here someone had Frankie Knuckles Whistle Song playing behind the counter and it was a beautiful sunny day on broadway... Felt so romantically urban that I knew I’d found the right bagel shop before I even took a bite of one of their delicious bagels.
Had the Sarahs Special on a garlic and herb bagel and it was fantastic! Cool little NY style/vibe shop! Just a couple stools at a counter in the window if youre wanting to eat in, but I took mine to go!
I come here at least once a week. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, and know what they are doing. An amazing place for anyone who wants a bite of Portland done right.
I came in a rush today to get something to eat before I got on the Bolt Bus and everyone was really helpful and sweet. I have to say that not only was the customer service fantastic but that Everything bagel was EVERYTHING. I havent had a bagel that tasty in years.Thank you for the delicious breakfast and a great start to my day.
They have the best bagels you’ll find this side of the Rockies. Their staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I made an order the day prior for a brunch spread I put together for Admin Day and Chad Brown was very responsive and very helpful and made it so easy. Everything was perfect as always. Be sure to take advantage of their house made schmeer! It’s heavenly.
Ive ate here a few times as i work in the neighborhood a few blocks away, I have yet to be disappointed there is never a long wait the bagels are always warm and delicious. The customer service is awesome quick and nice and the staff always keeps the shop clean definitely happy with Bowery Bagels! Ps if they had mimosas this would be the coolest brunch spot in Portland just saying
New go to bagel spot
This place is AMAZING! I am always looking for a place to get a sea salt bagel, and theirs is fantastic! Great service, great food, great shop.
A total disgrace to the Bowery name. This is an airport quality bagel and price. The pigeons on the real Bowery street would not eat this pathetic dough mess. Just terrible.
I love the bagels here. The sammies are a good value and are all delicious. Cool little space, mini market to buy some kitchen sundries too.
Perfect bagels and plenty of vegan options. The veganbom cashew cream cheese with caramelized onions is incredible.
Stopped in here randomly while waiting on the Bolt bus and it was amazing. A warm respite from the cold filled with amazing bread smells and friendly staff with big smiles. They answered my questions about the smoked salmon spread and how fishy it may smell and so were helpful in my quest to not be THAT person on the bus. They also suggested the great lavender iced tea which was so delightful!Warmed/toasted that bagel to perfection and I was set to have the best snack experience on my bus ride. 👌💕The store/restaurant is small with not much seating, but they have a great selection and great prices!
Good bagels and coffee. Isnt a deal, they are in line with other coffee shops/cafes downtown with quality coffee. Not a pleasant atmosphere inside, seems to be setup to encourage people to get out instead of hanging out. Not a place to crack a laptop or read the paper. Overall solid if you are looking for a bagel and coffee to go.
The bagels are fresh and delicious, the prices are good and the service is fast.
Ok, if they served more boutique coffee, this would have to be a 5-star review. How Portland is that, knocking off a star because of the coffee roaster? But they do make it well, and since it’s not called Bowery Coffee, let’s talk about the bagels:Never had a bad bite.I’m not an adventurous eater, either. Usually I’m good with a toasted salt bagel with butter - aka, a Butter Sandwich - but this place makes me crave a fancier bagel. Or a plain bagel with a schmear because they taste so good, I don’t want the bagel to be anything but a Schmear Delivery System.
Solid bagels and friendly staff. But not a very large selection of flavors for bagels. Makes sense as they might have a lot of left overs if they did that I guess, since it doesnt seem like a super busy place. Cool small biz vibe, but there isnt really any seating other than a counter with some stools. Definitely a to go place.
This place is freaking awesome. Persobally I adore the decor and the friendly staff. The bagles are great and the vegan choices are actually really good. Their coffee, even a plain drip is really good.
The bagels are good enough. Id advise you to take your bagel back with you and toast it on your own if thats how you like it. They have clearly lost the plot on what it means to actually toast a bagel and are more concerned with closing the ticket and moving on than getting your order right.
I had a fantastic bagel sandwich and coffee while doing a job nearby. They had exactly what I needed to get my morning started right.
Expensive bagels for what you get. A bacon egg and cheese in nyc is cheaper than here. If you want something quick before the bus, it’ll do, but many better places in my opinion.
I had the bacon, egg & cheese onion bagel with a cranberry oatmeal cookie. Everything was really good, but that cranberry cookie was baked to perfection. It was soft, chewy, and had a nice flavor to it. Ill be sure to go back, while visiting Portland, for one of those delicious cookies.
Bowery Bagels is sooper dooper delicious. I recommend the John Couch on an everything bagel!
Finally, a bagel shop that actually knows how to make bagels. The coffee is good. Adequate variety and selection. Awesome service. Clean, small interior. Perfect for a quick bagel fix. Breakfast sandwiches are excellent. As Portland as it gets!
Delicious bagels
Friendly staff and great bagels. They need a better system for where the line is and where you pick up your order because it gets a little crazy sometimes. Awesome breakfast place though!
Awesome bagels! As with most bagel places, the shmear is on a bit heavy. Mostly my preference for it to be light but just be aware of that. Definitely get the egg sandwich if youre hungry though.
Love this place. I love a bagel and schmeer, takes me back to NYC every time. Good food and friendly staff.
Amazing bagels and schmear. Closest thing to real east coast bagels. The difference in texture from crust to interior is AMAZING. Wide variety of flavors. Id recommend getting a dozen as they get you 13 instead of 12. Only caveat - price - these arent grocery store bagels, so theyre not priced the same as grocery store bagels.
I love this place! The food is delicious, the coffee is great, the staff is nice, and the place does excellent vegan options.
Amazing fresh bagels, delicious sandwiches and vegan options. Can’t go wrong here.
A small shop on Broadway surrounded by homeless craziness they could do with cleaning their shop up a bit, making it a touch nicer and also being a touch more welcoming to their customers. The bagels are ok, I might even say good, but I am no new yorker. Their menu seems a smidge over priced for the quality of the food and experience. With a little investment from the owners to make this a bit nicer of a place, I think it would go a long way, fresh coat of paint, keep it cleaner, a few more lights and nice bar stool area would not take much. Now, if their food was amazing and it was a bit gritty that would be another review, but its not. Dear owners, invest some cash, maybe pay your workers more and maybe they would be nicer and maybe you would have more customers too.
NYC style bagels really good. Has lot of vegan options
Even its full of people & orders, they never gets frustrated, never mess up orders, never redone.Great tasting coffee & food!!Always professional
I go there alot, actually my friend does, they are AWSOME
Fast, friendly, amazing vegan breakfast sandwich (sausage & cheese), and quality coffee. Perfect breakfast to grab on the way to the bolt bus!
Love this place! They have all vegan bagels with vegan schmear, sooo good. Highly recommended!
The coffee and bagels are Very Good. The place is on the small size.
They donate the bagels at the end of the day...
This is probably the best bagel in Portland. They are true New York style bagels. They are boiled and have a firm exterior. I really like their onion toasted with cream cheese, lox, capers, red onion, tomato and cucumber.
Oliver lent bagel with a fried egg is one of my favorite egg sandwiches in Portland.
This is the bagel spot. I didnt know bagels could melt in my mouth, I just didnt know. What else am I missing in life? What else can I discover anew? Thank you Bowery Bagels.
Stumbled upon this place on Broadway and just had a really great sea salt bagel and schmear. It was chewy and slightly crispy on the outside like it supposed to be. The interior is small but really nicely fitted out like a New York subway stop. Looks like they have some interesting offerings, looking forward to coming back for lunch!
It has been difficult, in the last few years, to find a proper New York style boiled and baked bagel in the city of Portland. Many places try to save money by baking and skipping the boiling step entirely. Bowery Bagels does it right! Their bagels have the shiny crisp shell of a classic boiled bagel, with the amazing malty chewiness that you want on the inside. When I was a younger man, I spent a year as a bagel baker in a traditional Jewish deli. I know a good bagel when I taste one, and Bowery does a great job - especially with their plain and onion bagels. I only have one small complaint. Traditional bagels should be taken from the boiler and baked on wet fabric covered boards to prevent sticking. Some bakers, like Bowery, will use cornmeal instead of fabric coated boards. I understand the shortcut, and I dont mind the taste of cornmeal on the bottom of these excellent bagels, but it would be nice to seen them have a go at the grand tradition.
Delicious and chewy! The staff is very friendly. Went on a weekday at 9:30, no line. When you pay to park, just do 15 mins instead of a whole hour. Love the Everything and Salt and Pepper bagels!
Was pleasantly amazed here. Got 2 different bagel sandwiches and was amazed at both. Really good place, great service too.
Probably the best bagel Ive ever had. I got the Parvesan, which is named for vegan parmesan. The vegan options were outstanding and unexpected. Could barely find the place ; signage small and 1 group can easily take up all the seating. Fantastic staff.
Ive been coming in since they opened. Delicious bagels and sandwiches!Great employees too!
Delicious
Fantastic bagels and the man behind the counter was so friendly. Will be returning to get my baker’s dozen.
