Spielman Bagels and Coffee Roasters is a definite place to stop in and grab a drink. The staff is friendly and welcoming. And whether you choose to sit inside or outside, there is plenty of space to spread out.I ordered an iced coffee with a pump of vanilla and oat milk. It was smooth, rich, and flavorful. If I were hungry, I would have ordered a bagel. They looked delicious.I highly recommend this place!
Okay latte. Not special but not bad. I wanted to get a bagel but the woman in front of me took so long ordering I ran out of time for anything but a quick coffee and almost didnt have time for that. Im surprised none of the other staff jumped in to help take orders when the line started forming behind me. Pity too because now I cant review their food, just the middle of the road coffee that could be had any place else in Portland.
Some amazingly fresh bagels and good coffee. I ordered the chicken spread on and onion bagel with lox and it was better than what I get at other places. A bit of a wait but what thats to be expected around brunch time. Didnt mind the wait, and service was friendly however the price was the only issue I could find with the place.
I’ve been here three times and won’t again. The first two times the staff were short and unfriendly but the bagels are awesome so I took it as a bad day or something. Went today and the worker was short and burnt my bagel. They immediately turned around after closing the sale, with zero response then continued chatting with another coworker. I said thank you, and nothing. Then they called out my bagel and I was waiting to see if they’d say anything as I was leaving, nothing so I said thank you and then they actually acknowledged me.
Amazing bagels. Website never works, Staff usually does not answer phone, and the amount of cream cheese they put on a bagel is absolutely criminal. I cant even taste the bagel. Ruined a couple perfectly good shirts.
Id imagine it would be wonderful if the bagels were really fresh....I went on a Friday around 0800. I ordered a bagel sandwhich (which had greens, bacon, jam, and cream cheese) on a sesame bagel. It was wonderful! They didnt skimo on any of the ingredients, and the bagel was crispy and chewy. However, I also ordered an Everything bagel. I figured that an everything bagel is a good marker on how good a bagel place really is. It combines the technique of bagel making with the freshness (everything bagels have a lot of salt as a topping, which makes bagels shriveled and dry if they arent fresh).Well...at 0800 it was clear the bagel was not made that day. maybe not even the day before.... It was awful. shriveled exterior, with no chee, a dry interior that lacked a pliable pull that makes a great bagel. additionally,it was noticably room temperature/cold. Ive literally had better everything bagels from the grocery isle. really, really disappointing.Find out when the bagels are fresh and Im sure its a different experience, but considering I showed up on a weekday right during opening, im not sure when you should go... really confusingif you get a bagel here, at least make sure its super fresh, or have them heat it for you, otherwise... Skip!p.s. they use a card swipe to pay, and Dont let you interact with the machine....so they outright ask you how much you want to tip them, which is a little awkward.
I am not one to normally write a bad review but I have been coming here for almost a year and I am disappointed with Spielman’s disorganization. The bagels are good and the inside of the facility is clean, but I am growing tired of the mistakes they make.I have been ordering the same bagel since I started coming here, and probably 3 out of 4 of the times they get my order wrong. My order is not complicated, I order their Captain Planet bagel with no tomatoes, and they often forget to add an ingredient or three, add an ingredient I didn’t ask for, and sometimes give me an all around different order. Today when I ordered the Captain Planet, which contains hummus, greens, cucumbers, red onions, tomatoes, and sprouts, I received a bagel with lettuce, hummus, and mayonnaise! Additionally, they gave me the two bottom halves of different beagles. This was especially upsetting since I payed $14 for a bagel and drink.Spielman Bagels is unorganized, overpriced and I recommend going to their other location on Division to get better better food and service.
The restaurant attendant treated me and my friend super bad! she was super rude in a simple question of what kinds of sausages they have... she replied as if my friend was retarded when asking this! and was rude all the time besides giving us food without a bag! maybe its because we appeared tired after driving 4 hours to fight in a Jiu jitsu tournament in the city... Im Brazilian and Ive never been treated so badly in a restaurant in all the time I spend in America! it seems that there are still people who judge others by appearance! the food might be good but i will never come back to this place, and i hope they train their staff better!
I came into this place for the first time, and a woman with curly hair and a great attitude greeted me. She went above and beyond when I didn’t know what I wanted. She offered her suggestion and was willing to accommodate my food order. Amazing service!
Great bagels. They do not skimp on the cream cheese here. The whole family was happy with breakfast this morning.
Yummy. Beautiful space inside. Employees always cheerful.
Good value, nice people working, tasty bagels
Best bagels in town, easily. Theres a small line but worth it. Service is historically good. Went in today and everyone inside looked burned out - maybe understaffed/overworked(?). Could barely hear anyone over the loud music (weird since you cant even eat inside), and they still talked in normal voices. Turn the music down so we can more easily order, please?
Pretty friendly staff, but severely overpriced and poor quality food and coffee. All my food was burnt, they somehow managed to make the worst hashbrown Ive ever had, and my coffee was 4/5 full and worse then what I make at home. Im incredibly disappointed, I wouldve been fine with the price of the quality wasnt genuinely unpleasant to consume.
Great placeLove roasted veggie smear and bacon on a cheddar beagle any day.
Got 3 bagel sandwiches and an iced americano. Everything was top notch and the service was friendly
This is an excellent and reasonably priced bagel shop. They got you covered on all the bagel necessities. Flavored cream cheese, bagel sandwiches, wide variety of bagels and great take away cream cheeses and bagels. I made my own kinda bagel breakfast sandwich with the help of the lovely lady behind the counter. She recommended the onion bagel and chive cream cheese. Upon her request I got the onion bagel, chive cream cheese, melted cheddah, and egg. Bomb diggity. It was amazing. Loved the bagel. It had onion baked in it rather than layered on the top. Genius. All the bagel options looked really good. Like really good. Had to go with the recommendation. Did not disappoint. I also gotta say the customer service here is ON POINT. helpful staff both my the lady and dude. They went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and accommodated. Thanks!
I get bagels for customers here every single week, and they never disappoint!
When I saw that Spielman had moved into the spot where Einsteins once was, I was both elated to see a local bagel spot, and nervous as to the fate of my bottomless in-house coffee. Have no fear! Bottomless coffee is here and definitely better than the last. The bagels/bagel sandwiches are quite good as well, and there is plenty of seating for your study session or family bagel outing.
Not impressed at the chef demanding me to put my mask on after I removed my mask for less than a second to sneeze into my elbow, then turns to ignore me as Im not even human anymore.
Go to one of their other locations. You’ll get better service.
Cant beat their sourdough if youre craving a bagel!
Was a longtime customer, staff has a flippant attitude toward customers. Ive experienced and observed customers treated as an inconvenience or a bother. The music is typically so loud it is difficult to communicate with the staff.
Best bagels in town. Solid covid protocols for takeout.
Get your playlist and bagels and coffee here now. Rotating schedule of various deli soups and sandwiches. If there is a soup offering get some to go :-)
The bagels were fantastic; we had a chicken salad sandwich and a pastrami sandwich, as well as some bagels with schmeer. I was super stoked to see they serve Jade Leaf Matcha products.Bummer was that their online ordering system didnt catch my order, so it took double long to make, and I felt bad being in the store front that long. They are actively enforcing social distancing and masks. 👍
Wonderful begals, coffee, staff, everything. Thank you for welcoming me to the neighborhood on my first day in Portland!
Great local bagel shop with bottomless drip coffee, a great variety of bagels and toppings for them. If you like a bagel nice and toasty make sure to request it double toasted as mine definitely could have used a bit more. Seating can be an issue for larger groups, so keep that in mind if your party is more than 4. Would return!
Cashier slumped on the counter when we wanted in. Was greeted with what can I get you? in a not friendly voice. Definitely felt as if I was interrupting their relaxation by wanting to order food. All of the tables were dirty, had to clean them ourselves before sitting down. Food was tasty and decently priced.
This is one of our favorite bagel shops in town! When you eat in they give you the cream cheese on the side. I love being able to choose how much or how little I want to spread on my bagel. If you order veggies with your bagel they also come on the side. You can also order espresso drinks and coffee.
I ordered the lox plate and it was very delicious. The only thing was every table in the place had crumbs and nothing had been wiped down. They werent that busy and I saw multiple employees sitting on their phones instead of maintaining the front. If I was the manager of this place Id talk to my employees about phone usage and cleanliness.
I have 5 stars especially because of the cleanliness and atmosphere here. The bagels are superb- crunchy and flavorful on the outside, moist inside. Staff is wonderful and efficient, the coffee/condiment bar was clean and well stocked. I love it, this is my new regular place!
Just the right amount of pretentiousness.$5 coffee and buttered everything 9/10
Customer service is everything. Greet, appreciate the business, wish a good day. Smile. Bagels are good though not excellent. Once competition moves in this place will be remembered for its poor customer service and non-appreciating behind-the-counter grumpies.
They have the best schmear and bagels, by far, out of any bagel cafe I have been to. Their lox is made in-house and absolutely delicious. Highly recommend if you are going to be visiting/traveling to Portland.
Perfect spot to study, read a book, meet with friends, or just grab a quick bagel and coffee on your way to work. The staff is more like family and the ambiance is cozy and warm. Couldn’t recommend this place enough.
Im come from the old school boiled bagel, perfectly chewy on the inside, mouth watering crunchy on the outside. I remember my first bagel; I was a kid, it was springtime, and my mom took me to this tiny Jewish bagel bakery in upstate New York. It was a plain bagel, toasted with butter. The experience rendered me silent. All I could do was sit there, chew, and savor the delectable flavors. All these 40 years later and here is the Spielman bagel and me reminiscing with each amazing bite. My tastes have evolved, Im partial to their salted herb (I go to Fresh Pot for one because their coffee is beyond) but in a pinch the plain is exactly like my childhood memory, there with my mom, wondering how toasted dough could taste so miraculous. And scene.
Best bagels around!
Never got to have the bagels. they closed an hour early and no one came out to say anything why, they just watched us from inside
Absolutely stellar place for bagels in the NE area. Their homemade bagels are delicious and variety of schmears are great, as well! Their coffee and espressos are delicious. The space is relaxed and comfortable enough to spend a few hours if youre looking to get work done
Pretty solid bagel shop, menu felt a little limited but very eclectic.
I come in this place every weekend. Their bagels and bagel sandwiches are great. The staff is very friendly. The service is not. I get one sandwich and a shmeer usually. My wait times is always at least 15 minutes..NEVER less. I just waited 25 minutes for 1 bagel sandwich and a drink. Your food is great, but come on folks, youre a bagel shop. Get your act together on timing, its just not there, at all.Just in yesterday again, around 2, was super fast
This place is good. The only problem I have is how long it takes for them to get ur bagel sandwich ready. As someone that works on operations and logistics this part of their process can be improved. It’s great for being local and having loads of works space, and also outdoor sitting
Great bagel place. They have all different kinds but the cheddar and jalapeno cheddar or likely my favorites. They make a really great egg and sausage breakfast sandwich but I think the real star is the bacon, arugala, jam, and cream cheese sandwich. Its really solid. The coffee is good and the atmosphere is laid back if you want to just relax and enjoy your caffeine. They have a few tables front as well that are shaded most of the morning so feel free to bring your dog if youre so inclined.
If you dont mind waiting forever for a decent bagel then this is the place for you. I used to go in every Friday but I just cant commit 20 minutes of my morning for a snack anymore. Bagels get 3 or 4 stars but the derps that work here, just wow, zero.
Okay bagels and less than okay service. I’ve been here many times and have only been treated politely once. Not to mention they mess up my order often enough that it’s no longer worth going. You’re better off going to New Seasons or driving to Henry Higgins
What kind of bagel shop runs out of bagels on a Sunday morning be for noon??Been great for a while. Fast service, great food. A pleasure going there
Both this location and their Lovejoy location are amazing! You can taste the authenticity of the mother dough in the sourdough they use. Sandwiches are awesome but my favorite is just a classic everything (so garlic-y it’s crazy delicious) with butter and a cup of their delicious roasted coffee. Best breakfast weekday or weekend!
I generally enjoy the food and coffee here, however, I had a bad experience on my last visit. I arrived early on Sunday morning when there was hardly anyone in the store. The menu board was not on the wall as it typically is and when I asked for a menu I was brusquely pointed to the entrance of the store with an over there where there was a stack. In addition, the person taking my order was wearing something that was bordering on a crop top. Im all for free expression, but I really dont want to be looking at someones belly hair while Im trying to decide what I want to eat for breakfast.
Informal coffee and bagel spot. Fantastic bagels; so many choices (go early for best selection).
Tried ordering multiple times from GrubHub. Canceled my order every time.
Great bagels and spread option. Easy to stop in and take some to go or sit and relax at a table in the space. I ordered a little of everything for a group. Wasnt a bad flavor amongst the whole bunch.
Best bagels in town. Love the owners and their long history in Portland as locals brewing coffee and making bagels. Few things are truly more Portland. Few will understand, because you can only taste it. Next time your in if you get a chance to talk to Rick the owner. Never a nicer guy to chat with about anything. Kind of like a day time bartender.
Best bagels in town. Get there early to avoid the crowds. Could be a little more streamlined to get food quicker, but it’s okay. Staff is always super friendly!
A really good bagel joint and cafe. They have a large selection of their signature bagels with a variety of flavors and types. Toppings run the range from simple spreads to fill sandwiches. They have prepared coffee and teas as well as bottled beverages. Staff are friendly and quirky. The bathroom was clean and they have WiFi. Parking is available from the street and they are on a transit route. There is a bike rack down the block.
Great coffee and you can drink as much as you want! Bagels are good, reasonably priced. The girl who served us hooked us up with some lox and veggies for free, and they were good as heck.I like this place, and the people who work here are defo not rude. Chances are if you got bad service here it was entirely a reflection of your own behavior.
Great bagel selection. Bagels are fresh and made daily. Spielman really pays attention to the details. Shaved vegetables, lox, and, schmears. Hot bagel sandwiches and excellent lattes! Love visiting here
WAY overpriced for a cup of coffee and tough bagel. The coffee is good, but the service is slow and too expensive.
This place tastes greatHowever they did get my girlfriend’s order wrong (they just made two of what I ordered). Also, the line can end up out the door. So make sure you get there early!Good coffee too.
A nice simple place, you can get bagels and a few different sandwiches, coffee and tea. You dont need much more. The inside is rather bare, as is the exterior, but the food is good. The prices seem quite steep for bagels though. 6 sesame bagels and enough cream cheese for them was $13. Its not that crazy, but more than I expected when I walked in.
There arent enough bagel places in NE Portland so Spielman is a welcome addition. The bagels are excellent and the coffee is really good for a bagel joint. The drip coffee tasted naturally sweet, their own roast.
Great bagels and delicious cold brew! As someone visiting from New England, this place was fantastic. I will certainly visit again when I am out in Portland.
Fresh bagels and coffee served in a warm and friendly environment. Busy on the weekends so get there early. Theyre always playing good tunes in the morning.
I have it on good authority that these are the best bagels in Portland. They have a very good traditional assortment and some less ordinary. My favorite is fennel and golden raisin. Wonderful, subtle flavors. Nice schmears. They even have an assortment of vegetarian offerings.Im not wild about their coffee and there is no padded seating. But those are the only flaws.Friendly service. On street parking and a small lot in the back.Definitely a great place to go for your bagel fix.
My bagel was good. Price seemed slightly high, the staff seemed less than friendly and more could be done to make them look like they are open. At 7am I was not sure they were open. Dark outside and dimly lit inside, made them seem closed.
Great bagels, but why did they remove the menu board from the wall? Rudely pointed to the menus at the front.
Consistently some of the best bagels in Portland. A little expensive for the bad lattes [fr they need to QC their espresso], but they have the best bagel sandwiches Ive had in town. I would like more cream cheese, please, but that is a personal problem and they are probably trying to do my heart a favour. The service here was crazy-slow [compared to their location on Division] about 12-18 months back, but it seemed like they were always understaffed or training new people. I saw a lot of the same faces this time and service was fast despite my order being in the middle of a long rush, so Im guessing theyve found their groove.
This was my first time going to this location and I likely will not be going back. We got there shortly after 12 pm and they were already sold out of bagels. We decided to settle for the day old bagels so we could still sit and work. They decided they were going to close early but they didnt tell us or any of the other customers that. Instead of telling us directly, they put a sign on the door, started blasting music, and putting chairs up on empty tables in what felt like a very clear message that they wanted us to leave without actually speaking with us directly.I know we got there after peak-bagel time, but if youre supposed to be open 3 more hours, you should be prepared with enough bagels for the day. Also, while bagels are your main draw, youre also a coffee shop with other offerings. Even if youre out of bagels, that doesnt mean you should just close up 2 hours early, especially when there are still customers inside. If a place does have to close up early, for whatever reason, the appropriate thing to do is inform the customers that that is what is happening instead of passive aggressively making the space less comfortable.
I need this place to open the one closer to my house. Hopefully this 5 star review will help that happen! Great bagels, good schmears, and chill vibe inside. Cant wait for them to widely release this great jalapeno cheddar bagel we had! YUM!!!
One of the few bagel joints that opens at 6am. Great bagels at reasonable prices, ample seating, friendly staff. I appreciate that they always have a copy of the NY Times.
Only excellent and amazing if you like delicious and crispy bagels with great flavors like golden raisin and fennel or jalapeo and cheese. Not good if you want mini loaves of bland bread some people call bagels. Only go here if you want some of the best bagels ever. Former New Yorkers included.
The quality of the food is not nearly good enough to justify the absolutely terrible service from this staff. Make sure to check your order if you take it to-go and dont expect an apology if they give you the wrong thing.
Really Popular place. great bagels, unlimited, bottomless coffee, solid wifi, customer service & people are good, and plenty of space for mobile work, kids, and groups. Pricing is good starting at 3.00 - 9.00 for bagel sandwiches. Centrally located, easy access, and plenty of street parking thats not metered.
They were closed early with no note and nothing on their voicemail. Thanks for denying a bagel. Also their bagels are mediocre on a good day.
Awesome fresh bagels and good coffee. Everything is quite tasty. Would recommend 11/10.
Excellent bagels. The staff has issues. While I havent experienced the rudeness others say theyve experienced, there seems to be a lack of engagement with the customers. Ive been going to this store at least once a week ever since they opened -- any other store I would be greeted, if not by name, at least with some indication that they recognized me -- but not here. Its like Im a one-time customer every time I drop in.Kinda feels like my original home in that respect. New York City.
Great REAL bagels. Most places just have round bread and pass it off as bagels, but here you get the real deal. Sadly, their coffee is just okay and its actually pretty overpriced for a quick snack. Still, nice bagels.
Real bagels! I think they overdo it a little bit on the baked-on toppings, but it doesnt really matter because real bagels are so good. Their lox plate is $10 and worth every penny.
Ive been going there for over 2 years, and the bagels are always crisp, and fresh. The coffee is tasty and the service is great. I will continue going as long as they are in the neighborhood
Best bagels in town? Spielman gets my vote. The salt and pepper is the family favorite.
Bagle was very good and served warm, decent quantity of lox, nice smooth cream cheese. Took 15min. to prepare despite there being four people workingNot sure about the whole rude thing. Im also from NY and there is a different between rude and direct. No one was rude and they thanked me for waiting.Coffee was fine which in a coffee city means it was good.I will return next time Im in the area and see if they can beat this prep time.
Took 30 minutes to get a to-go bagel, which they forgot to toast :-( Henry Higgins also makes higher quality bagels.
Great bagels and cream cheese selection. Always tastes fresh and the coffee is really good. Their egg sandwiches are good and they offer vegetarian sausage.
Delicious bagel breakfast sandwiches! I ordered an everything with egg patty and salmon schmeer (salmon cream cheese spread) This place is packed during the weekend! Great selection of bagels, spreads & coffee.
I do love the bagels here as well as their coffee. However it usually takes 15 minutes to get a toasted bagel with a schmear. Dont be in a hurry!
Delicious bagels with assortment of flavored cream cheese or bagel sandwich options. Reasonably priced. Busy on weekends, be prepared to wait a little.
I note that others have said how rude these folks are. Ditto! And Im from New York where rude is normal. I bought a sack of Bagels, eight to be exact, and the cashier hands me a bagel card which gives you $ 3.00 off after you buy 9. The person in charge, a woman, probably the owner sees the clerk giving me the bagel card, chastises the clerk and makes me give her back the Bagel card because its only supposed to be for sandwiches. Can you f------ believe that? So when I say I wish I could get a refund and walk out the door? No way, too late for that. Never going back again even if the Bagels were the best in the world, which they are not. Oh, by the way when a customer asks if you would please put his garlic bagels in a separate bag, dont say Okay and then not do it.
Great place for a bagel sandwich and bottomless coffee. There are vegetarian options. Very reasonably priced.
Good variety of bagels and spreads. Fast service and a friendly staff. Cool easy to find place.
Fresh bagels (loved the Seedy one), tasty options, excellent coffee. What else does one need for breakfast?
Very good customer service, I got a delicious egg and cheese bagel. If I had one complaint it was that I wanted a sesame bagel and I probably had a dozen sesame seeds on the entire sandwich.
