These are tasty, but the texture just wasn’t doing it for me. I like my old-fashioned donuts to be crispy flaky sweet on the outside and just cakey, moist, and tearable on the inside. There were lots of flavors offered at Blue Star and the workers were super friendly and helpful. However, the texture is hard for me to get over. The line was also quite substantial, which is fine because they were pretty tasty and in a good location - just something to note.
Stopped by this Blue Star on a Saturday afternoon and some flavors are already sold out but fortunately I got what I wanted, the Mexican Hot Chocolate. Its pretty chocolaty with a hint of spicy, not too sweet and the cake texture is good.Im not a huge man of donuts but I gotta admit that Blue Stars presentations are always very appealing. Friendly and efficient service too.
Always stop by when I make a trip to Oregon. I love their old fashioned donuts! My favorites are the raspberry rosemary, lemon poppy and the original buttermilk old fashioned. They are a bit greasy though but still delicious. Not overly sweet either. Purchased 4 OF donuts and the total was a little over $16 so it is on the pricier side. Worth trying and prefer them over Voodoo.
How did I miss reviewing blue star! your donuts are special and they live up to hype! I call them michelin star of donuts. I am bummed that you had to close few of your locations and stopped making your signature creme brulee donut. But I still have a wide variety to choose from
The staff were very friendly. We got there around noon and they were almost sold out of everything. They, unfortunately, do not sell the creme brûlée at this location.☹️We still got ten different kinds to try. The Tropical fruit, Raspberry Belmont and Matcha were our favorites. The Apple fritter and Almond ganache, unfortunately, both tasted stale. The over $40 price we paid for ten donuts was an experience but I wouldn’t do it again. Also, be prepared to stand in line as there was a line out the door. Their shop was very small and only allowed for two customers at a time to order inside.I suggest going early if you’re wanting to try all their varieties. The hype about this place is worth a try if you enjoy donuts.
The two young staff members were super upbeat and friendly. Probably because they work in a donut paradise. The menu on the outside of the building shows, like, six donuts on it. Don’t be discouraged like I was. There are more flavors available than that.I got my fav—lemon/lime curd. It was $4. Maybe that’s a lot of money for one donut, but it was worth it. I appreciated the generous amount of filling as it is the best part. Blue Star even made the donut tall, if you will, to stuff more filling in there. And they only use the highest quality ingredients because this is Portland and food is a religion here.
Donuts are pricey, which in itself isnt an issue if they delivered on flavor and quality. I ordered three donuts; the blueberry bourbon basil, the raspberry rosemary, and the chocolate buttermilk bergamot. The secondary flavors were all non-existent. The blueberry did have some bourbon flavor, and was slightly floral, but not basil. The raspberry lacked any kind of rosemary, and the chocolate had no bergamot. On top of all of this, the donuts were soooooo greasy that the grease saturated through the paper they were in, through the bottom of the donut box, and onto my car seat, which really irritated me. Its a general indicator that they fried when the oil wasnt hot enough. That all being said, the donuts were good if you expect just a raspberry or chocolate donut or whatever, but if you actually expect to taste any of the other flavors they claim are in here youll be disappointed. And I really hope they figure out their oil situation, because its literally not acceptable to have oil stains on my car seat. wth
I love blue star donuts. Nobody else makes donuts like they do. The donuts are fresh, unique, and one of a kind. The flavors are so wonderfully selected and the brioche dough is perfect for these donuts you have to be quick though, or you may miss out as they tend to sell out fast. I do not live close to blue star donuts but gladly make the trip whenever I can because they are just so good.
My husband and I went in for something specific and we were met with a very very sweet guy named Gregory. Not only did he help us with the donuts but he also helped answer very specific things. I was absolutely happy with the service he provided. I highly suggest going to Blue Star. I will be recommending this company to others for a long time. Thanks Gregory and thank you blue star for a great experience.
I dont personally feel like the donuts were all that great Im only visiting Portland and so far the restaurant scene has been absolutely phenomenal both flavor and service wise. So when this place came heavily recommended I was happy to visit. They are very pretty donuts to look with a great presentation and the staff was friendly. The flavor overall was lacking though I found some creams to be too heavy and some to be too light the glaze was a healthy balance not fond of anything else though. The actual donut itself was just a standard donut maybe a bit on the heavier side whereas I prefer mine to be on the lighter side but thats personal preference.Overall would have a tough time to recommend as the flavors were unique but bland and the dough itself was a bit stodgy also maybe not an issue to all but the price was on the higher side with I think each donut was about $3.50 I just cant justify unless Im really getting a good donut.
Our family loved the donuts from here! The chocolate bergamot was delicious and a favorite among our family. We came back multiple times during our stay! Bridger and Gregory made our first day in Portland amazing with their hospitality and generosity
A fair selection of donuts. I heard this place was better than others in town, but I wasnt completely wowed by the taste.. I got the orange olive oil donut which was very good, but the raspberry basil was a little too sweet and slightly greasy. Also a bit pricey; 4 donuts was $14.
Busy, line was decent, moved quickly sometimes though. The taste and flavors were worth the wait however. There were about two or three options inside that were not on the sign as well.
Unique donut options that were delicious and fluffy. The Mexican chocolate one currently available was a top favorite for my group.
If youre going to get donuts in Portland you absolutely have to stop here! Ive never been much of a donut person but the Mexican hot chocolate donut was amazing, as was everything we tried. Theres so many unique and interesting flavors that you have to get a couple just to try. Trendy place and the line got a little long but still worth the wait.
Ah-MAZE-ing doughnuts! They were super good about only having 1 customer in at a time and the long line outside moved quickly. We got the raspberry rosemary, apple butter, lemon, O.G., classic, and my least favorite (but still good) Mexican chocolate.
So disappointed on this donuts. You could easily get something way better and tastier than blue star for a third of the price. They claim to have a French recipe and use frases as “Mexican chocolate” but at the end their texture feels stale and their toppings taste so sweet that passes as just plain sugar, three of the different glazed ones that we bought tasted pretty much all the same. The custard filling was the most disappointing of all since has a lemonish twist that leaves a unpleasant aftertaste and it has a watery consistency.
Are the donuts amazingly delicious? Yes.Are they worth $24 for a half dozen? No.
Few things in life are tastier than a fresh Blue Star Raspberry Rosemary Old Fashioned donut. Seriously you can’t beat the thick, crispy fried outside crust. And the glaze!!! Sweet, herbal, fruity, zingy- this donut hits all the bases. For a more subtle flavor, with the same amazing texture, try the Chocolate Buttermilk Bergamot Old Fashioned. While I LOVE the old fashioned varieties, Blue Star makes all of their donuts exceptionally, and I recommend sampling as many as you possibly can. They are worth every penny and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Amazing flavors! Line was long as only 2 people allowed on the store at a time. We tried to order.online for pick up but it has to be done the night before. Parking was difficult to find. 10 out of 10 would stop again. Bought a variety so we could sample several donuts. Cold brew was very acidic and quite bitter but donuts were bomb
Arrived at 4:00 as part of a daylong birthday donut crawl and they’d already thrown out all of the donuts. *sad trombone*
Amazing and delicious! I had their carrot seasonal donut.
I’m sorry. I prefer voodoo over Blue Star. Theirs just seem more flavorful. Service was great. I got the maple bacon and also the creme brûlée. The creme brûlée has a smokiness that I kinda enjoyed but there wasn’t anything really special about it. Also, the maple bacon seemed to be lacking maple flavor. Glad I tried it but I won’t go out of my way next time.
Excellent vegan and regular donuts. Ill definitely go back.
A bit conflicted about doing this, considering its my first ever review, but the experience that we had this particular BSD today was not as enjoyable as imagined. My housemates and I went to Portland to visit friends in the area and had been recommended to try out the donuts at this nearby establishment. It being The Covid Times, we tried pre-ordering some donuts online for pickup, but it wouldnt go to completion.*A group of us (5 folx) ended up going to the actual brick-n-mortar to order at the counter and found that only 2 customers can go indoors at a time. Again, totally understandable with the pandemic. To try to expedite the process, since there was already a line, we decided to gather everyones donut(s) request and get a box of a dozen. Should be easy, right?Admittedly, there was some confusion on our part when we came in. We initially ordered an Assorted Half Dozen (bRaiN NoT wOrk in mOrNing), later corrected it to an Assorted Dozen thinking we could pick out our own donuts. That was our bad, full stop. That said, though, it would have been helpful to have the difference between a dozen vs. an assorted dozen clarified *before* the order was boxed up, because the dude that did it clearly seemed ANNOYED AF at our misunderstanding and shoved the box on the counter, hinting that we should just take it and leave. No offer of modifying the order, no sorry, its just not our policy, nothing. I wouldnt have tipped if I knew that was the service wed be getting.Look, it was our first time here. As people who have also worked in food service, we get that it gets tiresome to deal with tourist antics. But you would think that it would be common enough to develop a little patience for it. There was a line but the demand wasnt hectic enough to be so worked up. The person at the register kept saying, The next time you come in, just order XYZ instead, but I honestly dont know if wed be back in general. So, for the staff that was working the morning shift at the Mississippi location on 15 Aug 2021:The gal at the register -- We appreciate your help and your commiseration as we were leaving. But, if we could offer some input, if you notice that a customer seems a bit confused about the menu, please take the time to clarify their order before sending it through. The guy boxing up the donuts -- Your obvious exasperation made us feel unwelcome, even though we mentioned that it was our first time there. Thats now the impression well have about this place if we decide to visit our friends again. I dont care if youre a staffer or a manager -- build a bit of empathy, dude.*We later learned at the shop that an order could only be done at least a day BEFORE coming in, which makes total sense, since they make extra donuts to have enough for walk-in customers -- but there was not a clear indication/disclaimer of that when we looked online. (Of course, when donuts are on the brain, seeing As soon as possible checked anywhere = NOMZ NAOW)
Ordered their blueberry bourbon and Mexican hot chocolate and my goodness...I have never had a more perfect donut. The blueberry had a light and refreshing taste to it. The Mexican hot chocolate I wasn’t expecting to have a spicy kick to, though it was manageable. The frosting on top was KILLER - thick, rich, creamy, chocolate goodness.Absolutely stop here for your next donut fix!
The staff was very friendly and quick, even though they got a last minute big order they were trying to fill. The donuts were amazing as always.
These donuts are a little spendy and only ok tasting. Not like gross or anything, but just an OK donut. SO super greasy though, just completely through the napkin and carton they were in! On the flip side, the cold brew was great!
Delicious. Delectable. Divine.Whenever Im in Portland I make a stop at one of the Blue Star Locations. I love their flavour combinations, the craft of their doughnuts and quality. My go to selections include: Apple Cider Fritter, Maple Bacon & Meyer Lemon & Key Lime Custard Filled. What I love about....Apple Cider Fritter: crisp, sweet & tartMaple Bacon: hint of maple in the icing and fresh, wonderful bacon pieces (would love more bacon, of course)Meyer Lemon & Key Lime: the blend of sweet and tart, custard filling in a pillowy powdered doughnut.
Great donuts!! Sophisticated recipes that are fun and so tasty! We got three 😮 the blueberry Basil one, the passion fruit and cacao nibs, and then the Mexican hot chocolate. All so unique and different, seemed like a great combination. The employees were super friendly and helpful. Its a must try and definitely a place to stop while in Portland.
Better than voodoo and much less of a wait. Highly recommend the blueberry bourbon basil flavor, but all their donuts are delicious!
Great donuts, I got 4 and coffee for 20 bucks
I have been a fan of Blue Star donuts for a few years now. I wrote a review of their Northwest Potland location back then. This is review is for their Northeast Portand location since the Northwest location is permanently closed. This is a must stop by treat for me every time I visit Portland. I love the unique and intriguing flavors and the quality is second to none. This time around we had the tried and true butrermilk old fashioned, the chocolate bergamot old fashioned and thr blueberry bourbon basil. I loved them all but the blueberry bourbon stood out for beautifully blended tastes and texture. Currently the shop only allows two people in at a time (the space is smaller than the old northwest space) and due to covid restrictions. There was a line on the Sunday morning we visited. The donuts are $3.75-4.50 on average. Various beverages are available too but I eat my donuts straight up so the flavors come out. Store hours are limited and donuts do tend to run out. Go early for the best selections.
Great taste. Not too sweet. Would recommend
This place is amazing!!! I thought the doughnuts would be a hype, but I was wrong! We didn’t know the place is closed Monday through Wednesday and sells out even on a Thursday. The person on the counter was super nice. When I told him that we were heading out that day and won’t be able to come back tomorrow, he found us one last OG doughnut and also gave us chai tea Brew on the house. This type of service just made our Portland experience better!! Thank you!! And needless to say, the doughnut was yummmmmmmy. My husband doesn’t like sweets or doughnuts usually, and we were literally fighting over this kind be doughnut :))
Delicious donuts!! We got the Orange Rosemary and the Tropical coconut passion fruit. The wait in line is long and it doesn’t move very fast. They ran out after us and had to send the rest of the line home. I would suggest preordering if you can.I didn’t love the Nitro Chai but that’s because I prefer the spices over the actual black tea flavor.
Creme Brulee donut was quite unique. This place is MUCH better than the over rated tourist trap, Voodoo Donuts. However this place is quite pricey per donut coming around $3 per. But the quality is amazing. My favorite must have is the chocolate buttermilk donut, but its on break right now. With multiple locations, its easy to grab on the go. For tourist, I would usually grab a few for the ride back home. It even held in the fridge a few days after getting back. Quite amazing.
Ubsurdly overpriced, they sell semi decent quality donuts for easily triple of price of normal ones.
This is the second time we have eaten at a Blue Star Donut location, and we once again very pleased. If you are looking to elevate your donut eating game, this is the place! Beware though, after your first bite any donuts made by the other guys will taste like bile in your mouth. Seriously, these donuts are that good. Make sure to grab a passion fruit and cocoa nib donut, that is by far my favorite one!
Where do i begin? This was heaven for me. Blue star offers creative unique gourmet donuts and each one is better than the other. Specially Loved the blueberry basil(like who thinks of combining these two?!) And pistachio rose. I have no regrets eating 3 donuts each of the two days i was in Portland.
As a customer, you should feel welcome; I stood outside of this establishment without acknowledgment. As a non-white person, I felt unwelcomeAfter waving at one of the workers from outside of the building, the employee waved at me to come to it, in an unpleasant gesture, from my observation. The 🍩 I purchased was good, but the customer service was less than par. I must add, I went to another before this location, and the worker had a pleasant personality
On a recommendation, I went here at 7:15 am, right after the store opened and got a dozen donuts. The flavors were creative, but the donuts were incredibly dense and many of them were very stale, even first thing in the morning. And for the subpar freshness and quality, the price of $50 for a dozen was an overcharge.
Wild how good the doughnuts are here. I know Portland is known for voodoo, but honestly, this place is more than on par with their flavours and quality. I didnt get a chance to try any of the drinks, but the doughnuts are really good! I had a chocolate bergamot and a tropical paradise. Not greasy or overly sweet, unique flavours and quality ingredients. The coconut flakes were still soft and the chocolate doughnut was very light. Service was quick and ordering was easy, and we didnt have to wait in line or order online in advance. Overall, a very solid doughnut shop to give any foodie a run for their money.
I have been a fan since day one! My favorite is the Raspberry Rosemary Old Fashioned. Though, they’re all great! They do a slightly different take on the Maple Bacon which is my son’s favorite donut. The employees are always friendly, and we’ll make a special trip across the river for these now because they’re so good.
We got off the plane at PDX and came straight here.
This shop is great, located in a quaint little neighborhood out of the way of the big city. Delicious doughnuts, would definitely recommend the buttermilk old fashioned donut. 10 out of 10, would recommend!
Donuts are good but they sell out very quickly. The business hours are not realistic.
Picked up some donuts on a Saturday morning, right as they opened, and spend $35 on 8 donuts (w/ tip). Didnt realize until I got home that each of them were inedibly stale. Feel like its fair to assume at that price a specialty donut shop would be serving fresh donuts. Sad to say, but goodbye forever.
Spending $45 on delivery with the only instructions for no cake donuts and received only that type. Their cake donuts are dry, dense and you can barely taste the flavors. I wish, if they were sold out (which I doubt because we ordered early enough) we could’ve been contacted. I would hope whoever boxed the order would know the difference in donuts since they work at a donut shop. So we will not be ordering from them again.
I tried the raspberry rosemary buttermilk donut which was divine. The rosemary flavor was really subtle but delicious. I definitely have to go back to enjoy their pretty shop and I need to try one of each flavor of donut. Staff was fine and the checkout experience was fast. No outdoor seating that I saw, though. Cant wait to go back next time Im in the area!
Best doughnuts I ever had. Excellent
Small shop, and they often run out of doughnuts by noon, but they doughnuts are pretty amazing.
Blue star has the best donuts Ive ever had in my life. That being said, they run out of a lot of flavors very quickly. And I find it extremely disappointing that they are open for business, but they dont let you use their restrooms. Not ok. Covid or not, If youre taking peoples money, you should let them use your restrooms. All the other shops I visited in Portland did so.
Really unique and delicious donuts. I went at 8am on a weekday and there was only one other person there. The donuts were pricy at roughly 3-4 dollars but theyre a real treat and since we were visiting from out of town we were glad to split a few to try! I really liked the Blueberry Bourbon Cake donut, it was amazingly rich.
Must Try: Buttermilk old fashioned and Raspberry old fashioned.Having tried donuts at Pips, blue star didnt disappoint at all. Great texture and flavor, glazing on buttermilk old fashioned was perfect.
I ended up at randomly. Ive heard some mixed reviews of this chain. If I hadnt been going as the results of winning a raffle of sorts I probably would have passed it by. Is it over-hyped? Definitely but if you enjoy long lines, having donuts sold out before you can try them. Also that means paying a premium for an item you probably didnt intend to eat. Inside decor was clean but lacking character/soul... will not be returning! Which means one less person to wait behind.
I was expecting more. The flavors are fair. But the textures of the donuts were not good.My fritter was so tough, it just tried to bully me for my lunch money. I got a chocolate almond ganache, the almonds werent stuck to the ganache and was very messy. The old fashion was a little bland. The shop is very clean and the employees were very polite.
WAY better than that overrated tourist trap Voodoo Donuts
Such a great experience, service... and donuts and that coffee mmm. Had a few hours before our flight out and wanted to get a last taste of Portland. Arrived just before closing but the cashier went above and beyond to make sure that everyone had what we wanted. Was able to bring some back to the East coast and everyone loved these heavenly circles. Thanks Portland! Stay weird!
Best donuts Ive had in Oregon. A little pricey fir donuts but still worth it
They ran out of the glazed brioche at 9:30 am, which was unfortunate so we got the old fashioned glazed for comparison. The dough is somewhere between a traditional old fashioned that dries your mouth instantaneously and moist cake. The periphery is crispy, but not hard. However the oil soaked through about 1/4 inch through the dough which was a bit heavy for me after half a donut. The glaze was thick and sweet.
Had the most excellent Buttermilk Doughnut.
Great donuts, long wait. Worth it!
Theyd sold out and closed early the first day we tried and were sold out of several flavors the next day. There was a donut reservation option on their website, which Ill use in the future. But when we finally got them, the donuts were quite good. We tried the Buttermilk Old Fashioned, Raspberry Rosemary Old Fashioned, and the seasonal / special Apple Bourbon Crumb. They were very good, but not perfect. They were *slightly* greasy and a bit too sweet. The over-sweetness was most detrimental to the raspberry rosemary because the pure sugary-ness overpowered what could have been some wonderfully subtle floral and fruity flavors. That actually made me prefer the plain old fashioned, since it was less conflicted. But in a perfect (slightly less sugary) world, I wish I could have preferred the raspberry rosemary. The apple bourbon was quite good and had appropriate apple and spice flavor, but it was a special so we may never see it again.Texture-wise, these were excellent (other than the slight greasiness). But they had a good crisp on them and a wonderfully-cakey inside.Im not a coffee drinker, but Im told by my cohort that their coffee was exceptional.Note to self: If we return, try the Mexican Hot Chocolate flavor to see if the bitterness of the chocolate plays better with the slightly-too-sweet glazes.
