Warning: NOT for vegetariansThis place is super cute, the people are nice, and the market is great, but I would definitely avoid if youre a vegetarian. I came here for first time a couple nights ago after hearing so many good things, got a huuuuuge chilli relleno burrito which I enjoyed until I found huge chunks of beef and chicken at the bottom. My guess is they cook the beans or rice with these ingredients to add flavor? Great if you eat meat, really pretty horrible if you are a vegetarian. I got really upset, and I wont be going back. Im sad to miss out on supporting a local spot, but I take not eating meat pretty seriously and this majorly bummed me out.Meat-eaters: Go to town! Vegetarians: Id skip this spot.
Love this place. Highlights include authentic food at solid prices and in a classic setting. Walk through the mercado to get to the restaurant where the guy at the counter sings along with the mariachi music, takes your order quickly via pen and pad, and calculates your total in his head before ripping off your order number and handing it to you. You can either dine in or take out, passing the wait time either by sitting at one of the tables; adding quarters to their many gumboil/tattoo/tchotchke machines; or wandering the aisles of the mercado. The mercado has a fantastic selection of spices, fresh produce, baked goods, and a packed inventory of Mexican goods from sweets to cleaning products to pottery and so on. The place is no fuss in the best way- every one is friendly, you get good food, and you pay a good price. Highly recommend. We grabbed some carnitas tacos, al pastor tacos, shrimp tacos, and a side of beans and rice. All were great.
The menu has vegetarian items but when I went here hoping for some tacos I was informed that absolutely nothing is vegetarian, let alone vegan. The rice has chicken in it and the beans have pork in them. I realize some places choose to not offer any vegan or vegetarian items but the fact that their menu offers vegetarian items when they absolutely are not vegetarian is pretty egregious.
The restaurant is super good authentic Mexican food. The store is amazing too with tons of meat choices and the flan is AMAZING!
I work in St. Johns sometimes I come to this place because my coworker mentioned it to me. I personally love the asada quesadillas with guacamole straight 🔥🔥🔥 Going today to try the special breakfast burrito for the first time!!!
The big short Mexican lady that’s always at the cashier Register is a theif! I go in there all the time and I’ve already heard her argue with other customers because she over charges people. Today wasn’t a good day for me so I thought I’d make myself feel a little better and buy some carne asada. My bill for what everything I bought should of only been $82.75 and she charged me $125!
Cabeza, Lengua, Tripe, and Pastor tacos were delicious. Habanero salsa was delicious. Cant wait to work through the rest of the menu. Good pricing.
Love the pan dulce and groceries they have. Nice little place.
This has always been one of my favorite spots to get some tacos at an affordable price. Throughout tree years, they have increased their prices, but are still among the most affordable ones in town. The flavor and quality of the tacos here are just amazing. This visit, I only opted for three tacos- carne asada, chorizo, and pastor. All three were wonderful! They also have some fresh made sauces to go with the tacos that are just unbelievable.
Best Burrito Ive ever had anywhere . Buy the Medio Litro Coca Colas as well, real sugar in old glass bottles...
The staff here is very friendly and make you feel welcome everytime . Theres always a great variety of prepared meats for a great mexican meal. (There is also a taqueria located in the store.)Definitely my favorite Mexican store in St. Johns.
Excellent food. One of my favorite hole in the walls in Portland. Incredible burritos, and big enough to last more than one meal.
Burrito supreme is a banger with Chorizo. Great place to go eat some authentic Mexican food.
Absolutely awesome. I hadnt been there in a while because I moved further away. But I came all the way back for the pastor burrito and it was just as Id remembered. Amazing. For me, its truly one of my all time favorite meals.
Youve probably been to cleaner restaurants in Portland - and definitely more visual appealing restaurants. But where can you stumble through a grocery store into a wonderland of spicy Mexican food? This food is a journey not just because of the Narnian entrance to this magical restaurant, but because the food is delicious and can be super spicy (if you want). The prices are great, and the salsa bar is excellent. If you fill yourself up too much, you can always roll down the hill until you hit the side of Occidental Brewing and sip a classic Kolsch until you are able to carry yourself home.
The food tasted fine but overall we had a pretty frustrating experience. Everyone in line behind us got their food before us. We asked twice about our order and they didn’t seem to know. It was three tacos and a bean and cheese burrito…30 minute wait for that lol. I asked for no cilantro on my chorizo tacos, there was a heaping amount of cilantro on the tacos. I even tipped $5 on a $17 order. Won’t be going back here after this experience.
Legendary food. I was in Portland for 3 days and ate here 3 times. Slightly unusual setup but dont let it turn you away.
Fruit you wont find anywhere else nearby. Tamales are average on Sunday. Advice is casual. Thats okay. You might find something new to try.
The best authentic Mexican food in north Portland.
Really good food! Fresh, Fast, Authentic, HUGE! Phone in ordering is a big plus, but the circuits get too busy at lunchtime.
Small business with congenial employees. Practice your Spanish at this ethnic foods grocery store. I always get a bag or two of really good chicharrones. Well stocked.
Great tacos, but the salsa usually is too old.
Most boring, bland burrito that Ive had in years and much worse, there was a big chunk of steak in my vegetarian burrito. I have medical digestive issues so on top of being disgusting Im going to be sick all night. Horribly disappointed.
The burritos are large and the steak is really good
Love this place. The grocery store has a ton of good stuff too.
Totally worth stumbling upon the place, I had torta so yummy totally recommend
Best breakfast burrito Ive had while on the west coast. Chorizo is a bit harder and meatier than what Im used to, but it is well spiced and blends well with the eggs. Quality tortilla, rice and beans. All of the meats are good.
Great Tacos! Visiting from out of town and these reminded me of Tacos from home in San Francisco. Store also has a small grocery store, bakery and meat market. Very authentic
Mexican groceries including a butchery, with a good taqueria in the back.
I love the restaurant in the back and I have been grabing a burrito every time I pass by
Amazing food!!!! But, the host at the front (guy with glasses) has hot to be the worst and rudest person ever!!! I love the food but his energy makes me not want to come as often...
Located in the back of a convenient store, many influencers I have come across will not go here because they feel its beneath them to be seen in such places. This place has authentic, real and simple Mexican food. It may not feel like home cooked food, but it tastes really good and fresh. Several items can be modified to your needs. Some items have good spice levels. You pay at the cashier first. Then food comes out within 10 mins, fresh and made to order, and is brought to your table after you. Everyone here is working hard to serve every hungry person. It feels normal.Dont let anyone else tell you otherwise. A lot of Portland influencers(who are anything but) will try to steer you away from such places. Why? Because such down to earth and for-the-common-normal-folk places dont have incentives for people trying to post photos in return for free food or $25, the customer base here wont pay $20 for overpriced lunch, and such small places dont have the network to send each other business. You dont have to be a cook to tell if the food is good or bad, but you have to be desperate to make a living and get free insta invites in exchange for free pics on Instagram. This place gets a lot of people, and theres a reason why: food is simple, tasty, cheap, the place is relaxing, and its non-pretentious. Everyone here is usually coming from work or taking a break from home. Almost no one (except me, which Im working on) had a camera out to take the attached photos.I recommend the Chili Relleno burrito (its a very large portion) and cheese quesadilla. Overall, one of the better (if not one of the best) Mexican food joints in town.
Best taco shop around. Be careful of the salsa... Sometimes its very mild and other times its VERY hot.
I purchased a tres leches cake and it was spoiled. it was so sour.
Legitimate, fresh, and made with love. Atmosphere adds a lot to the experience as well - this place is tucked away inside a small Mexican market/bakery with piñatas covering every square inch of the ceiling. Thats cool and all, but the food speaks for itself. Nothing fancy, nothing new, just traditional Mexican food done brilliantly. Check this place out if you havent already for an authentic experience of tremendous Mexican cuisine.
Awesome authentic experience, torta can not be beat.
Great tacos! Best chicken tacos in town. Their burritos our very mediocre.
Delicious food!! Nice market
They say the best food comes from hole in the wall places. Well this is it. Best carne asada tacos anywhere. Be sure to squeeze some lime on them!
Zero pretension. Just a great burrito the size of your head for a fair price.
I love this place! The people are so kind and the food in the restaurant is always good and fresh! The store part has so many selections!! I go crazy in there!
It can be hard to get a hold of them for phone ordering, but their food is delicious and inexpensive.
Just go there. Nice surprise, super burrito is. Fun place to shop. Meat counter look nice. Staff is friendly.
Fantastic tacos. This Californian feels home. My husband was born and raised here in PNW and doesnt agree with me that these are the best tacos in Portland metro but if youre craving a truck taco with seating, check it out. Plus, the attached tienda has everything a grocery truck in So. Cal. has and more. By proof of the empty plates, we enjoyed ourselves. Plus, few places you can walk out, spending under $5 and stuffed. I recommend the carnitas tacos.
Great authentic Mexican food to go! You might not be impressed with the decorum, but the food is excellent!
Had three burritos in one weekend. Enough said.
Best carne asada in town. They used to wrap their burritos a lot tighter. But my gosh, slobbering all over this stuff is top!
If you thinking of going to the Santa Cruz Market . DO NOT GO!!! They discriminate against people with disabilities. I came in to buy some sweet bread with my REGISTERED Service Dog and as soon I get to cashier the lady behind the counter told me I could not have my Service Dog in the store even AFTER I should her the Registered Service Dog I.D .I really don’t understand people now these days!
Best street tacos in Portland! I love shopping in the grocery store while waiting for my food to be prepared. Wonderful pastries!
I tend to always get the same plate. Tacos Dorados. Essentially a taquito plate with lots of iceberg lettuce, cotija cheese, tomatoes and fried goodness. Always fresh. Always good. I just wish they served beer. Very simple. Many sides available in terms of salsa, and spicy pickled vegie’s. Good service, as well.
Great lil tienda with the best tacos in town in the back.
Best Mexican I ever had in the us for 20 years!! Love their meat shop as well♡
They had good chips but no nachos. The tacos are good if you get the right meat (and they have several to choose from. The salsa is not that good.
Way over priced pastries. I have never paid so much for a conchs. Flies every where.
One of the best burritos Ive ever had. Also a great deal for a burrito the size of my arm!
Food is always great. My favorite is the carne asada plate or the burrito
Little Market with Latin specialty items in front. Authentic hole-in-the-wall taqueria in the back. Delicious food with large portions at cheap prices. If you’re adventurous, try the tripa, lengua, or cabeza. Excellent on a tostada or huarache.
Another amazing taco experience. Tienda has some of the best in town. Totally worth the drive to St. Johns!
Tacos are very good, cute store in front
Great local Mexican food. Very authentic and delicious!
Always thorough about their orders and I Love Their Bacon Breakfast Burritos👍👍
Best tacos in Portland.. no lie
Love everything! Great hot food and staples. Also a big fan of their pan dulce and flan!
Reminded me of my 2nd wife down in guadalajara. 👍
Without a doubt one of the best places to eat of all time EVER. Tacos WILL make you cry tears of joy and set this whole new high standard of tacos for you. 100% garenteed. My girlfriend and I moved to a different city and we travel all the way over here just to sustain our addiction to this food. The guacomole will shoot your soul out of your body to heaven and make you question your reality and your life values. Their ingredients are always fresh some how, I dont even get it. It makes no sense! Just try it!! Stop looking for good restaurants around to eat at and just go here!! I mean it!! Try the carne asada plate, or some tacos. They are fire!!!! Have fun! 🔥
Did not like how the owner tried to pump the price up of the sweet bread.
The market and carniceria are excellent on their own, but add in the amazing restaurant in the back, the homemade tamales available on weekends, and some of the friendliest staff in town, and you have all the reasons why this spot is always at the top of recommendations for best mexican food in Portland/Oregon
One of my fav places for quality mexican food. Food was super flavorful. Definitely worth going back to. Makes me feel like I in Nashville again.
This place is amazing. Taqueria is outstanding, they have elotes, great bakery, unique grocery items.
The burrito is enormous will cooked I enjoyed it if the whole thing with a surprising and on the way out the door I recommend grabbing a slice of tres leche from the grocery store
Great and authentic Mexican store with taqueria on the back! If you are looking for Mexican products or a huge burrito, that’s the place to go
Absolutely hands down the best burrito in Portland. This place is 100%legit.
We love Santa Cruz!! I’m just a gringa, but it’s our favorite in town.
Great tacos. They have fresh meatVeggiesCanned goodsFruitsIts a one stop shop for all your Mexican cravings
Best quesadillas I have ever had an their tacos are soooo good!! Loved getting birthday piñatas from the store part of the restaurant!
Best tacos in North Portland. Quick service, good prices.
We had the pollo tacos, pollo tamales, and marinated pork tacos, with a jamaica drink. And donuts, sugar and chocolate. The tacos were fat and everything tasted delicious. The tamales were generous. Donuts were tender, soft, fresh. The field next door is set up for alfresco dining. I forgot to take pics b4 I ate so here are some St.J pic.
If you looking for Mexican food or drinks this place has it.Even sweet bread and tres leches cake plus a restaurant in the back.
Good genuine Mexican food...cook always gets 5 stars been years now that Ive enjoyed this food cook has not failed!
