I would like to thank Jim McCool for his considerable help with a birthday gift that made my very elderly father very happy. Decades ago, my father and I had both seen, separately, an image of the Steve Devenyns painting “Rescued.” It’s a cowboy version of the parable of the Good Shepherd. A cowboy rides on horseback through a cold, snowy night with a little lost calf draped across his lap. Neither my father nor I ever could figure out who painted it. I searched all the Western artists I knew of.Fast forward to a recent vacation, when I was wandering through an antique shop and what did I see but … a beautifully framed print of that very painting.Did I buy it? No. Instead I thought, “Great! I’ll just order him a print.”Fortunately I had the presence of mind to snap a photo with my phone. Back home, I set about ordering a print. Ha! There were only 750 prints of this image ever made, and when, rarely, one becomes available, it is generally auctioned. I had seen a real treasure. The antique shop never answered my inquiry, but the photo showed a McCools business card tucked into the frame. So I contacted McCools directly via Facebook Messenger. Mr. McCool answered almost immediately, even though it was a Saturday afternoon. By the time I called to arrange shipment Monday, he had the framed print all packed up, awaiting only my father’s address. The story doesn’t stop there. FedEx even delivered a day earlier than scheduled, but the box took a beating along the way. My father said he was fearful when he saw it.Inside, however, was the framed print with absolutely no damage. Mr. McCool’s careful packing saved the day.And that’s not all. I am an artist, so I know exactly what a pain it is to ship artwork, particularly artwork framed under glass. It’s time-consuming in the extreme and requires expensive materials. Even so, there are no guarantees that the art will arrive unscathed.Mr. McCool was incredibly considerate and kind in shipping my father’s birthday gift and charging me only the actual FedEx cost.I cannot thank him enough for going above and beyond. If I’m ever near Richmond again, sir, I hope you’ll let us take you to lunch.

Finest frame shop in Richmond. Jim McCool really knows framing, color and design. Great for Art Restoration of old, damaged oil paintings.
