Best shop in Richmond in my opinion! I have been there multiple times and not only is it well taken care of and clean but the staff are amazing. Every time I have been I feel welcomed by the owner and other staff. I had a great experience! I was warmly greeted when I walked in by all staff for my piercing appointment with Ashley. She took my ID and we did paperwork. Her work space was pristine clean and so cute! She walked me through everything and followed all proper hygiene procedures. Her communication was excellent and she checked on me throughout the entire process. She uses high quality jewelry and has aftercare products available on site. I can’t recommend her enough!

Ashley is INCREDIBLE!! They walked me through every step of the process (I hadn’t even mentioned the trauma I had from another piercing experience!! this was just their demeanor and making sure I felt safe and understood what was happening). I got one piercing and immediately scheduled for another. Great quality jewelry, amazing quality piercer, and priceless piercing. Can’t wait to go back

I actually did like Joe Fessmens work but I just find it odd about him telling me that I shouldnt judge his peers work or talking bad about them,then telling me we need to go our separate ways but we are cool? Scratch my head over that still. Okay, whatever floats your boat. Probably slept on the wrong side of the bed. Idk. Weird

The tattoo I got from Joe is much better than the original design/concept I brought in. Everyone working in the shop is super happy and the environment was relaxed but clean and professional. I got to meet some repeat customers and there were many new clients there also. I love the work I got done. The price was well worth it and I got my moneys worth! I will be back for bigger pieces in the future and would highly recommend Yellow Bird.

This place is great. The staff is all super helpful and friendly. Joe was recommended by a friend so I asked him to do a couple of pieces for me. He was very patient, professional, and honest when it came to his recommendations. I brought him TERRIBLE prints of what I wanted and he turned them into something absolutely awesome. I already have plans to go back and get more work done. Highly recommend this shop and Joe.

I knew I didn’t want to have the typical mall store piercing my daughter’s ears. After an email conversation with Ashley (who was really quick to respond to my inquiry), I knew I picked the right business. The whole place is clean, welcoming, and friendly. Also a bonus to see Juney (sorry if I misspelled her name) the beautiful pup. No the pup wasn’t in the piercing room. Ashley took the time to explain to my daughter what she was going to do. Yes my daughter cried but she was quick to smiles after she saw her newly pierced ears. The healing was quick and never needed saline nor did my daughter complain of any pain. Expect to pay more than your gun piercing shops, but it’s worth it. You get titanium earrings that are comfortable that don’t snag on anything, sterilized in house, and unique colors. I’m so glad I found this place. Thanks Ashley.

Ever since I was 17, I had always wanted a tattoo of a one eyed monster on my left cheek. I walked into this shop and Joe was more than willing. He had his apprentice Zachary sketch out a beautiful veiny one eyed monster and they both went to work on me. Will tell my friends to come here from now on.

Due to covid 19 every tattoo shop is booking and currently not accepting walk ins. But even with a scheduled appointment a week in advance I arrived and the man at the desk told me he didnt book me. He looked up my email and said I apologise I didnt even write your name down. Im sure they are great artists but the professionalism went out the window when I left disappointed.

I turned 18 a little less than a month ago, so this was my first professional tattoo. I came in looking for a cover up for a smudgy stick and poke I had done a few years back, and was worried at first that it would be tricky to cover. However, Joe made it disappear with no problems at all. I was blown away by how detailed and delicate the line work was, and Joe was the absolute best both through his artwork and his personality. He was able to make the experience fun and comfortable while still maintaining a very professional attitude. I am beyond thrilled with the results and will definitely be coming back. Will did such an amazing job and helped me so much!Im from out of state and wanted a piece done for my trip. Will worked with me over the phone and through email to get the design set up even though I wasnt in the city. He was so accommodating and easy to work with. My daughter has been pleading for years to get a tattoo... 😔😔. My answer has always been “no...why markup your temple” and left it there. Under the age of 18 parents permission is required. So she waited patiently for the ripe “old age of 18” ☺️ and with her own funds asked if I would accompany her and I obliged. It was a Friday evening of Labor Day weekend returning home from college for the long holiday weekend, she went to one of the most frequented and popular shops (as my daughter has been told) on Broad Street midtown. She walked in at 8pm, they closed at 9pm, she asked for a half sleeve and was turned away because of the time it would have taken. She was told to come back the next day at 12noon. When my daughter has her nerve set and ready to proceed, she wants it done then. So She turned to me and said “this shop will never see my face again”...so we googled any nearby tattoo shops with 5 star ratings and a few popped up. Immediately the name “old soul” caught my attention as well as the ratings in a most positive way. My daughter called prior to my driving downtown, the owner answered her questions and agreed to take her, it was almost 9 at this time. We drove and arrived around 9pm. This was my first time ever in a tattoo shop and it was so clean and full of personality, I didn’t know what to expect actually 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ But very clean! We were welcomed when we arrived and treated with excellent customer service. My daughter wanted a half sleeve of roses 🌹 which would take hours to do, taking over the allotted closing time. To please the customer and considering his staff, Joe offered to do my daughters tattoo knowing how long the job would take and not asking any of the employees to stay longer than needed for the job. The job took 4 hours for completion, the tattoo was not a picture from any of the book designs or displays but one she found on her own and without hesitation Joe made it happen. He grabbed his coffee and went right to work, never complaining or flinching... he was very personable as was the staff. He did EXCELLENT WORK in my opinion and everyone else who saw the finished product. We were in the shop until around 2am and he still took the time to give her instructions to take care of the tattoo and the needed ointments and etc. the only drawback, if there were any, is that you’re not allowed to video record while he’s working...he politely asked if I would not. Again...I obliged. This is a very nice clean personable establishment...sooo very happy 😊 my daughter was turned away from the “popular tattoo parlor in midtown “ ☺️☺️

I was able to meet the guys running the place and was very impressed. My friend is very happy with his tattoo! The depth, darkness, color & the uniqueness of the artwork. However, once it was covered with Vaseline and a patch I have not had a chance to get a picture yet.

Loved this tattoo shop!! Joe the owner provided such a personable, unique customer experience. He was patient, informative, and gave me some expert feedback on my tattoo choice. He directed my vision and put his stamp of creativity on it and my tattoo came out beautiful. I LOVED IT! I appreciated his skills & professionalism. My girlfriends and I all received tattoos that we love. We enjoyed the open, relaxing chill environment. I felt at home. I was so glad Joe stayed open late for us and made us feel so comfortable, plus blessed us with some pretty dope tats. Please do yourself a favor and visit the Olds Soul Tattoo shop if your looking for a new, touch up or cover-up tat in Virgina. Best part of my experience outside of receiving a great tattoo was Joe stayed open extra late for us and his music playlist was excellent. :)

First and foremost, I hate leaving reviews and I absolutely do not believe in rating any service 5 stars but on this occasion I felt it warranted. However, with that being said, their work alone speaks volumes which is what had brought me in to begin with despite the hand full of poor reviews reflecting past clients feelings being hurt due to professionals providing professional input/professionals stating reasonably that they would not do XYZ for professional reasons. I myself experienced a degree of what had been mentioned, what my initial thoughts were on how to lay out the tattoo had been simply less that logical even as someone with several other tattoos, Joe made it clear and provided professional input and proceeded to sketch it up how I originally planned to show what he was talking about, not only did he do that but he also was forward thinking as to future tattoos placement/sizing/ect. For Joe to do that directly from the start for some it may crush the ego of the causal indulger, hence the handful of poor reviews, seeing how most tattooists stroke the clients self perception of their artistic inclinations; however that along with the work that speaks for itself is what sets aside a professional from a simple tattooist regardless of how good they may be. If you want some truly profound art etched into your body for the rest of your life that you will be absolutely euphoric about then this shop is where you should find yourself if you’re looking to indulge. Personally, for the remainder of the time that I find myself still in this state I fully intend on loyally returning for each next piece of art.

This was my very first time visiting this tattoo shop and everything just did not go planned accordingly. I scheduled my appointment with Joe a week in advance and no tattoo was sketched or prepared as I was TOLD it would be. I even sent a photo of my original tattoo and then on the day of the appointment he suddenly is not able to produce a similar image. He sketched the tattoo while I am there which wasnt what I originally wanted and rushed... He got upset because I didnt like it upon placing the sketch on my body. I understand we all take pride in our work but I am the customer who is paying you. I get what I want. I asked if I could have more stems... He says Sure. I asked if I can have a bigger rose I am not done yet. Very unprofessional and defensive. I then stated I wanted the tattoo closer towards the back of my rib cage area and it did not do that. He then states This is how far back I can do it which was yelled way from the other side of the shop. Lol. No, that is not true. He could have but just decided not to do it to my liking. He asked me if I left a deposit and I say yes I did, $40. Then he says it wouldnt be refunded which in reality it should have been! If I really wanted to, I could take matters further but I will leave this review here as well as the BBB. The deposit was supposed to be an extra $85 when originally he said it was supposed to be $100. Know your prices and probably would recommend a course on how to run a business. I hope the $40 can be applied towards it. What a total waste of time with someone who so called has all of this knowledge and experience. Sure, absolutely. We all aim to be great at our professions.

Dont waste your time here.If you want a shop that wont respect your time, will give you attitude once they have you in and then not stand behind their work, this is the shop for you. Learn from my mistake, move on. If you want quality original work and an actual art experience, go somewhere else. My review is specific to Joe Fessman the owner, who sets the tone for the shop and did my work. Piece turned out OK. A few issues that I wanted fixed but he did not stand behind it and just acted like a complete prick during a followup session he requested I schedule. Would not even stand there and hear me, just ran away and hid upstairs leaving his employees wide eyed. One big issue I have is he charges for custom work. I liked what he ultimately put together but NOTHING was original. Drawing turned out to be pieced together exact parts of other drawings I have found online (custom??). Just sayin, be honest about your work. The good reviews here swayed me, but are just friends who want to see him succeed so must have some redeeming qualities. If you are a paying customer and want my full experience to avoid issues? Read on.For starters, I stop in to share a concept on a large piece (4-5 hours). He stated he would draw something up with a $100 deposit and if we schedule a session. Had a bit of attitude (first bad sign) about me asking what if I come back and I dont like the design? Said has never happened but would refund me. I make my appt. and drive 45 min to it. He is there but states he has no drawing because he lost my appointment. But, your system sent me reminders! Said he would draw something up for me and e-mail it later because of the mix-up so I think, good compromise. He sends me a drawing in 3 days that is nothing like I asked, looks rushed and very amateur. I explained it did not meet my expectations and he said maybe he isnt the right person for it since he is very busy. Should have stopped there but a few days later he sends me a drawing that I liked so we schedule a 4 hour session. After 2 more reschedules, I get my 4 hour slot, show up for session and he is totally unprepared. No gun ready, no stencil ready, no ink ready, moaning the whole time, looking for his gear and borrowing stuff from another artist. We start 35 minutes late. We do 4 hours of work and an hour in, he starts complaining about colors, how hard it is to run a business, bragging about how much he makes on the other chairs, badmouthing other shops... Not the best 4 hour experience but telling myself Im paying for the art and not the personality at this point. He finishes up and suggests I set up a 1 hr consult 3 weeks later to touch up anything after it heals. I book a 30 min consult and send him a note reminding him that I blocked an hour per his request for a little touch up and anything he sees. I show up, he greets me, lets take a look and then gets annoyed that I want a white eye made blue as intended and a little green in another area that looked funny. Tells me he doesnt do touch-ups now on Fridays and would need to schedule another session. Really? You asked me to come in! Probably 10 min of work. I get pissed at his wasting my time again and he tells me he aint doing it. You are damn right you arent doing it or anything else for that matter. Nothing else on his calendar, so clearly cant be bothered. I am pissed for him not standing behind his work and being a prick about it. His shop seems used to this, definitely not the first time. I dont wish anyone bad things but take your money elsewhere. His work was adequate but the experience sucks and professionalism not there. I will have it touched up somewhere else, not a big deal. Also, as a side notes, he wrapped it in plastic with no pad, vapes while doing work and does not seem to take the greatest care at cleanliness (if you care). No infection, but an observation vs other shops and how they do things better. Again, move on, take your money elsewhere.

Been getting tattooed all over NJ for over ten years and I can tell you that Old Soul is doing it right! Shop was put together with the sweat, blood, and talent of Joey Fessman who was brought up from the awesome artsists in nj including the late Richie Pan (Dark Star Tattoo). Dude loves what he does, and doesnt take any bullshit from anyone trying to take the easy route into tattooing, and unfortunately some peoples feelings get hurt as you can see below. Kitchen magicians are just handled differently where Fessman is from I suppose. Let his work speak for it self. You wont be disappointed! OST all the way.
