This is easily the best place to buy Asian ingredients on this side of town. I always find something new that I want to experiment with when Im there. It can feel a little dark and disorganized and maybe even a little bit sketchy at times but I think if youre going to a bright organized Asian market you may be missing the vibe.

Wonderful market.My boyfriend and I had a blast wandering through here and bought way too much stuff. Ended up with great food!Excited to come back again.

I absolutely love this place and the people who work there. Like some people say, it can be a bit of an organized mess, but in a great way! They have some of the best food and this is the only place in Roanoke where Ive found my favorite candy since 2nd grade- white rabbit vanilla rice candy. Check this place out if you havent!

They sell red bean and green tea ice cream!!! Lots of great stuff! Very friendly and helpful!

My favorite place to get my Asian goods. I love the lady who works there. She’s so nice to my daughter every time we go in. Leaving Hawaii and coming here to find this little market makes me feel at home and happy. Not too mention the choices of instant ramen is also my favorite! Highly recommend this store.

Great location on Brambleton Ave in Roanoke. Great selection of various items at reasonable prices. Staff was friendly and helpful so if youre looking for a certain item theyre willing to help out. Fresh seafood and produce.

Super SUPER friendly service from the staff at J &L Food Mart on Brambleton Ave in Roanoke. They talk about a lot of random things. Vegetables here are a little high priced, but usually the ingredients and other things are better here than at the Taipei Supermarket on Peters Creek.

The vegetables are cheaper than Kroger, great selection, friendly staff

J&L is the best oriental store in Roanoke. Great selection and extremely fresh goods! I agree with other reviews.. the owners Mr&Mrs Ren, are very random and talkative. One time, they told me their daughter....apparently her name is Cathy Ren... Never speaks with strangers and she apparently Is very shy... I didnt even ask about their daughter or what her name is... Haha... Yet they told me her name and stuff anyway.. HahaI also witnessed the owners talking to other strangers about their daughter and how she apparently is a student at Harvard.They are seriously a very weird family. They will engage in conversation with total strangers and mention very personal information about their daughter, and other things. This is a good little market though. I will continue coming here for my oriental goods. They beat Taipei supermarket and other places in Roanoke by 100x!

Very convient for me to get kimchee for my Korean mother. The lady owner is always sweet to us.

I come here sometimes to get oriental goods. I have found this J L place to be the best oriental place in Roanoke. The owner Ren, at first I thought was Wong. I later found out Ren is the man and Wong is the woman that work here. Ren is the owner. He is the guy mentioned by someone else. I will admit Ren is pretty awkward. He is a weird dude but hes fun to talk to occasionally. I have heard sometimes people come by here just to talk with him about china. I remember the last time I came by here, Ren randomly told me his daughter was going to Harvard University. I didnt even ask but I like conversation so I replied oh really? He went on and on about how proud he was of his daughter instead of trying to help me find items like he should have. If your daughter really is a Harvard University student, fine. Thats great. But you dont have to go on and on about it. I wasnt even listening to half of what he said. His wife Wong is awkward too, she was telling me her daughter is very amazing. Wong went on to say to me My daughter is also the type to pick good friends. She will be very shy when she first meets you. Haha.... OK.... I dont really care if your daughter is shy at first when meeting new people. I can see though these people try really hard to be friendly and good to people. You can tell. I like them overall. I like their store too. I will continue coming here to get my oriental items.

Owners are really sweet

This place is right beside Papa Johns and is convienantly placed, so I thought I would go by and get some ingredients for a traditional chinese dinner. (now and then I like to try and fix traditional chinese dishes) I immediately liked the place quite good, it has a good selection of all kinds of products, I spoke with the owner, lee wong, about chinese culture. (hes kind of a tall chinese man and had a mustache..... i don;t know his wifes name but she is a little shorter and kind-of heavy set looking)... I liked talking chinese culture with this guy so I returned one day on my day off to talk to him more...after he said to come back and chat more when I have time.-- this is not nessesarily a review about the products, the selection is good, some prices are high... I actually liked the store... but any like I had for the store went away after what happened....So i went back to the store on my day off to chat with him. I work at Advance Auto Parts and have for some time... and I was absolutely shocked to hear him ask me So why did you lie about where you work? I said... what He said he had called Advance on Brambleton (why??!) to verify I worked there! He said he was very suspicious of individuals who in come and chat, they must have nothing to do, and they possibly could be in trouble with the law He then said that the store said they never heard of me. I work at the Advance on Jamison Ave towards Vinton and I told him thats the one. Not the one on Brambleton. I only live around the Brambleton Ave area. He said call them and show me you work there... so I did... I shouldnt have but I did. I put them on speaker phone but he still wasnt convinced. It was a very strange situation. That owner is one WIERD guy! Ill never go back there because of him.

The store smelled horrible, it was dark,we needn’t there to get the brand of rice we usually buy,this brand is usually 36 dollars in our old Asian store(moved from Richmond) but he charged us 46 for it even though there was a sign on the top of the door that has our brand of rice is 40 dollars,I just wanted to get out of that stores because of horrible the smell was, NEVER COMING BACK!!we will find another store for our needs.
