The McNay was a wonderful place to spend a portion of my birthday. We were pleasantly surprised that McNay partnered with Blue Star Families and hosted our visit for free.We did pay a small fee to see the special exhibit and enjoyed the Limitless exhibit and are glad we did. The special exhibit highlighted 5 influential female artists and their individual and downright quirky take filled me with inspiration! The story of the the home and museum are a true testament to endearing love and art. Walking the spectacular grounds is a must!

One of my favorite museums in Texas. Lots of art from artists of Spanish descent. Just wish there was more art made by women in galleries. Other than that - really enjoyed the visit. Library is wondeful - wish I could have used the ladder to reach more books but it was labeled for staff use only. Visited from out of town and definitely should have come earlier. Well be back! Highly recommend visiting this museum if youre ever in SA.

Interestingly eclectic collection of modern art. From Picasso to Marsden Hartley. The decorative glass display is lovely, too, as is the original 1920s residence.Odd groupings of permanent works, IMO, would like to know the thinking behind that, but the mystery doesnt bother me.Friendly staff, beautiful grounds with hefty pieces of sculpture on display invite you to walk around. Inside new wing were engaging contemporary installations.I enjoyed the intro video and would like to know more about Ms. McNay and to thank her for her legacy of collecting.

Very nice museum with amazing grounds. The collection is a very nice cross cut of pivotal artists. The current contemporary women show is excellent. The only nit to pick is several of the galleries have a distinct old people smell. To the point my kids and myself hustled through the gallaries. Note there are commercial odor masking products.

I am not sure how to describe this place, its wonderful maybe? Id never been and had no idea what to expect, but the vast range of art, so much of it local to the area and state, along with an amazing array of international art, historic pieces, new pieces, visual, sound... and thats not even mentioning the building itself which is maybe the most interesting part of it all.If you have any interest in what humans can create and how easily you can find beauty in anything from carved wood to paintings to photos to tile designs around a house... this place is worth every cent of the entrance fee.

Really nice art museum. The property and architecture are really beautiful. Ive seen several photoshoots taking place on the grounds during multiple visits. They always have great rotating exhibits. The property has been under construction for some time, and Im excited to see the place once construction is completed. They have various sponsored free admission days/times throughout the month. Detailed info can be found on their website.Side note: havent been since before COVID, so I cant attest to how things have changed in the past year.March 2021: looks like they’ve finished with the renovations. The Limitless exhibit is really neat. Wasn’t too busy when I went, but Yayoi Kusama’s timed exhibits tend to be quite popular. You can book a reservation online or get in line at the museum. Also its too bad the fence built around the museum is so short, looks like they were trying to save money. We have been here on four different occasions, including with a school group on a tour, and love the McNay museum.Kids 12 and under are free. The permanent collection has a great variety and contains many of the great well known artists. They also highlight local and lesser known artists. It would take quite a long time to see everything in one visit, so it makes sense to return. If an annual membership fits for you, it would be a greta investment to be able to g back and immerse yourself in one area each visit. The grounds are lovely, so dont miss enjoying the residence, courtyard, and the extensive surrounding area. Additionally, if the weather permits (rain and heat can impede) the water features, koi/turtle pond, and paths take you to sculptures on the property to further enjoy. You can access the grounds at no charge, too.We have seen some outstanding traveling temporary exhibits, also. Some require reservations, so check before going.I mentioned having visited once with a school group. The docents were ready to share their extensive knowledge. We were with a homeschool co-op group, and had kids ranging from toddlers to teens. It was more geared toward 6+, which is the age I would recommend to fully appreciate that type of interaction. Taking youngers for just a visit is wonderful, just wouldnt recommend a tour. Though learning proper museum etiquette inside, they would benefit from the outdoor exhibits and being able to move around and explore, too.

We enjoyed the grounds, the exhibits, and the special event. Unfortunately, our entire trip was rendered unenjoyable by the overbearing security. I first noticed we were being followed abnormally when we examined the sculptures downstairs from the main entrance. Each room we went to, the attendant moved and re-positioned herself to watch our children. When we went to the next room, she followed us, being very un-subtle about it, staring at us until we looked at her, and then turning away quickly. This was completely opposite to the attendant we experienced upstairs, who engaged our kids on a piece of art and showed them how the sculpture cast a hidden shadow on the wall. We went upstairs and into the main building, and experienced the same un-subtle following each time we moved. Keep in mind our children were walking WITH us, talking about the exhibits WITH us, and staying in the same room as we were. They are all over 10, the oldest nearly 15, so they were not running, jumping, climbing, or being inappropriate in any way. The final straw for me was when an attendant informed me my child must stay next to me, that anyone under 18 was not allowed to wander - he was in the same exhibit room as all of us, just across the room looking at a different piece of art. I told her I did not appreciate being followed room to room, that it was distracting and overbearing. I told her to pass that along to her team, and to leave us alone for the remainder of our stay. About 5 minutes later, a supervisor and 4 more attendants arrived to discuss the issue, standing around me and my family as the supervisor engaged me. As my kids sat there, quietly waiting, I had a candid discussion with him about his team and their behavior. I explained that we take our children to many museums, and have NEVER had this kind of experience before. He offered me free passes, which I declined. He said he would do more training with his team, citing some kind of problem they had in the past with people touching exhibits, and to have a good rest of our afternoon. We went to the next room...and were followed around by the attendant. Overall, it frustrated both myself and my spouse to have this experience with the staff, and made our kids wonder what they did wrong. We decided to leave rather than continue being followed around. We felt very, very unwelcome. We will not be returning to the McNay.

We came here after an underwhelming experience at the SAMA.The history of the mansion alone is fascinating, but they had some super cool works of art here. They had something here for everyone, Renaissance-era stuff, modern art, sculptures, string art, you name it. The artists here ranged from Picasso to local high school kids. I loved it.We did not even know about the Yayoi Kamusa exhibit, or who she was, until we arrived. The lady at the front desk mentioned it we shrugged and agreed. In hindsight, that was a great decision. The immersive exhibit was only 45 seconds, but it was worth it.The Spanish/Villa-style mansion is gorgeous and makes for a great place to explore. The grounds are well-manicured and the courtyards were littered with scultures and ponds.BONUS: Free Parking!Only complaint? I wish the mask policy was enforced a bit more strictly. The majority of people were polite and respectful, but there were a handful of people unmasked and coughing throughout exhbits.Overall, the McNay museum was a phenomenal experience and was definitely the highlight of our San Antonio trip. We will be returning. Highly recommended.

Had such a pleasant Sunday strolling through this museum. It was a free Sunday, paid $10 bucks to see the Andy Warhol: Portraits exhibition. Original fees are 20 bucks for adults, 19 and under are free! The idea of strolling though this beautiful historic mansion AND enjoying master art is a must for those that need a break from life...or a little inspiration. I sat outside in the patio for a while, then by the fountain in a little wooden pergola and left as a 5pm wedding was about to begin. (They close at 5 on Sundays.) Parking was pretty easy(and free) although I can see how it can maybe get packed...and it was a bit difficult to find..(well, not really, its on New Braunfels St., but there really isnt a sign on that street telling you where the entrance is. I missed it and had to go back around. I found it that second time.). There is a cafe inside....but I didnt check it out. There are plenty of eateries around though... Cant wait to go back.

Came here for my girlfriends birthday, we both enjoyed the visit. I truly have no appreciation for the more recent works of “art” they had exhibited there, but the museum/location itself is a beautiful place. The courtyard is very well kept, with lots of details to observe. The exterior grounds are also a nice place to stroll around, and take it all in. They asked us if we were students (we both are) and gave us the discount without showing ID’s, and that brought the total down to $30 for our admission; so that was nice. The staff does kinda hover around, I assume to make sure you don’t touch anything. They just do it in such an uncomfortable way, like passive aggressive night club bouncers- just some smiles would’ve made all the difference. An older lady with dyed red hair on the second floor, said hello as we walked by, then proceeded to give a short history of the sculpture my sweetheart was admiring; that was great.
