This place is great!! We went back two days in row because it I cool. If you have kids they have donkeys, chickens, a cat, a cow,,rabbits and turtles and a tortoise too...the plant selection was amazing, not your home Depot or Lowes boring...they have full line Bonuses supplies, plants and soils, an extensive selection of aquatic/ pond plants and hardware, and so much more...tell Sam Cameron from Phoenix sent you
An incredible experience! Which is funny to say about a nursery. But it’s a special nursery. It’s easy to spend hours here, as there’s always another walkway or corner you didn’t expect to be there. Actual live animals to enjoy, beautiful layout, and more plant varieties than you can imagine. Every fruit tree imaginable, an herb garden, even a shade garden with an Asian zen vibe. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable. And once Nate’s is open again after the pandemic shutdown, it’ll only get better.
I think that everyone should have the pleasure of visiting City Farmers at least once! Its like a hidden oasis in the center of San Diego, full of treasures. Go there, bring your family and friends, spend some time and enjoy yourself. And you can even get a bite to eat next door! Enjoy!
Lovely little place. We visited today; while we didnt make a purchase today, we will be back in the future. You can tell that all the plants and animals are taken care of with love. The staff member I interacted with was patient and nice too.Would recommend to anybody, even for a visit!
Fun place to visit, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Will be better when wheelchair access is improved.
Great inner city nursery. A wonderful selection of plants, trees, fertilizers, chicken feed, chicken.s, topsoil, compost and misc. gardening materials. A very whimsical atmosphere with ponds, live animals and displays. Perfect adults, children, and adults who are feeling a bit childish. Very reasonable pricing, trees are in excellent condition.
Great layout on a couple acres of wild in the middle of the urban sprawl. The plants are laid out all over the nursery in a way that feels more like a nature walk than a store. The staff is always great and knowledgeable. And we always grab lunch at Nates next door, a great way to spend an afternoon. My favorite nursery in San Diego.
This place is wonderful! I discovered this place today. It is calming and nice with lots of selection. Everything from Spanish moss, fig trees, to cactus. Some barn animals live there and they also have some beautiful water features. An employee was very helpful and directed me further back on the property past the house to the cactus and succulent area where I was pleasantly surprised with some gorgeous cacti and succulents! I was mostly looking downward at the displays and Im glad I also looked up because I found some golden rat tail cactus hanging above and its a plant I have wanted for some time. They have wagons you can use to place your items on and its a lush and relaxing place. I got some golden rat tail cacti and some succulents including a giant echeveria; I am so happy with my purchase and the employees were kind and helpful. The prices are good. I look forward to coming here again.
I miss seeing Bill. This place is amazing. Its also the only place with local bee supplies.
This is the best nursery in San Diego! Great selection, knowledgeable staff, and a commitment to the community. Parking can be tight, but spots open up quickly. Make sure you stop at the restaurant too and make a whole afternoon of it! Also, their Southern California natives section are SURE TO GROW well in your garden.
Great place, only down fall is that it’s there only open 4days out the week.
I was not able to enjoy the shop as much as I could have due to the parking. My wife had to drop me off and park a block and a half away. She didnt join me so I had to hurry up. My hobbies are bonsai and bees. I could have spent a lot more money then I did.
Nice honest folks and amazing customer service!
One of the best nurseries in San Diego.Great knowledge staff too
Hello.I look at your activities in Kurdistan region in IraqI am an agricultural engineer and I like agriculture very much. I hope one day I can visit America and work in agriculture there. With respect
Few places left in San Diego that exposes our inherent drive to do right by our planet. If you can find another nursery that has sections for children to play with farm animals and learn about growing, let me know. Recently, CFN lost the man who put it all together. Thank you staff for keeping up his dream
Such a cool place. Baby goats, chickens, parrots, bunnies, mules...and beautiful plants too! Fun for kids of all ages!
Great selection of plants, trees, and greenery! Prices are reasonable and everything is well taken care of.
We bought a 1/2 yard today of topsoil at about 10 ish and the young man driving the bob cat front loader was very kind and gracious
This nursery is so awesome. Love the care they put into their plants. I try to order ladybugs for my roses every couple years, helps with the aphids. Many organic supplements for your garden. Im trying to make sure to keep all pesticides out and protect the butterflies and bees that visit my yard. Theres a great selection of roses, butterfly and hummingbird plants. Pretty much anything you want in your garden they have. The compost is amazing they sell. Nice area for the little ones to visit too!
Great place. Any gardener could get lost in all their items and treasures. Worth the visit, even if you are not a gardener!
Great selection of native plants and bonsai among other things. I love the more natural layout and the animals were a fun surprise!!
A local gem. Always love visiting all the animals, especially the mini donkeys and goats, while adding to my plant hoard at home.
Amazing place!! i came to buy plants but wowow theres so much more to this place! much to marvel at. love the animals! its like a mini zoo haha and the bonsai selection was just fine for me! also lots of different plants i didnt know of. wonderful place, will be back again and again :)
Love Plants and Gardening? This place is a fun spot to visit, great team ready to answer questions, great layout for you to look around. Very reasonable prices with plants that are cared for correctly so youll have success when bringing them home.
Nice people, great plants, cute animals.
Love the small town feeling when I get to the nursery and start perusing. Staff is always pausing to say “Hello” or ask if I need any help, even when they’ve got their hands full. We come here just to walk around “the farm” and my kids love picking out plants and planting them at home. I’ve taken classes here and eat next door at Nate’s. It’s just an all around good day when you get to say Hi to Farmer Bill and friends.
I love driving to City Farmers - even though it is 20 minutes away from my home and there are closer nurseries to me. It has a great vibe that is in tune with my natural-living ways. I love the Large CA Native plant selection, and all of the edible/medicinal options!
This is the best nursery in San Diego! Very knowledgeable and supportive. Not to mention the plants - when they have a veggie/herb/fruit etc in stock, you know its a good time to grow it. Everything Ive bought here (topsoil, veggies, fruit trees, seeds, herbs, native plants) has done very well. And if something is wrong, they will make it right. I will keep coming back. Thank you for being awesome!
They are NOT helpful. This place is not for the novice.Even when I called ahead the staff seemed disinterested.Interesting place. Just know what you want and where to find it because otherwise you are on your own.
I love this place. They have a huge selection, not just plants but also garden care and supplies. Their prices are also comparable, if not better than, national chains. To top it off their staff are kind and helpful.
I absolutely love this place. Excellent service in a beautiful environment.
I visited there on Saturday. They were closed a little disappointing. We purchased garden soil there in the bulk we bought a yard. I was really happy that it was right around the corner from my house. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They said they have a wide variety of house plants so I will be returning on Thursday when they open.
Always courteous and they really make the place as awesome as it could be for a small place. Their team is top notch.
Who else but the Tall Family would tell you not to buy plants right now because it’s too hot to plant them and they’ll die? This didn’t stop Sam from answering all of our questions and telling us what we needed and when to do it. And EVERY person we talked to was that helpful. This little piece of paradise in the middle of the city is so wonderful for so many reasons!
Love the eclectic vibe. Lots of interesting plants that will look great in my garden.Parking was a pain or I would give 5 stars
Went here to get all the stuff to start a garden. Wonderfully helpful staff. Very patient for a gardening noob like myself. Also love that the carry a wide range of native plant varieties.
Fun place! More like a backyard forest than other places.
Great place to buy native plants and many other interesting kinds of flora, plus a wide variety of fruit trees, in a non-corporate environment. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Adjacent Nates Grill serves excellent lunch and dinner, but is currently closed due to Covid19.
Very diverse. Theres always something for everyone there. Great staff, with personal touch. Thank you
The place to go in San Diego for your indoor and outdoor gardening needs. Helpful staff, huge stock of even hard to find things, and an all around joy to shop at. Highly recommend.
First visit. I loved it. Helpful and courteous. I would have loved to look around more but was hot. Will be back!
Another great trip. Lots of plant variety and choice. Prices are fair and plants are always top notch. The service was fantastic and employees are very knowledgeable and eager to help answer questions.
The people were helpful. Good lucking getting in tho. Theres about 3 different shop areas crammed into a parking lot fit for a crack house. Ill have to try and come back in a smart car and wait before opening so I can get into the parking lot.
A MUST see. Great variety of plants, vegetables, fruit trees! Bill Tall is a wealth of information!! Bring the kids to see the bull, the goats, turtles & more! Fabulous food at Nates! A real treasure!!!! One of my FAVORITE places!!!
Writing this as a first-time nursery visitor and beginner level gardener* we visited City Farmers Nursery after looking up where we could get Organic seeds and soil in San Diego. We arrived and the nursery is stocked to the brim, I cant imagine theres anything they dont offer! Tracy helped us in picking out the proper soil, fertilizer, and seeds for our new urban garden, which weve never used before. It was a Saturday afternoon and was very busy, but she made us feel like we were the only customers there by answering all of our questions and walking around the lot with us. She gave us step by step instructions and answered all of our very entry level questions. We cant wait to be back to learn more and get our next set of plants! Thanks, Tracy!!
Our family loves this nursery! They have everything we’ve ever needed as far as plants go: fruit trees, berry bushes, house plants, herbs, annuals, flowers, a huge collection of seeds. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, haven’t had a question they couldn’t answer. The property is really big and well designed. Our daughter loves the animals.
City Farmers Nursery is by far my favorite Nursery. The knowledge and customer service is unbeatable. We have learned so much from them.
Best place for BONSAI & best prices! Staff was helpful & knowledgeable teaching me how to shape & grow my first bonsai tree. Had all of the supplies I needed & has HUGE SELECTION OF BONSAI TREES to chose from. The bonsai I bought came with the pot & was $36. Other nurseries charge $60+ for same size bonsai.
We set some plans aside, and somebody took them before we had a chance to even check out. The place is a mess, and disaster. It must have been quite something 30 plus years ago.
This place is the best. So much knowledge
The Bonsai section is so peaceful and well stocked. Love this place.
Knowledgable, patient staff; a lovely environment; and a great selection. We picked out some plants with the help of the staff, met some goats and turtles, and also had a great pulled pork sandwich and beer cocktail for lunch! In addition to being my new favorite nursery, I honestly think this place would make a great place to take a date :) I dont see any reason to go anywhere else for gardening stuff ever again.
Great mom and pop nursery . One of the only places in town for bonsai supplies
Wonderful little family-owned style nursery. Amazing variety (to the point of eclectic) of plants and suburban livestock supplies. Even chickens. Bring your kids, and your dog (on a leash). Staff are helpful. Prices vary but probably worth it.
Loved this place for nearly 4 decades! Bill’s the best!
Absolutely love this place they have to meet with soil testing planning my garden getting the right Amendment mix for my garden and I of course enjoy Nates Garden Grill with their fabulous food be at breakfast lunch or dinner and live music
Always a great visit. Lots of selections for seeds, plants, chicken supplies. Friendly staff who are very knowledgeable.
One of my favorite nurseries in San Diego. So fun to walk around and look at their ever changing stock of interesting plants. They have a coffee stand and restaurant, too. Inside the building are a lot of gardening supplies and stuff. Theres a cool area where you can go up a slope and see the view.
This nursery was a real treat. Animals, plants, composting, vermaculture, bee keeping, they throw out a wide net at this establishment. I was pleased with the staff. They were very friendly and helpful (being a first-time customer, I wasnt sure of what to do). If there was a downside, it would be the parking. We were lucky to snag a spot, but am not really sure where we would have gone if the lot was full. All in all, it was a outstanding experience.
Love this place. Picked up some veggies for the garden and toured the gardens. They do almost everything by hand propagating plants and potting them. This is an awesome place to take kids since they have a really cool seed area and they have many farm animals on the property.
We just loved this place!!! Its a family run business and the customer service here| is fantastic. They have an amazingly wide range of plants to select from and have a beautiful collection of pots n accessories too. This was our first visit and the owners son Sam really helped not only select the plants but also arranged them beautifully as we were buying to give as gifts. We are surely going to refer this place to all our friends.
Great local owned business! All sorts of plants, apples, berries, flowers, succulents, bonsai, and some goats, turkeys, ducks, to say hello to!
What a cool, local shop! City Farmers has the feel of a very down to earth, quality place--Ive only been here once. The staff was super helpful on the phone, and even put the items I called for on hold without my asking. Very thoughtful.Plus, theyre the only store I found in San Diego that sells orange oil concentrate (98%), which is very hard to find (except online). This stuff is awesome, btw--cleans as good as paint thinner, but all natural and harmless to living things!Peace out, City Farmers. Thanks!
Okay, this place is really cool. It’s lovely to be there, and Nate’s has really good food right next door, but the parking is kind of crazy. It wouldn’t be so bad, but it is on a busy street on a hill with really no parking in the area. Other than that, it’s got a really pleasant atmosphere, and it’s just beautiful.
Our family loves the nursery and the family friendly atmosphere.
Love this nursery. They have a great selection of herbs. I also come here for their red worms for composting.
Top notch service in San Diegos old-fashioned, organic and innovative nursery in city heights! Great place to walk with kids, visit farm animals and get ideas for saving H20, native plantings and even a layered box garden. Always a new idea with a smile!
Bill Tall and his family, and extended family, have created a community destination that is very difficult to leave once youve ventured in to the paradise. Be warned...once going in there is a chance you may not come out for an hour or more. And some how you look up and find that you have driven yourself back to explore a new corner of the hundred acre woods. Come find out that there is frequently fun to had here in this adventure area.
I love doing business with the team at City Farmers Nursery. Bill is very knowledgeable about soil & the proper nutrients that are needed according to what plants we are putting in. We will continue to do business here because the team makes you feel like family. Right at home. Love this place!
Very knowledgeable staff, albeit some are friendlier than others and a wonderful place to learn about growing any kind of plant, a place to ask all the gardening questions you have not been able to find the answers to on your online searches and a wonderful place to spend an afternoon (or morning) with your children - There is no riding or petting, but there are fish, chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, goats and yes, there is a pony! They now have a great cafe, wonderful lemonade, so you can take a break if you need one. Just be aware that at closing time there is usually a really long line to check out and everyone in that line is trying to get advice from Farmer Bill!
A beautiful oasis in the middle of the city. A great place to get a coffee and relax. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. City Farmers also offers great classes from cheese-making to fermenting.
I attended a free seminar for school district staff to make gardens for public schools from Farmer Bill, the founder. The facility is educational & awesome & fun. The food at the Grill is farm to table & delicious.
There are a lot of nurseries closer to us than City Farmers but we drive there a couple of times a year for one reason or another because of the service, depth of knowledge, and quality of selection. We cant find anywhere else the things we find here.A couple of years ago when we wanted to get rid of our grass, we took a free class there that should us how to do it; and it worked just like we were taught!!!We keep coming back and have not been disappointed.
Really an awesome and and trustworthy purveyor of plants and gardening accessories. They always have what we need the first time, including incredibly healthy plants ready for replanting. As nice as can be, absolutely one of the go-to spots for gardening supplies and plants in San Diego.
The staff and owner are friendly and knowledgeable. They have supplies for raising chickens, bees, ducks, pickling foods, and a great book selection. They also will test and analyze your soil, special order plants and on and on. It is clear that the owner Bill loves what he does.
Awesome. Was taken here by my sister Lisa and feel in love with the place. Friendly environment. Great customer service. I just cant say enough. Thank You for having such a great store.
The folks from Walter Anderson referred me here to buy bulk soil for a tree planting and a garden box, and the staff at City Farmers were very knowledgeable and helpful. They didnt push me to buy stuff I didnt want, but they made sure I have the basics to successfully plant my avocado tree and have it thrive. Its putting out new leaves and looking healthy!!
Hidden gem. Loved this place. Cant wait to try the food. Great place to walk around and grab unique items for your home and garden.
I have only been for a few quick trips but each time has been a pleasant experience and the staff has been very friendly and helpful. We are just starting to spend more time planting and gardening so I have a feeling we will be making more trips to City Farmers.
Great local nursery. Nice variety of plants in every category. Farmer Bill is very knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions.
Great local business. Definitely the place to go for all your mason jar and gardening supplies. Lots of indigenous plants as well.
City Farmers is a great place to pick up some organic veggies, a fruit tree or two, a berry plant, and some California native plants, all while meandering through the paths among chickens, ducks, turkeys, goats, rabbits, and even a pony. Our little grandkiddos love this place! There is even a playground for the little ones, and a fish pond for them to watch the fish swim. We are planting natives and edibles in our yard, and City Farmers is our go-to resource. There is something refreshing about this non-franchised, local, family-owned and run business. Farmer Bill and his staff are knowledgable.
Thanks Farmer Bill for all your sage advice in dealing with my plants and the various bugs attacking them. I so appreciate an organic way to deal with them. Also, Im thrilled to have found a nursery that sells organic veggie plants. Yay YOU!
Awesome nursery. Very helpful staff. Fun place to take the kiddos.
