This place is quite wonderful to go to on a date. There is seven floors of art magic. They have a huge breathtaking display on the bottom floor honoring Diego Rivera. Theres also this monochromatic tube to walk through. Through that is absolutely beautiful both ways that you walk through. Unfortunately there are a lot of lines, but depending on the time of day they go pretty fast. There currently
It is a great place for a family weekend, place to to chat, to enjoy art. Please do park at the SFMOMA parking garage, you will get 10% off parking when you validate with your ticket.Love the architect of the building and the plants wall. There is a great indoor/outdoor dining cafe, get a piece of cake, a cup of coffee, then relax.
The building is beautiful and there are many unique displays. Works by Kahlo, Matisse, Rivera and Dali are part of the permanent collection. Robert Indiana’s Love sculpture is outside the cafe. A beautiful spot for it. An Indiana Love painting is also on the second floor near a Warhol self portrait. I wasn’t impressed with the staff though. The woman at the info booth was not very knowledgeable and there was an extremely rude guy manning some entrance. It should be a place you visit.
The Diego Rivera mural is in the free section of the museum. Love it. You have to experience it in person. The rest of the museum is full of interesting art on every floor. They have an Alexander Calder display that makes me feel happy. I love this museum. It would take more than one day to see it all.
I don’t know, I am really torn about this museum. Some of the displays were absolutely fantastic… but a lot of them were just… meh. Perhaps I was coming in with too high of expectations, but for a modern art museum in San Francisco, I just felt that too many of the exhibits were a little bit lacking in creativity and aesthetic appeal. The architecture of the museum is certainly interesting and lends itself well to displaying artwork, and perhaps it’s just the exhibits that were on display during our visit (July 2021), but all three of the people in our group were left feeling a little disappointed.
A huge collection of art and fascinating rotating exhibits housed in an architecturally stunning building. Visit the oculus bridge or the sculpture garden. See fascinating artists like Nam June Paik and Joan Mitchell on loan. Or admire local artists’ works. It’s in the middle of the financial district and a lot of other museums but always worth the trip.
Great architecture, vast collection of art. This is my favorite museum in San Francisco. No matter what your opinion is on modern art, you can agree that its interesting. This museum is one of the big museums in the city and houses many many galleries filled with unique pieces that make you think. If youre looking for inspiration, this is where youll find it. For tickets, adults pay $25, 65 and older pay $22, 19 to 24 year olds pay $19, and people younger than 18 pay nothing.
Loved the cafe 😉 And all of the exhibiting art was great.. Except fifth floor you can go thru this short tunnel but you look down and it looks like there is no floor underneath you, just couldnt do it vertigo got me after Step 1 😳
One of my favorite museums in San Francisco. Recently re-opened since the onset of Covid19. Make sure to plan which installations/galleries you want to see as some of them limits capacity at a time. Check in and have your QR code handy.Parking on site, they give certain percentage of discount if arriving by car. Ride shares conveniently drop you off at the entrance. Few minutes walk away from a Bart station too.Restaurant/s and cafe/s currently closed, but should soon accept patrons too. They have a couple of free days/family days a year so you can get free entry. Otherwise, membership is so worth it as well!
I had a great experience here on their free day. Super trippy art, man i wish i had more time i will definitely be coming back to see everything i missed
I have traveled the world and mind you Ive seen a lot of art. The art in this museum could have been better. The mood of the museum was not great - could have been painted with brighter colors like fluorescent or pink. The exhibits itself probably required a lot of lighting since the subject matter was very industrial and gaudy. As an art connoisseur in the art business, I think they should have bought better art or commissioned art from other overpriced artists. Please reconsider your art.
Georg Baselitz, my favorite, and others are on display. 6 floors with displays of modern art.
Going to the Momo is always fun. They typically have one major exhibition going on and then some other fun stuff to look at as well. The cafe is a good place to stop and grab a coffee and take a rest. My favorite is the outdoor living wall, but for some reason probably due to covid, they have removed all the seating which is a big bummer. They were not checking vaccination cards at the door which was great, but they still require masks for everyone except for the mayor of San Francisco, which is less great. We very much enjoyed the current exhibit with the colored glass tunnel, it was really cool. Parking tip, park in the moscone center garage a block away, its safe and relatively inexpensive.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a modern and contemporary art museum located in San Francisco, California. A nonprofit organization, SFMOMA holds an internationally recognized collection of modern and contemporary art, and was the first museum on the West Coast devoted solely to 20th-century art. The museums current collection includes over 33,000 works of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, and media arts, and moving into the 21st century. The collection is displayed in 170,000 square feet of exhibition space, making the museum one of the largest in the United States overall, and one of the largest in the world for modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1935 in the War Memorial Building, the museum opened in its Mario Botta designed home in the SoMa district in 1995. SFMOMA reopened on May 14, 2016, following a major three-year-long expansion project by Snøhetta architects. The expansion more than doubles the museums gallery spaces and provides almost six times as much public space as the previous building, allowing SFMOMA to showcase an expanded collection along with the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection of contemporary art. This is a great place to visit, especially for families!
A great place to take the family or go on a date. So many pieces of art to look at and enjoy. The museum is so impressive on how large it is with 7 floors. The best part was having outdoor spaces in the museum to get fresh air and away from the crowds.
SFMoma always has interesting exhibits, but the building itself is also a masterpiece. The Living Wall as backdrop for sculptures is gorgeous, and the use of interior colors always surprising!
Spend 3 hours there and not get bored. Only $25. Download the app and bring headphones so you can listen to the detailed review on artwork with labeled with a number. Makes the experience even better. Go!!
Is my favorite museum !i love to visit often and i will like to have my art there !
What a fabulous place to spend a morning and afternoon! So much wonderful art to view! We wandered through 4 huge floors full of stunning pieces of art. The only exhibit we were disappointed in was on the top floor. The Joan Mitchell exhibit was less than what we thought it would be. Mostly blank canvases, or a canvas painted one solid color just isnt exciting or innovative to us. And I am an abstract artist myself!! The cafe served a very nice lunch, also.
Must visit in San Francisco. Trying to understand more the works of “Father of video art”.
You absolutely CAN NOT pass up the chance to visit this museum at least once in your life. My husband and have been here several times and it’s a wonderful experience every single time. They are constantly adding new art to see so you never get old of this place, expect to spend anywhere from 2-4 hours here and you will have to find a parking garage to park in.
Not a fan of the curation. Ive been to other modern art museums and have appreciated them, so its not like I utterly despise modern art but some of them screamed lack of inspiration. Some good pieces here and there but overall not a fan. Attached to this review are the pieces that I believed stood out the most to me.
Amazing museum! Spent 4 wonderful hours exploring inside!
I’m really getting into immersive and digital art and like seeing more of these exhibits at the #sfmoma. It’s free to go on the first Thursdays of the month 4-8pm and starts getting crowded after 6pm so go early. My favorites are the Oculus Bridge which now has kaleidoscopic panels installed. It’s so popular they have a waitlist you need to sign up for via QR code at the entrance of the exhibit. It took just 30 minutes for a text alert and 10 minutes on line. You get 45 seconds to walk through the tunnel and take all the shots you want for the gram. For a little bit of zen visit the massive living wall in the 3rd floor. Installed in 2016 it’s 150 wide x 29 high and has over 30 plant species.Digital art is not new - their current exhibition Nam Jun Paik features TVs in a field of real plants, a TV cello, and more from the 1970s.For fellow mural lovers, check out Our Ancestor’s Wildest Dreams by the @twinwallsmuralcompany which manifests healing and resiliency in the face of trauma, injustice, and oppression. And Pan American Unity by Diego Rivera which can be viewed any time without a ticket.#artmuseum #modernart #digitalart #sanfranciscolife #citylife#museums
A variety of modern art works in and exceptional building. They are currently showcasing the Diego Rivera mural known as Pan-American Unity which is a massive piece of art of unique beauty. In the upper floors of the gallery works of Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein and Georg Baselitz, among others, are showcased.
I agree with the other reviews. Its really hot inside and poor ventilation. There was no social distancing. If you are bringing a backpack prepared to carry it on the front side of your body. The outside area was closed. In regards to the modern art it was nice and beautiful. The gallery workers were nice and friendly as well.
Wanting to venture out of the house? I recommend SFMomma right now. Not only do they have a fantastic survey of Nam Jun Paik’s work but also they are conserving a huge, amazing Diego Rivera mural on loan from San Francisco city College. The conservationists are working on the mural publicly!
Really loves it here. It was $50 for my wife and I to check it out on a Monday afternoon but it’s worth it. We spent about 2 hours there starting from the top floor down but I figure 3 hours would be more appropriate.
Amazing experience! 7 floors. Almost overwhelming. As a lover of Architecture, at times I was looking more at the iconic buildings by Mario Botta (1995) and Snøhetta (2017), the building behind it. Art was clearly arranged by theme, but there was no floor map available. Galleries are split in two basic halves (old and new building) around a central courtyard....but again there was no explanation of this, so I Almost missed 1/3 of the permanent collection.During the Pandemic, food service has been halted but the Cafe Pavillion next to outdoor sculpture terrace is very much work a look. Have Fun! Its Great Art. Great Architecture!
Amazing! Great place to go while social distancing.
SF MOMA Always excellent. Dessert is to take in huge Diego Rivera pic. Oh, Free to see! Be certain to see it.
I adore this place. Great exhibits, friendly staff, and excellent gift shop. Bring back the coffee downstairs!
Beautiful museum well worth spending a day.
Beautiful museum, glad they’re all keeping to health guidelines! The exhibits are very fascinating. The gift shop is also great too, many of the books in there are very thought- provoking.
This museum was so much fun to visit! I was able to see so many different artists from Matisse to Krasner. Some of the exhibitions required reserved time slots, but it was very easy to do online. The employees were super helpful. The space was designed with lots of people in mind, there was lots of space to move around and spend time with each art piece. Im so glad that I got to go and visit this museum! I would totally recommend coming and seeing all the art. An adult ticket cost $25. You receive four hours of free Wi-Fi when you enter the museum. Theres more information on their website,
ㆍSF MoMAㆍvisionary artist Nam Jun paik exhibitionㆍOver 200 works of 50 years of art and technologyㆍThe most visible opening after the 2019 exhibition at Tate Modern LondonㆍThe most impressive thing seems to be the CRT TV garden. A TV monitor garden with all his thoughts..ㆍExhibitions regularly held by Nam June Paik Foundation, such as London, San Francisco, New York, etc., inspire a lot of digital juniors and POP art generation. Especially, San Francisco seems to be more popular because it is a techie environment.ㆍAs an opportunity, I went to the membership open time on Saturday morning quietly observed.
This Mario Botta designed museum has the Fisher Art Collection and more. Spacious, airy and light are key to this space. The outdoor patios with a living wall of greenery or metal sculpture are wonderful to behold.Set across from the Yerba Buena Gardens, stroll through decades of contemporary/modern art.Your artistic soul will thank you!The gift shop is fantastic for art lovers. They have a huge book section, apparel, jewelry and accessories from local artists and global sources. The atrium is a wonderful space for events. There is even a screening room where I’ve viewed films from SF Film non-profit.A delight!
Just the architecture alone and the spaces inside are a pleasure to see. And the art and temporary exhibits are always interesting and enriching. I liked the Joan Mitchell paintings. And the terrace with live jazz was a treat.
Great experience. We went on a Thursday afternoon and it was really empty. The staff was really friendly and exceptional. So worth going now as a local to enjoy easier entry and to avoid the tourist crowds. Dont get me wrong, I miss the tourist but it was a wonderful experience to have the museum to yourself.
When you have a museum bucket list and on a 48h business trip you make time before your flight to go. I wish I could have stayed for hours instead of just 2. It was everything modern art dreams are made of, there’s so much to constantly see. A MUST!! It doesn’t disappoint!
There were a lot of great pieces here and it was very organized. Many different varieties of art.
Great museum open again with safe covid protocols. The Contemorary Optics exhibit in vibrant color was a highlight of our visit in April 2021. Go while its still there
Huge, world-class destination for modern art and photography. The 2016 Snøhetta addition is in itself beautiful, and the original Mario Botta building was a triumph, but somehow the amalgamation of the two feels too large, difficult to navigate, and less coherent in its display of the permanent collection - almost as if the SFMoMA has become of vehicle for the aggrandizement of its donors. Still, the pop-art, abstract expressionist, and German holdings are particularly incredible. Don’t miss the sculpture roof garden, the Agnes Martin room, or the living wall.
We went for the First Thursdays free admissions day. It was so crowded but the exhibitions are amazing. If you are interested in modern art, this is a must. They also had an event space where people can participate in making their own spin art and take a picture at the photo booth. However, we could not see the new exhibitions on the fifth floor because it was members only.
An amazing museum. Simply a blast. The museum can be fully explored in a day, but for the full experience, I recommend spreading over two days.
This was a gargantuan museum. Very beautiful and interesting
Spent a little over 2 hours here and got to walk through probably about 90% of the exhibits. Would need to spend much longer if you’re really taking it all in, but I thought it was the perfect amount of time and leaves you wanting a little more to come back again. Enjoyed the wide variety of art and the museum building itself is beautiful.
So, I just learned today that a person requires more talent to be famous on TikTok than he/she does to have their art displayed in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.#wasteofmoney#Icouldhavedonethat#givemesomecrayons#thatscribbleisnotartOkay, Im done venting.
Cool museum with a lot to see. Great exhibits, especially Warhol!
Fantastic space, exhibits and people! Loved the experience. This is a very large museum in the middle of the city and is definitely a must see for anyone who is interested in modern art. They also have some amazing Picasso, Rothko, and other brilliant works! I would plan on being here for 2-3 hours or more.Pro tip: get yourself signed up for some of the exhibits that have a queue to get in right when you get in so you can do a floor or two before you get a message to visit the limited/controlled spaces.
This is a massive modern art museum. I was truly not prepared for the size and scope of this museum. My only real complaint is I wish there was a map of the galleries available to guests. I am certain we missed some things on the floors we visited first because we didnt fully understand the layout of the building.
A must-visit experience in SF if you’re into modern art! If there are any special exhibits, be sure to get in line for the time-entry free tickets before checking out the walk-through exhibits!
This place never disappoint me, always have new exhibition with various style of artists, the cafe is also a nice hidden gem for you to get a bite. Gift store is large and you can find lots of interesting things there. Only downside is parking is generally a nightmare in SF downtown, so be prepared.
Just amazing. As always.
Its the worst museum I have ever been to. The facility was not well ventilated and very warm. The two employees checking tickets were strange and chatty with each other, and lacked any form of professionalism. There was only a handful of good art pieces that were worthy of any attention. The optics display was one of them but you are given only forty seconds to view it and perhaps take one good photo if youre lucky. This place is overpriced and overrated.. Save your time and money by staying away from it.
If you like modern art
Anazing ever changing modern art. The new immersive exhibit was awesome!!
Exposition is equal to zero value . 15 years ago it was better
The museum is really well designed. Nice rooftop.
The museum itself is beautiful, clean, sanitizing stations galore, the art just didnt resonate with me. Some beautiful pieces like Diego Riveras gigantic mural of Pan American Unity, some interesting metal works, but I suppose I appreciated the photography the most. I would certainly go back if friends wanted to go.
A very intuitive experience for paintings which were across from different regions. This is my first time visit to kind of these places, definitely a very big space for so many paintings. They have wide variety of wall paintings but the most I liked are some real creative hangings, entrance and exit of each floor, it has 7 floors, open place in the restaurant which has LOVE and a cent figures. They are the best with kids even. They will enjoy too.Bottom line, if you kind of in love with paintings, it is a must visit.
So many things to see, couldnt have done it all in one day
Very nice make appointment very close to union Square.
Very beautiful museum with so many amazing pieces of art 🎨
Friendly staff and fantastic collections as always!
Well never know. With an entry price of $25 per person (adult) who are on a limited budget it just wasnt met to be. Asking nearly 2 hours of pay to appreciate art means its not going to happen.
Wow! Incredible!!! There are so many exhibits here. Only problem was I didnt have enough time to see them all. I will definitely be returning soon.
I tried the sister museum in NY and I liked this one more . Put it in your list for SF if you dont have it already
Good display of modern art. It was fun to walk around and see people take this place seriously. My favorite was the huge black painting - yup..black.
Amazing staff and visitor’s handling during Covid19. Also, free parking and free visits during until October 18th, 2020 I think. Definitely worth visiting....Pictures are worth a thousand words, enjoy 😊
This museum is a must if you are in SF.
Aesthetic architecture💕
A beautiful museum with an amazing and ever changing collection. Highly recommended for everyone to visit at least once. Mondays are nice and light on the visitor count. I hear Fridays and Saturdays are a lot busier.
Great art, interesting people to look at, good food in the cafeteria. What else can I guy ask? A great way to spend half a day or so.
Loved the experience. All the beautiful art work. Definitely on the Modern spectrum. The living green wall was pretty cool.
Beautiful galleries and solid permanent collection. The special exhibits are always well designed. Can get crowded but the expanded square footage prevents you from feeling it. Great avenues for natural light and outdoor viewing spots.
Great permanent collection, and always interesting exhibitions.
One of our favorite spots on this trip! Such amazing displays and exhibits. Just for warning backpacks are allowed but you have to wear it in the front per their policy and suggest just checking it in the front entrance. Besides that it was inspiring to see everything!
We were visiting from Seattle and was looking for some downtown things to do. We heard good things about the San Francisco Museum so we decided to visit. This is a very nice well organized museum. The 7th floor was closed for renovations, but everything else was open. All COVID Safe Guidance was followed. I enjoyed the collections of various types. I would visit here again.
Great exhibits and a lot to see. I enjoyed the photography floor. Some were a lot more abstract for my liking. There was a lot of empty space. Wish they had more for laymen like myself.
The Joni Mitchell exhibit is amazing, amongst many many other awesome things to experience and see. A fantastic place.
We had some time to kill in SF and someone recommended we come to the MoMA. It was a fascinating romp through all the exhibits! I especially loved the Nam June Paik exhibit; I felt inspired going through all of their work. Absolutely recommend it!
Consistently interesting, variety of exhibits. I particularly enjoyed Diana Markosians, Santa Barbara. The incongruity and dissonance between the dreams and reality of the immigrant experience and the strength and courage of a woman, was powerful and timely. The building is handsome and easy to navigate:accessible by Bart, Caltrain with a short walk from each.
Fun place to be if you like art and it’s a good 4hr maybe more if you really take your time. Has a lot of exhibits to explore!
5 floors of exhibits from a wide variety of artists. I went to see a group of special needs artists and performers from NIAD in Richmond, CA. I was very impressed with how tender the staff were towards these guests. And I saw some wonderful art works.
MOMA museum did not disappoint. It had been years since we visited and the level of art and variety was wonderful. You start by checking your bags in for free. Once you buy your tickets, it’s very easy to make your way through each exhibit and each floor.Everything is clearly marked, there are friendly staff everywhere ready to help and just an overall great experience. They have a cafe on site which is nice to do as a break between exploring all the museum has to see. They have a wonderful shop where you can buy anything from bookmarks to jewelry. This is a must while you are in San Francisco.
It was alright. I genuinely hoped for a better experience. When you go you need to reserve your spot in certain exhibitions. Therefore, there is a lot of going up and down the floors since youll be visiting floor 5 and all of a sudden you have to go back to floor 7. So, just make sure to visit the museum from the last floor going down. At lest you wont have any surprises.
For a modern art museum, the exhibits are good. Several of the staff members, however, should have a bit more training on customer service. Many were not overly friendly and several were actually rude, snapping at my 11 year old daughter. The virtual waiting for the special exhibits worked well, but be advised that the staff doesnt want you sitting on benches to wait. They will shoo you along.
Great experience loved it
