Pleasantly surprised by this place!I typically don’t enjoy contemporary art but their exhibits had a good balance of paintings and sculptural pieces. Not a huge establishment but you can easily spend an hour in thereFriendly staff and curator who proactively share with patronsVery accessible by public transit if you don’t want to park dt.
Good mix of contemporary artists and media. Fun video installations at present: one set in a TRON-style room and another two lifesize brides reflecting on life.
Love the San Jose museum of Art. The exhibits are regularly updated, they contemporary, and have a local connection frequently. Its a high quality museum right in San Jose.
I want to give this place more stars because I really support art, especially in my city. But our experience was just okay. The museum is very small, but very beautiful on the inside. The architecture is lovely and the flow is nice. Unfortunately, when we went, several of the display rooms were closed for new installations. Which made it even smaller. :( Upstairs, there was a really bizarre exhibit of modern art. It was cool to see something different, and it was very well presented, but it was a bit dark and twisted for my liking. I would love to come back when theres an artist that I like displaying their work.
During my visit the muesuem was preparing for new installations but what was available was very beautiful. It was a short trip but enjoyable.
This is a small museum space with some nice unique installations with a distinct bay area ethos. Some areas were closed when I visited yesterday, but thats ok since theres still lots to look at. We also ate at the cafe which was good with friendly staff and gives you energy to take in the works. Museum store also was nice to browse through.
The place is not that big but it is good place to visit with children. The price in souvenirs shop is reasonable.
Great modern curation for a 1-3 hour visit. Cant beat it with free entry for students, youth and seniors. We ended up paying only $10 for myself (one adult) and really enjoyed it, and taking photos with the art was as much fun as taking it in itself.
Unique exhibits well presented beautiful building I would go back year after year to see the new presentations
Contemporary community centered art museum. A real jewel for the South Bay.
Not a frequent museum patron, but for 10$ the place is a nice way to infuse some culture into the day, and especially after a shelter-in-place.Right now, there are not many pieces from before 2010, and many, many works are from local artists. Tempering expectations is the best course of action for the next few months.Hopefully, the museum can raise more money to collect some more interesting pieces in the future.
Really excellent small museum. Last time I was here 10 years ago it felt like it was trying to be a SFMOMA or a shrine to Chihuly. Its really come into its own with a focus on diverse artists mainly working in California. Hito Steyerls video installation is affecting and thought provoking. The exhibition of California hard edged pieces is really great as an exploration of different approaches to a theme, and does so with the works of mostly women artists.
I loved it. I really enjoyed my resent visit to the art museum. Dont know when was my last visit to any museum. The tour guide was awesome. It was all free. She was informative and interactive. Stuff available there is also amazing. Good for kids n adults to get inspired. My son (7) was super happy there.
An eclectic collection of modern art. The exhibits we saw were all tied together by an overarching theme. It is small, although one hall was closed. By chance we saw live performance art, that was a nice surprise. They have a reasonable entry fee and the all staff are knowledgable about the art. They also offer free guided tours.
Very limited collection only one floor open at this time, still extremely nice. Only issue was the limited use of the AC, covid has everyone wearing masks. So itd be nice if theyd turn the AC down a bit!
Went on a field trip with my sons 4th/5th grade class. The tours they have the children provided lots of opportunity for discussion with open-ended questions about the various works of art. We were only there for about 2 hours so didnt get a chance to see everything since part of our time was also spent creating our own art. Lots of wonderful exhibits which displayed a variety of mixed media from photography to water color to textiles to glass to use of protected videos on the wall... lots of 3 dimensionality. Very relaxing and inspiring environment. Super friendly and helpful staff. It was my first visit and I would highly recommend it to others.
Very nice full of culture and history was well worth the money spent. I enjoyed my time there.
Small museum, but nice space.
Museum is now open F, Sat, Sun. Call to verify due to COVID closures. New show is on incarceration. Very thought provoking. Permanent installation is on the second floor with an eclectic collection. We also shopped in the gift store. Always excellent finds for Christmas, birthdays), and other gifts. And we bought sandwiches to go from the Cafe. You can enter the Cafe and gift shop without paying a fee for the art exhibit.
I like this place here is a so beautiful gallery.
Not many things here. Maybe spending an hour.
Its in interesting art museum to visit. Museum it self is not very big. You can easily cover all exhibits within an hour. Located in downtown San Jose, so you need find parking in one of those paid parking lots or if you are lucky you will find street parking. There are quite a few interesting exhibits.
Thanks to the support of Facebook, it is free to visit 🚶🏻 the museum on each month’s first fridays from 5🕔 PM to 10 🕙 PM. Exhibitions 🎨 change regularly, so, you should check their web site 🔗 regarding the newest ones.My Review Scale:⭐️:☹️ (Bad)⭐️⭐️: 😕 (So so)⭐️⭐️⭐️: 🙂 (It is worth trying out)⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: 😊 (Good)⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: 😍 (Wonderful)
The architecture of the building makes it ar⁵⁵⁵⁶wc at alone
Lots of space and staff. Little content. It takes some effort to create your own experience and it would be difficult to explain to friends why they should allocate an hour of their day. They rotate 3 or 4 curated areas every 6 months or so. Perhaps a future rotation will provide a reason to return.
There is always something interesting to examine. I wish there are more parking downtown.
Has some good art.... A tad too liberal in my opinion

The art collection inside was not worthy of 10$. The only thing that was good to look at was karma green statue located right beside lobby which portrayed tower of men standing on one of another closing others eyes. Also sjma store has interesting stuff than the actual museum. We went here with my son, they guided us to go down stairs to find interesting stuff for children but there was nothing but a couple of books, magnifying lens, colored plastics. It was just boring. I went with the expectation of seeing wonderful painting or amazing art work but it didnt meet my expectations.
This is smaller museum but I enjoyed it. I am an educator was I was able to get in free. It would have been $10 which I think is a reasonable asking price. Beautiful pieces and some were interactive.
Definitely time your visit to include a guided tour as youll get so much more from your visit that way. I didnt know of the link with San Jose University and Tommie Smith of the 1968 incident until my visit. Tickets are $ inexpensive. This is a wheelchair friendly place. Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours I reckon to take it all in.
This museum will delight you! There are numerous excellent exhibits throughout the year with lots of space in which to roam. The docents are helpful or one can go it alone and use written guides for information. The Cafe is in the original museum which Ive been told was a post office before that! The food has been consistently fair.I love the museum gift shop which has a variety of artistic items to purchase and an interesting variety of choices within each category. The location is excellent with many kinds of restaurants nearby. The Lite Rail, Theatres, Movies, Bars. etc., are all within walking distance of the museum. Invest a day visiting this San Jose Treasure. Better yet, become a member! No fee if you are a member and certain memberships (not expensive) allow a member to bring a guest for free.
The museum is interesting. There are many new things that can inspire your mind. Each artwork is unique and greatly designed. Very impressed suggest people to go there.
Interesting, little small as art places go, usually has some really good temporary display. Not a kids place, although they try.But not much room for too much. I get bored here quickly, so can imagine kids would. Would say check current exhibit and if it really sounds great go, if not dont.
This Museum reflects the true spirit of San Jose states Art culture while demonstrating the core Art spirit of the city area. The Museum building carries a state of the art infrastructure and its outer view is super scenic.During my visit to South Market street, I visited this place in the evening time and the walk was worth the time as it truly stood out the expectations.
Nice place, good parking spot. Although if too many people will go there all at once, parking would be quite difficult. But the overall experience is fully satisfying. Thanks!
Service was perfect on every level. I am planning another trip here soon just to stay at this hotel. Very highly recommended and thank you very much!
Sunday 10 am -7 pm by appointment
Way more lively than I expected. I was expecting a quiet (bit boring) museum with art that makes me wonder why it is art. The museum was very alive, lots of families with kids and activities for kids (it was a special event, so not sure if this is the case every weekend). Next to the art there was an exposition with a strong local focus.
I visited Make Me a Summary of the World exhibition in this museum which absolutely impressed me. Installations and sculptures were so unique and vivid. Its a nice place to spent time at with family
The pizza was fine, the service was nice. It was a Sunday and there was a lounge singer. I dont want to say anything not nice so let me just say, it was a satisfactory place.
Wonderful museum with a focus on modern art. You can get through the whole place in an afternoon and is perfect for dates or family activities. The staff is always very helpful and insightful. There should be some research done before going. There are times when parts of the museum are closed off because a show is being cleared out or moved in. Also, there are some shows that might not be child friendly.
Worth a visit .. quite small place though!
This place is an amazing place for anyone who lives science and technology. While geared mostly towards children, adults can also enjoy it as well. I brought my son because I knew hed love it. Hes 24. After our trip, he thanked me for letting him feel like a kid again.
Wonderful installations, very helpful docents.
Derivative its bulls*** its bullsh***
A small but inserting modern and contemporary art museum. Their exhibitions will change during the year. They offer free tour and every 3rd Thursday after 5pm, it’s only $5 to get in.
Super cool place!! I feel like Im at state of euphoria when Im at San José Museum of Art. This has to be an Artists heaven or something of the likes. Lots of new stuff, lots of things to get... groove music ;) definitely going to pay em a visit like a dozen times before the years end. Forget the real world, Im an Artist!!!
We had a lovely day here. We managed to hit in between exhibits so a part of the museum was closed to us. But they gave a voucher to come back and see the new exhibit for free. So a really good value. Its in a good area to make a day of it. The Tech Museum is nearby as are some really good places to eat. Well be going back soon.
Its a small museum, so the price is just right ($10 per adult), and it features local artists. The theme is mostly modern/contemporary. Theres a cafe too. Nice way to spend 45-60min in downtown San Jose. Staff is very nice and friendly. Childrens group seemed to be having a good time during their tour.
It was nice to kill time when we had nothing else to do but I only went because it is free for college students. I don’t think the museum has had any exhibits that I would pay money to see. It is also a very very small museum. You can easily see it all in about 30 minutes.
Nice place! Friendly for kids!
Nice place
This is a very interesting museum with modern art. It is rather small so you can take your time to enjoy the art works. I will say you need to enjoy modern art as this is not your usual museum with paintings and sculptures. We took the light rail so we did not have to park and it worked out very well.
