Ive purchased 2 rugs from Ercan, The Rugman of Santa Fe. His knowledge of rugs is extensive as is his quality collection. He was very patient as I needed to bring home one rug twice to test ride and make sure it was right. I would not hesitate for a moment to do further business with Ercan. In fact, I am discussing with him now the possibility of repairing an antique Persian rug.

The owner took great care to make time for me to schedule an appointment to look at rug options for my living room. Suzani shop is a bit of a disaster. Rude woman practically tried to talk us out of coming in, said a ton of factually incorrect things about Suzani, Ikat and central Asian textiles in general. Then proceeded to follow us around the store. What a horrible trap of a shop. I didn’t even bother going to the main shop despite her trying to convince me to go there because the “selection is better”.

The Rugman of Santa Fe is an amazing experience in rugs. The shop keeper quickly determined my tastes and preferences and helped guide me through his wide selection of carpets and kilims. His staff also are skilled at cleaning, sizing, and restoring rugs in most any condition. And, you can learn the story behind each rug in the shop.

Ercan and his crew were such a pleasure to work with. I purchased my first rug in the Spring of last year and went back to purchase a second rug a few months later. They made the whole process so incredibly easy for me. I’ve also used their rug cleaning service and I simply wouldn’t go anywhere else.

We were looking for a Navajo rug of a specific size and Ercan had one that fit the bill, had a beautiful design and was better priced than ones we had seen on the plaza. A friend of my dads gave him several Navajo rugs which he then passed on to me. They were in really bad shape - dirty, stained with dog urine and had thin spots, holes, and areas where the edges were unraveling. Ercan and his team carefully cleaned the rugs and then, through some secret alchemical process, were amazingly able to get out the urine stains which had hardened and seemed to have permanently destroyed the wool. They also were able to correct where the dyes had bled on some of the rugs. The cleaned rugs are now absolutely stunning. The next step is getting the rugs repaired and Ercan helped me choose one of the more valuable rugs to start that process. I just received that rug back this week and the transformation is incredible. His team rewove areas and strengthened thin areas in such a way that the repairs are perfectly blended. The rug is completely restored to its former glory! I cant say enough about the workmanship, professionalism, and integrity of Ercan and his team.-- annie

What a delightful experience working with professional rug experts! Our new house was empty, and with its concrete floors, it needed rugs. From the time my husband and I casually walked into The Rugman of Santa Fe’s Lincoln Street store to a separate casual visit days later at the Old Santa Fe Trail location, we found our rugs. And, in a modern way: I took pictures of the rugs we liked at both locations, and then sent the pictures to Burcu Tuzen, who arranged to have them all at Lincoln Street so we could see them together. After selecting our favorites, late that same afternoon, Burcu and the owner, Ercan Nalkiran, brought the rugs to our house (now with furniture) for our final approval. Gracious and knowledgeable people. And, both stores have an excellent selection of rugs.

Ercan Nalkiran (aka the rugman of Santa Fe) infuses his lovely Turkish hospitality into his exceptionally professional yet low-key business practices. I was delighted with the outcome of having four rugs recently cleaned. Two are pricey Kashmiri wools, one a hand-woven Portuguese Arraiolos, and the forth an inexpensive dhurrie. Ercan gave equal care to cleaning them all perfectly, and took the extra step to make a repair to the Arraiolos without being asked - or charging extra to do so! His family assistants are so helpful and capable. The entire experience is a moment from less hassled times past, when quality workmanship, a pleasant interaction, and a fair price were more the norm.
